Eddie found it very insulting for George to say that he would go to the cops. I think that set him off more than the idea that George would have him killed.
First saw this movie as a child as was just mesmerized by the Eddie Bartlett character. As an adult I have seen the movie so many times as it remains a all time favorite of mine! Never before have I ever seen gangster portrayed with so much heart and depth. His Love for Jean was so deep that in the end he gave his life for her! That ending still just blows me away no matter how many times I see it! You really grow to love Eddie in this movie. He definitely goes out a hero in the end. Panama is so Loyal to Eddie despite torch he carries for Jean. I also love her for that. By the way the Eddie Bartlett and Panama characters were based on 2 real people Gangster Larry Fay and Speakeasy Hostess Texas Guinan. There is actually video footage of Texas Guinan on U tube. Lastly one other scene that really touched me was when Eddie saw Jean and Lloyd walking down the street and punched Lloyd the hurt look on Eddie's face always gets to me. That's when he starts drinking to get over Jean. Cagney was just pure gold in this Flick! Love it!
This a gangster film that was far ahead of it's time. Instead of gangsters being depicted as malcontents who wanted cash and expensive baubles, they were given a third dimension. Eddie Bartlett was simply doing what he needed to do in order to survive.
Ricardo Cantoral Right he was a disillusioned soldier left to rot by the government after the war and took advantage of the most obvious hustle of the time - the booze racket, in order to survive and then got in too deep.
Your dad was right. I think numerous great gangster flicks have come out since (obvious examples are THE GODFATHER I & II, GOODFELLAS, CASINO, etc.) but THE ROARING TWENTIES remains the platinum standard.
Fun fact: Bogie was actually a prep school trust fund baby. He matriculated at Andover before he started an acting career. Never would guessed from how he played his roles.
Well, Bogie did one last time play a dirty rotten bad guy late in his career with THE DESPERATE HOURS (1955) and the death of his character is appropriately unsympathetic.
I seen a thing on TCM year's ago. It was on Bogart. He'd asked the Studio's why he always had to get killed. They answered, Cause you die so good on screen.
Eddie Bartlett (Cagney) may have hit the skids but he accomplishes one last thing and takes most of the bad guys with him. Classic Cagney at his best. George (Bogart) certainly didn't beat his last rap, lol.
If only this movie did not come out at the same time with Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz who got so much publicity, this movie would have been huge, it is better than Angels with Dirty Faces IMO.
O:41 Cagney & Bogie were my favourite classic gangsters. No 21st century actors can measure up to them. *Favorite Cagney Films* Public Enemy, The Roaring Twenties, Angels with Dirty Faces & G-Men. *Favorite Bogie Films* Casablanca, Key Largo & Angels with Dirty Faces. ✌😎✌
Yes I agree. Bogie came from money and Cagney from the streets. "If you know what I mean?" I love Cagney more than more than Bogart only because when I think of Cagney I thing of him dancing. Was Bogart a dancer? Again late to program.
I was happy to see this movie for free on UA-cam. Unfortunately, there were german subtitles throughout the whole movie. I still enjoyed it to the end. Can't nobody play these gangster roles better than both Cagney and Bogart. These are my guys!
Met James Gagney on Martha's Vineyard had two Irish whiskey with him in 1983... Prolific actor!... James taught me one thing..."Be real... authentic!... that's it;... don't pretend...Thx James!
I wanted suit like a Humphrey Bogart to sister s wedding. i did n t to be weddind 20 years, so i asked a one old and wise. I think now, that Bogart never made iron to him suit...
Any expert know what movie clip it was that was edged into this movie when the orator is talking about prohibition? I'm referring to the scene when a guy opens a door and a man sitting at a desk with cigar had money in his hands
Cagney on acting in his autobiography: Plant your feet on the ground and mean what you say. (I wish I still had a copy of Cagney on Cagney; I think I just read it at the used bookstore as a teenager). He saw Bogart picking his nose at at a red light and sent him a poem: “Hollywood is full of pimps and poses. But fancy stars in fancy cars shouldn’t pick their noses.” I think I flubbed that first line a bit, but Bogart never responded to the poem, I believe.
They were descent actors. Not overly impressive like Kurt Russel, Sam Elliot or someone much much more talented in versatility like Michael Keaton. Actors are to make you believe what they are doing on screen is absolutely real. So can you see James Cagney or Humphrey Bogart be Bettleguise?? Or Batman?? Lol....think about it. Who really are the greatest male actors of all time??
Eddie found it very insulting for George to say that he would go to the cops. I think that set him off more than the idea that George would have him killed.
Great acting by Bogart. Going from top dog big shot to sniveling coward without missing a beat.
Marvellous!
"something like that" the way Cagny delivers that line, as a spent, beaten down man is amazing!
'He used to be a big shot'. Greatest last line - almost as good as 'no body's perfect'
Cagney!!! Classic! Nothing else to say!!
Facts!!!
Yes sir

My dad cosidered it The best gangster film ever!

White heat
"Cagney in the end is aways true to his BEST self.." said one narrator in a documentary about his screen persona...
Fun fact: Bogie was actually a prep school trust fund baby. He matriculated at Andover before he started an acting career. Never would guessed from how he played his roles.
You can tell this one came out before Bogie really hit his stride. Otherwise, his death scene would have been more glorious.
Well, Bogie did one last time play a dirty rotten bad guy late in his career with THE DESPERATE HOURS (1955) and the death of his character is appropriately unsympathetic.

I think Bogie is great in this.
Three actors who could always play gangster roles well during the Golden Age of movies were Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, and Edward G Robinson.
Don't forget George Raft
Without a doubt Bogie's biggest and best gig before being promoted to lead actor.
A year later everything would change for Bogie in "High Sierra". he would be top billed from then-on.
Weird to see Humphrey scared. He fits better as a leading man, but all the Cagney/Bogart films are classics
Only Cagney can make him so😅
The Greatest Movie Ever Made.
Agreed 💯 Always loved Cagney and Bogart in the Movie about a great Era in American History!!
Eddie Bartlett (Cagney) may have hit the skids but he accomplishes one last thing and takes most of the bad guys with him. Classic Cagney at his best.

More realistic

Two of my favorite actors ever!
Love it!! Taped it on TCM along with Public Enemy. A Real Square Guy!! So much Talent!!! Cagney Forever!!! 🇺🇸💪🏻🍺
One of my favorite scenes of all time
This is just after a henchman delivers the best line in the film. "the rags of his pants are beating him to death"
They Cut It Off But I Love the Line "Eddie Must Have Spoken Out of Turn."

So good.
Bogart and Cagney….what a pair!
👏 👏 👏 👏 Riveting scene!!
One of my favourite films bloody great
Great movie
I think Bill Burr could play James Cagney in the biopic
Classic rub-out.
Jerry Lewis did a great James Cagney impression on the Colgate Comedy Hour 😂
He made fun of Cagney in Oscar 1956, right in front of him
@@andresihotang2314 and Cagney retorted. I like him I like him
Cagney was so real, trying to convince George to let Lloyd go so that they could have the life he never could have.
Named my dog Eddie Bartlett
This is one rap u wont beat
My favorite Cagney picture.
He’s tremendous, as always.
Bogart is fantastic, and this is by far the most vile character he ever portrayed.

Cagney IS #1!!!!!
