Because of this, Aizen's ascension to the throne directly impacted him and what backstory we get for this character highlights a surprisingly sympathetic villain. What did you think of Baraggan's backstory? Did it make him more interesting to you?
Yes, his story is kind of sad
I always wondered if we would see a part of his backstory explaining the scars on his face , like you said has he always been the king since the beginning , and if so who challenged his throne in his past giving him those scars ? Considering his powers must have been someone powerful to even land a hit on him .. twice by the looks of it

Well there’s nothing I can say you summed this up very perfectly as usual. All I have to say is Baraggan is the cranky old Grandpa who thinks he’s still relevant and even remain arrogant hence his ability Arrogante (hmm I swear I also just realized this impromptu connection as I’m typing this).
I still believe Aizen put him below Stark just to make him more salty.
I always respected Barragan due to his mentality when Tosen comments on his Palace lacking walls and a roof.

I appreciate you pointed out Aizen's first action when meeting Barragan was casting Kyoka Suigetsu. Aizen knows the level of threat he's dealing with. Sure Aizen is stronger, but this guy rules Hueco Mundo for so long, so no doubt this guy is powerful. Aizen's not taking risk.

One thing i find hilarious about baraggan is that his original hollow form was a skeleton so when aizen "arrancars" him baraggan has to grow skin for the first time in probably centuries which must have been so confusing 😂

Although to give a skeleton internal organs would line up with aizens constant middle finger to baraggan 😂
On a more serious note, baraggan is the only arrancar in aizens employ (that i can think of anyway) whos ressurection takes away from his current form, pretty much every espada gains something (grimmjows tail and claws, ulqiuorras wings and horns) but in baraggans case his arrancar form trully is a limiter to his true abilities the equivalent of gokus weighted clothing
@@loganalvarez2985 That’s the point tho. That goes for every Arrancar. They seal their true power in their Zanpakuto.
He saw himself as the all powerful god of Heuco Mundo, exerting his time themed abilities to get what he wanted. Then 3 strangers showed up and one of them stopped him dead in his tracks. His reduction to accomplice in Aizen's plan was quite the fall from grace. It's for the best that Harribel took up a lighter mantel of post Aizen/Barragan and now Ywach Heuco Mundo.
Maybe barragan would of been a problem for the stern ritter,seeing how they had problems with hollow energies.

@@c.glazercrush3994 yes the sternritters cannot counter his ability, tbh the espadas and arrancars are the counter to the sternritters. Shinigamis counter arrancars Hollows and espadas and they counter the quincies and the quincies can counter the shiniganis.
Baraggan had an entire kingdom that we know almost nothing about.
Characters like Ikomikidomoe are mentioned as being old rivals at one point, and we keep getting teased with mentions of older hollows like that.
He feels tragic to me just because of the entire lost feeling that comes with his history.
Iko fkin overconsumed hollows for god knows how long and a lot he gluttonous also it goes show barragan only lost is because his own broken power killed him also I wonder who put iko in sword is maybe 0 squad and help of 1st generation squads maybe

As I noted in my own comment, I'm curious of Barragan's residence pre-world splitting as he was ancient even in the pre-history. Not only that but how'd he take control of Hueco Mundo? A entire dimension (and HM seems to be an endless plain possibly, but at least planet sized) gets created on purpose, its not like the people who created it are going to just be like 'meh that dimension? we don't really care what happens there'. No, I suspect there would have been a power struggle and/or maybe being a early Vastro Lorde or THE 1ST ONE he got put in charge by 5 noble houses. They did a lot of questionable stuff in the era, so I wouldn't be surprised.

Every time I see Barragan, I am always reminded of Metallica's "King Nothing". I think it may be due to the fact that he is a king ruling over literally an empty world whose vanity is his own downfall, but I find the song so fitting for him, even musically

As someone who has loved the series since its beginning,I am happy to see there are those like you out there who give everything in the series a chance regardless of its flaws and small moments.
Thank you for your commitment to the series, whereas I feel most people nowadays merely get on the bandwagon of a new series and jump ship once a series loses traction.
This will always be my favourite series - I can talk about it for days!
Baraggan's back story gave him much needed development.
Baraggan's hatred for Aizen makes sense.
Baraggan's design made me think that this was what the shinigami should've looked like and Shuheis released Zanpakuto is what the standard Zanpakuto is supposed to have looked like.
One of my favorite espada, if not my favorite.
I think I only like Starrk and Szayel slightly more, but it's pretty stacked.

