Q&A - Just broke my collarbone and had surgery to repair it last week. What are your tips and tricks for getting back into training after an injury and when do you know you can start to push yourself (obviously part of that is getting the all clear from the doctor before doing anything)?

Hi guys! I'm moving to London in December from the US for college (uni!), and wanted to ask what part/side of town I'd want to be in/on in order to avoid that "commute to the ride" you guys keep talking about, as much as that is possible. I'm thinking southeast (Brixton/Camberwell/Kennington/Fulham) for access to Surrey Hills, Richmond Park, the area around Sevenoaks, and surroundings, but I've also heard good things about Epping Forest and other areas north of town, so I'm not sure. Either way, I want to avoid riding through downtown on the way to training as that sounds miserable, yet remain close-ish to allow bike commuting (probably a tall order I'm aware). I've also never ridden in London, are there any other areas/routes I should keep in mind? Any advice from locals would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
I live in Wimbledon. 10 mins to Richmond Park, 1hour to central for the commute and 45-60min to Surrey Hills. I love Surrey Hills but can’t comment much on other areas near London..
Clapham, Balham, Fulham, Wandsworth, Putney (all around 20 mins to Richmond park, 30 /40 to surrey hills, 30 mins to regents park or a nice little spin down CS7 into the city if youre feeling brave enough.. tbf the city is dead atm with people working from home, good way to explore the city by bike without the tourists)
I live South East. You have a few decent rides. Jackass lane and into the countryside around Toys Hill. I try to do this most mornings. The only issue is it's all there is. NE is a concrete jungle, but away from cycling it's a cool area. Based on cycling factors alone, you'll want to be in SW. But nearer to Richmond than places like Camberwell or Brixton. You still have a pretty busy ride to get to Richmond from there.
I guess it also depends what College you are heading to in London! It can make a huge difference; even 5 miles in London would lead me to suggesting different places.
Having lived all over the place in London I would suggest that you want to stay South of the river... I would say the areas around Wandsworth and Dulwich are worth a look as they offer a pretty happy medium for getting in and out of Town and some reasonable quiet roads to do it.... But be warned; there are no REALLY nice roads in and out...they are all pretty rammed on the outskirts of London. Is not until you get down into the Surrey Hills that you will really start to notice the cars disappearing...and then there are bloody cyclists everywhere!
Clapham / Battersea is a good area for the commute, and there's plenty of people your age around there too. Other places to consider: Putney, Richmond, Surbiton, Vauxhall, Elephant & Castle, Camden (North London), Highbury (North London)

Confidence. Be confident even if you have to fake it. It gets you further than you think.
