- The intrigue surrounding the proposed construction of the Mau Mau Road cutting through the Aberdares National Park and Aberdare Forest Reserve deepens, with the standoff headed for a second round of court battle. Scientists and environmentalists have locked horns with the government over the destructive effects the road will have on the Aberdare ecosystem, arguing that the environmental cost far outweighs any economic benefits. Mary Muoki visited the region and brings us the story of this proposed construction, which threatens to be another bruising legal battle between the government and conservationists
Look at a satellite view of the country on Google Maps and take notice of how little our forest cover is.
Its literally becoming a desert.
This is the kind of protests we should be having. Not only are they right on stopping the construction of the road but are actually giving alternative routes.
What are the alternatives?
@@sparkybehrens9572 they’ve given an alternative route where it makes sense to have a road. Why build a road where 52 kilometers is habited by forests when there’s a village with a decent population around?
It would have helped to show us the proposed route versus the alternative on a map
How does it benefit people socio-economically when it goes through a national park? It should be passing through the towns and villages around the mountain range.
Let's go with the alternative
Just search for who is funding the project, then you will understand the game plan,
Catherine Wangui killed it..
I hope the environmentalists win this one. we need a balance, wish you well scientists team
The mzungus at rhino ark heard Mau Mau was coming to the Aberdares and started feeling chest pains
This is an alibi. There is already à road that has existed for years. If it's just to tarmac it following the same road it has existed for years how will there be à destruction of of environnent....there is no tangible reason...alternatively let Neema construct and underground route and no tree or river it will destroyed
Ohhh there is already a murram road ?
You can't compare a murram road and Tarmac..why does the road ha e to cut through the forest yet there's an alternative where residents reside and will be beneficial
The Murray road has served for all those years without destroying the forest. And it's upgraded to stay passable. Why they want to interfere with the forest does not make sense. The road will only be used during the daylight hours so let it stay the way it is. We need that forest. Open it up and it will be cut down within a very short time
Until people start hitting elephants and other wildlife while flying through the section. Of course, the murram road has been there, like all other park roads. For park use, not commercial purposes.
@@juniourx2203, for park purposes.
Has the Neema done something about the loging around the bigest waterfalls which is in aberdares
In america , in Brazil literally everywhere there are roads passing through forests
The hectares of forests as a percentage of total land in Brazil is soo big, Kenya shouldn't copy them
That is America NOT AFRICA..
Only that they don't put up kiosks by the forest roadside and construct flats with sewage draining into the natural aquifers in America and Brazil. Hii akili ndio mlipigia Ruto kura nayo. The guy himself wants the road to pass through.
Laughable thinking comparing those mammoth countries with expansive forest cover with our Kenya. I'll give you an example . Yellowstone National Park in the US is huuuuge . It has roads but just for park attractions. Not a major highway connecting cities. Those go around. Plus in US zoning is strict so a road does not mean buroti maguta maguta start being sold for people to construct whatever they feel like right next to the road sometimes building on road reserve. We do that hapa because of lack of accountability, enforcement and corruption.
Tell us where neema and all those conservists were when nyeri nyahururu through ndaragwa was when it was being constructed, animals are not important than human beings and this would be someone blocking the développent of Nyandarua County. Someone somewhere want this région to be ever backward. The magume ol kalou was opposed but now nobody talks....the sgr is passing through Tsavo and Nairobi Park...so 25mts tarmac road affects nothing...they can put tunnels for animals to cross from either side as they did on Meru road as you face Isiolo....if neema or those advocate of animals want to conserve these things they are saying will be destroyed let them now make a road tunnel from Ihithe to ndunyu njeru ....but let not give us reasons which dont hold any water...that road is as important as the people living on both sides
Did you just say - "animals are not important than human beings."
What makes you that superior?
@@tonnygidraph7246 what a fool 😂😂😂, go live in a forest with your fellow animals
You make no sense at all. Ddnt you hear residents ask for an alternative route that will benefit them cz its close to where they reside and farm? This one cons outway the pros. There are so many roads in Nyandarua that need serious uograde to benefit the residents and esp farmers currently
This Road should not be Constructed it's against Wildlife conservation UNESCO & UN SHOULD come in
There is already a road, just an upgrade
World wide we have roads going through parks with a balance for nature and humans. in many cases, roads are used to assist conserve the road. make the road a scenic road with tolls to maintain the environment but do deny people public infrastructure when you are living in a five-bedroom house in Nairobi or London.