I actually feel saddest for espada Barrangan and Starkk.

Barrangan and Starkk even though being hollow are not necessarily evil.
Barrangan was there keeping strong hollows in line as the king of Hueco mundo.
And Starkk just wanted friends and allies who can be with him.
Aizen used these two without considering their emotions and feelings
I love his ressurection and ability so much. its simple but plain deadly. also, one of my favorite things in bleach is the hollow evolution process and the resurrection of arrancars and espadas, and how it makes them grow more powerful but also makes them look more smiliar to their hollow form. Id love to see a video about those aspects
Very interesting video. Baraggan is definitely an over looked character and I think his character design is one of the best out of the espada. Would’ve loved to have seen more of him in the series. The allegory of time was definitely very interesting, especially how he is subject to the effects of his own powers in a symbolic way. Thanks for the video!
Makes you wonder how strong Barragan could be if he had Segunda Etapa (Second Release). The Bleach Author Kubo recently confirmed that all the Espada could attain 2nd Release forms if they actually trained hard enough.
I always loved Barragan, but was always disappointed how he was handled in the Karakura Town arc. Having Stark and Barragan basically being the Apex of Hollows felt wrong to me considering how they are taken care of by a cheapshot of Shunsui, and Soifon and Barrier cheese. I always wanted more Hollow development after Ulquiorra's backstory.
I think Barragan's death was actually quite thematic.
He's the Espada of aging, in other words change, yet he desperately clung onto the past glory, and in the end it was his own power, the power of change, that did him in.
@@daanduijkers4845 i dont disagree, i do think his death fits the theme of his character, but just cuz it fits the theme doesnt mean it wasnt also disappointing. between his submission to aizen, and dying to his own hubris, as the king of all hollows he was lackluster to me.
I like that filler with op enemy where his weapon was dual blade in one and him spinning it either reverse time for a moment or reflect and attack
If Stark fought a different Captain he definitely woulda done better, and its sad Shunsui didn't even have to use his bankai to defeat him.
4:08- yeah for me, I was half expecting a dinosaur/bear/generic dangerous powerful animal release that would be dangerous, but would eventually be defeated when reading for the first time and not finding him engaging due to being a grumpy prick. However, his release of being a Royal Lich made him vastly more engaging, his powers being unique in the context of the manga I read at the time, his contradictory philosophy of being immortal/everything ends and being ultimately destined to be casted aside by a man who barged in out of nowhere, forced him into a role without his consent, led to him being surprisingly pitiful and leading to me lamenting his loss.

His sealed form is an old man (which is used to represent death in many places) and his resurrection is a grimm reaper like being.
Absolutely - In many ways, it's things like this that make me think he should've been given more prominence overall.
I genuinely think if barragan used respira on aizen, he wouldnt have much of a counter for it. Aizen deals in illusions and such, and dont get me wrong aizen is incredibly powerful, but he wouldnt have any way really of getting through barragans respira
Depends if he could cancel out Barragan's abilities with his raw spiritual pressure. Since we know if someone has enough spiritual power, they can negate attacks from enemies.
I'm so glad you uploaded this video, i feel like he got a really raw deal when it came to aizen's servitude of him, as he was the king of hueco mundo, but then he was basically ousted and forced to serve aizen, or basically be destroyed by aizen.
Anyone else think Barragan was stronger than Stark, but Aizen didn't want to make him the #1 Espada so that's why he's #2?
Definitely not, starrk had more reiatsu than barragan, hence, he was made the Primera. Your plot point was never hinted at in the canon story at all.
Artydomi power scaling the Espada is almost impossible. Baraggan's Respira ability is pretty OP but the general consensus is that they are ranked by amount of spiritual pressure. In that regard, I can see how Stark is ranked number 1 overall and Baraggan is number 2. But there are plenty of outliers. Where does Ulquiorra's second release factor into the ranking? What about Yammy's 0 rank?
Yeah, and probably only to mock him. Barragan is the "king" and is "the strongest" and supposed to be Nr. 1 Espada, so it makes sense that Aizen takes his title away from him and makes him weaker by giving him number 2. The ultimate punishment
no. stark could pretty much endlessly fire ceros due to the amount of spirtual pressure he has and he is the fastest espada. barragan is weak to blast stronger than him. or being hit by his own respira. stark definitely stronger and would beat him in a fight pretty easily being able to get away from barragans respira and just blasting him with an endless amount of ceros.
Stark existence alone caused fodder hollows to die. Barragan is surrounded by fodder hollows but every hollow seems fine. Hence in terms of Reiatsu Stark outdoes Barragan and the ranking is based on the Reiatsu of the Espada.
I think Baraggan should’ve killed Soi Fon. It would’ve added to his fear factor and to the fear factor of the Espada.
I think what really kinda completes the theme of "nothing lasts forever" is that even he when exposed to his own power dies.

