  • If you can only take one lens on your next holiday, what will it be? Jimmy tested the latest Olympus do-it-all 12-200mm super zoom lens, with a 16.6x that effectively covers a full frame equivalent of 24-400mm!! What's Jimmy verdict?? #Olympus #besttravellens #getolympus
    A big thank you to our guest model Saori (IG @saooOoori) for participating in the test❤️

    Almost a pro lens without the lens-IS, manual clutch, full metal built and slight softness at the tele-end and that constant aperture. But it's great for those who need just one lens for travel. Weather-seal!!!! Oh man!

    Nice and detailed review. I just got this lens for my Pany G 9 because I wanted a versatile reach, do-it-all lens & the closest Panasonic lens was the 14-140. Your wright - when zoomed out - with no lens stabilization - the G 9 has to work hard to compensate for the jitters at 200mm ( FF equ. 400mm ). Also on the zoom ring - it gets stiff @ the 175 ~ 200 range. I'm hoping this loosens up as it's used. Before getting the G 9, I had - and still do - the Pany Leica Fz 2500, f2.8 ~ 4.5, 24 ~ 480mm bridge camera which is ' VERY ' versatile. This is why I like the Oly 12 ` 200MM. I've learned - & like the Pany menu sys so I got the G 9. Enjoyed your vid & the girl was helpful with some tech. parts.

    What a wonderfully charming and engrossing review! It was perfect for a non-pro, like me. I'm going on an African safari, and my luggage is severely weight limited, so I am considering buying this lens, and taking it, instead of my current Lumix trio: 12-35 f2.8, 35-100 f2.8, and 100-300 f4.0-5.6. I can't decide if the tradeoff in focal length and photo quality will be worth the weight savings, and relief of not having to constantly change lenses. Do you have any thoughts/recommendations? Also, can you offer insight on what shooting video is like with this lens, especially regarding stabilization and auto-focus?

    Very interesting. I’ve been thinking of changing my Leica 12-60 f2.8-4 to the Olympus 12-100 f4, to make it more of a travel lens so I don’t have to take a bag of lenses with me. The 40-150 f2.8 and adaptors are quite bulky as Sally (?) demonstrated. Also I hadn’t realised it was weather sealed and of that quality. Off to the shops I think to check it against the pro, do i need the IBIS? Thanks very much for another great video.

    If I don't have a decided projekt when I go out for My Photo sessions, this has become my to go for lens, since it is so versatile. If I'm out in low Light situation I take one of my primes or pro zooms. You talk a lot of polycarbonate in the video. I think the reason that Olympus went for polycarbonate is that it is The most shock resistans plastic and also is weight reliveing. In The formula 1 they always use carbonfiber with epoxy to make the cars durable and Light weight. Nice video, Jimmy. Lot of Love from Sweden.

    I´ve seen many of your Leica lens reviews with great pics thus I was curious about your comments regarding this lens after I saw the MTF curves posted by Olympus. To be gentle it has a very versatile zoom range and apperently color errors aren´t that bad. Everybody has to evaluate IQ and value by his own benchmark. If rendering including sharpness and bokeh is satisfying for people - great. As I know many of your really good street shots, after having seen the pics in this video honestly I can´t understand that you find so many positive words for this lens.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  5 років тому +1

      Hi Ernst. Well, I review this lens base on what it's target audience is. Clearly it isn't a professional level lens. I seldom use zoom myself for street or in fact my work in general. But the appeal of this lens is the range, over anything else. I didn't even mention bokeh at all this video if you notice, simply because it wasn't the main focus point. Having a great range is good for those who just want one lens for travel. Sharpness is great at the wide end but I admit and also noted in my pinned comment on the page, that the tele end is soft when compare to Olympus' own pro lenses. To sum it up, if I am a parent/traveller who wants a light weight do-it-all lens, this is it. As a pro, I won't.

    • @arcaswissi
      @arcaswissi 5 років тому

      @@Red35Photography I agree with the range albeit I think the 12-100 is the much better lens and 100mm are plenty enough for 95% of the pics. What me shocked more than the poor sharpness at the long end was the rendering from sharp to unsharp and the horrendous bokeh which is so distracting that you despite the oof area look more there than on the model in the foreground. I can understand that it is a very tough challenge for lens producers to develop a lens from 12-200 but in my opinion Olympus hasn´t done them a favor. Probably I am too ambitious anyway and after the really for its range stunning 12-100 awaited too much. I suppose that there was a demand for such a lens else Oly wouldn't have developped it.

