    Unfortunately, I watched a loader feeding rounds to the coax like this get his arm crushed when the driver slammed the tank into reverse at the top of the position, jumping the stabilized gun up into the turret roof. I used to do it myself when I was a loader, until I just cut the belt at about 150-200 rounds keeping the weight of the belt down. We would set up AN/PRC-77 jump radios in M1A2s back in the early 90s at Yakima training range in WA. The tower would eval the crew on performance and communications on the range in stationary fight positions and team movements while traversing down range. The M1A2 didn't live fire back in Fort Lewis and you can only do so much in a simulator.

      Before I fire, I have to give a target description and a range, but the manual never says the range has to be accurate. However, notice how the tank commander doesn't tell the driver to move up from behind the berm until I give a range. The gunner can keep refining a range if their laze is bad while the tank is moving, but waiting to read off the actual range takes precious seconds away from the rest of the crew.

      Once again, you're assuming it was due to gender rather than inexperience, even after I stated that inexperience was involved. Instances exist where females aren't assertive enough to command troops in battle, for sure. That's just a fact. But that doesn't excuse your automatic assumption that "lack of control = female" in this instance. Soldiers must be evaluated purely on their ability to complete a task. She didn't do great in this video. However, go ahead and show me a male soldier who can do better with 2 weeks of experience, and we'll talk about how your example is still an edge case and your argument is still discriminatory for no reason.

    • @dreadnaught_37_kilo
      @dreadnaught_37_kilo  2 роки тому +3

      So the "jump" refers to the "jump cable", which takes the sound from the internal communications net and transmits it over the radio so that the evaluators can hear what we're saying. Obviously, we don't want to clutter up the net when we don't have to, so we only turn it on immediately before an engagement. "Driver down" simply instructs the driver to back down into a covered position, and "Lost" means that we shot at the target, but can't necessarily see if we hit it or not.

    • @NZobservatory
      @NZobservatory 6 місяців тому

      The principal difference between the M1A1 and the A2 variants is the electronics. The protection remains the same, except in the the A2 SEPv3 variant, which has additional front turret armor. Re the ammo fire risk, there is a 1"-thick (25.4mm) armored steel door between the ammo and the fighting compartment. The turret roof blow out panels will operate long before the armored door would ever be breached, directing the combustion up and out of the turret and away from the crew.

    • @dreadnaught_37_kilo
      @dreadnaught_37_kilo  3 роки тому +6

      Hypothetically we could, but tank engagements are generally conducted from such long range and over such short periods of time that "front towards enemy" is the best rule of thumb. Additionally, "angled for maximum survivability" towards one enemy tank tends to translate to "perfect flank shot" to his wingman. Hiding behind terrain between shots, and seeking alternate firing positions to keep the enemy guessing as to our position is the best option.

      1. Your loader; though I defended him earlier, should be quicker. Not every shot you sling will be a hit- or even a kill. I know that you hit it, and the 2nd target was a coax target, but he can work it a bit faster.
      2. Coax maintenance. You should have known you had an issue from your LFAST day. You know how to build the platform in the coax box? Get that solenoid adjusted, that should have been a prefire check.
      3. Good job using your tactical break time to fix your coax. Most crews just hang out and flap in the wind. But...
      4. WTF?!? Don't ever let your loader work on the gun like that with the cadillacs engaged! Especially when moving up! One hard stop, one slip, and your loader is between the breechring and turret roof, and guaranteed to pass his next Ht/Wt. You got to have him work on it, fine; let go the handles, and make sure he's clear before you pull up.
      5. Yep, there's a trigger on the coax. Good job finding it.
      6. Coax zero can be tighter.
      Lastly....TC. Your gunner does not run your tank. You are the tank COMMANDER, not the tank rider. You should be doing more to scan, to prep your crew, to LEAD the engagement. You have a good gunner, but he's carrying you. You need to work the crew duties, chair drills and get comfortable doing that job. You're the brains of that crew, you need to step up and act like it.

In my opinion, a manual loader is far superior to an autoloader, but we're getting to the point technologically where that might not continue to be true. Yes, he looks like himself, poor guy, he died with a shot in the eye, but I felt more sorry for the fat.

    What's the massive blue tip at the top? Is that the "armor piercing" bit of the round?

      The blue bits are "sabot petals" that hold the round centered in the gun. that round is only about 30mm in diameter, so those lock onto it in the tube and contain the gases to propel the round out the muzzle, then fall away. The blue color indicates it's a training round.
