I snuck watched them in Louisville Kentucky because the local CBS affiliate would show it at 11:30. I was 13. I know it was in color, but I watched almost all of that in the black and white set that my grandfather had given me. That TV was important to me. It was a shitty old mass produced 1979 Admiral black and white set. It had been my grandfather and grandmother's first "second" TV. It was in their kitchen down in Murray Kentucky, and had stopped working. They still had their nice color TV, though! So they weren't worrying about replacing it. First I saw of the Admiral TV set was on the visit to the country. Grandfather and dad had arranged this ahead of time. They had been giving me working vacuum tube radios to play with before, but this was a TV. It was in granddaddy's shop, the backshell had been removed and the capacitors in the power supply powering the picture tube carefully discharged using sandbox resistors, so that they wouldn't hurt a little boy (me). I was 9. Granddaddy soldered the first replacement power lead on it, and then handed the soldering iron to me. My little hand soldered the second lead of the power cable to the back of the little TV. Granddad and dad put the cover back on, let me drive the screws, and that was my first TV. I happened to have watched all Dave Allen on that TV. Benny Hill was there, on an adjacent channel, but Dave Allen was more my speed. Storytelling, resorting to (expensive to film, by the BBC, doubtless) filmed sketches only when Allen's joke could be best told visually. Watching Dave Allen at Large prepped me for my introduction to the BBC Radio Series "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", which I, a Kentuckian, was able to tape off the FM radio something like just a year or two after Dave Allen was syndicated here, around 1981 when National Public Radio in the United States received permission from the BBC to broadcast them. But Dave Allen was first. His was my very first intro to British (Isles) television comedy. Dave, I'm in Kentucky, and a shot of bourbon in your memory, even though I know you never drank.
@@AlanCanon2222 I'm also from Louisville KY, I did the exact same. This was one of the great late night shows. My mom and dad never could figure out why I was always sleeping late and missing school.

Takes me back to Thurday nights in the saloon bar of the Latrobe Valley Hotel Morwell. The bar was packed from 8.30 to 9.30 old black and white TV. All of us just loved Dave Allen. A true gem of a man.
Dave Allen at Large was one of BBC-TV's better offerings especially for the normal folks who viewed The Goodies too juvenile and Monty Python offensive.

@@kevinbeck6785 thank you Kevin. Bless you.he was God's own comedian was Dave, he sure had a sense of humour. My ancestors were Southern Irish, we were O'Regain's going back many generations but was shortened to Regan in the 1800s. Been doing my family tree which turned out challenging as one of my G.Grandfather's x 4 were called Michael and there were hundred's to trail through. Have found easier way by going backwards from my dad, his dad and so on. Many came here during the potato famine in the 1840s and docked at Liverpool before dispersing all around the country, some went further afield like USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia where food was easier to obtain for their families, found that many died of starvation, such a shame how they were treated by the English, no wonder they don't like us. Can't say I blame them for doing so. Quite a few were my ancestors. 😪😪

How eerie it is to hear Dave talk about phone technology about how you'd be able to see the person u were talking to. It was inevitable I guess & we have come further still from this. Dave passed in 2005 so this was 15 years ago. Yes, Dave could be right TV will soon be two-way.

DAVE ALLEN, BRILLIANT. " And may your god go with you" 👏👏👏
this man was amazing, I remember my mum telling me the joke of the drunks in the grave yard, because I hadn't seen that first episode. Happy days
What a great talent. I hope he still making folks laugh in the next world like he did (&does) in this one. Cheers Dave!
comedian and a psychic, dave fortells the coming of camera phone!

Omg loved the show, wttw had to air this show when I was young!
This brings back memories! Thanks #JBC, you gave me a window to great television around the world. UA-cam you are now the Smithsonian of television history!
One can tell he loves the storytelling.
dave was a true genius of comedy when britain had some of the best comedians ever
Dave was Southern Irish and his humour was loved by so many of us who left to live around the world, he remind so many of them of the old country and their ability to tell a God story and joke. Next month my late, lovely dad would have been 91, I Will put Dave's shows on my laptop and sit with his photo and my late husbands to watch him together in remembrance. RIP to Dave and my lovely late Dad and husband who are keeping everyonè laughing in Heaven.❤❤❤
@@kimgrattage6049 Dave would have said, Goodnight and May your God go with you, very touching your lovely story. ❤❤❤
@@kimgrattage6049 Well done with finding out about your family tree, i remember watching a programme about the potato famine, i tried with my family tree but gave up, i live in North Wales, not far from Liverpool
@@kevinbeck6785 Where in North Wales. I always go there for my holidays. I live in Staffordshire.
I've been looking for these.
Thank you.
USSR was far ahead of the curve on TV's watching you, and radios that listen to you.
They moved up to elections and American Presidents.
I was too young to remember this episode but I recall the later 70's shows most. My Gran was a devout Catholic and used to disapprove sometimes but not enough not to watch.
Interesting to see that one of the makers of Kentucky Fried Movie seems to have seen Dave's "TV watching you" sketch, and "borrowed" it for their film!
This was the same year that I was born.
Obviously a great year.
Any kid born in 2020 will unfortunately, be unable to say the same.
Bloody brilliant comedy.
How eerie it is to hear Dave talk about phone technology about how you'd be able to see the person u were talking to. It was inevitable I guess & we have come further still from this. Dave passed in 2005 so this was 15 years ago. Yes, Dave could be right TV will soon be two-way.
and how now, our 'smart tv' IS listening to us
He would have made a fantastic 007 James Bond
Excellent!
He was 100% Wright about TVs watching you , If only I could go back in time and enjoy again never mind.
The first episode. I was dying to see it!! TY so much!😅
A genius, nowadays its just swearing
Thanks for sharing.
Best looking guy ever to get on the stand-up stage.
Brilliant. Comedian
