The Longbox era for the PSX reminds me of the Black box NES era, where the games were definitely different from the subsequent and better design and more popular games. It was an era of innovation, just like you said in this really informative video.
@They're trying to weaponize it The Playstation released in September of 1995, and I remember renting the longbox of Resident Evil, which came out in March of 1996, so that's 6 months there, and possibly there were games that came out later than Resident Evil, so it was more than a couple months of longboxes.
I really like that you have IRL camera footage to show off these boxes. I think it adds a level of quality to the video. You could have just as easily taken some stock photos and called it a day, but I appreciate this. And also makes it more unique, not something somebody can just replicate, they have to do their own version of it.
I'm glad they eventually settled on jewel cases that are standardized, and easily replaceable. You can remove all the box art out of a jewel case and put in a brand new one, which really spruces up any PS games you have in your collection. You can't do that with cardboard boxes!
Great for you over in the US of A. Here in the UK we had horrible non-standard plastic cases that are about 1.5x thicker than a regular jewel case, with their own bespoke tray. Also incredibly brittle and hard to find one now that's not cracked. Ostensibly these thick cases were designed to accommodate a multi-lingual instruction manual (here in PAL it's common to see manuals in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish all in one. Sometimes you'll also have the Scandinavian languages too.) So you get these big thick manuals that just won't fit in a normal jewel case. I'd rather have long boxes 😂

Demo discs my man, Sony made so many Demo discs for the PS1, they all started with "PlayStation Picks". The pizza hut ps1 demo discs are infamous themselves.
I'm still haunted by the memory of Renting Dr. Mario for Super Nintendo. Only to find out it was some Tetris nonsense. A horrible mistake. Little kids just don't read I guess lol
@They're trying to weaponize it the first console I played was a sega genesis when I was around 4-5 but only dabbled with 3 or 4 games. PS1 and N64 were the consoles I played in depth for the first time and actually beat games
@They're trying to weaponize it Probably meant like the first ones that were new to them and not hand-me-downs. For instance, I was born in the early 90s and grew up with my older brother's NES, but my first "true console" that was new to me and was actually "mine" was the N64.
I always assumed it was a carryover from the cassette tape days. They used to put cassette tapes into long plastic shells to make them harder to shoplift. The shells were removed at checkout and re-used. The longbox size was about the same as a cassette in the plastic shell. This meant they fit in the same store shelving that was adopted for the cassette tapes. They did it with CD's as well but once electronic tags were introduced, they moved away from the plastic shells.
I think part of the reason for those long boxes (music CDs did the same thing for a while) was a theft deterrent. At some point, retailers started using sensors they would stick on the smaller cases that would set off those alarms at the store's exit.

