It’s interesting that you talk about psychology, because psychology is, in many ways, the study of human behavior. Who do people act the way they do? It’s been many years since I have umpired, but I said then what I’ll say now - umpiring is a fascinating way to observe and study human behavior, and one can learn a great deal about human behavior by working as an umpire. One of the most vivid memories that stands out was from a men’s league in the area - high level, as many of the players had spent time in the minors. The managers were also players, and the manager/player pinch hit late in the game. He didn’t like a belt-high curve ball on the outside corner (which was a bit of a hanger, but it the zone). He grumbled about the call, and because it was his first at-bat, I politely let him know that the pitch was in the zone. I did most games behind the plate, as I had a reputation for a consistent strike zone. I extended the courtesy of letting him know where the zone was, since it was his first at-bat in the game. Well, he still objected to the call, and of course the catcher heard every word of this, and called for the exact same pitch in the exact same location. Which was what the pitcher threw. Strike three, and the batter (also the manager) went ballistic. I’m not the tallest person in the world, and he towered over me, vociferously stating his objection. Now he never touched me, he had enough self control on that, but of course I had no choice but to eject him (I actually ejected very few players or coaches), but he was furious. Well, a few days later, I was doing a completely different game, and when talking about this incident with my partner, and he said that he thought he knew why the player/manager was so angry. Apparently he was extremely upset about a controversial call in a previous game. So he really wasn’t angry with me, he was still upset over a call in a previous game. I just happened when the straw broke the camel’s back. As I said, one can learn a lot about human behavior.
The psychological aspect of the plate is fascinating in general. No other sports are built like that, where the official is right there stationery making on the spot calls over and over essentially directing the flow of the game. The background noise. When the umpire makes a decision that takes the bat out of your hands that’s one part but then knowing you will have to walk back to the bench and the pitcher won that round sucks. The pitcher dunked you and the umpire punked you. Essentially on called strike threes the umpire is saying “according to my judgment, you should’ve tried there but didn’t. Go sit down.” I’ve played and umpired so I see both sides.
I umpired high school ball throughout college to make some extra cash and because I liked the game. Umpiring has most definitely taught me a lot about life, human behavior, and leadership. As an 18 year old first year guy, I had never been directly the target of insults and anger. It was quite overwhelming but fascinating as well. Grown men in the dugout and stands yelling over strike calls, check swings, and balks. Funny thing is, I never got any argument from a player. Ever. Umpiring is a unique experience. I would suggest anyone who loves baseball to suit up for a year and see the game from the other side. There could be human psychology case studies from the eyes of an umpire.
This game should have never been played though. The game started late because of what the weather was supposed to be and then once the rain started to come down, the rain came down. The timing was horrible when the game was called. Should have never been played.
Conversely, if Verdugo had fired the ball back at the fan and beaned his ass Verdugo would be sued for millions. The fan hits him and just gets kicked out of the stadium. He needs to be arrest for assault and battery. As best as I can tell the score was tied at the end of 6 innings. It is not a called game nor is it a rainout as your title suggests. It is a suspended game to be resumed with the Red Sox coming to bat in the top of the 7th
He may have *been* arrested for A&B. If I were a part of the Boston Red Sox, I would have demanded the Yankees make an announcement that if any objects were thrown onto the field then the Yankees would forfeit the game. Of course the problem with that is that a Red Sox fan may throw something onto the field to steal a win for his or her team...
5:40 - I apologize in advance for not knowing the name of the person who is doing the commentary on this vid, but it doesn't take a licensed, professional psychologist to explain why everybody was supportive of Verdugo's reaction to being thrown at by a fan in the stands. I *absolutely* agree with his insightful commentary that essentially says that Verdugo is all alone out there. All the outfielders are alone out there, for that matter. It's really, really unlikely to happen, given the baskets lining the wall and the height of the wall, but what if someone right behind Verdugo had jumped the wall and gone after him on the field?? He would have been a sitting duck for a second or two. You might think, "Oh, one or two seconds... big whoop", but bad things can happen in one or two seconds. This. Is. A. Big. Deal., and I think the Red Sox reacted to and handled it appropriately. I also agree with the point made near the end of the video about fairness being shown to both teams. One team playing defense and then seeing the game called at the half inning isn't fair to the other team, *UNLESS* things got *REALLY* bad, weather-wise, during the TV timeout after the half inning was over.
