Absolutely love this movie as a kid and still enjoy it now. I can recognize it as a meh movie but its fun.
From what I remember, Loomis found his roommates bodies in game and came to their room to tell them, they mentioned they stopped playing hours ago.
Also Finn had lied when he said he stopped playing, he died in game and went for drive to blow off steam.

Okay as someone who loves this movie I just had to come here and say: they never state clearly I don’t think that October is Hutches girlfriend- I always got that she and Phin were really good friends of his from childhood, and she’s almost like an older sister/mother figure to Hutch
Edit: the official wiki does state clearly October and Phineas are good friends of Hutches- this was driving me crazy during the review but it’s an honest mistake, just thought you guys should know!

I unironically love this movie. I saw it in theaters when i was around 8 or 9 and I loved Frankie Muniez in it (I was a big Malcolm in the Middle fan). it was genuinely scary and i remember being reallt impressed with the effects. I rewatched it recently and enjoyed it just as much while being able to turn a critical eye to all the stuff i missed as a kid or that didnt hold up, but Frankie's character getting locked out of the van while the game plays itself, yelling "BITCH THAT’S CHEATING" has stuck in my head and I'll just randomly say it out loud sometimes

I wasn't lucky enough to see it in theaters but I grew up watching it and loving it. I always thought it was funny like the later chucky films. While I never watched Malcolm in the middle I always loved Agent Cody Banks and called/still call Munez that whenever I see him in something 🤣

17:30 quick correction. in the movie they were talking about Silent Hill 4 not RE4, and the scene got me mad cause there's no Hyperblaster in that game and the final boss is not a girl. they mixed up the info from the first SH. great podcast

I love the Silent Hill games, and I didn't know that the first game had a hyperblaster. I literally thought "hyperblaster" was just generic BS video game vocabulary that they threw in to sound like they knew what they were talking about lmao

Yeah, that scene still irks me since the hyper blaster and no ammo trick is Silent Hill 1, not 4, and also unless he had a justifier, the only way to get the hyper blaster is to get the UFO ending, which requires you to have beaten the game once before. So even if he was on the right system and game, it wouldn’t make sense for him to have the hyper blaster and still need help beating the final boss.
And it irks me because if they had put some effort in, they could have used SH4 but instead made it about using the candle to cure Eileen so you have more time during the final boss. If you’re gonna pander you gamers are least get it right, lol
Even though "Stay Alive" wasn't a good horror movie, I'm glad James and Chelsea are covering it on the podcast.
The game can unpause itself, that's why they keep dying even after they stop playing, and this is why Jimmi Simpson's character dies even though he paused it. They later see that the game is unpaused when they look at his computer. Although some of this may have been cut from the unrated version.
Edit: Also, the cop dies in both versions, I watched the theatrical cut
yeah. the cop still goes to the game store but when he's strapped to the drivers seat, the cut happens and you see the blood.
I love Dead Meat but they really tuned out on this watch if they didn't catch the game playing without the players anyway

As for the roommate and his gf in the beginning: lumis finds their bodies in the game and when he tells them about it they say that they stopped playing a while ago and were alive, hinting at the game keeps playing no matter what
As someone living in Louisiana, it felt refreshing being able to go to each location in this movie. This movie was an odd one but I think I mainly like because of the lack of movies that take place in my home state. Love the podcast!
I’ve loved this movie for so many years. I never realized how bad it was when i was younger, but as an adult i can see how truly awful it is. I still have a soft spot for it in my heart, and will always think of it fondly no matter what.

Regarding the two "roommates" who were killed, there actually ARE a couple of lines in that sex scene that explain it.
Loomis: "I found you guys in the game...you got it good."
Guy: "We haven't played for hours."
So they DID actually play and die.
Edit: Also, the game that Loomis and his boss talk about wasn't Resident Evil 4, but actually Silent Hill 4. I remember this weird, specific detail because I remember how much it bothered me that they were obviously not describing Silent Hill 4 lol
And I actually couldn't remember how Abigail knew the other characters, so I had to Google it. Apparently, she was close with Loomis, and grew up with the female roommate who was killed in the opening scene. There's dialogue that mentions this in the movie.
As much as I like this movie, I'm starting to realize that it has a problem with handwaving away explanations for things. It quickly mentions things in a forgettable way.

Yeah, there is a lot of the plot explained in this but... it's just all so forgettable that people think that there are more plot holes in this than there actually are.

I noticed that he was surrounded by roses, so I thought to myself "oh, he's gonna be fine then." And then, cut to his computer screen and his character is dead. From that point up until they reveal Swink is actually still alive, I was genuinely irritated by the fact that he died. Because, given the setup with the roses, his death didn't make sense.
Come to find out, of course, he didn't actually die thanks presumably to those roses. But that's where we get into something that irritates me about the movie to this day; his character in the game DID die. The roses saved the real Swink in that moment, but his character STILL died. So based on the previously established rules, he should've gotten killed later, but he never did.
And that's another thing! The movie ALSO established that you could do things in the game, and it would affect the real world, such as materializing the crowbar and unlocking the door. So if this is true, how did Swink's game character die? If the real Swink was surrounded by roses, that should've meant there were roses in the game too, which would've saved his game character's life.
I really like this movie, but there are certain things about it that I have to admit feel like such a mess lol

I'm that guy that owns the original movie poster, has the soundtrack and both versions of the film lol I'm actually doing a breakdown video soon of this movie as a fan of survival horror games. Is it a good movie.NOPE. But it was fun and ambitious idea for a movie, plus the Commentary on the unrated dvd was hilarious!

