I am amazed at how funny this still is 6 years later.
You can just tell what kind of person he was by how he responded to that Japanese developer who asked him a question live.
He didn't even answer the question, to boot. Makoto Goto asked him if any more recent Japanese games (ala 2013) inspired them, and Phil Fish took that as his cue to be a dick and humiliate the man in front of a crowd.

Every game developer is gonna have someone hating "him/her" of this or that,
of course. It's either a critic, reviewer, or whatever to make their opinion or not. Phil just completely took it the wrong way. That's just how the world is.

I remember meeting this guy once just as FEZ was releasing and saying I remembered seeing this kind of mechanic in a flash game. He insisted it was stolen and rushed to market in flash based on a demonstration of his game. I explained that I thought maybe he had something to do with it, which is why I asked. He insisted that the idea was stolen and he had it first. I said I only asked because I wanted to know if he had anything to do with the flash game. He said that the idea was stolen. I left.
I seriously laughed out loud when I heard this news, he was being a pretentious prick all the time, throwing offensive comments at a gaming culture that spawned and popularized the genre that made his game so succesful, and ALL OF A SUDDEN he gets mad when someone calls him out for it and decides to outright cancel his game. What a spineless, cowardly and hypocritical attitude.
Now he's gone, I guess you could say....... *sunglasses on, Gomez style*

It really was. Without provocation the guy just insults an entire country's industry. It's those kind of filterless statements that make people cringe at his personality. He did apologize later on, but an empty gesture. When you speak something from the heart, that's what you really feel. A then carefully crafted thought over apology is purely for PR reasons.

The production on this is amazing.
I've recently developed some very mixed feelings about Phil Fish as a person. When I saw Indie Game: The Movie for the first time I didn't know anything about Phil. I had never heard of him before (I had heard of the game as I had previously seen Mike Matei's review of it) so when I saw his appearance in the film he came across as a genuinely nice guy. A bit aggravated perhaps, but that was to be expected considering how much stress he had been through during development of FEZ. However, the man in the film seems to be very different to the man in real life. I'm sure he's not a truly bad guy, but he has a seriously bad habit of not thinking before he opens his mouth. I feel like he takes criticism far too seriously and the way he goes about responding to such comments is constantly making me respect him less and less. Trust me, I feel really bad for saying that. :/
He is a narcissist. They can be very convincing, charismatic. But they are ultimately very nasty and toxic.

I honestly think he IS a "pretentious jackass". I did not watch that documentary he was in, but based on how he acts online he shows almost no amount of humbleness. That would be fine, as I can respect overconfidence to a certain extemt, but he gives off this "I'm better than you" attitude. That is what I hate about Fish. I do not care whether or not he made a successful game, it does not make him better than anyone else.

I think everybody is WAY too quick to get on the hate and judgement wagon when it comes to Phil Fish. I think he is just SO passionate about what he does that he has too much swirling around in his head. Didn't he dedicate like 5 years of his life to making FEZ? He lived and breathed it, only for people who play it for a couple of days to tear him down as a person. I agree he comes across as a bit of an ass at times.... but SO?? He is defending his baby that he invested so much into. Clearly that comes with his brilliance, and if he was a different person we wouldn't have FEZ. Think we are all being WAY too sensitive here.