    • @katumus
      @katumus 5 років тому

      Mine 75-300 II has not got any scratches, but the 45mm f/1.8 does... Same with 60mm f/2.8 macro. I think the 30mm f/3.5 macro is more resistance, but I have had it only a year now.
      But 40-150mm f/4-5.6 and 75-300mm f/4.5-6.7 II are lenses that has very tough shell.
      I prefer these to PRO line that gets ugly when you get hard hits to it like from stones from car wheels etc... Metal is not so tough as industry plastic.

    I have always had a superzoom from my 1990 28-200mm (was it a Nikon fit Tokina or Tamron?) to my very first and current trip MFT lens, the Panasonic 14-140mm. I really dont know why I buy them as I am always seduced by the convenience, disappointed by the image quality and turned off by the extra weight, lack of compactness and lack of aperture. So, I took it on holiday last year and what did I end up using or more importantly which photos keeping? Well the answer after the fact is mostly, I used the Olympus 17mm f1.8 (about 60%) with a quite a lot of Panasonic 25mm f1.7 (often used with a x2 crop giving me a FF equivalent of 100mm). On one day I did use the stunning 45mm f1.8 which I mostly use for zoos. The truth is I always end up being disappointed with a superzoom and end up only using primes. On the last day, driving home I even preferred the 12-32mm pancake zoom at the wetland Centre. Will I buy another superzoom? Well you know the answer to that; I will buy a new camera system in the future and buy another superzoom for it . Yes I will be disappointed and it will spend its life gathering dust in my camera drawer like all the rest of them - sigh. Why do I do it? Have fun ;-)

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  5 років тому +2

      LOL, well, I can use it as a telescope too that allows me to take some shots and videos. Yes, I get what you mean. I too will resort back to my primes, as a prime guy would do, but playing with this super zoom was kind of fun. I took some shots at that 200mm end was just something.... crazy. Did I have fun? Oh yes :)

    • @vicibox
      @vicibox 5 років тому +3

      I think you have put your finger on it; its fun. The trouble with fun is it wears off. After a couple of weeks of novelty the lens ends up in a drawer. Once the novelty passes you are back to why you take photos and a more serious drive takes over; and nothing comes close to using a good prime lens chosen for the task in hand. Weirdly, my most surprising lens of the last 5 years (maybe most surprising ever) is the kit lens that came with my Panasonic GX9, the 12-32mm pancake zoom; It covers my main focal lengths of 35mm and 50mm. I was just going to buy the body as usual but had seen a video by Dom Bower extolling its virtues so for only £99 extra, bought the kit to try it out. Frankly, I thought it was plasticy rubbish, plug ugly and the front element so exposed as to always be covered in body prints. Well that I could fix, bought a Leica style metal lens hood. Took it out round a lake and it blew me away. The image quality was stunning (I have several sunflower images at the 12mm end from it in my latest show "Dark Paths" Instagram@vicisnaps) and it now looked quite elegant as the hood balanced the overall style. It reminded me of my Leica IIIg with collapsing Summicron. This lens is now my firm favourite convenience lens and I choose it always over my superzoom unless I am visiting a wildlife hide and need 140mm.

    I was watching Rob Trek videos on C-AF and Bokeh differences from Kit, premium and pro lens and it is absolutely impressive how good the 12-40mm Pro lens is. I figured this lens would be a bit slow on C-AF and the Bokeh is ok but when you consider what it can do for travel photography, WOW! I've seen some sample photos too, I'm impressed with the sharpness. Seeing this lens on an EM10, just getting a grip could resolve the size of this lens but its still not too huge. Looking at it on your EM1, it looks just right. Very good video.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  5 років тому +1

      Cheers Rob! Yes, it's not bad at all considering what it's aiming at. It's not a pro lens and not pretending to be and if you want the best build, optical performance and ruggedness, still have to pay that premium. But this is an impressive piece of glass. Light weight, good image quality and man, that massive range is just cool to have sometimes when you want to keep everything small. Oh yes, it fits just right on the EM1 II :)

    Thanks for the review Jimmy. Nice setup.
    Unfortunately I'm still struggling between 12-200 and 12-100.
    I do own the 12-40 f2.8 and a pana 35-100 f2.8 already... So the 12-100 may actually fully replace those two, whereas the 12-200 would be more an add on to the gear.
    Why do I take a look at all at those lenses?
    Especially for taking photos of my little kid and traveling the patience (not mine) while changing lenses is diminishing.