I'm a HUGE fan of the original PlayStation-- and especially this early period of the platform's lifespan. In going back and rebuilding/strengthening my library of "OG" PlayStation games, I've tried to secure as many longbox versions as I can, as I feel that it's more representative of the era as I experienced it. My old man eyes appreciate the larger instruction manuals, too. I really enjoyed your narration, research, and candor. The video was a lot of fun to watch, and I'll be looking to spend some time catching up on your other work. Many thanks for the effort.
14:52 to go along with that, according to VGFacts the Sega Saturn game Astal didn’t have it’s name on the spine; this meant they had to be displayed front-facing, taking up more space which is speculated to be the reason the game sold poorly
Even though I loved my dog to death, it really pained me when he chewed up my original long box for King's Field. I still have the booklet and the tip card that came in it, but that was all I could salvage. Great video, a period of my childhood I'll never forget
The cool packaging is what made me buy games as a kid . I remember buying Turok 2 and resident evil 2 , and honestly the box art is what caught my interest to play them and started my obsession with gore and stuff ! I loved the early 2000s and late nineties when I was a kid .
I love the longbox games. I still have my copy of the launch ps1 demo disc. Those longbox games on ps1 really did feel like the wild west with new ip's. Last time i went to a convention in 2013 i bought a still sealed copy of battle arena toshinden and i opened it (wasnt that much) and the sponge inside brought me back to 95.
Only OG PS1 fans remember the long boxes because they were the few people who were able to purchase year 1. Most people waited until the price dropped the following Christmas before they finally got one. Those first wave of games popped up with the green "classics" tag, in the jewel cases.
I remember buying my PS1 when I was in high school. I had briefly read about it in a magazine. There was a write-up about Destruction Derby. And from what I saw in the photos of the shrapnel and carnage I just had to get one. My home stereo was a Sony. The CD player in my car was a Sony. So I thought I'd take a chance. By the time I actually bought one it had been out for awhile. But I remember going into Target and picking one out and grabbing Destruction Derby. The guy working in the electronics department showed me another game I had never heard of. He said it's been selling like crazy. That game was Resident Evil. So I decided to grab it as well. Both games were long boxes. I was blown away. I started playing it and the next thing I knew the sun had come up and I played it all night. Up until this time I was an SNES gamer. I started out on the NES when I was 5. But by the time I was in high school video games weren't really something I did much anymore. The SNES was somewhat dated by then. I loved my SNES. It's still my favorite console ever. But the PS1 is what brought me back into gaming again. It seemed like it was a console for adults. And here I am 25 years later at age 41 and I'm still playing games. I never stopped. I went from the PS1 to playing on every console ever up until the XBox Series X and PS5 and I switched to PC. The PS1 will forever hold a special place in my heart because it got me back into gaming as an adult.
I had a really nice condition copy of Resident Evil (longbox) when I was younger, but one day I gave it to my best friend because he was really depressed, because I wanted to cheer him up. He still has it, too.
It's funny because thinking about this era reminded me of just how wonderfully strange and odd that it was I fell into the friend group that I did for the time period that I did. I always noticed they were better at games than me. I am the same way at chess I love playing these games. And I get my share of wins but it was obvious to me that the people I would play with or just on a level I could not attain at the time. It would bother me but it wouldn't bother me enough to not hang out because that's what I wanted to do I just enjoyed spending time with them and I enjoyed doing what we did I really felt a part of that friend group. They understood computers in a way I could not understand at the time too I thought of them as hyper nerds whereas I was just a nerd. Loved them guys you know I look back on that and I recognize that even at the time I realized I was privileged to be a part of that. I realize it today as well but it's nice to remember that I realized it then too.
I remember alot of these games from my childhood!!! I was born in 91 but i was playing games by 5 yrs old because my mom was a crazy good gamer. This to me was an epic Era of gaming! Back when games were different and people would try new ideas
right! started with snes for me and sega genesis. i still remember playing games like syphon filter, tomb raider, jersey devil, earth worm jim and vigilante 8 with my mother among other things.
There was a lot of crazy change in that era. I was born in 86 and similarly was gaming very early on. Within 4 years we went from super Mario world to Resident Evil. The advancement in technology and graphics was literally shocking at the time. I’ll always remember how much the ps1 blew my mind the first time we fired it up, it was like something from a highly advanced civilization from a different planet. Kids today wouldn’t quite get it because the difference between say the ps3 and the ps4 and ps5 isn’t quite as much of a stretch
@@sethallison5682 Exactly, there isn't a super crazy difference between modern consoles as far as graphics go. There are some 360 games that still hold up incredibly well against Series X games. But back then you went from 2D to 3D into even better 3D and you really noticed that difference. And developers tried new things back then. I'd say the golden age of gaming was from the 90s into the early 2000s. Now a days every game is a remake, or another in whatever trend is going on at the time like the 600 different Battle Royale games that launched since 2017. It's rare to find something new and unique, and developers don't want to take those risks. They just want big bucks fast.
This erra of gaming is really special to me and my friends. I remember my best friend bought a psx and I didnt even know that it existed at the time. Alot of late summer nights playing twisted metal, espn extreme games, WWF smackdown, soul edge, tomb raider. Eventually we moved on to PC games, I remember diablo was a big one and then when everquest came out in 99 that and counterstrike is where we spent most of our time for many years.
I never saw a long box in Europe. There the Boxes were similar in height and width to a CD jewel cases, but the depth of the box was more like of two CD cases together for one disc games. This space was used for the manuals mostly. Cases with more than one dis were even bigger, but more comparable to a four disc CD case
I remember these!!! Still see them in retro game stores today obviously, but my cousins had PS1's and these cases were what I remember first with the console. Wasn't till later I saw they came in regular CD cases as well.
I remember I bought a playstation the summer of 96' with rock picking money - battle arena toshinden in the sega cd case was the only playstation game they had at walmart for quite a while, and I ended up grabbing that one and resident evil and discworld in larger towns. the boxes made you feel like you had something different than the usual SNES and genesis games they had down at the rental shop (who begrudingly started carrying playstation games in late 97 after the n64 wasn't quite the juggernaut they thought it was). for a while in the dinky little midwest town i lived in, i was the only one with a playstation in my grade and it felt like i was on the bleeding edge of the future.
In the UK, we had cases that resembled standard CD jewel cases, but were about twice as thick. This was pretty good in that it meant there was plenty of room for a decent manual, plus the thicker spine made them easier to read on the shelf. The down side is that they are much more difficult to replace for collectors nowadays, whereas replacement standard jewel cases are pretty easy to find. Also, the thicker manuals permitted by the design usually just turned out to be a regular-sized manual, just in several different languages. Actually, maybe the ability to hold multi-language manuals was the reason the European cases were thicker in the first place...
WH40k Blood Angels is still one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played, really loved it. Funny to see a relatively overlooked game end up being such a big deal for an oddball reason.
Fantastic video. I've always had a soft spot for longboxes and I collect them as such. I remember when I was a kid an uncle of mine had Krazy Ivan and Warhawk in the longboxes and I was surprised it was a Playstation game because I had only seen the jewel cases up to that point. It was an interesting (albeit short) era.
Awesome video. I remember seeing the boxes in stores and it game me this feeling of excitement. Even looking at the boxes now, it still brings that weird feeling because the cover arts are so cool.
I haven't forgotten it, it was some of the most wonderous times in gaming. That first bootup of the system, those first experiences with polygonal graphics at home with games like Twisted Metal, Destruction Derby, Toshinden, Tekken, Air COmbat, Warhawk, Need for Speed, Descent, etc.
Some early promo material had Die Hard Trilogy in a long box, but ended up a jewel case game. Another thing to note about Gunship and I think International Track and Field is that they have the "content rated by ESRB" blurb on the front.
As a big game collector, finding a long box in good condition is increasingly rare. For that reason I snag any decently priced long box games I come across, having the original Need for Speed or Tekken in long box feels like owning video game history
1996 was an odd year for the PS1. The system itself was still looking for its identity and we had so much variety in games. I vividly remember borrowing Warhawk and Crazy Ivan from a video rental. Both were very unique and were one of their kind for its time.
I remember those long boxes being made of the most shatter prone plastic known to man. Those hinges would break if you put the game down slightly too hard. I'm sure the original ones from the 90s could be classified as explosive devices at this point with how dried out the plastic must be after 30 years.

