Back when I started playing youth ball I ended up at DE I was told that it was because I was long but didn’t even start or play much there. I didn’t like it, wanted to play WR and I was really talented but the coaches had their favorites and I never got a fair shot. Then one day while working on the starting defense I asked if I could go to WR on the scout team👀 no one could stop me I was catching the ball over DB’s and the defensive coach got mad mad them run🤣 then the head coach pulled me to the side say “Wallace bring your jersey to practice tomorrow I’m going to change your number.” Went from 99 to 42 and became a focal point of the offense from that moment forward! I had to share this story because I agree with the dad ball deal! I’m a dad as well my son plays on the 8u team and I’m now coaching the 14u team as a first time coach and going to call the offense! Guys help me!!! but I’m taking complete opposite approach than the dad ball deal because of my experience. Sorry for the long comment 💯 but love the content between you and Coach Simpson you’ve helped ease my mind and build my confidence

I'm watching this years after it was made but I love it and feel like a dope for not thinking of it. I'm even going to apply it to my kids flag football teams.
On the second half of the video... Thank you so much for everything you're saying about youth sports. It should be about player development, fun, and growing love for the game, regardless of sport. I coach football, baseball, and sometimes basketball and it gets so frustrating on those levels with all the daddy ball stuff. I sometimes feel crazy for believing like I do... But thanks for being a voice that reassures me I'm not.

Question: I love the concept of installing a group of play on day 1, and then repping them again on day 2; do you think the same thing could be achieved in a 2-a-day practice situation? So install a group of plays in practice 1 (e.g. Monday morning) and then rep them in practice 2 (e.g. Monday afternoon)

I coach Youth League. I'm a dad but my son is not old enough to play. I plan to not let him join a tackle league until he is 11. In my opinion at 11 when kids start to go through puberty the game speeds up and the hits get harder. As to fat kids and big kids having to be linemen, I coach the Line and I make a big deal out of how important the line is to the success of the team and it's a special club that the other guys don't get to be part of. Basically A lineman's club with special t-shirts that only they get, lineman dinners, etc. I also tend to remind them that in football your position is the only one that has "Man" in it's name 😉
I'm a Single Wing guy so my offense is lineman centric and the backs receivers have to block and I can rotate kids in at the QB/TB and RB and WB.

So based on the if then methodology, if I’m running GT counter and their squeezing down I can run the GT inside and go BOB on that squeeze side. But that means I have way of using another if then if they are chasing and relaxing on the backside? How many if/thens can I use for a specific play scheme?

Watching this video a month later but to put my 2 cents in for the youth debate. When I coached middle school at my alma mater for 5 years I would go to youth games to support the youth programs. Some of those youth coaches had their kids in the middle school program so they knew who I was and would use me as a sort of motivator for the kids. During a game I watched the opposing team coaches grab their kids by the shoulder pads and yell in their faces. I watched my youth team coaches curse and berate the kids, calling them soft and constantly contradicting themselves. It was so bad their QB skipped his 7th grade year because his drive was ruined by the youth coaches.
Most youth coaches are extremely unqualified and unfortunately there isn’t any way to fix the issue. I am on board with flag football up to at the very least 6th grade. I’ve been coaching football for nearly a decade now (I know new guy here) and I’ve told multiple people close to me that if I’m lucky enough to have kids they will not play youth football.

  • @anthonyarinaga9086
    @anthonyarinaga9086 3 роки тому +1

Formationally I think it all boils down to 2x2 or 3x1 for the most part. As soon as players understand that there is a Playside #1 Playside #2 Backside#1 Backside #2 etc. It makes it easier to shift into the alignment you need to run the ball and pass

Careful crapping on youth coaches. Question, how is the high school teacher who decides to coach football to make some extra money on the high school level any better than a youth coach? Many of them do it and really don’t know any more if not less than most youth coaches. Most coaches varsity, middle school and youth are “has beens” just trying to give back to this sport.
Cancelling youth football is going to kill your numbers when high school roles around. The kids in your area will be specialized in another sport, or some will have transferred to the neighboring rival school that has played youth football and now want to play with the same kids if they had a good experience. I believe most states are school of choice now.
The flag football or 7 on 7 is fun, but it’s not real football for OL/DL development. I have three of my fourth-grade fat guys playing flag this spring and asked how they like it? They say it’s fun but would rather play tackle. They can be more physical blocking and tackling and use skills they excel at and take pride in being physical.