      @@undergreenthunder8037 I tested the 12-200 for 2 days in the olympus test program. It did not convince me at all. The sharpness didn't meet my expectations. At 200mm I compared the photo with my 35-100mm f2.8 at 100mm digitally cropped and the 35-100mm was clearly sharper. Thus I decided the extra reach of the 12-200 is not worth going for.
      Meanwhile have the 12-100 and love it as always on family trip lens. Sharpness is good, SyncIS is amazing.
      Maybe I had a bad version of the 12-200 🤔... However I with the syncIS I would decide again for the 12-100.
      Hope this helps.

      I really appreciate you taking the time to tell me this. You mentioned it is your family trip lens but does that mean you would not use it professionally? How do you think it would perform for forest photography? That would be my interest. I am drawn to the convenience and you really can’t compete with the close focusing distance I would be giving up with the 40-150 2.8 pro.

      Happy to help.
      I can't compare it to the 40-150 f2.8 which I do not own. (tried it once and was astonished by the sharpness)
      Whether the 12-100 is good enough for professional photography? Can't judge - as it's my hobby only. I do not have any concern regarding the sharpness and see it comparable to my 12-40 f2.8
      For the close up or light macro I see the 12-100 quite good as well - the specialty of the lens however is that you achieve the biggest magnification of 0.3x wide open at 12mm. (gives some nice extra depth of field compared to my 30 and 60mm macro lenses). The 12-100 is a convenience lens for me when I do not want to change lenses due to weather or time restrictions.
      Maybe in your country olympus offers the test-wow where you can test the lens for free for some days at an Oly dealer. I would give it a try before buying to check whether it fulfills your expectations - as we are talking about quite some $¢€¥£

      Acually, 12-200 is a bigger extended brother of 14-150 II, as I understand. Depends if you need 12-14 and 150-200 at the ends. I have the first version of 14-150 and it is a great lens. Light and versatile. I went to Iran to travel with just 14-150 and Samyang 7.5/2.8 - and that was enough for most of the situations.

    The problem is that Bokeh quality is simply horrendous! I never saw a lens producing images with such a busy background, which is a big deal for such a long lens able to separate subjects and background so much. I don't think I could stand it even accepting the restrictive minimum aperture and for just a bit more I could go for the MUCH BETTER 40-150 with tele extender F2.8 which is currently being sold slightly above 1000€

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  5 років тому +3

      Thanks for watching mate. Well, I never even mention the word bokeh in this video. This lens isn't for that purpose, and if you ware after separation, yes, you are totally right, pro lenses or other prime lenses will give you that. This is a swiss army knife that give you that crazy range. Bokeh is subjective and depends on how one uses it. I think it's a versatile lens for content creator too for those long b-roll shots in video as well as some stills if you want to get that lion eating that eagle :)

    • @Leptospirosi
      @Leptospirosi 5 років тому

      Well, the problem IMO is that with such a long lens you'll have to deal with it poor out of focus rendition quality, not just because you want to create it, but because you can't really avoid it: between 150 and 400mm equivalent focals, the out of focus will be prominent whatever aperture you set even reaching the point of heavy diffraction. This lens will not be cheap by any standard or measure, even if not to the pro lens level, but I wonder if it's not worth parting from a couple of hundred bucks more and get a 40-150pro with tele converter. You obviously have to already own a shorter ranged zoom, but I doubt someone buying a m43 camera would buy this super zoom as his "only" lens.

    • @katumus
      @katumus 5 років тому

      Focal length doesn't change DOF if your subject fills same size in frame and you use same F-ratio.
      Meaning, 12mm has same DOF from close range than 200mm has from long range when both taken at f/6.3 etc.

    You say the image quality is "great", however in most shots, it just looks "OK". The photos lack clarity and "pop" (critical sharpness). Maybe because you edited the photos for typical portrait looks? Also the bokeh is very busy. Two things I would like to see additionally in a lens review: Show some other subjects than a female model -- and show different focal lengths, different lighting, etc. Basically show that you had the lens for more than a single 1-2h shoot. Secondly, provide 100% crops. It's hard to judge a 20MP image from a 2MP video stream. Would also be interesting to see this compared to the (excellent IMHO) Panasonic 14-140mm travel lens.