I remember it well actually. I was a teenager during that era. Doom, NBA Jam: T.E., and Warhawk, had those three in longbox. The doom was cardboard. But like you talk about, when they switched to the small music cd style jewel cases, alot of games that were in longbox were also seen in small jewel cases. like Warhawk
I was really lucky and I won a PlayStation 1 in 1995 from a Pepsi promotion at my local store. I remember the first day going to the video store to rent some games, with all the long box games on the shelves and we rented and ended up buying Warhawk. I also remember playing the PlayStation demo CD like a million times. I miss those days.
I don't think anybody really forgot about this era if they were around back then, but I do appreciate all the research and cross verification that you did. I do agree that a lot of people just copy other sources and assume that it's correct without trying to dig deeper though. The long boxes I have are Return Fire (which is on the rarer more expensive side) with the ridges and then NFL GameDay which is just cardboard. Now that I Iook at the Return Fire box the glue on the front cover like dried so it's peeling off, damn. It looked near mint before even has the foam inside haha Well that's a bit disappointing but it just sits on my shelf anyway.
Same. That, and the SingleTrac intro. In high school, my buddy and I each bought a PS1 with our work money. He had the original Twisted Metal, and I had Warhawk.
I think marketing tactics changed and I think why they switched to Joel cases from large cases wasn't just a one-sided issue it was multifaceted economically it probably made sense but I think that marketing studies had shown that kids were growing up and getting their own source of income and it was better to have a visual image of something that was more common then something that was more valuable thus encouraging them to buy more to make it more impressive. This is a really interesting video thank you so much for putting it up I was transitioning from playing video games to becoming more socially involved with my peers this was in high school for me and I wasn't doing much socializing when the PlayStation first came out it was the Pinnacle of video gaming for me it and the Nintendo 64. By the time the jewel cases started coming out I was already hanging out more than playing video games. Thanks for taking me back

Great video! This is my favorite era of Playstation the 1995-1996 era. They were still trying things out and there was some cool games that would never get made today. My favorite was the long cardboard box, they lasted the longest. The Saturn type ones are always broken or cracked and the ribbed spine ones have the problem where the label glue dries out and comes loose.
I had a few longbox games: Novastorm, Kings Field, Twisted Metal, Wipeout, Loaded, and Battle Arena Toshinden 2. Novastorm alone has survived all the moving around since then. The rest were put into regular jewel cases. Ahh...good times.
The nostalgia is hard for the PS1 long box. I bought my PS1 near launch, so my first few months were full of long box rentals and a handful of owned games. I'd love a long box collection, at least of some of the better titles, but the cases were horribly constructed and every variant had weaknesses: The giant jewel box was brittle and deep scratches would appear on your game over-night. The ribbed box's hinges cracked you were out of luck, because as you said, there are no replacements. Ironically, the cardboard box was the most durable, with mangled corners, or peeling front being the biggest concerns. It's funny that while Sega launched the sixth generation with standard CD jewel cases, when Sony and later Nintendo, entered the sixth generation, they'd essentially use the larger DVD style case, a trend that has essentially continued since.
As a European, I knew neither of these two boxes or cases for PS1 games. Over here all PS1 games had this special kind of jewelcase that was as thick as the longbox but otherwise had similar dimensions to regular CD jewelcases, but not quite. And because they were so specialized it’s sometimes pretty hard to come by replacements.
I remember those cases! I grew up in the US, but I remember early Japanese games also used those same cases. I loved their more compact, WAY more durable design. I wish we had those cases at launch instead of the cardboard ones. It will always remind me of playing Hermie Hopperhead!! Even the PAL territories knew not to mess with good JP design (just like the Super Famicom console for example...)
Wow, I didn't even know there was a Space Hulk game, let alone any Warhammer 40k games out on PS1. And my theory for the Long Box editions was that there are 2 reasons for a long box existing for it. 1st reason like you stated was that they were sent to retailers to advertise. My second reasoning is that they were review copies intended to be sent to game magazine reviewers to play and write about.
You made a great point about the experimental design of game. I think thats why it felt so exciting. Feels like unless its an indie game we know how most games will play.
I was gonna start a longbox collection but only got the first Resident Evil. Then it just turned in getting the japanese imports of the first 3 Resident Evils and that ended up being a center piece of my displayed games. I still wanna get a few other long boxes to put with their import versions. It makes for a unique display. Also we really missed out by using standard jewel cases after the switch from long boxes. Those japanese cases I got are absolutely amazing.
I remember the first availability of the PSX in Australia (at $699 AUD) but no longboxes.. Was jewel cases from the start. I remember dropping my playstation at one point and cracking the Hardcore 4x4 disc in it, and gluing it back together. It still worked except for the game music haha.
I love early PS1 games, their style is so different to the later ones. Here in PAL land we had some case variants but mostly they were uniform. I remember the earliest games being on regular double cd cases.
My brother & I shared a Genesis/Sega CD & SNES, but my first console I bought on my own was the PS1. I loved the long boxes,especially the Doom long case which had different artwork. I had a decent PS1 collection of long box games. I did prefer the cardboard overall.
I'm only 1:24 in but I HOPE you cover the different long boxes. There were all cardboard type ones. There were plastic ones that had the black sides (like jewel cases it like the Saturn boxes were) then there were the cardboard with the plastic lifts on the side instead of having the ridges look just printed on there
I got the Playstation for Christmas after it came out and I've had long box versions for many of PS1 games. Doom, Mortal Kombat 3, Tekken, Resident Evil, PO'ed, Battle Arena Toshinden, Alien Trilogy, D and Zoop.
I was 15 and the ps1 was must have for me, I was always dropping coins in the arcades so having a home console was amazing. I got MK trilogy, loved it, never went back to the arcades after getting it. I had to work all summer school holidays picking fruit to buy it. I will never forget the first time playing the original Resident Evil, or Tomb Raider and MGS.
Pc game boxes were partially so big because pc devopment started mostly with homebrew so many of the software boxes needed to fit standard printer paper. Some of the early releases on c64 came in gallon size zip lock bags. Then the IBM pc came out for bussiness with boxes designed to fit in with binders. Because it was only for business.
Im 31 so I was a little too old to have my own games but I remember my brother having those ps1 long boxes. By the time I became cognizant all the games were already jewel cases.
At the time I was playing these long box PlayStation games I was also playing a lot of doom doom 2 and eventually quake over lan Network I lived in a small town and had a friend of a friend of a friend who knew a guy who had access to an office building on the weekends and we would all sneak in and hang out. All we did was drink soda eat chips shoot the s*** and play games. We also were into designing wads ourselves so we did a lot of that kind of stuff. I met a guy who knew a guy who knew somebody who had a pirate radio station in town and was operating it someone that was near my age. This was when internet access was really for showing up. I remember all the time spent in computer club or in the library before school at lunch and after school. It was a golden era of communication
I always wondered what the ridges on Playstation games jewel cases were supposed to be, until I found a long box with the actual ridges and finally understood what they were supposed to be it was a very interesting design choice, but when you hold in your hand, you realize how flimsy they could be, I've replaced many jewel cases and the games look like near mint but once those long boxes end up falling apart there is no turning back.

