Mate, this is one of the best reviews I've seen on YY for a while! I had a lot of fun using the Focus Pro and RS4 Pro over the past couple of weeks but you took it to a whole new level haha! Just got myself a Helios not long ago so was awesome to see some shots in this too :)
You made me want one. Looking at the “compatibillity list” i dont see any cinema cameras, including one that I have (C70). I am lost - looks so cool and pro but its only for mirrorless?
This is a great upgrade from being forced to having to use the gimbal along with the lidar. BUT this setup is truly geared towards creators that want to use Cine lenses. That’s where the strength of this setup lies.
If I understand things correctly you need the Creator Pro kit + the Pro Lidar to have the AF working if you're a solo shooter with a gimbal. I got an RS3 today, the basic model. But I really like to use my manual lenses easier while on a gimbal and well even off gimbal. Do I have to buy the RS4 pro then? Must say I am tempted in the RS4 Pro anyway but just trying to figure everything out
Hi! I was wondering if you have tips on intergrating the focus pro system with a wireless monitoring system. We're shooting with the panasonic S1H would like to see how we can integrate a follow focus system with a monitoring system
Hey Jacques, Super cool seeing such good quality local content and reviews being made, based in CT myself. Wanted to ask, is it possible to use Lidar + Motor + Hand Unit without the focus pro Grip? I work as a 1st AC and would want to be able to mount Lidar and Motor on camera and keep all other controls out of the DP / Operators way Thanks Peter
Thanks for the video! You say “any camera, any lens”. I’m have fujifilm XH2s, service support told me that it’s not in compatible list…I don’t think there should something so special that it’s not compatible with my camera. Do you have any specific info about compatibility with any cameras?
I have spent the last 3 days looking at Tilta Solutions to this problem...for both full focus control I can have on my Gimbal and offload it when I need to...fantastic! Thanks for the video!
That shot of you adjusting your Tilta Hydra arm. Are those extra weights on top of the included weights? Is that how you mitigate the micro vibrations?
Thank you for the video. I'm surprised if your clients would actually see the difference between Tamron/Sigma 24-70 and DZO 35-80 lenses. Is it better to use Sony's reliable autofocus with fewer issues than DJI Focus? And if companies hire someone with expensive gear and skills, could they still hire a focus puller?
Amazing content as usual 😊 How did you manage to connect the Hand Unit with the monitor? If I'm not mistaken, there should be a monitor holder available that connects the Focus Hand Unit with the monitor.
Was vibing with the intro and then my face popped up! Haha couldn’t agree more with everyone looking for a unique look. Came for the review / showcase and looks like we’re picking up a kit for our productions as well. Thanks for a great video dude!
Nice overview video for sure. If one is to put on a scale from 1 to 10 on old manual lenses how good the lidar focus would be and to which focal length does it apply - i.e: what would be the minimum [x] mm and max [x] mm? Thank you advance
amazing video! was wondering if its possible using the Focus Pro with the RS3 Pro Gimbal and if it means needing to have two handles? One from the focus pro, and the usual RS3 Pro gimbal handle to move the camera?
Hey! so I couldn't tell with some of your rigs if you had it on your FX6, but was wondering if you have tried it, the fx6 is not on their supported camera list so im a little stuck on if I should buy it or not.
Actually, with the High Bright monitor, when you add the SDI-out module, does it transmit the LIDAR overlay to any monitor? I know there's still a big issue of signal delay (DJI Transmission is not 0-delay unlike Teradeks or Vaxis), but having LIDAR overlay on any monitor would be awesome!
an extremely thorough review, all I wanted to hear about this brand new product. Jacques, great job and I know have said it before, you are a huge inspiration.
I am only in the middle of your video but I have a question : how many lenses can you calibrate? Stil 3 like the RS3 Pro? Because it seems when you clicked on C1 for the example you could calibrate more lenses. Thanks
Question: I am so happy this finally exists, but I also would love to invest in the DJI RS4. Will I be stuck with two Focus Pro Grips, or is their some interoperability? Great video, and thanks!
Does anyone know if there are still latency issues with the transmission? I’ve heard a lot of first acs were unhappy with it when it first came out. Seems like it’s not a problem anymore. Maybe it improved with firmware upgrades
This is game changing! I've just picked up a Helios and manual pulling and concentrating on composition is hard! But no longer haha ... incredible review as always dude. The visuals are unquestioned :O
You see, this is why I use ND's and Diffusion filters from brands like K&F and Neewer. Because their "dirty artifacts" make for a compelling image. (actually no, I buy them because I'm poor, but still, it's unique I guess haha!) Anyways, DJI is making some crazy tech man! Great video!
Jacques, hey bro... I was just watching this and thought i'm sure I know that guy. Im Richard VanWkys, business partner; you shot his wedding many moons ago.. anyway just wanted to say great video, and im defo gonna be getting this unit, looks amazing.. finally AF for my Black Magics 👊🏻
Quick question how to you attach the manual focus ring to the helios lens? Mine has these nudges that make it not completely round so the follow focus isn't gripping properly. Because of that I have only used the lens in non moving scenes as I can't attach my follow focus properly
Why can't we have the lens marks on the hand unit screen. There is only a percentage when pulling focus. Would be awesome to have digital lens marker profiles the same as in the Arri WCU/Hi5
Would it be possible to use DJI Focus Pro on an RS 3 mini? The Grip connected on the gimbal side, considering that (camera, lens, LiDAR and focus motor) were within the 2kg load of the RS 3 mini.
