    I use the 12-200 with an Em5 Mark II for my hikes and let me tell you something, there is nothing like this on the market! Lightweight, not nauseatingly expensive, weather sealed, and SHARP. For under a $1000, I built myself a rock solid hiking setup and it has not let me down whatsoever. I don’t have to worry about weather or weight, it stays hooked on my Peak Design mount on my backpack and I barely feel it’s there but I bring home shots that make me feel like I’m still on the trail among the beautiful flora and fauna. This is why I chose Olympus and I could not be more happy with my choice.

    I'll say this about Robin: while some complain he seems too positive on a lot of his reviews (I disagree, he's plenty honest, just always cheerful), I'll say this: at least he applies the best of his skill as a photographer, regardless of which piece of kit he's working with. Far too many people have taken this 12-200 lens and taken crap pictures at high noon... are they even trying??? Not Robin. He can make just about any piece of kit look good... more importantly, he shows us what's possible with these lenses.

      i feel any cheap but workable lenses that aren't Pro have a strength somewhere in focal length and aperture settings that becomes indistinguishable.

    Hi Robin I have the 12-200 as well as several Olympus Lenses including the 12-100 and 40-150 Pro. However, I wanted a very versatile walk about lens that when coupled with the Omd -1 mk 2, gave me freedom to take a wide variety of Subjects. Yes the 12-200mm is not as sharp as PRO lenses when viewed on a monitor, but when printed out up to A3 on an Epson P600 then I struggle to see any difference. It great for being a do all, low weight easy to carry combination and all I need extra is a spare battery and lens cleaning cloth. Just make sure you have the correct stabilisation settings.

    Hi Robin, in 2017 and 2019 I was on fotosafari in south afrika. In 2017 I had a bridge Camera with me and had nice pictures in good quality. In 2019 I took my om1 with the 12-200. I was impressed about the performance of the lense and the sharpness of such a zoomlength. From Wide to tele, everything in one lense, no changing in dust, no problem with choosing which lenses should I take with me on the trip. The light was no problem at all. Next time it will be the 12-200 again, but with the om1 III.
    Im looking forward for your next video.

I'm planning to acquire the G9 & 2 or 3 lenses but I wonder if I'll find myself ' reaching ' for the Fz most often due to it's greater versatility in one package or instead choosing the G9 & assorted lenses due to the better image quality they can produce. I currently have and find myself using the Olympus 14-150mm 1:4-5.6 II the most on my E-M5 Mark II. The 12-200mm F3.5-6.3 looks very tempting as an all purpose lens. At overlapping focal lengths, is the 12-200mm F3.5-6.3 better in terms of Image Quality ie Sharpness and Contrast wise? I do not find myself limited by the wide end but definitely would like the extra reach, but not keen to forgo the current image quality.

    It will be interesting to do comparison with Tamron 16-300/3.5-6.3 on 20mpix APS-C as they both have very similar range coverage. Well Tamron is a bit longer with 450mm equiv.
    Size is similar (100mm length, Oly even has larger 72mm filters vs Tamron 67mm). Weight is also close 455g vs 540g, but Tamron squeezed even lens IS into that package. Both have 16 lenses in 11/12 groups.

My main question is: did you test it on an Olympus body? The reason I am asking is that I tried/tested it the other day on my Panasonic GX8 (which has a fairly good in-body stabilization) but it felt very shaky at 200mm. Hi Robin. Interesting video clip. I think for photography there are of course better quality lens as you state. However there is one aspect about this lens that had been somewhat overlooked. VIDEO. Unless shooting for broadcast standard this is ideal for video where the absolute quality is not so necessary. I have recently used this lens for shooting video of wildlife - Red Squirrel. There is no other lens that can quickly zoom back to wide angle to locate the subject and the zoom in for the video capture. Ideally a pro lens with around 20 - 250mm would be the perfect range with around an f6.3 through the range would be the ultimate. However This does not exist so I am using the 12 - 200mm as the only alternative. Olympus / OMD are missing an opportunity to get into the video market. Take care Peace 😊😊

I had the 14-150 mm on travels and was suprised how sharp an detailet the shot ere. So i upgraded to 12-200 not expecting too much. But to my suprise it was about as good as the 14-159mm - far more versatile. So, my beter 12-40 mm is hardly in use anymore. It is sharper - but how good sharpness do I need? Capturing eye cathing motives is far greater with the 12-200. And that is all it is about. And for this pupose it gives squite adequate sharpness

    Hi, nice video. Can you compare this lense to the 14-150? I have that lense and I'm thinking about trading it in for this one so I can use it for site seeing and travel. It looks a lot larger. Is it?

      @Ed-bj5eq 4 роки тому +1

      Felita Cavette, same here but I don't think it would be a good upgrade if it is slower at 150mm, considering the extra weight and size, pus and extra 50mm in reach at the slower f6.3 won't make much of a diference. Maybe better to buy the 75-300mm if you need more reach, or the 12mm f2 to get wider but much faster and better IQ

    Having already bought the Olympus 12-150 lens a month or two back for my Olympus OM10 MK 111 there is no way I'm going to reinvest with this lens unless someone buys the 12-150 from me and I get into the rat race again.....but I think I might just keep it and invest in a 2X converter and have a really super zoom..........that would give me 24-300mm in an instant.