    • @CoachMcKie

Fantastic post coach. And let me put it out there...I'm not crapping on all Youth Coaches. I know there are some amazing ones out there.
Now I'm going to do my best to answer all the points you brought up. So bare with me. And if it sounds like I'm being an asshole...I promise I'm not. It's hard to get across tone on the internet.
"Question, how is the high school teacher who decides to coach football to make some extra money on the high school level any better than a youth coach? There is nothing wrong with coaches earning extra money as a youth coach. To be honest, I didn't even know youth coaches got paid. Every one I've been around were volunteers. That's new to me. When I say 'Has Beens' I'm talking about people who are trying to relive their glory days through their kids. We all know parents like that and we can spot them a mile away.
"Cancelling youth football is going to kill your numbers when high school roles around. I believe most states are school of choice now. "
I didn't want to cancel youth football. I want the tackling part canceled. Because there of the lack of proper teaching, huge discrepancy in sizes at that level, and the lack of oversight. There are ways to get kids excited and build a program along with way. I talk about Coach Mike Rowe who did it at his place. He built a thriving rec department that helped his middle school and high school win multiple state championships.
"The flag football or 7 on 7 is fun, but it’s not real football for OL/DL development. I have three of my fourth-grade fat guys playing flag this spring and asked how they like it? I honestly don't know how you can build OL/DL development with kids that are 10 and under because you don't know what puberty will do to their body. Again, Mike Rowe talked about how his best WR was a short fat player in his youth and he would have had to play OL in rec...which would have caused him to quit football all together. And I'm just going out on a limb here - but those kids who would rather tackle and be more physical are probably bigger than all the other kids in their age group.
So to help them out there can be like a rec league for OL/DL challenges and things like that. For kids who are on the same level physically. But I don't believe in throwing all those players together and having them playing tackle football.
Again, love having this discussion with you and loved your well thought out response.
High fives and butt slaps coach! Love this.

@@CoachMcKie Coach McKie, love the channel and your reply. Just to clarify I meant teachers who sign on to coach football to make some extra money (because they're not paid enough), but really have no business coaching football. I have seen this firsthand at smaller schools on the high school level because the head coach may not have any other options than to let Bob the science teacher coach the freshman team. I find that to be just as bad as some youth coaches, if not worse. I agree with you every youth coach has been a volunteer, and most are trying to help their child have a positive experience even if they are clueless.
I think varsity and youth head coaches run into some of the same problems with trying to find good assistant coaches that understand the basics of the game.
The whole debate about tackle football and when to start it is a great discussion and could take up another entire show. I do feel some of this stems from the woke mentality, cancel culture we live in today that wants to eliminate tackle football in general.
I would say for varsity head coaches they should have something in place or a plan around their youth program if possible. It may not be fair and requires that much more effort from a varsity coach but just a small amount of time makes a big difference. Stopping by practice or having the varsity players come talk to the young kids and invite them to the game on Friday night goes a long way in helping build the culture in that program, and the youth kids love it.

Yeah I love this discussion. I’m in the same area. My daughter plays high school volleyball basketball and softball and the coaches are not working and teaching. It’s glorified babysitting. I myself am a youth coach and I know I work harder for free at developing these kids than paid HS coaches. At the same time I did hold my 10 yr old out of equip football until this year. He’s played flag since 7 and is a bigger kid with plodding footwork but wants to play QB. He worked his ass off a coach from another town took one lol at him and threw him at OT. Almost killed his love. My other is 7 and I’m starting him now. I think both had diff mentalities so I handled them slightly diff. Either way love the talk love the vids you do great stuff and I appreciate your op LHJR👍🏽 thank you guys.

1:00:52 love your channel dude but i disagree with putting obviously heavy kids out of position just for the hell of it. Heres why: 1 they dont present a competitive advantage and kids Hate to lose. Wanna kill a kids love for the game drag em through a 0 and 8 season. 2 Offensive line is fun as fuq if you get over "not being the guy" plus its a lesson in life sacrificing your surface level desires for the greater good of the group thats part of MANHOOD. 3 it leads to favoritism. If you have a team with 8 true O Line bodies you can only realistically give 1 of them a shot to play off the line... How do you chose who that should be and how often? What about your backup skill position Players? Are they supposed to split reps with Jr Refridgerator Perry just so we can play to his emotions. God forbid. If he quits he quits good way to weed out the folks that dont really want to be a football player. Either way you got a new Sub outta me. Good shit. One thing I do is run plenty drills in individual time where they get to dummy in as a runner/rabbit behind the blocking scheme. Basically if you can block for a big guy the quick guys r gonna have a ball