I've got around 20 PS1 longboxes here. I didn't get a PS1 until Christmas '96 or so, so I had no idea these even existed until I learned almost seven or eight years ago that my favorite game as a kid, Tekken, originally shipped in one. As you say, they're neat for the historical aspect as to how Sony originally wanted to market their games as premium products, and maybe I did get fooled too, because I do think they look rather nice on the shelf!
Hey now, Battle Arena Toshinden wasn't all that bad. While certainly not able to last like other series such as Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, the series still had solid enough mechanics, and was one of the first fighting game franchises to feature weapon-based combat as opposed to the usual barehanded combat of other series. It also had some amazing music. That aside, I do remember some friends of my brothers having games with the longbox cases, in particular the original King's Field (and yes, I know it's actually the second game in that series).
If Battle Arena Toshinden was that bad of a game. i don't think they make a sequel or the third or fourth ;) When talking about weapon based fighters PS1 had some of the bedst like Soulblade and Bushido Blade
About 3-4 years ago I walked into a local GameStop that had a small retro section of games where they used to keep GBA/DS games at the counter under glass. I saw a 10/10 long box copy of Road Rash for $15. It was a cardboard long box with zero damage, the foam and warranty card were included as if it was unwrapped and never touched. I was ranting off to the GA that this was a needle in a haystack especially considering how well GameStop's used software conditions usually are (getting a case in decent condition is a long shot in the first place). Unfortunately they don't have any retro games anymore. There was a location near me that had both Tomba 1 and 2 (loose copies unfortunately), but I really wish GS would bring back some retro games in store.
I think most people don't remember these packages because at the time there were far too many platforms on the market. I remember going into games stores in 94-95, and there was Genesis, 3D0, CD-I, Sega CD, 32X, SNES, Neo-Geo, Jaguar and Jaguar CD, Saturn, Virtual Boy, PS1, Game Boy, Game Gear, and the Lynx. That's not even a comprehensive list! There were a lot of rare consoles that didn't sell everywhere, like the Pippin, the C64GS, and the Radio Shack ViS. Of course, being a PC gamer, they were usually relegated to a tiny section in the back of the store.

When I first encountered the PS2 first tangible title wave I had not yet known what the standard DVD case looked like. Me being a huge PS1 fan from start to end you can imagine what I thought about the cases. 🤨🤔
Even though we had a PS1 early on I didn't see a longbox game until well after the PS2 came out. They were elusive that's for sure, and all of the better titles came out as greatest hits later on
Got my ps1 right as these were being phased out. My only game in a black box was Battle Arena Toshidan was never played due to it not fitting in my travel cd case holder thing. I remember wondering why it was fatter than the case for Jet Moto 2. Answer was so it can look nice on a collector's shelf in 25 years
an old ps1 demo disc had a game demo of 1st person in a battle car driving on a road thru underpass tunnels blowing stuff up and at one point a helicopter flys down in front of you, shooting at you, i havent been able to find this anywhere ive looked, anybody else remember this demo?

Still have my copy of X-Com in its giant ass long box jewel case. Great game, a good example of a non 3-D game from this era. Was a port of a PC game though, so it is a bit different. We had some sports game in a long box too but that was it. I remember seeing Loaded and Doom everywhere for sale in long boxes when the ps1 first came out but the cd cases seemed to replace everything immediately.

I owned a lot of Longbox games because I had the psone as a kid very early after release. It was a game changing console for us. I do remember owning Resident Evil 1 in longbox form because I wanted to play it on day one. Sadly I don’t own many of them anymore because they were so large and not worth much back then. I had a small jewel case version of space hulk but never saw a long box version. I still have my long box xcom and espn extreme games tho
The black boxes with the ridges on the edge were the best but the clear ones were so brittle they broke so easily. We had ridge racer ,air combat, im not sure which others perhaps wipe out
The 3DO and Sega CD are other examples consoles with varying package size and design. I think most don't remember this era because despite PS1 later becoming huge, in the early days it was a wild card. People were leery of all the new console hardware coming out in the 90s, the system was no more a sure bet than the 3DO, so it took a few years to gain the reputation it's now known for today. That, and a hefty price drop a year after coming out.

