In total, there were 3 piers in Brighton. There was the Chain Pier and West pier built around the same time, in the early 1900s, and then the Palace Pier in 1990. The West Pier really was a great loss.
I've been to Brighton about 15 years ago. I think this pier was already nearly demolished those days. It was an unused pier. So not a big lost I think. Probably it could collapse in a stormy weather.
it was....I witnessed guys in a speed boat shot a flare into it. I was having breakfast and watched it through the window, foggy day and early morning ....never forget....I was one of many who called the fire brigade

Listed buildings in Brighton have always had a remarkable ability to burn down...
@THEPODULE You are right guy! The Palace Pier is behind the West Pier. I was ther in this year..
It's Fingers playin with his matches again! Hi Steve C!!!
Actually, the pavilion burnt down on 28th of March 2003 and the concert hall on 12th may, the same year. You caught that video in march!
It seems ironic that these piers burn so furiously when they are surrounded by water. Great loss.
It was a fabulous pier actually.

I'm going Brighton next month for my birthday weekend with a couple of mates. Really excited about it, hope the girls are nice :-D!
No, that's the other pier, this is the West pier.
why did they set fire to it?
I don't think anyone knows how it caught fire, I've heard it said that it might have been arson.