It should be noted that Vazquez “swung” at that breaking ball because of the first curveball of the AB, which clearly missed the plate by a considerable margin. How can you expect to hit a premium pitcher like Cole when two of your three strikes were BS?

I really admire Linds' attention to the mental health and well-being of the officials, players, and sometimes, maybe even those "manager" guys that yell a lot, too. (Yes, of course - mental health is important for all, and so is a little light-hearted humor.) Totally unacceptable to throw balls at baseball players in a game - I've had security clear the left-field bleachers of fans after we had keychains being thrown at a right-fielder during a lower-league game. I spoke to the player and he told me, with his eyes wide open like he was scared for his life, that he "did not feel safe, please don't make me go out there" - at which point myself and another crew member had the fans moved/cleared. Fortunately, there was plenty of seating near the other team's dugout to accomodate them. We certainly couldn't have kicked them all out - you can only have a specific fan or his specific group removed, or their co-actors - at least in most ballparks. Some owners will go HAM and kick everyone out to be a big man/lady.
Remember the game. The screw the Sox game. Having a 8-0 record or something. At the least I know the Yankees hadn't beaten them yet that year, They delayed the game for an hour when it's not raining and it's pouring for the last three Innings that were actually played, and when the Yankees Take the Lead magically it's no longer good enough to play on and they win.
It's only gonna be a matter of time before something fatal happens inside a stadium. The fans have gone abjectly berserk with this whole COVID situation.
Why was SD @ WSH suspended, not completed early? A shooting outside the ballpark is not one of the reasons to suspend a game under Rule 7.02(a), and so because the game was called, it should have ended under Rule 7.01(g)(4).
What is interesting is that in 2015 the Red Sox and Orioles completed a game as a riot was going on outside the stadium in Baltimore. That evening was not a warm & fuzzy feeling.

check swing changed in the 80s. Back then it was don't break the plane, then its not a strike. Then sometime in the late 80s it was changed to "breaking the wrists" which the point at which the wrist change position and transfer power. The umpires are not trained to properly deal with unsafe situations they are they are there to make sure that the game is played according to the rules beyond that you have to have you have to have the local police get involved and do their jobs they are the ones that should be declaring public safety issues and if someone throws anything at a player it has now become a public safety issue And the game just from a safety standpoint should have been called let alone that is a lot of rain I've seen games called for a whole lot less As far as what happened in Washington I think everything happened according to plan you got the players and their family members to safety and then you ask everybody to leave and everyone did and nobody got hurt am I surprised that happened no I think it's gonna happen a lot more

We certainly couldn't have kicked them all out - you can only have a specific fan or his specific group removed, or their co-actors - at least in most ballparks. Some owners will go HAM and kick everyone out to be a big man/lady.
The New York Mets Luis Rojas got ejected in the bottom of the 1st inning today vs the Pittsburgh Pirates.
MLB said Red Sox bench coach Will Venable ejected by 1B umpire Manny Gonzalez & Red Sox catcher Kevin Plawecki ejected by HP umpire Jeff Nelson
If that’s a swing I am the pope.
It was not a swing but the umpire called it a swing and he is wrong.
When was kevin plawecki ejected I only saw vanable get ejected
there were a lot of red shirts in that part of the stands ... they probably saw who it was
Other Yankees fans saw it all and he got escorted out.
So Back to the Alex Verdugo incident Ken Rosenthal has said the fan threw the baseball at Alex Verdugo Back
That should be an automatic home team forfeit. Player safety.
It's only gonna be a matter of time before something fatal happens inside a stadium. The fans have gone abjectly berserk with this whole COVID situation.
