I've always preferred the more powerful take on them. Van Richten's Guide to Liches (2e) presented them as the next step up in power, that a demilich was to a lich, what the lich was to a mortal. Maybe its just because that was my first exposure to the idea but its always been my favorite version.
Very much the same. There's a lot I like about 5E, but the nerfing of so many creatures (undead especially) is definitely not one of them.
This video is exclusively about 5e, so I'm ignoring it. Demi-Liches have always been the step to Astral/Outer-Planes exploration by Lichdom, and are to be avoided at all costs. They're not a danger on the Prime unless disturbed.
Level draining needs to be reinstated.

@@darkkhalwb recover by resting? Hell no! Cleric restoration, yes the 7th level spell. Cost 10000gp + 10000gp per level of the recipient. Old school ad&d 1e.
A demilich should have access to gate in devils and demons. Not of the garden variety type either. A knowledge of their names, and location of amulets, and talisman. Maybe have a few imprisoned on their home plane of existence. That would make the devils and demons more cooperative when summoned into the material plane. The promise of freedom for completion of tasks that a devil and demon intends to do anyways upon arrival.
The undead under the control of a demilich is something of a side show. That was mastered during an earlier period of time. A demilich has moved onto bigger and better projects. Which exist outside the limitations found on the material plane of existence.
God im old. Liches never had to fuel a phylactery. Once it's done, it's done.
I still have post-traumatic stress about Gaax (or whatever its name was) from "Baldur's Gate II." Every time I see a floating skull enemy in a game for the first time, I panic a little.

A Demilich is just one that's putting it's defenses up, cuz it don't wanna fall in love.

So what I'm hearing is that liches are super saiyans and demi liches are "to go even farther beyond"
There is a variant that is just a skeletal hand, instead of a skull. Lovely way to misdirect enemies even further. By all means aim for the skull!
I wonder if a demilich could be a monarch with the soul gems fashioned into a crown of sorts.
I just finished your Vampire the Masquerade playlist and this auto played next. I can't help but think of your Elder Venture character now teaching the Neonate to play Dungeons & Dragons.
And it would be bespoke 1E AD&D books, AND NOTHING ELSE.
So a prepared lich finds out how to make soul gems and keeps filled gems upon their person and by their phylactery.

There is a secret ending for Mask of the Betrayer that requires you to side with the demilich, master the power of the soul eater, amd leave the aasimar chick alive by incapacitating her until Kelemvor kicks you out of the fugue plane.
Ive never seen anyone else get it, or cover it. Essentially the demilich becomes a minor deity and kills her and her brother when they come hunting him.

Demiliches have a lower CR than liches. For some reason.
Thats because the stat sheet for the Demilich is for the lesser one that have lost their powers. In a green add on text on their page it does give them the new options as well as their old stuff back upgrading it to the same as a regular lich or more if they are in their lair.
(I also think CR is a bad way of measureing an encounter simply because it can be quite misleading at times)
@@theashspawn I would love to homebrew an empowered demilich that’s stronger than the base form. And yeah, CR can be misleading.
In 3.5e, demiliches had CR 30. They were epic monsters.
@@tysondennis1016 Give the demilich an ability to gate in demon princes, and archdevils with a quickness. Most players are going to draw their attention to the looming large threat that isn't going to permit them from ignoring it. Meanwhile, an army of the dead quietly surrounds them all in case there would be any planning an escape. This is a good time to turn on a paper shredder to feed all the character sheet into.

Whats more powerful than a demilich?
Arguably an Archlich, but those are liches that became of divine power and are more Celestial in nature (Vecna does technically count, but Im referring to the "Good" Liches that ascended to god-hood in the lore of dnd back in 3rd/3.5 edition). They are technically not true liches anymore as they no longer need to consume souls due to their divinity. Another Lich Variant are Aberrant Liches, wizards that became infused with the forgotten realms energy/cthulhu powers and became... something lich-like, but also not really.
Two demiliches, I guess?
A lich/demilich-demigod. Followed by a lich/demilich-god like Vecna.
Arent Aberrant Liches also a tad bit more dangerous then a normal lich?
