Surrounded By Gypsies In Europe's Biggest Slum | Luník IX

  • Luník IX is the most feared and notorious place in Europe, the infamous gypsy ghetto called Luník IX which lays on the outskirts of the 2nd largest Slovak city Košice. This housing estate houses one of the largest communities of Romani people in Slovakia. Although originally built for 2,500 inhabitants, it is estimated that the population is now three times larger.
Living standards are low, with services such as gas, water, and electricity cut off. Luník IX is serviced by a bus line, which stops only on selected bus stops. Due to frequent attacks of aggressive residents, bus drivers deployed on the line receive a hazard pay.
But is that all true or just over exaggerated rumours? Let's go on the journey and find out for ourselves!

We also have ghettos like that in Poland but in our country the main divide is the wealth and substance abuse.
In every town in Poland there are social block of flats with lowered standards to accommodate homeless or people who are unable to pay the rent because of unemployment/poverty.
They look equally bad, if not worse.
The terrifying thing is that there are normal people living in such conditions. Councils should be doing all they can to remove them from those places.

We Slovaks seen this multiple times , someone comes there or to any other slums , and instantly stop blaming Slovaks how racist we are, how racist Polish and Czech are, because they said their side of the story and how they are unable to work because noone would take them. Always forget to mention how these communities work and their excuses , always there's someone to blame just not them. All those years Europe Union spent millions on them and projects from freeing depths , to free lands to build house without any permit hassles , even if they built it on someone else property it's alright , you can't remove it. If they don't pay for water or electricity, EU will, because they deserve the same standard as everyone else... Just not responsibility for their own life , there are dozens of these in Slovakia and the only solution government and EU came up with is to basically let kids pass the school even when not attending or getting the worst grades , only so they can at leave have a school , and pay them well so they don't start acting up, and let them do whatever they want. I challenge you to take a camera and looks closely to Slovakia villages , or even ask Slovak to show you some , for example the ones in which they are killing dogs and make grease out of it, in which even reporters with police got attacked. Then you can judge Slovaks all you want. If Slovakia is so horrible , just take them to Germany or your country , or to your house. Then we can talk after few years how's things. You guys just come to make one video and then lecture people that are living with them for 20 years , while probably you've never ever seen anything like it. And this one is not dangerous at all, even their major said ( also Roma ) that they have to behave accordingly, just travel to some more local villages and see

As a Roma Gipsy born and raised in the old tradition I can hand on heart say I feel an all time low. Not only by the people's intentions in this video, but also from the comments on this video from Czechs and Slovaks. This ghetto of sort, is a place not many dare to go and no matter how you put it, the people who live there don't work, and live in dangerously low conditions. The closest thing thing to compare to it would be the favelas (Brazilian slums).
On the other hand, I would also like to say that living like this doesn't apply to most of the Roma Gipsy in Czech & Slovakia (the white population may say otherwise). The illusion that all of us don't work, steal and live like this is purely from a time we were at an all time low. Me, my family and friends all work and have good lives god bless.
I certainly hope not to offend anyone in this comment, but only to inform. Also, for everyone's information, I also have 'white' Czech blood in me and therefore know how both parties look at this situation.

How much is it caused by the lack of employment opportunities for the Roma people? Because I'm trying to understand how much of the "gypsies don't work" comes from the fact that they were the first ones to lose their jobs after communism fell and struggled to be trusted and employed since.
If you grow up in a family where your father has not been employed as long as you were alive, doesn't that impact how you perceive employment and dignified life?
      How would you address this?

    • @janturtak9859
      @janturtak9859 Рік тому +5

Hi@@hqlife5128, that is a good question. In order to determine 'how much it is caused by the lack of employment opportunities?' you would first need to calculate the lost opportunities themselves. Unless an appointed Roma candidate is open to have someone keep a tally it is tough to calculate.
You can also potentially compare the data of unemployment in Roma against everyone else after the soviet union fell in Czechoslovakia, but that is not taking into account the opportunities given to a minority against the majority.
I believe there are many factors on the view of the Roma out there, however, to blame it all on the minority's minority mindset or style of living is like taking all the Indians in the US and saying because a few tribes follow old traditions they are all deemed shamans.
As a Roma myself I am going to have different opinions, however the fact is you haven't experienced it in the way like we do. Me or my family for example, all work and have worked since I remember. My Roma friends all work and their families also, because the system isn't exactly great in terms of benefits in Czechoslovakia and without jobs they would starve, despite the 'view' from the majority saying otherwise.
I no longer live in Czech or Slovakia, and have not lived there for over 13+ years but visit twice a year and let me tell you, I haven't met a Roma who isn't doing well for themselves outside of those countries, and why you ask? Because they are not labelled 'thieves, black swine, jobless or treated differently because of they ethnic background.
Back home (Czech), many cant even get houses or Jobs because the landlords simply deny them because they are Roma. So, they are left with construction or excavating jobs etc. I very much doubt I would be a Project Manager if I stayed back home.
I believe its denial, racism and hatred that causes the Roma minority to stay frozen in time with they way of live in countries like these. The mentality is 'we are being treated like we are not of pure blood, so we have not dignity to lose, no money to lose because we have non etc etc.
This mentality gets passed down in some Roma families and the cycle continues. My father used to tell me stories as a child of growing up in Czech, and I feared them. He grew up in Prague, a capital city, where he was denied entry to pubs, restaurants and was forced to leave school to be sent to a 'special school' because that's where most of his Roma peers would be sent (thinking they were all dumb). Guess what, he's now a multi-business owner in the UK and he achieved it despite the country's views.

