@@enzos711 I've always like Thailand over the PI. It's just more modern in Bangkok. But, it's getting expensive. Even compared to Pattaya. Beer in Pattaya is 60b in Bangkok it can be 120b. That one bedroom can be $300 10 train stops from Asoke. Near Asoke it's closer to $600. The air can be an issue. This year the burning season was bad. But then again, my power never went off once in 14 months. So it's all give and take. Hua Hin is another place to check out. It's got the beach, but it's not as crazy as Pattaya. About the same travel time to Bangkok. Maybe a little longer. Ok, I'm hitting the rack. I've been editing for the last 8 hours. I need some sleep.
my uncle told me stories about this place from his navy days. crazy to think it used to be a bustling navy base and now it's so quiet it's almost eerie. i can imagine when the navy left a lot of ppl had to move as so much business dried up. mustve been tough economically. i wonder how the locals felt about it..obviously the government wanted the u.s. out which i can understand but i would imagine some of the locals that benefited economically were distraught at the departure. i live in a beach town that depends on tourist dollars to survive. its a love/hate thing. i would love to have less traffic and people in the summer months but if we didnt have them i wouldnt be able live here and run my business. probably a lot of that sentiment amongst the locals that were around when the base was active.
I hear ya. I'd guess many locals didn't like all the girly bars. Still, if you don't like looking at the Vegas strip, don't live in Las Vegas. You're correct when the base is closed untold millions left the area. I remember thousands working at the shipyard and base facilities. Today, a fraction is happening. Back in the day, the PI government wanted a huge rent increase. Then the volcano blew. With Guam and Japan in the region, the US pulled out. Today, with trouble brewing in the area, the US is being invited back. 5 new bases?
Big Pic was, USSR Collapse.. Was our largest Overseas Base.. Cost a fortune .. Then Pinatubo Volcano.. Easy politics, esp when asked to leave, But If the USSR hadn't collapsed, we Would Not Have left, regardless.. Just like "the China threat" has us starting back up there ..

All Americans should come back to the Philippines to see for themselves that they can visit the Philippines anytime they like. As most Filipinos in America also would like to visit the Old South because it has similarities to our culture, heritage and religion. Always feel free to visit the Philippines when you have your long vacation in the States. Some American Peace Corps volunteers who served here always come back and visit our country because they want to see their experience and old friends...nostalgia. Stationed on the USS Sterett(CG-31) - Station Dito....was there about 5 months before the ship changed home port to San Diego in 1991. Not a long time, but had some of the best memories during those months. Thanks for the walk through!

Very cool walk down memory lane. I graduated from George Dewey and lived up at San Miguel. Sure has changed and unless me wrong I don't recall that many trees. I remember when the Nimitz would pull in it could not come to dock because it was too big. Remember well walking around checking out the subs, destroyers and all that. And not forget the Admirals berth.
Navy airdale from the 70's. I was here for VAQ 136, USS Kitty Hawk CV 63. Later with VA115 aboard USS Midway CV41. Remember when crossing to Magsaysay it was wall to wall bars and nightclubs! A real hedonist paradise. Would pull shore patrol along main drag and having sore feet afterwards. All in all an unforgettable location!
I was stationed on the USS Proteus AS-19, met my ship on May 15, 1989. Stayed till June then went back to Guam. And the same in 1990, and 1991. A full month in May we stayed. Then went back in July of 91, for Operation Fiery Vigil where we went to assist in the cleanup and restoration of Subic bay. Our motto, which was hung on the side of the ship was “Proteus Pros Can Do”. Then we went back to Guam in August. That was the last time the ship visited there, but I got to go one last time in November of ‘91 to work on equipment on a submarine that was visiting there. We were there for two weeks and we repaired the equipment within a day or two and had liberty the rest of the time, but still had to show up for muster to make sure we weren’t needed.
I love Subic Bay as well as Olongapo City. Watching your video took me back to 1997 when I visited for the first time. I've always wanted to return food good. Just not possible, wish I could find a job at the airport.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane shipmate. I was assigned to the USS CORAL SEA CV-43 on my first port visit there in 1982, and many more afterwards. I use to travel with my uncle back and forth to our Provence, a couple of hours away. There will indeed be a strong presence of American forces reinforcing the base, and other bases opening up all over the Philippines. 🇺🇸🇵🇭🇺🇸🇵🇭🇺🇸🇵🇭👍

Thanks for showing the area. I was there twice in 1987 with the seventh fleet battlegroup Echo. I vaguely remember walking over the bridge and going through a gate and hanging a right and being right in town. I can imagine it was Magsaysay. That and Rizal Avenue are the only two streets that I remember. I remember a young boy asking for my Nike tennis shoes and some money. I gave him a pocket full of change, but he said he wanted the paper money. Hope he turned out okay. Great times!! Thanks, PI.
@EagerExpat yeah, I hope so. I wonder what it looked like after Mt. Pinataubo eruption and after the military left. I have a photo of a young lady I met. i believe it was December 1987. She gave me a photo of her and wrote on the backside. It has her name and an address on Rizal Avenue and wished me the best of luck in life. I often wonder how she is doing. I saw that you were walking on Rizal Avenue around the 1400 block. Oh well, thanks again for sharing as I have not seen that street since 87 and it brought back some good memories. There should be a map of the ‘80s base to superimpose over the new construction, I wander where that lithle chapel was, I climbed up to the tower one day I go a PADY diver’s license there at the base pool in one week and the exam was at Grande Island, To me it was better when we were there, and every night was like a new year celebration ❤

