Beetle gear shift linkage rebuild - shortening shift rod and new custom bushing for the Renobug.

- It's Wifey Wednesday! Time to do some more work on the Renault/VW Beetle project. In this round, the floor pan is finally painted and I can start assembly. First though, I need to shorten the gear shift rod to suit the shortened VW Beetle floor pan. I also make my own shift rod bushing, which is a huge improvement on the factory version.

I love your style of teaching.
On my youtube channel I tend to talk and illustrate a lot.
Some people may not like it but recently I’ve had problems with one of my French cars. The videos I watched are not clear enough.
Keep doing it your way boet.
I appreciate the attention you apply to details, not addressed on most channels, with your builds, don’t change a thing.
Great work Div, very informative on shortening VW beetle shift rods and SWMBO be happy so more suppers for you....hahaha
Fantasties Div. Altyd lekker om jou te sien planne maak wat werk.
Dankie!
Dear Dif.
👍👌👏 Very well done again (video and work). 2) It's "difinitely" the better, more detailed and therefore "diferent" content that made me once stick to your channel instantly. And I know, that it's more effort to film and edit this kind of content. Therefore again and as always:
Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health in particular.
I find value in your vids👍
Great job. In my experience with VWs and dune buggies you just fixed one of the most annoying problems, the sloppy shifter. This is quite an upgrade.
Yes, if you know, you know! 🙂
Nice work Div. Enjoy all your programs. Be good my friend and have a Lekka one Boet.
Thanks boet!
I need a lathe such a useful tool you’ve made parts that are better than the purchased ones. Great job 👏
Thanks 👍
Very nice fabrication buddy
Thanks 👍
Great job and another great video 👍👍
You to. And nice work
Great ingenuity👍
Thanks
I love your grass roots mechanics approach. Look forward to seeing the final result.
Not bad ⚡️ I’m learning things I’ll never use because I’m to old to use them but I’m happy to see you gaining viewers 👍
Very satisfying to see it work! Cheers from the shed
Thanks brother 👍
Div, you must be a very highly respected member of the community. The politicians, in their grey suits come to visit you. Time stamp 17.05 to 17.30
My immediate thoughts as well. 😂 🇿🇦
🤣 Actually this fellow knows a little more than them!
@@ratrodsafrica probably a lot more.
Nice work! It's always over too soon...
Project is looking awesome!!
Liked the new intro, as always the renobug is coming along. Appreciate the bushing build. Help shows how much work actually goes into a build.💯
The intro was lekka man. Appreciate the video! 🍺
Baie dankie vir die video. Now I am going to get my brother in law to turn me a bushing like that for my beetle. Can't wait for your next video. I appreciate what you do and teaching us with your informative videos. Have a lekker one!
It works well! Thanks and pleasure
poly pipe is so useful.
For me value in memories of all the VW's I worked on as they were very popular in S Cali. Hot Rods are def my fav but I'm loving this project!
I think most of us have memories of working on the Bugs. I'm remembering so many myself 😀
dude, you just rock!
Love it
Amazing, simple solution to a complex problem, Te slim vir een persoon, is jy seker jy is nie n' tweeling! Thanks Boet.
I just love spending time in your garage. Watching you make bushings is fine by me! Thanks man, well done! Wish I could help you lift that transmission in. 😊👍👍
I love the way you put that insert into pipe I’ll definitely be using that idea.
Thanks. Please do, it works well
That is why we watch you Bru cause that's what we want to c ❤
Thanks bru
VW enthusiasts secret: The top of a plastic bottle (such as a plastic oil top-up bottle) when cut off is a perfect fit (and I do mean perfect!) for a shift rod bushing and works better than the factory bushing.
Interesting! I'm gonna check that out.
I'm the same Diff, not a machinist but I get the job done. NICE WORK.
Thanks. Getting it done to work is all that matters 🙂
I learned a bit from your videos 😊
I'm glad!😊
I loved the zoom-in intro because I dream of visiting South Africa and visiting Div and working in the shop.

Job well done Diff, always something up your sleeve, a new creation.
Very creative. I think that is going to be useful in future.
Great video and lesson. You are a Jack of all trades - metal worker, welder, wood worker, painter and visionary.
Thanks!
It's an awesome adventure as always brother from another country Awesome engineering from the wise Ole owl lol😅 you are an awesome engineer brother no doubt !!!! Say hi to everyone and have a lekka one brother from another country
Always nice when a plan comes together. It is the little details that can make a car a joy to ride or complete rubbish.
True words!
This is some really good information. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Like how you show the things that are important for a smooth shift that are unseen, this is a great channel!
Thanks!
Div. I can’t express how much I appreciate your channel
Thank You
Thanks brother!
I remember ol' mate in 1975 when Greg Nolan told me Nolathane, which is similar to what you made the bush from would revolutionise replacement bushings. You can just about make any bush you need from it nowadays
Thanks for the Map. Shiny paint are you sure you are Div. Happy Wife = Happy Life. Lekka Div
😁👍
Dif, No need to apologize to any one regarding how you do things. as a rule, people may ask ''IS IT DONE" ? If it is yes, the story over! 'There is on off switch for creativity' AWESOME SHOW MY BROTHER, OGs RULE! mike.
Thanks. Yes, I enjoy the journey more than the destination 🙂
Love watching your channel bro learning so much keep up the good work 👍

