Yeah, "Grape Jam" was a disaster compared to Their first release, "Moby Grape". I seriously like every song on their first album and love some of them. A lot is the song order on the first album I suppose.
I was lucky enough to see them live, headlining at the Cafe Au Go Go. Their opening act? Blood, Sweat & Tears, in their first ever live performance, many months before the first album.

But after the final song the announcer mentions that the tracks are being recorded for inclusion on their second album, not their first. So I don't know if it's the same show you saw.

Did you know that Moby Grape opened the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 !? But were not in the film... a shame. Have seen Jerry many times here in his hometown.... and he's still one of the greatest guitarists ever ! (Clapton's favorite) Type in "Jerry Miller 3-16-13"... to see Jerry just having fun at a local bar. We are lucky here to have such an amazing talent just hangin' out. Just a dude bein' a dude... and then you see and hear. Great stuff.

As Tacoma Paul said, the Grape opened the Monterey Fest in '67. It's great that the audio is floating around, but apparently there is film footage as well. (A clip from the Where Are They Now feature shows some footage with a credit "courtesy Adler/Pennebaker. Unfortunately, it didn't surface in the Criterion "Bonus Performances." The Grape still can't get a break!
Katz (p*ss be upon him) demanded one million bucks from the Monterey organizers before he'd give consent for the Grape to be filmed. Much like with "Don Alden" (thieving manager of Small Faces & other Brit 60s bands), groups who innocently signed on with Katz wound up poorer than when they started and in debt to boot.

I saw them live a couple of timesThis group along with Quicksilver Messager Service, Jefferson Airplane, The Greatfull Dead, Country Joe And The Fish, It's A Beautiful Day The Sons of Chaplin, (The Sons), Mad River, Big Brother and The Holding Company, With Janus Joplin), Cold Blood, and countless others, put San Francisco on the map, both musically and the epic socially. Now what is happening in the bay area is tragic, with the homeless. They have turned alot of the city into a third world country. Dirt, filth and shit on the sidewalks. Still, alot of the hi-tech jobs are still there. The difference between the two, is were most of the people are. The bay area is were I grew up, and in the 60s and 70s was the best place to live. Now, people are looking for a way to escape from there, and live in peace. The future for the bay area now is bleak. In ten years from now, I really wonder what the city will look like. Well it be safe and clean? It could go either way. I hope they fix the homeless problem and maybe the city will come to the its wonderful self. Time and politics will determine San Francisco fate. So fortunate to have had my older hipper cousin to show me the ropes.. Seen a whole mess of bands at the Fillmore, plus all those free outdoor concerts. My memory will always remember San Francisco back then, and how it was truly a very special place. Sorry that it has changed for the worst. My home town Detroit is no different, just like most major U.S. cities. Only one consolation, we lived through some of the best times this nation ever produced. Rock ()n David & good luck. I have the same issues, every time I come up with a band name and I check too make sure a band name is not taken. I had a good one called Sacred Flame. I did have the name which I thought of back in 1997, but soome one in 2014, took the name and I think they got paper work because it looks like a pretty popular band. i made Me mad, it's hard to come up with a good band name and i even try band name generator that does give good ideas for names but still even that is hard to actually do because I research and some where some one comes up with some thing. I had a good one the Earlier last month, Temple Garden, and some one had that too.

Weekly published a story about 8- 10 years ago about the Grape that said Skip had been diagnosed with Schizophrenia about 1969 or 1970 and that it was aggravated by drug use, infighting, and the manipulation by the Grape's manager who owned the right to the band's name. Yes, Skip was a genius, as were his bandmates. As a whole, the Grape was an outstanding example of the best and the worst of 60's Rock. God love 'em. They were the best!

I had a friend in art class who kept telling how great they were before their first album had even come out. The musicians were pretty talented, but they had no chemistry and were badly managed. They were the most overhyped band from that period. To say they were the best band from that period is simply ludicrous. Gary Duncan and John Cipollina, the Dead, Carlos, Steve Stills and the boys never had a night where they couldn't have blown this band off the stage.
So you have your taste and have decided to present that as an objective take on the relative merits of various musicians. Moby Grape at their best was not just a group of talented musicians but excellent songwriters as well. It didn't last very long in that form, and I have heard the same thing about terrible management. But don't start telling us the Dead were superior beyond endless noodling solos that would put me to sleep, and a cult following of accurately named Deadheads. Talk about an overhyped band. No one in their right mind would start making claims like Moby Grape was the best band of the period, but your claim about others blowing them off the stage is just as ludicrous.
Surf, you make some good points, and my opinion is subjective, but it is one I’m allowed to have and if stating it makes it objective than so be it. Was never a big Dead fan, but I would have have to admit that at moments they reached the heights. Quicksilver made some insipid shit at times too, but at times those blistering guitars defined the time and the place. Stills was on another level in that CSNY didn’t have as many wasted efforts. I wanted the Grape to be great. They weren’t. I’m sorry. It’s not that weren’t talented. In my opinion, they lacked the inner dynamic and collective sense of purpose. I’ve always felt that it was because they were thrown together rather than coming together organically. I’ll admit that my final statement was probably a little over aggressive but it wasn’t ludicrous. Yet, I never saw them life and there’s that.

First time I heard Three Dog Night was on Mike Douglas's show. I remember lots of great musicians on there like Roy Buchanan, Pete Fountain, etc.
He even had Zappa on in the early 70s when normie TV wouldn't touch FZ with a ten foot pole...

I suspect Matthew Katz was behind that. He was the one who ordered the cameras off during the show. God knows why.
The Association opened Mont.Pop on Friday evening, June 16. Moby Grape opened on Saturday evening, June 17.

Actually, this is May or June 1967. Their first LP had just been released... and Barbara Parkins (guest) had just appeared in Playboy.

Dead still touring. Starship released numerous first-rate albums and singles over 15 year stretch. Grape went nowhere but Jerry liked them.
Moby Grape were great but they didn't put the Dead and Airplane to shame. No one did.
