    I use a big, 140 ml syringe with a PVC (peripheral venous catheter) for drawing samples from fermenters. It works a charm and is very hygienic - the pvc comes sterile and can be easily sanitized or cheaply replaced, it is also enough just to crack the lid open a tiny bit to take a sample.

    Must have made wrong readings with my wine but I don’t think so? My red wine OG was 1.020 and FG is 1.040 mind you I didn’t check the temperature of the liquid at either readings! Great video

    Thanks Flora. Took OG (1.065) with refractometer and FG with hydrometer. FG differences between refractometer/ hydrometer were 1.035/1.008 @ 67 Deg. @ Day 25. Any idea for FG differences? Checked water on refractometer and it zeroed out fine....Kegged 1st of 4 5G fermenters after tasting hydrometer sample. Your thoughts????

    So what if you don't take a first reading, what will the last reading tell you? Thanks

    Here i was thinking I could just fill the damn thing and get a measurement. I filled it up with distilled 40% vodka so maybe 60-70%
    Then the darn meter just drops all the way in. Im guessing its bc its cold? So its sitting out right now waiting for room temp.

      If you go to the brewers friend page of refractometer correction it will correct the final FG for you. That’s what I always use

    Great vid. Is there any way to work it out if u didnt get a reading at the start?

    • @FloraBrewing
      @FloraBrewing  4 роки тому +1

      there may be a way but it's hard to tell if itll be accurate or not. If you plug your recipe into a brew father or beersmith application you can get an estimate of what your original gravity would be

    Is a hydrometer good for testing small amounts of alcohol, under 0.5%?

    • @FloraBrewing
      @FloraBrewing  3 роки тому

      It will do it in theory you just have to test pre and post fermentation.