Agreed - Harribel and Nel in charge means Hueco Mundo has a chance to really become a better place.
I don't think respira works on people with more reiatsu than Barragan. That is why Stark was no1 and Aizen was not worried about it.
And Izen was the one who gave respira to barragan I don't think stark was given any thing

I keep commenting everywhere about how amazing the Bleach soundtrack is including the early OPs and especially the Spanish guitar in the Arrancar Arc and Hueco Mundo. Would love to see your take on the soundtrack of Bleach and what it added to the Anime and also your favourite pieces.
I recall you talking about how Bleach influenced your art style and your drawing etc, somewhat like that the soundtrack has really inspired me to try to learn many of the pieces in it.

Hopefully when the anime returns it includes Can’t Fear Your Own World and has more ancient Hueco Mundo and Baraggan backstory flashbacks when they introduce the hollow in Hikone’s Zanpakutō.
If/when Burn the Witch crosses over into the Bleach universe, who do want or think the Bleach character should be that bridges the two?
I think it should be Chad visiting London for a pro boxing match he’s in, and he meets Ninny who is hired to perform a song during before his boxing match. Wherein a dragon or something attacks and Chad surprises Ninny by helping her and having powers she’s never seen before.
I thought we might see either Kyoraku or Nanao representing the Gotei as members of the 1st Division, personally!
Barragan was always really Ineresting to me. I felt he was under used. I thought it would have been cool if he fought Yamamoto.

The espada numbers seem to disregard abilities and just go off of raw spiritual pressure so start being the Primera can be reasoned as he just has more spiritual pressure
Starrk fought FOUR senior captains, two of them captain commander candidates and the other two are vizards. He was handling them all low difficulty and only lost to hax that his opponent couldnt have used without others buying time.
Barragan on the other hand bullied a low tier captain who had already been damaged and some vice captains. He took significant damage from just firepower, the thing his superior Starrk specializes in. Barragan is really overrated for a guy who didnt amount to much.
And if we recall what we learned in that arc, OP abilities like Soifon's shikai can be rendered useless against opponent's with far greater spiritual pressure. So if we want to throw around speculation, its possible Baragan's abilities wouldn't work on Stark because of that.

Baraggan is one of the coolest and probably strongest Espada. Stark is just number 1 as an insult to Baraggan really. The symbolism of him forever being second best
Stark is "stronger", as is Yammy and segunda entopa Ulquiorra... But Barragan's ability would let him beat all 3.

He's my favourite Espada and I think just like all the espadas (except maybe Ulqiorra) Kubo did him dirty. My biggest problems of the espadas is that they didn't kill anyone.. and he was the most classic to one to do so.. he should have killed Omaeda and Soi Fon.. besides this I'm among those people who think he beats Stark and deserve number 1 but Aizen trolled him..
How did Barragan "escape the abyss of death" and attain the beyond resurrection form? People keep telling me that, "he died." But so did Halibel and Halibel came back? I want Barragan back. I'm thinking that either: 1.) Respira wipes things out of existence completely so he couldn't come back and the beyond resuccion form is just a video game thing, or 2.) Barragan came back but was too "arrogant" to reclaim rule over Hueco Mundo after being defeated twice [pride is a terrible trait]. What do you think?

Again too late for this, but it's interesting that Barragann didn't have at least one vasto lorde at his side or as a subordinate. If he has been ruling for so long I wonder how was his approach to such powerful hollows even if they are few in number and not that common.
The vasto lorde in general is something that I feel Kubo didn't explore enough but well, things happen.