I cannot see why that won't work! Technically it has to work on ANY gimbal as long as you can connect the LiDAR to the grip with USB-C without throwing of the balance!
Can you use this in a blackmagic camera with an electronic Panasonic lumix g x vario lens? It doesn’t have hard stops. This stopped me from buying the pdmovie lidar
As far as I can tell The creators kit comes only with 1 focus motor. How do we get 3 focus motors for cinema zoom lenses ? Or is it not possible to control all three as a single operator ?
Yes that is correct! You have to purchase the extra motors. As a single operator you can only control 2 motors by yourself but you can choose if it's Zoom, Focus or Iris.
Can anyone confirm the information that the new DJI Focus Pro can work with Panasonic S5ii and S5iiX natively, without the presence of the motor on the focus ring and just needs the LiDAR unit and the new DJI handle?
Here's an idea. Not sure if possible with current setup or not, but maybe (just a software update). The idea is to capture the lidar (depth) video or sequence along with the video so that it can be used in compositing. If this idea turns next gen lidar into super next gen, just have them kick me some cash.

Hey man. I very recently purchased the Lidar, so now I'm gutted they have just updated it. Do you have experience with the original Lidar and if so how would you compare it? Cheers
Aaah sorry to hear that Luigi! To be honest, the previous one is still good especially if you shoot people at close range. I think this new one will work better with cars, and when there are more people in the frame + extra range.
It looks incredible. My only complaint is its using USB-C cables instead of locking lemo and you can't adjust where the motor sits. I still think it has potential on professional sets, maybe not on the top end but medium to larger crews for sure. The feedback I've gotten from industry pros about the DJI Transmission is crazy and it's already being adopted on so many high budget productions (totally destroys the competition with signal reliability) and I see this as an extension of that!
Thank you for your detailed and informative review. The strange thing is I've watched 3 videos on this subject but nobody mentions the limitation of this tool. Its field of view is 70 degree. That means if your subject is OUTSIDE the 70 degree field of view, the auto focus of this tool is NOT ACCURATE any more. This is listed on DJI website. Thanks any way.
Thanks Mauricio! To be honest, 70 degree is enough. Even on my 21mm it's enough and the subject has to go to the edge of frame before losing it which is unlikely that I would ever let that happen but the AI recognition can quickly pick up a subject once it enters frame again, it's soo clever!
@@jacques_crafford Thank you very much for providing the focal length of 21mm that you use for your cameras. When possible, I will try it at 24mm on my camera with DJI Focus Pro to see if my subject is still in focus when he's at the edge.
I spent some money to purchase Dune part1 and I found it BORING as hell. I've only watched about 15mins of Dune part2 which is still not interesting yet. One thing that stood was the stunning cinematography from sound design to visuals - it was the best no doubt. But the story could have been better. I had so much expectations. But I'll give it another chance in the next few weeks but for now, highly disappointed. FYI great review on the DJI Focus Pro LiDAR as well @Jacques
Sure this may work for single-op one-person setup, but as a focus puller, the weak point to this is that in order to get the birds-eye LIDAR overlay, you have to go thru the high-bright monitor which DOES NOT have SDI output (I'd want to output video to my SmallHD 1303) and it has latency. You have to spend another $500 to get the SDI/HDMI output module and from reviews the quality of that add-on has been horrible.
I'm guess the high bright monitor is the only monitor that can give the lidar's waveform top down view? I was thinking it would be great if that could somehow overlay on other monitors and apps but I guess that's not very realistic as it's a software issue. Overall THIS is the DJI product I've personally been waiting for as all the previous solutions was either too clunky and convoluted or forcing one to use the 4D which is not the camera nor lens I'd want for my stuff. I had a feeling they would open this us and happy they did - only issue now is that all in one comes in at 1850 USD but to have the high bright monitor as well would be another 1700, grips another 730 plus other random bits let's just say another 150 and we're at over $4,400 USD .... Interesting that the all in one is more expensive than most of the gimbals out there - but it IS really nice to have. I'll probably wait a bit for learning random kinks in lens/camera combo's and spring initially for just the all-in one and see how that goes.
Aaaah yes, unfortunately the waveform will only work on the DJI Monitor. I guess that was their plan from the start to integrate everything with the hopes of people buying into the entire eco-system. It's a lot of money once off and I can see not everyone going for it. Getting each item over time helps but with their track record of releasing new gear all the time I wouldn't want to wait too long haha!
I couldn’t focus on the video content because the colour grading is sooo good 😅

The DJI lidar works with zoom lenses? Just a single calibration or need to recalibrate when you change the focal lenght?
Can you use a second zoom motor with the grip or do you need the external control unit for focus and zoom?
This is a great upgrade from being forced to having to use the gimbal along with the lidar. BUT this setup is truly geared towards creators that want to use Cine lenses. That’s where the strength of this setup lies.
