How to Be Well Groomed (1949)

  • This film details the grooming rituals of brother "Don" and sister "Sue". Both are incredibly neat; in fact, grooming seems to occupy their entire day, while their evenings are spent ironing outfits and polishing shoes. The work load is so heavy it requires two narrators! Features some excellent voice over lines, including:
"Sue avoids red nail polish since it would call attention to her stubby hands."
"Mother too keeps up a good appearance even around the house, for that keeps up her spirits."
"Their good grooming habits help them in friendships and business. For your success depends a great deal on how you look."
    Producer: Coronet Instructional Films

I love this but how things have changed. Each person is an individual in the way that they dress now. Some people hate formal dressing while others relish at the idea of dressing up.
It's the cleanliness part that should never go out of style.

As I was born in 1951, I can say that the standards presented are familiar to me and variations were suspect. It didn't take much to be critiqued, even an untucked shirt was cause for concern. One young lady I remember from grade school got scolded by sister (I went to Catholic school) because her bangs were slightly teased. It amuses me to see this with the perspective of today's dress codes.

I don't necessarily like some of the snootiness or ignorance that went along with this era in history, but it can be better than the complete disregard for simple manners or common sense some people can have now. I like variety in my daily outfits, but as long as they still look clean and presentable when going out. Trying to get out of my sloppy sweats wardrobe these days, and there are many others that still can't do that for some reason... xD

I'm just old fashioned but I wear a belt with shirt tucked in. I do not wear a suit to school or work like these kids but keep myself well groomed. Some of it is from the army, but much of it comes from my upbringing especially my father. You want to be treated like a man, try to look like one. It definitely gains respect and trust and defines your character.

Talk about dressing for school: when I was in school back in the 70's, the kids used to wear bleached jeans, hip-hugger jeans, jackets with writing all over them, and a few of the girls wore hot pants. One girl came to school with so much make-up that one of the teachers said something to her about it.
But y parents never allowed me to dress like that. I always wore conservative clothes. I got made fun of, But you know what, I really don't care. They always taught me to dress like a lady.

My daughter graduated 2 weeks ago. I was shocked at the way people dressed for the event. I'm only 45, but I guess I missed where women stopped wearing panty hose and started pairing flip-flops with a dress -- the few that actually bothered to wear a dress that is. The woman in front of me had her thong hanging out of her extremely low cut jeans. Most of the men wore ball caps the during the entire indoor ceremony. And the air horns were totally unacceptable.

Wow...beauty rituals have changed. Now to be presentable you have to shower, wash your hair, condition it, mousse it, morrocan oil it and dry it. Brush and floss your teeth, then mouthwash. Shave every nook and cranny of your body, polish every nail and toe, apply foundation, blush, eyeshadow, liner, mascara, lipstick and lipgloss and then suck down a starbucks without ruining your makeup. And this every day! Who started this shit anyway....

Damn. Rollers, polish, manicures, powder, lipstick ... Society took a lot for granted those days. But they're right about one thing - appearances influence your life greatly. Just go to a fancy store/group of guys/visit in an old T-shirt or a suit and see how you'll be trated. Being clean is far from enough.

I don't think they should have skipped the bathing portion of the film. Many people don't do that correctly; they forget the belly button hole, between each of their toes, the creases between their legs and genitals, the butthole, and fat people forget to lift up every roll and their necks. It is also important to dry every crevice completely as any moisture left on your body will cause odor.

  • @OS253

Well, sort of. Have you notice in the old days, people seem to dress more elegantly at home and in public? This video was a major contribution to that. In today's society, we all look like slobs. When was the last time your neighbor comb his hair or bathe? You see, people's grooming habits have change since the 1940's.

Some apartments had share bathrooms in the hall ways. And people wore there clothes for two days, but skipped a day ,so you werent seen in the same clothes. im guessing 1930's and 40's.

@whatevr192 the graduates were in caps and gowns, obviously .... I'm talking about the parents and guests that were there for the ceremony. But as far as a school dress code, it's VERY lax.