Dude those Black Box NES games are so nostalgic man. Minimalistic yet sleek looking. Nintendo Arcade cabinets from the same era were nice looking too.
@They're trying to weaponize it The Playstation released in September of 1995, and I remember renting the longbox of Resident Evil, which came out in March of 1996, so that's 6 months there, and possibly there were games that came out later than Resident Evil, so it was more than a couple months of longboxes.
I really like that you have IRL camera footage to show off these boxes. I think it adds a level of quality to the video. You could have just as easily taken some stock photos and called it a day, but I appreciate this. And also makes it more unique, not something somebody can just replicate, they have to do their own version of it.

I'm glad they eventually settled on jewel cases that are standardized, and easily replaceable. You can remove all the box art out of a jewel case and put in a brand new one, which really spruces up any PS games you have in your collection. You can't do that with cardboard boxes!

Great for you over in the US of A. Here in the UK we had horrible non-standard plastic cases that are about 1.5x thicker than a regular jewel case, with their own bespoke tray. Also incredibly brittle and hard to find one now that's not cracked. Ostensibly these thick cases were designed to accommodate a multi-lingual instruction manual (here in PAL it's common to see manuals in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish all in one. Sometimes you'll also have the Scandinavian languages too.) So you get these big thick manuals that just won't fit in a normal jewel case. I'd rather have long boxes 😂

Demo discs my man, Sony made so many Demo discs for the PS1, they all started with "PlayStation Picks". The pizza hut ps1 demo discs are infamous themselves.

@They're trying to weaponize it Probably meant like the first ones that were new to them and not hand-me-downs. For instance, I was born in the early 90s and grew up with my older brother's NES, but my first "true console" that was new to me and was actually "mine" was the N64.
I always assumed it was a carryover from the cassette tape days. They used to put cassette tapes into long plastic shells to make them harder to shoplift. The shells were removed at checkout and re-used. The longbox size was about the same as a cassette in the plastic shell. This meant they fit in the same store shelving that was adopted for the cassette tapes. They did it with CD's as well but once electronic tags were introduced, they moved away from the plastic shells.

I think part of the reason for those long boxes (music CDs did the same thing for a while) was a theft deterrent. At some point, retailers started using sensors they would stick on the smaller cases that would set off those alarms at the store's exit.

I'm a HUGE fan of the original PlayStation-- and especially this early period of the platform's lifespan. In going back and rebuilding/strengthening my library of "OG" PlayStation games, I've tried to secure as many longbox versions as I can, as I feel that it's more representative of the era as I experienced it. My old man eyes appreciate the larger instruction manuals, too.

14:52 to go along with that, according to VGFacts the Sega Saturn game Astal didn’t have it’s name on the spine; this meant they had to be displayed front-facing, taking up more space which is speculated to be the reason the game sold poorly
Even though I loved my dog to death, it really pained me when he chewed up my original long box for King's Field. I still have the booklet and the tip card that came in it, but that was all I could salvage. Great video, a period of my childhood I'll never forget

I started collecting long boxes about a year ago. I hate their inconsistency, but I must have them.
The cool packaging is what made me buy games as a kid . I remember buying Turok 2 and resident evil 2 , and honestly the box art is what caught my interest to play them and started my obsession with gore and stuff ! I loved the early 2000s and late nineties when I was a kid .
I love the longbox games. I still have my copy of the launch ps1 demo disc. Those longbox games on ps1 really did feel like the wild west with new ip's. Last time i went to a convention in 2013 i bought a still sealed copy of battle arena toshinden and i opened it (wasnt that much) and the sponge inside brought me back to 95.
Only OG PS1 fans remember the long boxes because they were the few people who were able to purchase year 1. Most people waited until the price dropped the following Christmas before they finally got one. Those first wave of games popped up with the green "classics" tag, in the jewel cases.
I remember buying my PS1 when I was in high school. I had briefly read about it in a magazine. There was a write-up about Destruction Derby. And from what I saw in the photos of the shrapnel and carnage I just had to get one. My home stereo was a Sony. The CD player in my car was a Sony. So I thought I'd take a chance. By the time I actually bought one it had been out for awhile. But I remember going into Target and picking one out and grabbing Destruction Derby. The guy working in the electronics department showed me another game I had never heard of. He said it's been selling like crazy. That game was Resident Evil. So I decided to grab it as well. Both games were long boxes. I was blown away. I started playing it and the next thing I knew the sun had come up and I played it all night. Up until this time I was an SNES gamer. I started out on the NES when I was 5. But by the time I was in high school video games weren't really something I did much anymore. The SNES was somewhat dated by then. I loved my SNES. It's still my favorite console ever. But the PS1 is what brought me back into gaming again. It seemed like it was a console for adults. And here I am 25 years later at age 41 and I'm still playing games. I never stopped. I went from the PS1 to playing on every console ever up until the XBox Series X and PS5 and I switched to PC. The PS1 will forever hold a special place in my heart because it got me back into gaming as an adult.
I had a really nice condition copy of Resident Evil (longbox) when I was younger, but one day I gave it to my best friend because he was really depressed, because I wanted to cheer him up. He still has it, too.

