hey,,,i am just wondering,, N690 is stainless steel,,,and every "bigger" knife maker says,,it must be heat treated in stainless foil...without air present and so on,,,air cooling etc,, i know that Nordisches handwerk says for this steel,can be treated in oil... can you tell us more about your experience about heat treating SS steel on this way,, and are you satisfied with results? tnx a lot,,,,i admire your work edit: and most important,do you know why knive cracked after heat treatment,,,?...after all,we are all here to learn and improve,,tnx
Yes, its true, that you have to protect stainless steel from oxigenous environments. You can use foil, or you can use Condurzal Z1100. It's the green stuff, that I "paint" onto the knife before heattreatment. I always had good experience with this way. The knife cracked, because there was a slight bend in it after HT and i tried to straighten it in a vice before tempering. Thereby it snaped..

The beautiful of the Bowie is unmatched, personally I think a sharpened clip would make it even better.
The part where he sucks up all the metal shavings and cut to a clean work space was super satisfying.

I find you can't go wrong with Nicholson files. As for the length, I'd say 10 or 12 inches for the filing jig.