Can't wait to see that car moving around. That will become a nice small toy car one dat. Thanks for taking us around, have a good one!
I believe You have talent above, most builders. Your understanding of how the original works before You modify it to work as designed, I know this type of work is not easy, I like Your content. YOU WIN!
Wow, thank you!
It's going to a fun little car. I've learned a lot by watching your channel. Always a pleasure watching. Thank you 👍
Glad you enjoy it!
Very cool , a man of many talents .. Build On Bro

Hello Div. I love watching you work. And how you come up with solutions. I'm a lot like you. We could be friends . If you weren't a million miles away. I have been a VW crazy for many years. I traded most my vw stuff . Ans have been working on my Ol' Beater 54 Chevy. (I'm now a 73year. retired Ol'Beater myself. Great Job with the bushing. And shifter modification. Great Job.
Thanks brother
Always a pleasure watching your ingenuity Div!!!!!!
Thanks
Your children climbing in the tree did not inherit your good looks. HAHA. Another good one Diff
😁👍
Hi ,I live in the UK and it is nice to see where you are hiding in South Africa
I really like watching your channel! I have learned so much from watching you!!!
Thanks. Glad it's helpful!
Hey Div,
This video brought back memories of building my first dune buggy where I had to figure out what you just showed.
I did something like what you did to achieve the same results.
That home made bushing was just as tight when I sold the car as it was when I made it.
I expect yours will last the life of the car !
Take Care, Be Safe
Enjoy Life
Value?! This is priceless! I love seeing the little things that help make the project move forward. Usually you don’t get to see that. You just have to wonder how it was done. I love it my brother!!!!!
👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks man! These days, everyone just wants sensational instant gratification and loud bravado.
A pudding stirrer is what we call a sloppy gear lever. That bush has made all the difference.👍
Haha, yes, good description
Great job 👍 Diff
Great job! Sharing your skills with the next generation is priceless. Helps to show that you don't need a bottomless bank account to have something cool to drive around that's not a "cookie cutter" design. Have a good one!
Yes! Thank you!
Nice!
👍
Thanks! 👍
Artist, builder, man of grace and peace, engineering genius, fabricator bar none - that's why we love you Div
Ah, thanks for the compliments!
You are my type of professional my friend. you always impress me with your work.
Great job Div
Always a pleasure thanks for sharing 😀👍
Buddyyyyy. lol. I must be tired today. It took me until your hand crafted bushing popped into place before I realized the design, and what a cool one it is man. I can see that little rubber O ring wandering back and forth in no time. lol. Yours will be there from now on. Nice work and design. Thx again for sharing this with us all my friend. Very clean project too. Love this 👍🏻✌🏻
Really nice work Diff.
Greetings from Misery Bay
Northern Denmark
Don't think I'll ever have a vw to do that too but I never know what my friends might show up with, you definitely made an improvement over the factory fall apart model and it always good information to have in our arsenal of how-to information, great fix Dif
The drive train is looking really nice. Building from scratch is always fun to watch no matter what is going on.I enjoyed it. Don't worry about how clean your hands should be your a worker not a slacker who needs to dress up for the camera.Take care Brother see you in the next video.
Enjoyed the video and the new to me Intro. I think from what I saw of the white material it looks like UHMW, and as far as machining if you got the task at hand done and it working as far as I'm concerned it was the correct speed and with the same as the tooling it's not a fashion show and sometime work isn't pretty.
hi Div love your video and what you do thanks for sharing your knowledge i am from joburg east rand and will be relocating to plettenburg bay in the near future close to your town retiring from the motor trade after 54 years
Plett is not so far from me. You better come visit once you've moved. 🙂
Amazing video Div, tried to fit a bushing there before an absolute bastard of a job, great video Boet, have a lekka one Div
Hi Dear Friend Very Very Good Job I Like ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you!
As far as how you do your machining goes Div, I say 'whatever makes you happy ', you're doing good man. Take that as a compliment from a long retired, 55 year experience Fitter and Machinist.
I know you watch the Cutting Edge Engineering vids and just like Kurtis, you also have wildlife visiting your workshop only yours could be trained to do some work😂.
Cheers mate.
What makes me think you watched to the very end?🙂 Thanks!
Yo Div! You never cease to amaze me with your skills and attention to detail. You are also right that in the big shows they dont show or highlight those little small details at all. I must say that I would have never even thought about making my own custom bushing on the lathe, but you did a superb job!! Love the details, enjoyed the babboons or monkeys too 😂. See ya in the next one boet!!
Thanks boet!
What I see is a piece of Neoprene . Looks good 👍. I've seen these used for everything from garden hose gaskets to bathtub seals. On autos tubing seals and bushings.
THANKS for sharing Diff. As Rat Rod Bob would say: Class dismissed. 😊
I like that intro.
6:36 A Vernier caliper? Now that's old school. Lol
Yeah, accurate enough for an old school dude 😀
Nice job Div 👍
