- VAYAM ATRA, in our view, speaks of Tharangini's courage and vision to present a SANSKRIT song; not an oft-attempted effort in any performance in this genre in the world today (probably). While being patriotic and eulogizing our motherland, we also weaved in RECITATION as a form of art, again, not something you would find very easily today. The gist of the song is presented in the poetry, making it accessible to a wide variety of audiences globally. The sublime dance performance only added to the mystique of this number. This performance was part of Tharangini's mega-charity show in Hong Kong on May 24, 2008, MANJARI - A BOUQUET OF MELODIES. Vayam Atra is a traditional number.
Used to be my school prayer. Such a good song. I'll surely teach it to my kids

WHO IS THE AUTHOR OF THIS SONG
WE (CHORAL GROUP OF SRI VANI EDUCATION CENTER BANGALORE) HAD SUNG THIS SONG IN 1992 AND WE GOT THE NATIONAL AWARD FOR THE BEST CHORAL SINGING FROM ALL INDIA RADIO.
Dear @Jairam Parameswaran, the music for this song is composed by my father Sri.Mattur Laxmikeshava. He composed and taught this to his school choir which won the national award for this song at the All India Radio choir competition in 1992. I would appreciate if you can mention his name in the credits. Also curious to know where you heard/learnt this song from.

I have always hoped that someone somewhere will listen to this and let us know whose composition this is: you will note that in the original post, I have not taken any credit for the composition - and it was precisely for this reason. I believe that Music is God, and that has made you see this and write to me. We were given this song by a member who learnt it either at school or from her grandfather at home (I don’t exactly remember). This was most likely in Bangalore many many years back. Ok But we alll loved the song, and I decided to bring it to the people here. I am thrilled to hear from you (after SO MANY YEARS!! - we did this in 2008!). Hi nitinkolli - I looked up even before we performed this song. All I could convincingly recover was that this is a "traditional" number. One of our Tharangs learnt it when very young from her grandfather, Pandit D S Garud. It's his core melody. I tweaked it for choral purposes, Did the music arrangement, harmonies etc. the presentation idea was also mine.
Mukhda: It is indeed a good fortune (punyam) to have been born to this land - a land so holy, its sentiment so pure.
Antara 1: To be born to this land is not easily attainable by everyone. Those born here can attain godliness. Without any expectation of returns, those born to this land work righteously and dutifully.
Antara 2: There are no differences amongst us in our being or in our sentiment. We unify all religions and, we walk and speak together as one.

Hi KK ji - I would think this is primarily based on Yaman; although it is certainly not purely in that raga, and takes some liberties.