Fans that assault players, coaches, and umpires with ANYTHING MUST BE PROSECUTED TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW.⚾️
Good job Gilly!
Why all the stadiums don’t have roof capabilities !?🤦🏽♂️
Had no idea they are also psychologists at CloseCallSports.
York yankees love you ❤
Hey Manny, next time actually pay attention to what's happening instead of just guessing.
Why was SD @ WSH suspended, not completed early? A shooting outside the ballpark is not one of the reasons to suspend a game under Rule 7.02(a), and so because the game was called, it should have ended under Rule 7.01(g)(4).
OBR 7.02(a)(1) is generally the catch-all public safety/law rationale for suspending the game as opposed to ending it.
What is interesting is that in 2015 the Red Sox and Orioles completed a game as a riot was going on outside the stadium in Baltimore. That evening was not a warm & fuzzy feeling.
I think common sense is what prevailed in Washington. I think the general MLB "rule" now after the TB-Phi WS game is every game gets a 9 (or in Doubleheaders 7) inning conclusion
@@PriceRight89 actually the first riot was on Saturday 4/25/15 when the Red Sox were in town. We left the stadium after the game not knowing if Sunday’s game would be played or at what time. It did get played at it’s scheduled time. The White Sox came to town on Monday 4/27 and the games on 4/27-28 were postponed. The 4/27 game got banged around 6pm, the 4/28 game was officially called around 4pm, I had been at the stadium since around 2. The teams, MLB, Baltimore police and the players association were all involved in the discussions.
No need this game should’ve been played after the 5th the rain was pouring down! Unacceptable by Major League Baseball
As long as the field is playable and players can grip the ball it’s okay
there were like 3 check-swing calls--all went against the sox---the umps gave the game to the yanks---nelson must be a new yorker
You don't have to have a degree in mental health to recognize that there's something wrong.
they should have cleared that whole section
WTF is wrong w. people.🤬🙄
What do you personally know about mental health? Jw... but is a big issue and should be talked about more
Duggan needs to calm the F down. Tough guy. Grow a longer fuse.
check swing changed in the 80s. Back then it was don't break the plane, then its not a strike. Then sometime in the late 80s it was changed to "breaking the wrists" which the point at which the wrist change position and transfer power. I don't know why this change was made but it affected baseball at all levels. Here you can see the batter reaches the plane at the plate but doesn't break his wrists, so its a strike.
I hate to burst your bubble but the "breaking the wrists" has absolutely NOTHING to do do with this rule.
None of that is in the rules.
@@backwardsK45 hate to burst your bubble, but its not in the rule because it can't be defined and perfected, so the rule is not exact. Its also stated in Wikipedia, which is not a complete place of reference, but the comment "did he break his wrists?" was said once the rule was changed in the 80s. You would have to watch complete games in the late 80s to hear commentators say "did he break his wrists?" on a check swing reference to the first base umpire. I remember it clearly.
@@119Agent check Wiki, im not referring to wiki but even they say breaking the wrists. The rule is not defined because at any point at a checked swing, the bat can accidently hit the ball, and some batters have different momentum stops than others. But i clearly remember in late 80s games TV commenters referring to replays as "did he break his wrists?".
@@119Agent your right, its not in the rules, its the decision of the umpire, my bad.
The umpires are not trained to properly deal with unsafe situations they are they are there to make sure that the game is played according to the rules beyond that you have to have you have to have the local police get involved and do their jobs they are the ones that should be declaring public safety issues and if someone throws anything at a player it has now become a public safety issue And the game just from a safety standpoint should have been called let alone that is a lot of rain I've seen games called for a whole lot less
As far as what happened in Washington I think everything happened according to plan you got the players and their family members to safety and then you ask everybody to leave and everyone did and nobody got hurt am I surprised that happened no I think it's gonna happen a lot more
In Yankee Stadium there's Police AND security in the building. He was pointed out and removed quickly.