I had a full month obsession with early ps1 games and then this comes out! Good to know I wasn't the only one to have that obsession.
It's funny because thinking about this era reminded me of just how wonderfully strange and odd that it was I fell into the friend group that I did for the time period that I did. I always noticed they were better at games than me. I am the same way at chess I love playing these games. And I get my share of wins but it was obvious to me that the people I would play with or just on a level I could not attain at the time. It would bother me but it wouldn't bother me enough to not hang out because that's what I wanted to do I just enjoyed spending time with them and I enjoyed doing what we did I really felt a part of that friend group. They understood computers in a way I could not understand at the time too I thought of them as hyper nerds whereas I was just a nerd. Loved them guys you know I look back on that and I recognize that even at the time I realized I was privileged to be a part of that. I realize it today as well but it's nice to remember that I realized it then too.
I remember alot of these games from my childhood!!! I was born in 91 but i was playing games by 5 yrs old because my mom was a crazy good gamer. This to me was an epic Era of gaming! Back when games were different and people would try new ideas
right! started with snes for me and sega genesis. i still remember playing games like syphon filter, tomb raider, jersey devil, earth worm jim and vigilante 8 with my mother among other things.
There was a lot of crazy change in that era. I was born in 86 and similarly was gaming very early on. Within 4 years we went from super Mario world to Resident Evil. The advancement in technology and graphics was literally shocking at the time. I’ll always remember how much the ps1 blew my mind the first time we fired it up, it was like something from a highly advanced civilization from a different planet. Kids today wouldn’t quite get it because the difference between say the ps3 and the ps4 and ps5 isn’t quite as much of a stretch
@@sethallison5682 Exactly, there isn't a super crazy difference between modern consoles as far as graphics go. There are some 360 games that still hold up incredibly well against Series X games. But back then you went from 2D to 3D into even better 3D and you really noticed that difference.
And developers tried new things back then. I'd say the golden age of gaming was from the 90s into the early 2000s. Now a days every game is a remake, or another in whatever trend is going on at the time like the 600 different Battle Royale games that launched since 2017. It's rare to find something new and unique, and developers don't want to take those risks. They just want big bucks fast.

This erra of gaming is really special to me and my friends. I remember my best friend bought a psx and I didnt even know that it existed at the time. Alot of late summer nights playing twisted metal, espn extreme games, WWF smackdown, soul edge, tomb raider. Eventually we moved on to PC games, I remember diablo was a big one and then when everquest came out in 99 that and counterstrike is where we spent most of our time for many years.
I never saw a long box in Europe. There the Boxes were similar in height and width to a CD jewel cases, but the depth of the box was more like of two CD cases together for one disc games. This space was used for the manuals mostly. Cases with more than one dis were even bigger, but more comparable to a four disc CD case
I remember these!!! Still see them in retro game stores today obviously, but my cousins had PS1's and these cases were what I remember first with the console. Wasn't till later I saw they came in regular CD cases as well.

I remember I bought a playstation the summer of 96' with rock picking money - battle arena toshinden in the sega cd case was the only playstation game they had at walmart for quite a while, and I ended up grabbing that one and resident evil and discworld in larger towns. the boxes made you feel like you had something different than the usual SNES and genesis games they had down at the rental shop (who begrudingly started carrying playstation games in late 97 after the n64 wasn't quite the juggernaut they thought it was). for a while in the dinky little midwest town i lived in, i was the only one with a playstation in my grade and it felt like i was on the bleeding edge of the future.
My 4 original long boxes I got on Christmas 96' are still the most memorable I cherish out of my collection.
In the UK, we had cases that resembled standard CD jewel cases, but were about twice as thick. This was pretty good in that it meant there was plenty of room for a decent manual, plus the thicker spine made them easier to read on the shelf.
The down side is that they are much more difficult to replace for collectors nowadays, whereas replacement standard jewel cases are pretty easy to find.
Also, the thicker manuals permitted by the design usually just turned out to be a regular-sized manual, just in several different languages.
Actually, maybe the ability to hold multi-language manuals was the reason the European cases were thicker in the first place...

WH40k Blood Angels is still one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played, really loved it. Funny to see a relatively overlooked game end up being such a big deal for an oddball reason.

I haven't forgotten it, it was some of the most wonderous times in gaming. That first bootup of the system, those first experiences with polygonal graphics at home with games like Twisted Metal, Destruction Derby, Toshinden, Tekken, Air COmbat, Warhawk, Need for Speed, Descent, etc.
Some early promo material had Die Hard Trilogy in a long box, but ended up a jewel case game.
Another thing to note about Gunship and I think International Track and Field is that they have the "content rated by ESRB" blurb on the front.

I loved this era of PS1 games. I got the PS1 when it was released, what an incredible experience.
As a big game collector, finding a long box in good condition is increasingly rare. For that reason I snag any decently priced long box games I come across, having the original Need for Speed or Tekken in long box feels like owning video game history
1996 was an odd year for the PS1. The system itself was still looking for its identity and we had so much variety in games. I vividly remember borrowing Warhawk and Crazy Ivan from a video rental. Both were very unique and were one of their kind for its time.
I remember those long boxes being made of the most shatter prone plastic known to man. Those hinges would break if you put the game down slightly too hard. I'm sure the original ones from the 90s could be classified as explosive devices at this point with how dried out the plastic must be after 30 years.
I loved the longbox era of PS games. I had dozens of them and traded in a lot of them for the jewel case versions years later, because I had no idea the future included deep levels of nostalgia. Woe is me.

I remember it well actually. I was a teenager during that era. Doom, NBA Jam: T.E., and Warhawk, had those three in longbox. The doom was cardboard. But like you talk about, when they switched to the small music cd style jewel cases, alot of games that were in longbox were also seen in small jewel cases. like Warhawk
I can confirm I got Kings Field in March of 1996 right around my birthday. And yes it was long boxed.
I was really lucky and I won a PlayStation 1 in 1995 from a Pepsi promotion at my local store. I remember the first day going to the video store to rent some games, with all the long box games on the shelves and we rented and ended up buying Warhawk. I also remember playing the PlayStation demo CD like a million times. I miss those days.
I don't think anybody really forgot about this era if they were around back then, but I do appreciate all the research and cross verification that you did. I do agree that a lot of people just copy other sources and assume that it's correct without trying to dig deeper though. The long boxes I have are Return Fire (which is on the rarer more expensive side) with the ridges and then NFL GameDay which is just cardboard. Now that I Iook at the Return Fire box the glue on the front cover like dried so it's peeling off, damn. It looked near mint before even has the foam inside haha Well that's a bit disappointing but it just sits on my shelf anyway.

