Piranha Bar VS. Small Trees - Day 32

  • I tried digging with the stock loader bucket on the tractor and didn't get great results. It's possible, but starting is the hardest part with the stock bucket. I also wanted something that would "hold on" to the trees better so I could utilize hydraulics to remove the smaller stuff instead of a chainsaw, pole saw, and stump grinder.
My research led me to the Piranha bar. The internet claims it's a "game changer" for a tractor loader bucket, so I bought one. Yup, it's a game-changer for sure. I've used it for around 10 hours now, and I'm really glad I bought it.
Digging is really easy with it. Move it the same way you would use a normal shovel with your foot: push it down, wiggle it front to back, push it down again if needed, rotate the forward end up, and lift it. It's the same motion as a normal shovel. With the bar installed, starting a hole is incredibly easy.
But the main reason I got it was for smaller trees. I've seen several videos of people using it to clear trees, and I thought it would be a good investment for our property. It was a GREAT investment. I've found that the smaller 1" or so saplings are easy to go low and drive forward, spearing or wedging the base of the trunk between two teeth, and just drive forward.
For 2-4" diameter trees, I've found the best method is to start higher and use the bucket to lay the tree flat. This usually pops the roots up in front. Then, back up, level the bucket, spear the roots with the tooth bar, and drive forward. Once you have the bar piercing the roots, the forward movement of the entire tractor is much more effective at uprooting than the bucket's lifting and/or curling motion. For reference, this tractor is the Bad Boy 4035h, which has a loader lifting capacity of 2,200 lbs and a loader breakout force of 3,660 lbs.

Digging is really easy with it if you make it move the same way you would use a normal shovel with your foot. Push it down, wiggle it front to back, push down again if needed, rotate the far end up, and lift. It's the same motion as a normal shovel. With the bar installed, starting a hole is incredibly easy.

I understand why the Daughter Tractor video has comments turned off but I gotta say, that warmed my heart!

Thank you for bringing us along on your journey!! Uprooting a tree is one of the few times that irritating phrase “I could do that to if I had that.” Obviously there are other ways, and I have lost a lot of sweat with a shovel and axe doing it, but your way looks like a lot more fun. 😂

i've found the real game changer to be to do it within a few days of a big rain. they seem to come up with a fraction of the effort. Let it dry just enough so you get traction and then go at it.

Hit those fresh bucket holes with some primer to slow rusting.

Very best and cheapest add on implement you can add to your arsenal of tractor tools and can be used by your daughter's machine is a 10 to 15 ft length of stout rope with a clip hook to snap into the tractors trailer connection on one end and a BIG carabiner tied onto the other end. Your daughter can use it to drag small trees and such. She will be helping and feel proud.

Cool. Makes the work of clearing the land look easy. Kind of crazy to me that we figured out with our brain how to use fire to power machines to do work for us instead of using muscles.

Do the nuts bite down on more threads of the bolt than what the video shows? Looks like a longer bolt is needed. It's amazing how much the right tool for a job can speed things up.

My thoughts exactly. THere should be about 1.5 thread extension past the nut minimum.

Yes. That was camera trickery. When purchasing the bar you have to measure the inside distance of the bucket and use that measurement in the ordering process. My tractor was at the property when I ordered it so I looked up the measurement someone else used. It was a touch too short, but still workable. I had to get one side just barely started then tighten the other side all the way, then tighten down the first side all the way. The nut is fully engaged in the threads on both sides but the video doesn't show it.

Jay buddy, you missed out on a better bar. The piranna bar is inferior to the Everything Attachments Wicked Tooth bar. check them out. The EA tooth bar is made with far better alloy steel and the cutters are heavily serrated

Everything Attachments is going through massive legal troubles at the beginning of this year and reports from lots of customers of no delivery of their orders. Unless Jay found a used one, he made out pretty good with this tooth bar all things considered.

I watched a few shoutout videos comparing them all. The EA bar didn't do as well. I spoke with someone directly who has the EA bar and has regrets, wishing he would have got the Piranha bar. And as Chris said, EA is in limbo right now.

I know you all are working very hard, but, I must say, using that tractor to pull up up those trees looks like a lot of fun 😂.!! You all deserve some fun ever once in a while with all your sweat, and Poison Ivy.

Had 13 other videos to watch and saw that Jay Bates posted one...hmmm, wonder which one got watched first? Yep JB! Will I ever own a tractor or an implement called a Piranha Bar? Nope never-I'm a city dweller... but it's Jay f'ing Bates and you just watch and appreciate. Hopefully there are no snakes hiding up in those trees... I know from personal experience they sometimes hang out up in trees and having one dropped down would be a hellish nightmare I would never recover from... it's called ophidiophobia. Wonder why I'm a city dweller...hmm? 🤣 Jay you freaking rock! But don't listen to Van Halen whilst using a band saw! Stay safe, be well, make memories!