when you popped out at the new mall, across the street was a money exchange where my girl Ami worked in 1982. The new mall was some low grade t shirt shops and a lot of beggars. "Give me Paso", there was a road that went right a few feet down. We called it shit river and I will never forget little Mikey sitting on the canoes and diving to the bottom for the peso's. Us Seabees from NMCB3 gold team started at the other end of the Magsaysay rd. at Jolos club for some good old peso shows, the pig sex and some cheap drinks. The names of bars we cycled through are mostly forgotten, but I remember Florida Club, Brown Derby, Mariposa, etc. We knew everyone because we were stationed there "Station Detto" we had some private areas in the clubs only for Seabee's, and we went under the clubs through trap doors behind the serving bar, to enjoy other activities. lol. I ate at the bowling alley you mentioned before going out, dog wasnt my thing. well I can ramble for hours about the place, but, have one last question. Does anyone remember silver city? the Seabee and Seals mobile homes to the left of the main gate as you exit, couple hundred yards away.?
That's cool. My ship pulled in on the 85-86 West Pac. Along with the 87-88 cruise. I remember hundreds of workers coming aboard. Got us back to sea in great shape
We went to the chow hall at cubi point for lunch, man those marine officers hated us. we had a green bus that said happiness is subic city on the front and we laid in the drainage ditch with shirts off waiting for everyone to eat. "Whos in charge here/" lol, we were all E4. Then we got some beer and went to the beach by the run way, often crossing the run way and getting yelled at by security. Stand of the bus top and take pics of the air craft blasting hot exhaust at our heads, great times.
I was never in the Military but it is sad to see Clark & Subic gone. I was 32 when the bases closed and thought of all broken relationships when the sailors & Airmen pulled out for good.
I lived in San Diego most of my life. It must be 20% Filipino folks. Many folks from that area left the PI when the bases closed. I also have many friends that have moved back to the PI in retirement. Maybe a military pension, federal job pension and Social Security. Then back to the island life and live like a king. I agree, there were broken relationships and children left behind. But, if a person wanted to get there family to the US, it was possible. That was up to the individuals.

Talking to a former Navy Chief that still has friends living in Subic tells me when the Navy ships do pull in they anchor out to take care of business and the crew doesn't get liberty. If they come ashore for any reason they aren't allowed to leave the base or mingle with local females.
Hopefully, that will all change when they open the new bases. Liberty is part of being a sailor. In my opinion, if you travel 30 plus days across an ocean, that's the least they can do
@@EagerExpat Unfortunately the new bases are so remote that there are no towns are in close proximity. The new woke Navy doesn't want Sailors and Marines mingling with the local ladies so it will end up being like Diego Garcia so the only entertainment will be drinking and fighting each other.
@@DougPoulton I hear ya. The fleet just pulled into Phuket here in my new home. They partied like normal. I think they have a liberty buddy rule. Hopefully liberty won't be an issue in the PI.

I'm not sure where that was. I remember filming an active medical building. The hospital in the 80s was a distance from the old pier location. If I remember correctly.
I asked the taxi driver, he didn't know where the NCO club was, but the old movie theatre was gone. many of the older buildings were gone or being used for another purpose

Do you remember a BMC Hill. I was on the USS Horne CG 30. I think Chief went to Subic around the time I got put in 1988. I knew he went to tug boat duty
I don't think the old base is re-opening. But, some smaller mini bases are moving in. The PI and US military have worked tight for decades. Even when the bases have been closed, special forces have always trained in the islands. At least, that's what I learned on Jocko's podcast. And he was there.
You do sound a bit froggy, Joe. Rest up when you get back to Bangkok. A three-hour plane trip, in Asia, with the climate and densely populated cities, is bound to wreak havoc on the body. Drink a ton of water, eat some fruit, and lay low until the bug has passed. Thanks for another interesting video. It must have been an interesting trip down 'memory lane' for you. I understand that the U.S. and Philippines navies conducted joint "exercises" in the past few days. Is the China-U.S. antagonism reflected in the daily life in Thailand, Indonesia, or the Philippines? Are there signs of it? Take care of that bug!
I was on the USS Midway in 1989 for a few days heading to my ship the USS Horne (CG-30) I don't remember where. Either in the Indian Ocean or near the PI.
The US military has pride in keeping a base tidy and clean. It's not a matter of budget. It's a matter of hard working sailors an marines cleaning and painting. I did my share of the cleaning. As did every veteran.
Do you know there is a WW2 Japanese troop carrier sunk right there in front of the admiral building, it was full of American prisoners and sunk by American aircraft
As a native of Olongapo, we used to take pride in walking around Subic Bay. It felt different being inside the base, where everybody took care of it. In fact, my mom was one of the original volunteers who worked for free to maintain the buildings and other facilities. However, it's just sad to see that, due to the indifferent leadership of outsiders, Subic Bay has become dilapidated and neglected. The supposed leaders seem to lack any understanding of the history and importance of this place to the people of Olongapo. Bring back the Americans! I'd rather eat a burger than have shark fin soup and kimchi!

Yes, it was still wild when I was in 1984-1988. Always a good party after a long passage from San Diego