You would have to try to civilize them individually person by person and even that is questionable 😅 I went to school there too and we were only 3 students who had some interest to study and rest just became a copy paste of their parents, a lot of kids in early age, no interest to work, drug and alcohol adict. However, I've seen many families from Lunik IX changing their lives after moving to Belgium or UK. I guess Slovakia doesn't have the social capability needed yet.

    • @frankb5953

I know of a solution but it would be deemed ''racist'' and ''discriminatory''. But I feel the same way about any people no matter the race or colour. Anyway it won't happen because of EU rules and hypocrisy while more children suffer, and the cycle will continue. Let's face it, these kids don't stand a chance in that environment with junkies etc around. It's so sad honestly.
The ones who immigrate are usually more ambitious and that's why they do better. I also met some real scumbags who would lure their fellow people from the Roma community only to use them as slaves here in the UK.
I saw that girl with the cleft lip in this video and I was wondering how that is possible today? It's a simple inexpensive surgery and only the most poorest/remote countries don't get such simple operations done. I really felt bad for her.

It's the same with black people growing up in black neighborhoods in the US. Children always imitate the behavior of their parents and when the boys grow up without a male role model because their fathers are in the prison, they go and look for one in a gang...which makes them end up in a prison later in life and their kids having the same upbringings as they had. It's the never-ending circle of poverty, violence and desperation. I honestly have no idea how this could be solved. You can take away young kids when they're 1 year old and put them into better families to grow up in a good environment but how do you expect to do that on a large scale when there are millions and millions of black people living in ghettos in the US. It is just impossible at this point and it has nothing to do with race or discrimination. White people growing up in horrible conditions are just as fucked up.

I would say that these gypsies had never met a black man face to face before and you were a great attraction for them. Suddenly there is someone with them on Luník who has darker skin than them. You definitely earned their respect by doing so. I don't know if the correct name for Luník is slum or ghetto. The most dangerous weapon is a knife, they don't shoot people in the streets and people don´t disappear.

@@antoninmarek4326 I read: "The tension between multilateral and country-level definitions of what constitutes a slum precipitates the central research question of this paper: does it matter how slums are defined?" Ok.
Children from Luník IX were born in a hospital as the majority. They have the right to education, both sexes, school attendance is compulsory. Not going to school is punished by the withdrawal of benefits for children. The territory of the Luník IX does not live outside the Slovak law. I recently drove through the endless slums in the suburbs of Buenos Aires and it was explained to me that, for example, there is no police at all and there is not a single camera because it would be very difficult to keep order. There is also an uncontrolled increase in illegal immigrants from neighboring countries.
      Slum definition
The definition of what constitutes a slum, like that which constitutes an urban area more generally (Dorélien et al., 2013), differs by country (United Nations, 2014), state (Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, 2008) and even city (O’Hare et al., 1998). Recent research has also indicated that slums may be more heterogeneous than is often assumed (Goli et al., 2011, Chandrasekhar and Montgomery, 2009, Agarwal and Taneja, 2005); many poor people like pavement dwellers do not live in slums and are therefore not “counted” by the standard definitions (Agarwal, 2011).

Greetings , I am Rromani from Republic of Moldova and I've seen videos about this slum before- one thing I don't get, I'm not sure if it's cleaner now (but if it's not, anyway), so I don't get why they don't clean? As a community there are so many people there, they can gather one day or two, or more, depending how dirty it is (and it's filthy as I noticed in other videos) - Instead of asking for help(which most likely they won't receive), it would be better that they prove themselves useful first, by keeping cleanliness at least in the neighborhoods, and keeping clean themselves, so the local government is gonna be most likely impressed and *will give help* . But even if it doesn't help- at least keeping cleanliness will better the image of that place, I know apparently seems like it gets attention due to garbage, imagine how attractive this place will be if it gets clean, plus the most important thing- kids are gonna be healthier; about drug use, I don't know it should be a serious work to that kids to not make them become addicted anymore. (But of course, who am I to give advice and most likely they won't do it)