Great video, Barragan is intriguing and it’s thanks to Kubo giving him a bit of story and character. I always wondered about the time Aizen, Gin, and Tousen visited him, and wonder what was the actual purpose to Aizen showing up. Sure, Barragan was “King” of HM but to what end, what extent? Was it sure that if Aizen set up shop in HM that he knew one way or another that he’d have to deal with Barragan eventually, or did Aizen simply want to recruit him? I feel as if the former could have lead into the latter. Also, what did Aizen allow Barragan to see and not see since he was confirmed to be under Kyoka Suigetsu? I’ve always wondered about these things.
Anyway it seemed to me that Hacchi understood what significance Barragan once had, and gave him a slight nod of tribute after sending Respira back his way and subsequently made age age. (I was disappointed that this ended up being all we would get from Hacchi btw but that’s another topic... ) I also always thought it was interesting that he had the most (most named Fraccion anyway, Szayel technically had more I think) and the strongest Fraccion, perhaps a nod to his days leading armies of hollows, hell he could have been planning an eventual coup using some of these guys. He had an absolutely amazing design as well, one of the most properly “evil” looking characters in Bleach, also one of the most badass with his Axe and crown during resurreccion .
Honestly would Aizen be able to beat all the shinigami and Espada at the same time if they turned on him in their primes?
Probably not to be honest, I think he'd get destroyed haha
@@MrTommo2304 If they where under the effect of Kyoka Suigetsu Aizen would just have made them kill one another and the last person standing would probably be in bad shape and easy to finish off. Kyoka Suigetsu is just stupidly op and only reason Ichigo was able to win was that Aizen decided not to use it on him.
To be fair the only threat to Aizen is Yamamoto and he would have a bigger chance of winning 1 vs 1 then if all ganged up on him as Aizen can just use them to wither him down. The question is how much does Aizen know about Yamamotos bankai? If Aizen went in for a sneak attack while Yamamoto has his bankai aktivated it is possible Aizens zanpakuto would get destroyed by Zanka no Tachi: West and thus breaking the hypnosis allowing Yamamoto to easily destroy Aizen. Or if he got a lucky hit on Aizen by Zanka no Tach: North by randomly attacking in all directions. But knowing that Aizen is extremely patient and clever he would just wait for Yamamoto to drop his bankai before attacking as Yamamoto can't keep it up for long without destroying everything around him including himself.
And this is base form Aizen, with the Hogyoku its impossible to beat him as it provides him with immortality + infinite power up. The only way to beat him at this point is a Deus ex Machina plot twist or possibly Yhwachs The Almighty but even then its debatable.

It couldve been Heuco couldve been multiple kingdoms with different warlords. Each vasto lorde was a leader of their territories and one of the reasons why their arent as many of them is that they kept fighting and killing eachother. Barrangan ruined court couldve just been a territory he took and allowed it to just crumble apart after he completely took over and had no opposition so he became bored. This explain why he has an army for no reason.
Like most of the other Espada I really wanted them to flesh why they were following Aizen in the first place , I remember when Ichigo and co met the first Hollow in Hueco Mundo and they talked about how Aizen was the man with no fear and then the clear colonialism metaphor with Aizen what would hollow identity mean if there is such a thing
Barragan was the perfect character to pay that off

Tite Kubo should've made this man equal to what an Espada #1 equal to what he would've been if he gained 53 months prep by using Aizen's chair for 17 months and then training in Nan Madol

Nan Madol would've given an Espada, Soul Reaper, Bount, Fullbringer, or yes even a Quincy 100 years worth of training in just one day without them aging at all
(their appearance stays the same)!
Then at full power Barragan's power would've increased by 100 fold

Aizen's seizure of Hueco Mundo could be an allegory for European colonialism. Especially given the notion that Shinigami view Hollows as "less than". Even the "new world" aspect and act of "bringing civilization" hints at this.

Underdeveloped Espada, why did Kubo rush when handling this character? why didn't other characters use Bankai against this ancient entity?

More spiritual pressure doesn't cancel abilities. Aizen just caused suzumibachi to fail because it has to pierce you to count. Just like kenpachi and ichigo. The gap in power meant the blade didn't cut his flesh. Which effectively means her ability can't trigger.
If spiritual pressure can cancel abilities, then Gin's bankai would not of been able to dissolve an ascended aizen AND certainly Nanana would not be able to knock Aizen out with one little attack in the TYBW.

14:30 im glad im not the only one who thinks this, indeed im pretty sure barragan is actually the strongest espada, even when counting ulquiorra and yammi, however he gave him #2 anyway just to piss him off even more and degrade him.
