My daughter had her twin 7year olds there yesterday after school. I’m housebound so it was lovely for me to see where they were! They had a great time and left about the same time as you and Lucy said it was indeed starting to get very busy then. Loved the video. x
Took me right back - as you say 100 years ago when I was 12 or so :-). The Hoppings and the Spannah were/are two Tyneside institutions. Another crackin' video Eddie!! Thanks!
Hi Eddie, you took me straight home with this video, I was born in Whitley Bay but now live in Corfu …Memories of going to the town moor with my mom and big brother …Totally nostalgic…
Great Video, brings back memories when i was a kid. You never see any videos from the tyneside summer exhibition though which was my absolute favourite.
Great video and brings back fond memories of being back home. One of those places that you have to ignore the cost and enjoy the day out, if it does get a bit too much you could always 'Whack a Mackem' to feel a bit better about it all....We have the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) here in Vancouver, much smaller and even more sodden costly. Nice touch at the end being escorted out.....
The fairground children came to my school, they couldn't read or write very well but they had pound notes to go to the chip shop ,i thought they were very exotic, they loved coming in to our flat .
Yes crows took over organizing the fair but it used to be split into 4 sections ran by 4 showman they would collect rent off the their section ..I was working there in the 70s with John Murpyhs and also with Jobsons great days back then...
Yes the hoppings fairground children used to go to my school, they had pound notes to buy fish and chips at lunchtime but couldn't read or write but we thought they were so exotic and they loved the fact that we lived in flats near the town moor.

Brilliant video again Eddie, 9.9/10. Would have been 10 oota 10 but you said "chav" at the last hurdle. A proud Geordie lad like yasell should kna that "chav" is a diluted term from the Geordie word "Charva" . Meaning, tramp, wrongun, untrust worthy person. I might be wrong but it comes from romany travellers, worth looking into wor kid.
I’ve lived all over the UK and the only place to say charva (in my experience) is here. The original term is Chav but who’s going to quibble… it refers to the same type of person. You’re correct, the term is Romani in origin, but again, it’s Chav. It’s semantics mate and you get a slapped wrist for being pedantic 😅
@@TynesideLife 'Charva' is easily confused with 'Chavvy' which is a Romany word for a child or a youth, I dare say one probably came from the other and its meaning has become slightly modified
I absolutely love your videos Eddy. Great informative content but I love your sense of humour too. Class 👌
Thank you 🤜🏻
Brings back happy memories of when I was a child!, we always called it going to the town moor not the hoppings…

Loved it. As a student in the mid 70's I remember the "Wall of Death" and boxing ring with Roxy Music blaring on the pa. Good times.
It's expanded since I was there as a bairn back in the 60's.. Whack a Mackem stand made I chuckle nice sunny day 😎