Mcdonalds love you 😍 😘 ❤
I've seen worse non swings than that called swings
A wrong doesn’t make a right call a wrong call
City rats are city rats.
That was way to Juvenile for that fan to act that way...Gotta be a better human than that. Both these teams seem to have POS fanbases
# Cora cheated two year's in a row and shouldn't even be allowed in baseball
wtf is run with fans and players?
This isn't people acting crazy. This is just the rivalry between the Yankees & Red Sox. Yankees fans are just horrible.
Verdugo is the type who cried after striking out in little league
I'd love to see your reaction. You'd be crying like a baby. You're a 🤡
@@younggun13x its a baseball not a grenade. Id be very surprised if it actually hurt. It obviously pissed him off as it should have but I can't imagine it hurt
@@tedgey4286 If you think getting hit with a baseball doesn't hurt then you've obviously never watched or played baseball much.
@@PriceRight89 you know what you're right. The amazing thing is he managed to shake off the agonizing pain he must've been in to stay in the fight. 🤣
Let me ask you, did he look hurt to you? You know like when you get plunked right in the middle of the back by an Aroldis Chapman fastball, you see a guy's shoulders scrunch up together and you know what someone looks like that's in pain, did he look like that to you or did he look pissed off like he wanted to fight?
@@younggun13x Young gun I played baseball at a very high level - not as high as the people in this video but high enough to have been hit lots of times by lots of foul tips, got hit lots of times by runners at full speed (back when taking out the catcher was legal) and got hit by plenty of pitches. I know it sucks. I never liked it and I never learned to turn my back into it. I always crashed straight to the ground if a pitch came anywhere near my head. But that drunken fool out in the left field stands is no Aroldis Chapman I promise you. Believe me when I tell you if Verdugo did get hit by the ball whatever pain it caused him was quickly overshadowed by the anger.
Baseball is a difficult game mentally. And every situation is different but I can only imagine the manner of BS those people were saying before the ball came out of the stands. And it's Yankees vs Red Sox so that talk was going on from the first inning. The fans have all the advantage there because they can say (almost) anything they want and they player essentially has to take it. You can't give them the finger you can't yell back at them about their mother since they seem to know all about yours, you can't do any of that. You have to shut them out and learn to not take it personally. Even something as serious as having a ball thrown at you. As hard as it may seem, you still can't let it get to you to where you take it personally. Have the guy kicked out for sure but you just can't let it get so far in your head you're running around like a madman. After all what's it mean to be a professional? It means when you're in your office you're above the rest of us. You have to carry yourself that way. You have to act like a professional
Diaz is a terrible umpire
Poor baseball teams. They build a new stadium and forget that rain comes from above. LOL.....No enough money to put a roof with it...LOL....
Angel Hernandez would have handled this situation correctly_______________⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️
Lol settle down the shooting and the ball are two different things but typical Americans over reacting
Game has become an "everyone look at me" moment....hence the very reason I do not watch this garbage and will never again pay to watch this carnival of a so-called "sport". Play the game crybabies and move on. What a joke.
@@ghostofmoredishesmorebitch1507 Keep paying for those $100 garbage seats, $25 beers, $50 parking...all for the limited sight due to the "safety netting". Keep paying up little man....these million dollar spoon fed "athletes" depend on you.....hook, line and sinker.
I think you're describing basketball, not baseball
That’s why the Dodgers trade him
yeah, that's why wasn't because they wanted Mookie.. read up next time.
Come ooonn , black people go through this ALL THE TIME . the fan needs to be arrested
Time for Verdugo to get the hell out of Boston. Classless......I understand he got hit but he's not bleeding. Act like a pro. Hell out.....
Diego. What's classless is the Yankees fans
@Len Donnelly I dislike the Yankees. Verdugo ' s behavior is almost like give this man a Academy Award. It's like seen a little kid behaving. Be a man. Hire the hit man and go from there. But don't let your opponents know you're hurt. Be a man.
@Len Donnelly yet pitchers can throw as hard as they can at batters and get defended by their team...