      I am not aware of a Mark III version of 14-42mm, but if you are talking about the EZ Pancake lens, I have already made a video here: ua-cam.com/video/-m_8IwR4oFo/v-deo.html

    Hi Robin, thanks for your enthusiastic and informative OLYMPUS reviews. I have the E-M10ii with the two kit lenses. If I was wanting to upgrade should I look first at getting some Pro lenses for this camera, or first upgrade the body to an M1 or M5? I appreciate your help. Thanks

      Get the E-M1 Mark II. The E-M5 Mark II is aging now, a 5 years old product! E-M1 Mark II just got a new firmware 3.0 update earlier this year, giving it a whole new life!

      Currently Malaysia is hit with serious haze problem. I can't shoot things that are too far away (hence this video was just nice as everything was at close distance). Shall wait for the weather to clear a bit more before I can do anything wide angle. Rest assured the live composite video is definitely coming. I've got multiple requests

    Hi Robin.
    I've just been back to this video & realised this lens has many qualities I'd hope for in the new lenses on the latest Olympus lens road map (Nov 2019).
    Plastic, relatively compact for its capabilities, weather sealed, decent performance without being top line, with an upper mid-level price for those who value compactness & weight saving over ultimate quality & brightness.
    (Makes sense they offer it as a kit with the EM5iii).
    Of course I'd hope the new lenses will be brighter & maybe constant aperture.
    I plan to use the 12-200 lens in the wilds of Florida. I so often want to be at either end of the range on my nature walks that it's this lens, or a 2 camera setup, or missed shots.

    Hi Mr. Wong! I just bought my first camera on April tgis year, EM10markii with kit and prime lens 45mm and 1.8. I'm not planning to upgrade my body kit in near time, but I do consider to buy new lens.. sometimes I got contacted to do documentationn for event. I think vertality is key there. do you think this one is great paired with my m10 markii?

    • @cmartin_ok
      @cmartin_ok 4 роки тому +1

      EM10 mk II is a great camera . Check out comparisons between it, EM5 mk II and EM1... there's almost nothing in it. Am sure that this lens will go very well with your camera depending on what you are shooting and the ambient light levels. Probably struggle for night shots but should be ok for general day to day shooting and product photography

    I wounder if you know this
    If this lens has a 16,6x magnification, then how much magnification does the 40-150mm F2.8 pro lens and the 300mm F4 Pro has?

    • @HH60gPaveHawk
      @HH60gPaveHawk Рік тому

      Way late on this one, it 150/40= 3.7x magnification, that’s all the 16.6x means, it’s the tele focal length divided by the wide focal length

      The 50-150mm F2.8 is the Kind of the lens that gets the job done and is also stellar optically for portraits. I love mine. The 12-100mm F4 is a great combo if you need 2 zoom lenses.

    I'm torn between the F12-100 pro and F12-200 lens reviewed here.
    Presently I have the 14-42 pancake and 40-150 kit lens. I also have the 75-300 for special occasions.
    I've had a play with the 12-100 and 12-200 today as want to try and reduce amount of time changing between lenses when on holiday. I'm staggered by how good the Pro 12-100 is in indoor photography or lower light. I'm a little disappointed comparatively with the 12-200 in those environments but the convenience of the range along with the smaller size and lower weight is pushing me towards it over the 12-100 pro. I can't help but think I'd always want the things I haven't got though!

    I like your review Robin; the lens, not so much. A jack of all trades and a master of none - for over $800+. If you want to turn your MFT into a point and shoot, you can get a 14-150mm for $400.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  5 років тому +5

      I don't necessarily think the 14-150mm is a better choice, considering it has half the reach at the longest end, and it starts at 14mm. To some people, the extra 2mm makes a lot of difference shooting wide angle (me included). Having said that, I am a prime lens shooter, I don't mind switching lens. I have to admit, in terms of convenience that 12-200mm is tough to beat. That is what that lens is made for.

    • @datapro007
      @datapro007 5 років тому +1

      @@robinwong I'm not a big fan of either. I prefer fast primes, but that's just me. 150/200 = 3/4, not 1/2, for less than 1/2 the money. To each their own, no argument there.

      It's my favourite lens at the moment for travel or daylight shooting. If I only want one lens and the weather is good. If the circumstances are different, I just complement with the pro lens I need. It is just so convinient.

    M43 needs a really fast zoom with F1.8 constant Aperture , Lets say 12-70 / f1.8 .
    I know Its gonna be huge but , it will replace many lenses with just ONE glass .
    Consider this for a pro Line up .
    I have pana and olympus body , but since i have the Si Lumix with 24-105 / f4 and i really impressed with it . I just wishing If olympus or Panasonic could make 12-70mm with F 1.8 , it will be awesome , because it can create much shallower depth of field than the oly 12-100 F4 , but the most important thing is the IQ is Much better than the F4 because the shutter speed will be 2 and 1/3 stop better and will affect much lower ISO fe ; ISO 1600 >< ISO 320 with an F 1.8 .
    M43 has to much mediocre zooms , is time to step up with extra ordinary zoom .
    12-70 mm F1.8 (equi 24-140 mm)
    70-200 mm F2 ( equi 140-400 mm ).