Hahaha chin up though, I loved it in a legitimate way and know a lot of others did too; it's just different perspective is all. Nobody is really right or wrong in art, a lot of important points were missed in the podcast but the overhandling by Disney made the overall poorness of the movie. I imagine if it was handled like a true horror film from start to end it would have been a really great movie
The Fatal Frame games are sooo good! The best ones to play with friends in a dark room at night. Genuinely scary!

14:05 when he's playing the game, he sees the bodies of his friends' characters before he dies. When he mentions it after catching his friends in bed, his housemate says, "we haven't played for hours", which means they did play, but stopped a long time ago so the game probably took over and killed them on its own.
I think to make sure the characters can't pull the 'just don't play' BS, they had it that the game takes over and connects the characters to their game avatars so what they do in real life is what they're doing in the game. Still plays along with the idea that the players become connected to the game, just that the curse has a stronger effect over time.
49:30 the cop does show up again in the theatrical version, he goes to a game store to ask about Stay Alive, when he's back in his car, he sees the Countess in the rear view mirror and it cuts away to outside his car when he dies (blood splatter on the window).
Yeah I think it's because they only watched the directors cut and not the theatrical release movie that they're confused about lots of scenes. I personally loved watching this and this movie is why I never ever ever play these types of games in real life. They scare the shit out of me lol

Which is why it's ridiculous because the video game was unnecessary. Even more unnecessary when you think about how soon in the movie they stop playing it. It's like they included the gaming aspect as an excuse for shitty CGI characters

Okay, let me explain it to you. If you stop playing the game the spirit takes over and controls your character's actions to make it easier to kill you. That's how Phineas (although he was about to die when he shut off the game (he said so himself) so the spirit didn't really have to control his character but she did take over the game) and October died (and the cop in the PG-13 version). Now whoever is deleting every other review I post stop doing that!
I'm genuinely not trying to be rude but I don't think they care. They clearly don't like the movie. Also, comments just tend to vanish these days. Happens to me all the time, regardless of what I've typed.
I'm guessing the spirit gets impatient if players stop playing. Not only that, but she obviously not stupid and/or guilible to fall for a diversion tatic of one continues the game while the other victims does something else, because Sweets had hope by playing the game he can buy Hutch and Abigail time but the spirit went after Abigail even when Sweets was playing. And it wasn't until Abigail was saved the spirit then tried to kill Sweets as he was playing
I do agree somethings are so mixed up they don't make sense. Like the body of Elizabeth Bathory. If that spirit was suppose to be THE Elizabeth Bathory (the countess was a real person and she was a serial killer (although she predated HH Holmes and Jack the Ripper by several hundred years so she wouldn't have the title in her lifetime). She was on the very first episode of season one of Deadly Women). She was in the very first episode of the first , her body and home should be in Hungary (in her time it was actually Austria-Hungary but the location is in what is now part of Hungary). I never been to Hungary but I don't think any of the scenes takes place in Hungary or anywhere in Europe. Not even the plantation.
And yes, Bathory's victims were young girls many of which started as young girls that were already working for her but when she killed all of them she started 'hiring' girls from towns around her home which led to her capture, yes she drank their blood in belief it restores her beauty, and yes when she was finally caught and convicted she was lock up in the top of her tower for the remainder of her life. Amazing how accurate the backstory of ghost is to the actual Elizabeth Bathory since movie producers often make changes to better fit their movie.
Also if you have a problem with how Bathory undressed herself to bathe in Abigail's blood as she drink it, word of advice: beware of Hostel Part 2. It has a similar scene but with a bathtub with scented candles around it and the victim hanging over the tub, the killer was alive and had a scythe instead of being a ghost with sheers.
K so I know this episode is a year old but I started bingeing the podcasts and this one is absolutely hilarious… especially due toJames’ absolute fury at all the nonsensical plot shit and how incomprehensible it is. James and Chelsea, love your channel, love your content, love your podcast!!! Thank you for all you give us with Dead Meat 🤘🏼❤️
Abigail and October literally had the same deaths/near deaths, Both girls were chained by their ankles and hung upside down from the ceiling as Báthory either slits their throat or eats their blood. The only real difference is October dies but Abigail survives

I have been waiting for YEARS for this movie to get covered (my favorite horror movie) that when I saw the thumb nail I audible gasped out loud!
Fun fact: the magazine advertising Stay Alive at the end of the movie, the front cover was actually covering gears of war.