I actually don't see the problem because as we speak there is an already existing and gazetted road which has been in existence for decades so I don't understand what the argument is about. I can imagine driving for 54kms through a forest it can just be a great thrill
God said he’ll destroy those who destroy nature 🌳
The great conservation lie, wacha road ipite there's an existing rough road lami sio shida
Who even comes up with this projects? How daft can you be as a leader to understand the basics of water catchment areas??
How does a road affect water catchment
Soo shame 🎉 make the best high flying road
Wacheni hii unafiki, wanyama wameachiwa ardgi mingi zaidi. Was Kenya made for animals or for man? And cease inciting the locals and against the project. Hii naneno ya invironment inekuwa religion?
Prezzo Build the road! Forget the environment cult.
Kwani barabara ya 52km itaharibu nini. Can you imagine the length of Aberdare against a proposed duo carriageway.
Watched unafiki, Ruto ita wa China wahenge barabara lakini wahenge bridges wanna make wapirue chiming kama SGR. PERIOD.
I see no problem. Actually it will be a thrill travelling for 2hrs in a forested area. Many of this roads exists elsewhere
Uko na kichwa mbaya wewe. Achana na thrill ya driving and think about what happens to that forest when the usual encroachment begins. Turning Aberdares into another Kamakis complete with high-rise buildings is not exactly thrilling.
WIyaki way lacks footbridges all along and no one is complaining, what's more important, human life or wild life? Which is less important?
Ngong Forest is separated from Nairobi National Park by a logistical hub and human settlement.
Tsavo along Mombasa Rd among many others.
Let's end hypocrisy and double standards
Environmental damage my foot....we need that road ASAP.
Western nations must be involved here
Kenya is very funny. In Europe we got highways passing through the forest and the ecosystem still exist. Its only to keep laws to protect the land from settlements. Amazon is the largest forest in the world and have a good road passing through it. Let look into the future not make decisions based on the current situation
They are being emotional. So sad
I don't think people understand the consequences of doing this ...though I'm no ecologist or environmentalist ...I know a thing or two about habitat loss and fragmentation... the consequences are multidimensional... human development especially in a 3rd world setting won't stop at just a single thoroughfare cutting through a fragile environment ... the Amazon biome is suffering now cause of such decisions in the 70s ...
Kenya's forest cover is only but a small portion, the rest being arid and semi arid land. We don't have as much green cover as Europe. I say we protect the little we have. As for regulations, Kenya is corrupt bana, again we aren't Europe.
@@africandream_ I passed through the proposed road and its allready dug and some murram in it. I dont get why they come now when its allready done
Knowing Kenyans this forest may not exist in 30 years....Half of Nairobi water comes from this place...Tragedy of the commons..sio watu wa Central wataumia tu....visit this place and you will understand...Timber Mills are salivating right now
It is not our duty to reward wangari mathai's lif'es work...
walete barabara😂 kesi baadae
I agree with conservatists
We need this Road ASAP!!!!
Hii ujinga wapeleke Europ..build the road
haita jengwa untafanya?😂
@@user-lb9ql9dq2s Hii ni Kenya bana environment bullshit ni ya Europe na USA 😂😂
Huo ujinga wapeleke uko we need road that nonsense of conservation go to hell
Reason fam!! Stop catching and communicating feelings....?!!
Nyeri county has 41% forest cover, the highest in the country, against a national average of 8%.
We have a situation where productive agricultural land has been drastically reduced by planting a lot of grevillea and bluegum trees.
Let the environmentalists preach their gospel where it is needed most and allow the economic opening up of nyandarua and Nyeri counties.
This road should be Banned completely. Why dont we care about our enviroment??
Just looking at this comment section shows why we as Kenyans are so… primitive. It’s embarrassing.
You don’t see a problem with eliminating a natural preserve that can never be again rather than look for an alternative?
No wonder we are called the dark continent. Thanks a lot, Moi.