Same. That, and the SingleTrac intro. In high school, my buddy and I each bought a PS1 with our work money. He had the original Twisted Metal, and I had Warhawk.
I think marketing tactics changed and I think why they switched to Joel cases from large cases wasn't just a one-sided issue it was multifaceted economically it probably made sense but I think that marketing studies had shown that kids were growing up and getting their own source of income and it was better to have a visual image of something that was more common then something that was more valuable thus encouraging them to buy more to make it more impressive.
This is a really interesting video thank you so much for putting it up I was transitioning from playing video games to becoming more socially involved with my peers this was in high school for me and I wasn't doing much socializing when the PlayStation first came out it was the Pinnacle of video gaming for me it and the Nintendo 64. By the time the jewel cases started coming out I was already hanging out more than playing video games. Thanks for taking me back

Great video! This is my favorite era of Playstation the 1995-1996 era. They were still trying things out and there was some cool games that would never get made today. My favorite was the long cardboard box, they lasted the longest. The Saturn type ones are always broken or cracked and the ribbed spine ones have the problem where the label glue dries out and comes loose.

I had a few longbox games: Novastorm, Kings Field, Twisted Metal, Wipeout, Loaded, and Battle Arena Toshinden 2. Novastorm alone has survived all the moving around since then. The rest were put into regular jewel cases. Ahh...good times.
The nostalgia is hard for the PS1 long box. I bought my PS1 near launch, so my first few months were full of long box rentals and a handful of owned games. I'd love a long box collection, at least of some of the better titles, but the cases were horribly constructed and every variant had weaknesses:
The giant jewel box was brittle and deep scratches would appear on your game over-night.
The ribbed box's hinges cracked you were out of luck, because as you said, there are no replacements.
Ironically, the cardboard box was the most durable, with mangled corners, or peeling front being the biggest concerns.
It's funny that while Sega launched the sixth generation with standard CD jewel cases, when Sony and later Nintendo, entered the sixth generation, they'd essentially use the larger DVD style case, a trend that has essentially continued since.
As a European, I knew neither of these two boxes or cases for PS1 games. Over here all PS1 games had this special kind of jewelcase that was as thick as the longbox but otherwise had similar dimensions to regular CD jewelcases, but not quite. And because they were so specialized it’s sometimes pretty hard to come by replacements.
The games in often came with multilingual manuals which were very thick so the thick cases made sense
I remember those cases! I grew up in the US, but I remember early Japanese games also used those same cases. I loved their more compact, WAY more durable design. I wish we had those cases at launch instead of the cardboard ones. It will always remind me of playing Hermie Hopperhead!! Even the PAL territories knew not to mess with good JP design (just like the Super Famicom console for example...)
Wow, I didn't even know there was a Space Hulk game, let alone any Warhammer 40k games out on PS1. And my theory for the Long Box editions was that there are 2 reasons for a long box existing for it. 1st reason like you stated was that they were sent to retailers to advertise. My second reasoning is that they were review copies intended to be sent to game magazine reviewers to play and write about.
You made a great point about the experimental design of game. I think thats why it felt so exciting. Feels like unless its an indie game we know how most games will play.
I was gonna start a longbox collection but only got the first Resident Evil. Then it just turned in getting the japanese imports of the first 3 Resident Evils and that ended up being a center piece of my displayed games. I still wanna get a few other long boxes to put with their import versions. It makes for a unique display. Also we really missed out by using standard jewel cases after the switch from long boxes. Those japanese cases I got are absolutely amazing.
I remember the first availability of the PSX in Australia (at $699 AUD) but no longboxes.. Was jewel cases from the start. I remember dropping my playstation at one point and cracking the Hardcore 4x4 disc in it, and gluing it back together. It still worked except for the game music haha.
I love early PS1 games, their style is so different to the later ones. Here in PAL land we had some case variants but mostly they were uniform. I remember the earliest games being on regular double cd cases.
My brother & I shared a Genesis/Sega CD & SNES, but my first console I bought on my own was the PS1. I loved the long boxes,especially the Doom long case which had different artwork. I had a decent PS1 collection of long box games. I did prefer the cardboard overall.
I'm only 1:24 in but I HOPE you cover the different long boxes. There were all cardboard type ones. There were plastic ones that had the black sides (like jewel cases it like the Saturn boxes were) then there were the cardboard with the plastic lifts on the side instead of having the ridges look just printed on there
I got the Playstation for Christmas after it came out and I've had long box versions for many of PS1 games. Doom, Mortal Kombat 3, Tekken, Resident Evil, PO'ed, Battle Arena Toshinden, Alien Trilogy, D and Zoop.
As a PSX user since childhood: this game footage looks GORGEOUS. Crunchy and lovely.
I can still remember seeing the twisted metal 1 long box , on the shelves of Blockbuster.
I found long box version of Tekken, got it for $10 at the local flea market with manual and in good condition

I was 15 and the ps1 was must have for me, I was always dropping coins in the arcades so having a home console was amazing. I got MK trilogy, loved it, never went back to the arcades after getting it. I had to work all summer school holidays picking fruit to buy it. I will never forget the first time playing the original Resident Evil, or Tomb Raider and MGS.
Pc game boxes were partially so big because pc devopment started mostly with homebrew so many of the software boxes needed to fit standard printer paper. Some of the early releases on c64 came in gallon size zip lock bags. Then the IBM pc came out for bussiness with boxes designed to fit in with binders. Because it was only for business.

