I must second what Ody Slim has stated, in that it is my wish, too, that the younger members growing up in this most interesting family come to respect their heritage and to protect this property always for decades to come. Well-put, Ody Slim. What a legacy to behold here.

Thank you for sharring some of your life with us. All those years on that property and she still has it. Just wonderful. I could see your grandma picturing the stuff in the garden. As her head was turned. She was going back in time with you. That was a very moving point in the video. It is very nice that you did this for your kids. I hope the land never gets sold out of your family. With those buildings its more than just a plot of land. Its HOME. Its were your family started. It always will be the starting of your life. You have a nice grandma. She reminds me of my grandma. She passed in 2005. I still miss her lots. I still can imagine her voice in my head. She meant alot to me. Alot. She told me stories about her past. I enjoyed it alot. For a time I would visit her once a week. It was special time. My grandpa died before her in 1995. That was my first death. That was so painful. Both there memories live on in my head. The house they lived in had to be sold. That was sad but I knew that it had to happen. Was flipped and sold up to 3 times now. It seems people don't want to stay in it. It now has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. Thank you so much! Sorry I went on.

Neat! Old abandoned house explorations are rarely done by the people who grew up in them and know the history.

Family history like this is absolutely amazing. I love visiting my family farm in northern Wisconsin. My great aunt still owns the land. It has a big old barn, a nice well-maintained farm house, and around 100 acres. There's a beautiful stream that winds through the acres of pasture. I plan to get my ashes spread there, just like my grandpa had when he passed.

Max Werner I live in northern Wisconsin also. We moved away when I was young but I moved back to my roots to marry my childhood sweetheart. I have been so glad to know my past not just from family but also community!

Of all the abandoned house videos, this one is the best because it's a tour with the owners. Love hearing the context, the history, the uses of the rooms, the old photos and family history. It gives true life to an old building much loved, no longer used but not forgotten.

All who wish this place could be restored and that the hands of time could be reversed seem not to realize that these were simple southern people. They were not the owners of the “moon and magnolia” plantations that have been restored ‘cause the few have the means to do so. And to perpetuate the “Gone With the Wind” myths about the early South. Still...it is so good to see that “the salt of the earth” folks are still with us to show how real people people lived in the ante-Belem” era and the post-war reconstruction era that brought so much poverty for all southerners, black and white. It’s also important to realize that (like today) only the ultra-wealthy with vast tracks of land to cultivate could indulge in the “Peculiar Institution”* that was slavery. (*one of the books we used at Louisiana Tech when studying the history of the South. Peculiar indeed. It isn’t common knowledge that the vast majority of southerners were “dirt farmers” like this fellows ancestors.

I did wonder how 'the fire' started.......it's fantastic the pear trees still fruit..... Is there nothing the family as a whole could do to restore this house to a livable functional state again..... It's such a wonderful set up with loads of love, sweat and many memories....... It would be so nice to see family or friends or a B&B anything really ?! A shame to see it get any further run down beyond repair........ Thanks for sharing this and many thanks to your grandma also :) loved it, loved it !! You mentioned the “Old house smell”. We have an 1880 Victorian also, so I know that old house smell. The smell reminds me of my great Grandmother’s 1800’s cabin on the lake in MN. Anyway, someone ought to bottle that old house smell & sell it. They’d make a mint! Fortunately for us all we have to do is walk through the door of our 1880 Vic & all those fond memories of my grandmas cabin on the lake come back, along with that old house smell. There’s nothing else like it in the world. Thanks for sharing!

What a rare treasure that house remains in your family over 100 years later! It's still in a save-able state. Don't let that precious heirloom fall into ruins! Be better stewards and save it!

I wish the house that I lived in was still in the family. It was built in the 1860's. I loved that old house. We had an outhouse til a tornado blew it down. It's been remodeled in the 70's by my dad. Was sold and remodeled again after 2000. Of course it is totally different now and was sold a second time. It was a farm with 80 acres. The barn where I had my horses is gone and all the sheds as well. My dad gave me an arial picture of it last year. It brings back great memories for me so I guess it's still in my family!

Such a Beautiful old House, With A Rich History, that is Factual. Please don't let this old house just sit Idle & rot away. It still looks Solid, & can be fixed up, to become Livable again.Don't let it just fall down!
