  • Calving's in full swing now and the calves are coming in thick and fast.
    We haven't had the best start as we have had to get the vet out twice now in two days, and both times its been Emma.
    She's also just competed in the highly prestigious Young Farmer Of The Year contest and won so a massive congratulations to her!!

    Hey I’m Andrew The Once A Day Farmer, I farm alongside my father on my family dairy farm in New Zealand.
    Our Dairy system is quite unique as we only milk our 320 jersey cows Once A Day (hence the name), and they stay outside on grass for 365 days of the year!!

    Fascinating video, Andrew. 50 years ago I intended to become a vet and thru life circumstances and the way University Entrance was in those days I was told there was no use trying to enter Uni as a girl because only male students made it thru. I have been regretful of my decision to not push thru and try anyway to enter Massey Uni all those years ago. I watched this video with Emma and still feel that sadness that I didn’t become a vet.

      That’s such a shame Hillary! I don’t know exact figures but it seems like all we get is female vets at our local one now 🤷

    Congratulations Emma I listened to your interview on talkback - yes genetic gain is really important - less cow over time with the same amount of productions from a smaller herd - it does take many years to achieve

    I do love how a farmer and vet talk about the worst part of their job, it's live, it's death, look one died but there 99 over there alive, 99%happy, my vet last year was calving a cow,I think it's gone I think it's gone ,calf out it's alive ,my hero .thanks Willy

    There are few things more valuable to a dairy farmer than a good vet. Here in America large animal vets are getting scarce. More vets are doing pets, more money in it and better working conditions. Do you have anyone who would buy your unwanted heifer calves to raise for replacements?

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  11 місяців тому

      I don’t as of now, but hopefully as the herd gets better the calves will to do maybe I will find a market for them in the future

  • @stephenluciehome4778
    @stephenluciehome4778 11 місяців тому

    Lucky you being able to use Marbocyl. Banned here in the UK. Classed as a critically important antibiotic. Nothing as good to replace it.

    Hi Andrew do you keep the heifer calves from the 2 year old cows.

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  11 місяців тому

      No because we just run stock bulls over them, but next year we will since we’re going to ai them

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer

    Vet young farmer of the year and mum , sort of makes a guy feel a bit inadequate hu? Only jokin Andrew you’re doing a great job, best of luck with the rest of the calving. I wouldn’t hold out to much hope for the old girl with the pneumonia though she might live but is unlikely to get into milk again.

    Wish that the hole gender block BS in all skills and trade would just be a thing of the past. So much skill gone to waste because of stereotype thinking, and power domination battles for ages.

    You guys can still use Marbocyl we can't for human antibiotics resistance reasons yet New Zealand can export to the EU another example of double standard bureaucracy we have to deal with as farmer's in the EU, not have a go at you Andrew or new Zealand farmer's but at the bureaucracy which is getting worse every year here in Ireland, EU

      @TheOnceADayFarmer yeah I am not a believer in it ,can I ask what are you doing with the bull calves (if you don't want to answer that is OK )we here in Ireland have to keep live for 8 weeks costing around 300 euros and after the 8 weeks ???? Who knows
