Use to be a member over on the "RSOG" forum. Was a great group of like minded people over there, don't know about now, life happened and I got away from checking in on a regular basis. Go check out Viking Preparedness, Pastor Joe was on there at the time I was there and he went by Joe Dan. Heads up to armchair commandos, these guys are the real deal and call out fantasy B.S. in a heart beat. Don't be afraid to ask what you need to know just keep down to Earth and practical and you will be fine. Edited to add: The cadre over there are all high speed low drag types that served in the Ranger Battalions or higher special military groups, they lived the life.
I love how you were able to find a knuckle bandage to match your shirt. That's like downtown! Brother, you cram so much great information into so little time. I can't get enough of these! I was in Boy Scouts when Moses came down from the mountain. I only made it to Tenderfoot, so all this show and tell is refreshing my memories and giving me new knowledge. But, it is now 1700 here on 10 July 23, medication time. Cheers!
Always enjoy your coverage of kits. So many others neglect to mention/demonstrate use of kit items, and you provide an abundance of info for them! Keep the vids coming!
love the kit. I have switched mainly to 275 cord. it's strong enough for most things, still has the inner strands, but I can have a lot more heavy cord when I need it , in the same space. I don't find myself needing anything as heavy as 550, But then I'm in the Northern Arizona desert,
550 is the basic military standard. Locally I haven't been able to find any. So I settled for some 150 (Ridgeline & basic tying) & 1100 (to bear the weight of a person).
Do you reckon for the last couple thousand years the Native Americans carried 100 feet of cordage around with them everywhere they went outdoors?! No. Learn to do without man-made cordage, for true bushcraft/primitive skills. This will give you the knowledge to comfortably go without cordage all together. Natural cordage is everywhere. It doesn't weigh you down or take up room on your person or in your pack. If you're set on needing a lot of cordage, learn how to make cordage from plastic bottles and other trash, not just natural materials. It's a very similar method to making leather cordage.
I use kevlar and some type of black cord that came in wazoos essential kit and I use type 1a cord for my kits the 550 is usually too big to fit I use a maxpedition fatty for my kit.
Former smoker for 12 years. I always just gave my Bic a shake and it would light just fine. I live up towards Canada, so it can get pretty cool in winter. Also for a wet lighter, you can roll the wheel on your pant leg to dry it even faster.
Great video Andrew. Each one is like a chapter in a field manual. I truely believe that if a viewer found themselves in a survival situation and retained the skills you teach, chances are high that they would make it out alive. Bravo on a job well done. Thank you and best of luck tomorrow.
Hello 👋 Andrew, sincere thanks for sharing this vital survival information. You always do an excellent job. The best to you for your good health and safety. 🤗
Great content. I thought you would of recommend calving a groove in the gaff pole so it holds it better? Zip ties can slip plus a groove around the pole would grip both zip ties and the hook if you bend the hook appropriately. I adapted the feral rod and striker by replacing the striker with a hack saw blade. It will give you a secondary method of sawing a small branch. You can lash it to a section of wood and it’s as good as a multi tool saw plus you can cut metal with it if you choose that hack saw blade. I would add to the kit a safety pin or two. (That’s what we call them in the UK) it takes up no space whatsoever. You can always fill a kit with stuff that are gap fillers like a needle and safety pins. One of my favourites is a button along with the needle n thread. Also I like to add a small magnet so that I can magnetise the sewing needle to create a compass. You just need to rub the magnet on the sewing needle and place the needle on a leaf in water and it will point to north.
The kit is interesting and of course sound in its contents. However, the REAL gold of each of your videos is the ancillary info/tips n tricks you provide over its course--approachable presentations of truly useful techniques which can be universally applied. For these, as well as your continued service, I wish to say thank you.
Major, after being sub'd to your channel for over a year now, I find it refreshing that you still feel the need to learn something. You could probably teach Mors Kochanski a thing or two. If you do eventually open your own school and have adjunct instructors, pls make sure of their background (my expertise). This was another great video Sir. There hasn't been one of yours yet that I didn't learn something new/reinforce the basic(s).
Great video as always, Andrew. This was a nice surprise on a Saturday. Think I’ll work on my long pill bottle fishing kit today. I didn’t know you were a Devo fan 😉.
Hahaha! I was hearing it in my mind just as you said it. Nice Devo reference. Another awesome video, sir, keep up the good work and best wishes on getting that instructor position. 👍
Good luck on the instructor position 👍. You are clear and easy to understand in your videos and bring ideas to the table that I don't remember hearing elsewhere.
Dude you're awesome !!! I grew up a boy scout and because of you and corporal Kelly I trying to pass along some of your techniques. I fully appreciate your videos so I can pass on this knowledge. God bless 🙏🙏
Always well executed skill presentation in clear and concise format in short time. That Esbit Cubes Emergency Stove & Fuel is an example. Thank you very much!
I was so blessed too find a craftsmans. I've switched it up with different metal and Wii cutting blades. It like a key hole saw . You insert the blade then tighten the set screw. It works for me with only one strong hand.
Andrew, we have to convert you to to Canadian Jam Knot. The equivalent bulk of #36 bankline to your zip ties would give you way more versatility and instead of roughly 30 lbs of break strength you could have close to 200 lbs. Sure it takes a little longer to tie, but the advantages are worth it.
Bics are always worth having around. After they run out, you can use your knife to shave a pile of plastic from the case onto your tinder, gently roll the flint onto the plastic without igniting it and when your flint pile is big enough, roll some spark onto it.