I love stay alive, it scare me so much when I was a kid and I always rewatch it. This is one of my favorite horror movies I’ve ever seen
I remember this was one of the few horror movies I watched as a kid that got my foot into horror other than The Shining and Jeepers Creepers. While it is a bad horror movie now as an adult, it’s still slightly my guilty pleasure because of the cast and I liked the concept. Loved hearing your thoughts and opinions on the movie, such a funny podcast!

I have been waiting on this episode; from before I watched this movie, I had some knowledge of the Countess, the main antagonist, and so watching this movie, I was like "okay, the movie does know some of the 'history' surrounding Countess Bathory, and the usage of a video game I feel is fun". She's a favourite historical character of mine, so while the movie may be bad, I do enjoy it.

I actually enjoyed Stay Alive. Even with all it's campiness. I thought it was intentionally more of a schlocky parody than genuinely frightening.
A moment of silence for actor Fred Ward who passed away recently. May he rest in peace.
Loomis was a game tester, he brought the game home and shared it with his roomates. They quit playing and he kept going, they had sex in the meantime - he dies/calls hutch and goes to tell them he saw their bodies in game, and walks in on them getting busy. They say they stopped playing hours ago - more than likely dropped controllers afk to fuck. He leaves and goes to the kitchen, sketchy stuff starts happening and he runs upstairs to his roommates to find them all dead - is pushed from the top floor and hung from the chandelier. Funeral is where Hutch gets the game and the rest of the cast comes over to try it out. EDIT: Roommate's only died because they went AFK and got murdered in game while having sex then died same in real life. Later people stop playing but the witch lady had gained too much power from 6-7 of them stating the spell at the beginning of the game and starts fucking them over.
So I doubt this comment will get seen, but the pig mask during the sex scene is actually a reference to the character Piggsy in Manhunt. At least I'm 95% sure that's the case. It was one of the most controversial games at the time and a hit with gamers, so considering the context it feels too specific not to be.

Stay Alive is one of my all-time favorite horror movies lol. I was unbelievably shocked when I found out that a lot of people hate it.
I can see why people hate Stay Alive. I genuinely like it. I like the premise behind it. It's based on a true horror story. But this movie specifically is tailered for a certain demographic. It's not for everyone.

Please cover Darkness Falls! I’m sorry, but I love when you guys cover bad horror movies. I saw the unrated cut when it came out on like HBO or something because it was about video games and it made absolutely no sense. The worst part is that it came out the same year as Silent Hill’s adaptation, which was a video game movie I actually enjoyed. For James and Chelsea, I'm not sure if anyone has answered this yet, but at the beginning the character of Loomis has a throwaway line that you may missed where the roommate and girlfriend did play the game beforehand and he had found their corpses in game. Glad to catch the new episode! Love you two!

This is absolutely one of my favorite terrible horror movies! I love it so much! I've been waiting so long for y'all to cover this! This movie actually really got me into the ACTUAL story of Elizabeth Bathory back in high school~

Milo Ventimiglia’s character mentions that he found his roommates characters in the game so that’s the only thing that really explains that they played but it is in there.

Keep in mind- it was made in 2006. For 2006, it was pretty successful. In the light of 2022, it definitely lacks now but I guess my love for it comes from the nostalgia of screaming in theaters with my friends when I was 16 😂
No, no, no, Hutch is not a lawyer. Professionally he's a file clerk or something like that, but in secretly he's his boss gaming advisor giving advice about video games. Boss basically even said so (behind closed doors in his office) that he hired Hutch for gaming advice as he said 'I hired you for one reason' then goes into the video game Silent Hill 4.
Wow I completely forgot about this movie but I LOVED it when I was younger haha. The final act when they have to work together in-game and in real life was the coolest thing to me

I personally love this movie, but I think it's because I was a gamer and still am, and it's super nostalgic. I would say it's a good movie and it's one that I've rewatched but it's not horrible. It's a good middle ground movie. They also never talked about how the ghosts/countess and the kids from the video game appeared in real life, plus the carriage. So yeah it wasn't surprising that Skim I think his name was, was able to magically unlock the mansion doors and give Hutch the crowbar from the game. How do you think the carriage got there????

So if this is true, how did Swink's game character die? If the real Swink was surrounded by roses, that should've meant there were roses in the game too, which would've saved his game character's life.
I really like this movie, but there are certain things about it that I have to admit feel like such a mess lol

My buddy and I used to love stay alive but as we rewatched it a few years ago we came to the conclusion that it’s not as good as we remembered I think it’s the fact that we were kids and really loved the idea of a gaming horror movie lol just like you said! Also happy birthday man!
I really liked this movie despite it being really silly and in no way related to gaming culture outside of the stereotypes 🤣 Just stupid fun, which I really miss these days.

I watched this movie in the middle of the night when it randomly aired on Fox. My friend and I were texting as we were watching because we were both into video games. I haven't seen it since but it stuck in my head. This just makes me wanna rewatch it with my husband who's never seen it.