Im 31 so I was a little too old to have my own games but I remember my brother having those ps1 long boxes. By the time I became cognizant all the games were already jewel cases.
At the time I was playing these long box PlayStation games I was also playing a lot of doom doom 2 and eventually quake over lan Network
I lived in a small town and had a friend of a friend of a friend who knew a guy who had access to an office building on the weekends and we would all sneak in and hang out. All we did was drink soda eat chips shoot the s*** and play games. We also were into designing wads ourselves so we did a lot of that kind of stuff. I met a guy who knew a guy who knew somebody who had a pirate radio station in town and was operating it someone that was near my age. This was when internet access was really for showing up. I remember all the time spent in computer club or in the library before school at lunch and after school. It was a golden era of communication
I always wondered what the ridges on Playstation games jewel cases were supposed to be, until I found a long box with the actual ridges and finally understood what they were supposed to be it was a very interesting design choice, but when you hold in your hand, you realize how flimsy they could be, I've replaced many jewel cases and the games look like near mint but once those long boxes end up falling apart there is no turning back.

I've got around 20 PS1 longboxes here. I didn't get a PS1 until Christmas '96 or so, so I had no idea these even existed until I learned almost seven or eight years ago that my favorite game as a kid, Tekken, originally shipped in one. As you say, they're neat for the historical aspect as to how Sony originally wanted to market their games as premium products, and maybe I did get fooled too, because I do think they look rather nice on the shelf!
Hey now, Battle Arena Toshinden wasn't all that bad. While certainly not able to last like other series such as Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, the series still had solid enough mechanics, and was one of the first fighting game franchises to feature weapon-based combat as opposed to the usual barehanded combat of other series. It also had some amazing music.
That aside, I do remember some friends of my brothers having games with the longbox cases, in particular the original King's Field (and yes, I know it's actually the second game in that series).
If Battle Arena Toshinden was that bad of a game. i don't think they make a sequel or the third or fourth ;) When talking about weapon based fighters PS1 had some of the bedst like Soulblade and Bushido Blade

About 3-4 years ago I walked into a local GameStop that had a small retro section of games where they used to keep GBA/DS games at the counter under glass. I saw a 10/10 long box copy of Road Rash for $15. It was a cardboard long box with zero damage, the foam and warranty card were included as if it was unwrapped and never touched. I was ranting off to the GA that this was a needle in a haystack especially considering how well GameStop's used software conditions usually are (getting a case in decent condition is a long shot in the first place).
Unfortunately they don't have any retro games anymore. There was a location near me that had both Tomba 1 and 2 (loose copies unfortunately), but I really wish GS would bring back some retro games in store.
I had some of these long boxes on PSX, namely Resident Evil. Sold them but have long boxes on Saturn and Sega CD.
Space Hulk was one of the first Saturn games I got. I was disappointed.
I think most people don't remember these packages because at the time there were far too many platforms on the market. I remember going into games stores in 94-95, and there was Genesis, 3D0, CD-I, Sega CD, 32X, SNES, Neo-Geo, Jaguar and Jaguar CD, Saturn, Virtual Boy, PS1, Game Boy, Game Gear, and the Lynx. That's not even a comprehensive list! There were a lot of rare consoles that didn't sell everywhere, like the Pippin, the C64GS, and the Radio Shack ViS. Of course, being a PC gamer, they were usually relegated to a tiny section in the back of the store.
I had a couple of long box games as a kid, don't remember which ones and they are long gone unfortunately. My playstation from christmas 1997 is also gone, wish I held on to it.

When I first encountered the PS2 first tangible title wave I had not yet known what the standard DVD case looked like. Me being a huge PS1 fan from start to end you can imagine what I thought about the cases. 🤨🤔
Even though we had a PS1 early on I didn't see a longbox game until well after the PS2 came out. They were elusive that's for sure, and all of the better titles came out as greatest hits later on
Got my ps1 right as these were being phased out. My only game in a black box was Battle Arena Toshidan was never played due to it not fitting in my travel cd case holder thing.

an old ps1 demo disc had a game demo of 1st person in a battle car driving on a road thru underpass tunnels blowing stuff up and at one point a helicopter flys down in front of you, shooting at you,
i havent been able to find this anywhere ive looked, anybody else remember this demo?

Still have my copy of X-Com in its giant ass long box jewel case. Great game, a good example of a non 3-D game from this era. Was a port of a PC game though, so it is a bit different.
We had some sports game in a long box too but that was it. I remember seeing Loaded and Doom everywhere for sale in long boxes when the ps1 first came out but the cd cases seemed to replace everything immediately.

Longbox games because I had the psone as a kid very early after release. It was a game changing console for us.
I do remember owning Resident Evil 1 in longbox form because I wanted to play it on day one.
Sadly I don’t own many of them anymore because they were so large and not worth much back then.
I had a small jewel case version of space hulk but never saw a long box version.
I still have my long box xcom and espn extreme games tho
I remember seeing these long boxes at Blockbuster. was an easy way to tell if the game was pretty old
The black boxes with the ridges on the edge were the best but the clear ones were so brittle they broke so easily. We had ridge racer ,air combat, im not sure which others perhaps wipe out
Ohhh I didn't forget. When I rebought a couple classics they HAD to be Longbox. The Need For Speed, Twisted Metal, Resident Evil. It's Vinyl VS CD.
The 3DO and Sega CD are other examples consoles with varying package size and design. I think most don't remember this era because despite PS1 later becoming huge, in the early days it was a wild card. People were leery of all the new console hardware coming out in the 90s, the system was no more a sure bet than the 3DO, so it took a few years to gain the reputation it's now known for today. That, and a hefty price drop a year after coming out.