You're the KING of kits. The best thing for me, as far as takeaways go, is the oven bag trick with plastic drinking hose. Gonna have to try that one. I've used oven bags before but not like that.
For my rope I use heat shrink tubing instead of burning the ends. I also use it for paracord. It make it kind of like a shoestring end. Easier to thread through openings, plus can actually be used for shoestring.
You always do good work Andrew. Good luck on the course and becoming a paid teacher. It is great when you can find something that you like doing and then get paid for doing it.
Andrew, I went thru the USRSOG basic and advanced course years ago. Awesome course, great instructors. I wish you the best of becoming an instructor there. The course is a nice blend of military, modern survival, and primitive. Their manual “Six Ways In and 12 Ways Out” ranks up there with the SAS Survival Manual. I love your videos and I know you will go far as an instructor. All the best! Oh, please tell George Jasper I said hello.😊
@@VikingPreparedness Joe, is that you? I can’t tell by the small picture. Anyway, I learned so much at USRSOG about fieldcraft and survival and continued learning from other instructors. I love Andrew’s UA-cam channel. I had hoped to meet the guy when he was at Fort Leavenworth. Would’ve taken him out to dinner just to have a conversation. Anyway, stay in touch.
Watching John Hudson stash razor blades inside his cuffs and hemlines as well as mini ferro rods in his laces, inspired me to have some casually stashed survival items on my person. My hiking shoes all have water bags underneath the insert sole. Does it effect my walking? Not that I've noticed
Its awesome to see that each and every video, just keep providing an encyclopedia of knowledge in the survival world. Another super presentation. So many different subjects covered over a short period of time. Very well thought out.
TOW missile guidance wire makes a great addition for snares and other needs. Wrap it around the knife handle for one full length of the handle then cover with a bike inner tube…a road bike tube may be good on a Mora Garberg. Had an Air Force survival knife in the 80’s that I did that with. Wire is very thin and strong.
So much you can do with that Mora knife. Get some 7 in 1 para cord. You have paracord plus tinder, fishing line, snare wire, and kevlar cordage all in one. Add a mini 1/8" dia ferro rod under the paracord wrap and now you have a self contained kit on your belt.
i wish that ranger would make longer videos, i just start with the olives and bread and its over. no wine 🙃 another splendid and well made film with new information. that tube trick has set my imagination off.
You can use your multi tool plyers to gently remove the metal shroud from the Bic lighter and then drying it will be easier, then just put it back on with the plyers
Great video today Andrew!!! I bought their book, “6 ways in, 12 ways out” many years ago and found it well thought out in their methodology, and their emphasis on the tiered/layered aspect of carrying your lifesaving (survival) gear. IMO they fused primitive fieldcraft with modern aspects fieldcraft (survival) into a pretty comprehensive program. Kudos to you for using a Devo reference when working on the Mora sheath… kids just don’t know! Lolol. Good fortune on trying out at the school tomorrow! See you in the trail later! Keep up the Fire!
Yeah, that's a good book for sure. It's been a long time since I was on the forum there. Great group of people at U.S.R.S.O.G.They gave me a lot of impetus to continue refining my skills and kit. That's where I got the idea to include oven bags in my kit
I have that exact case and all the pieces. Time for me to pack it up to have a grab and go kit that’s waterproof. I was thinking of wrapping paracord through the handles and around the back for extra cordage. Excellent video sir!
I like the idea of multiple size hooks for fishing I would add some nylon line for bigger fish and a pocket knife in addition to the item you mentioned
Small kits that include single edge razor blades could be improved if you add a case cutter to hold the razor blade. I wondered if they were still made as these days, in every unboxing video, a "fancy" jack knife is always used to open packages. Well, a quick check and yes, the very simple folded metal, light weight case cutter is still available and you can purchase them in bulk 12 packs, enough for all of your kits. With one blade in the handle and perhaps two spares, I would think you have a great back-up to your pocket knife or sheath knife. Much safer than holding the blade only and less risk of injury in the field.
I hope you make a UA-cam million bucks Andrew as you always give more than full measure, and give "the rest of us" more confidence every time by showing such great life-saving tricks. By the way, amazon has that strobe light you have on your helmet - add it to your store there and I'll buy it with your link. I think you still have some covid residue hanging on. I sure hope you get all better real soon. Thanks so much for all you do.Maybe someday some of us will start telling you how what you did saved us one way or another. You really are the best.

It is refreshing to see someone attend a training session looking for knowledge, not just GIVE seminars. I like your attitude and enthusiasm and the easy way you convey information in your videos, it makes it easier for me to learn. Keep up the great videos!
love the color coordination with the bandage. Great Information. Thank You.
Whoa the mirror flash went right into a white out intro to an ad. That was a trip
Finally someone included a sharpener in their kit, most kits omit this, a survival knife is not very effective if it's dull as a log,
True Story

Great information
A writing pen sized diamond stick sharpener could free up space and cut some waite, but they tend to only come with one sort of medium grit.
I'd cut a slight groove around that pole to seat the cable ties a bit better so they don't slide...
I do the same but add a sail needle and 3” ferro rod under the cordage.
Watching John Hudson stash razor blades inside his cuffs and hemlines as well as mini ferro rods in his laces, inspired me to have some casually stashed survival items on my person. My hiking shoes all have water bags underneath the insert sole. Does it effect my walking? Not that I've noticed
