  • Today I helped a fellow Ham operator unload and set up his Johnson Desk Kilowatt. Yes, I wish it was mine. These are all time classics. Hard to find. Fun to operate. I will follow up with its first contact at Gary's QTH.

Now I see why certain pieces of ham radio gear is hard to find. Because some people have 5 or 6 of them wasting away on a shelf.

There is nothing quite as sad as a radio museum that (almost) no one ever sees. Okay, I'm just jealous. It's been over 30 years ago that I sold my Viking Valiant for one of them new fangled radios...and I have regretted it ever since. It's time to dust off those gems and let someone else experience the joy of running them old geezers. (Hint-hint)

Well....how about that. Some fellas collect cars...some do radios. No biggie. Car collectors don't drive their machines routinely. And ham operators don't run their collection routinely. Leave him alone. He is enjoying the things that bring him happiness...and he likely can well afford them. Good for him!! He is putting his money to work FOR HIMSELF...and for we who may work him and his collector piece.

I know this will hurt many who read it. From the early 70's through the end of the CB craze many people ran EF Johnson transmitters in my Brooklyn neighborhood. Most notably Arthur Artie Windjammer. who ran a EF Johnson Viking 500 (channel 15). other's like Scotty in Seagate Coney Island ran of valiant. of course those transmitters were never intended cb meters but, since they had that band on them, why not. Right?! I would occasionally stop by Windjammers house. He would turn the lights down remove the cover from the 500 power supply and those 811" s would give off purple glow as he modulated. Artie Windjammer was a legend and 3 States. the audio from that 500 was Second To None on CB. Those direct injection 20 kilohertz wide CB radios got nothing on A 500. how many people today on CB ever heard a EF Johnson. I would venture to say not many cber's never heard the type of (AM) audio a real AM transmitter like the famous EF Johnson series of boat anchors are capable of. I used to flip through old ham radio magazines and dream of one day owning an desk like the one in this clip. Windjammer gave many people memories that will never be forgotten. rip Windjammer.

I have a large a few radio but not to the extent that this guy does. Why would anyone have 5 of anything. Ham radios are not an investment no matter how many you have. Why not sell them so that they can be but on the air rather than collect dust in basement?

+Kevin Elliott I agree, I am in process of getting a few boat anchors out of here too. Need to use the funds to stock up on vintage amp repair parts

Kevin Elliott: I'm responding to a 2 year old post but what the hell. Kevin you obviously are not a Vintage Ham Radio collector or even a user of these big boats. It gets in your blood if you have a true love for these radios. And yes Kevin, if you buy right and are able to restore these radios a lot of money can be made . Look at the "as is" verses the fully "restored" radio prices on Ebay. Night and day. Look at the vast collection of cars Jay Leno has. Whats the difference here? To each his own my friend. 73
