    Hear me out but run the drain to the pond outside then run an overflow from pond to a bog filter. I know it sounds like alot of work but it would alow you to grow certain things and make tge pond look even better

      Well in freezing weather joey would have to insulate the waste pipe out side anyways so would make more sense if he done it into the pond but be able to divert in the winter months

      I would do through the bog filter first, before going into the pond, as the water would be used water, so let the bog plants take out the Nitrates (NO3) first.

      it would probably be better to route it to a garden watering system or a green house since its nova scotia. dunno if Tamara is a gardener or not, but would certain make for a healthy garden, you could always route it out to water the yard too, though im not sure how much he wants to mow lol.

    have you considered how much your well can take? 20 galllons at a time, all the time might tax your water in the summer or long term. do you have any gear to monitor the level of your well? maybe its just the same volume you were originally doing.
    as for uses, you could pump it out to your lawn, although you might not want to exchange time doing water changes to mowing.
    alternatively you could pump it out to a garden or a green house if T has a green thumb.

    Can I just say this right here and right now... when I learned from Joey about automatic water changes like 10+ years ago... it has made my life as a fish keeper so so much easier. No honestly. My only regret is that I can only do it on my 300 gal tank and not on 3 of my 75s but I will take that as a small victory.

    What about any disease/ parasite outbreaks? Surely if you are connecting all the tanks together, an outbreak in one will spread to all of the tanks and threaten all the stock rather than just one tank’s inhabitants.

    I would drill one more overflow into the sump a little higher than the current one, just incase something clogs the overflow. Also, flood sensors. Can never been too careful.

    Ive been doing this type of filtration since i watched your drip system. I have a 180 reef tank. I ran a drip line up through my floor to one overflow with my heater in it, which also has a power filter pulling heated water from the overflow to the tank. And then my other overflow runs to the basement for my waste water. I have not done a water change in years! I have substrate so i do give that a cleaning about twice a year though.

  • @Richard_Nottage
    @Richard_Nottage Рік тому

    I have had a water change system going for years similar to this
    I use a well from my garden and pumped it though an RO system which then flows into a re-mineralisation chamber and then in to my tank, (you may want to think about a pre heater if your changing large amounts).
    From the sump it the drains into my pond (it will help in winter and you will find the fish gather round the outlet as its warm water).
    As i change alot of water my nitrates in my tank are minimal so there is no effect on the pond.
    I then i have a pump in the pond to water the garden with and then the fish tank tops the pond up, you will need to add a drain to the the pond, for the winter months.
    I ran mine ever hour for 15 mins 24 hours per day at 0.41 litres per minute to give it time from re mineralisation and to warm it up and that worked out to a 50% water change per week.

    I have a very similar setup for my 120g planted tank. I open up a solenoid valve for my RO unit for certain amount of time each day. Only challenge has been remineralizing the water. The low solubility make it challenging to use a dosing pump even though I have magnetic stirrers in my dosing containers. Haven't found a way to automate dry dosing of chemicals. But automated water changes save me so much time, I could never go back.

    • @gill998
      @gill998 Рік тому +1

      Abs is (generally) not rated for potable water use. I also wonder about the garden hose, most potable garden hose is white, but I know of at least one brand that is green, flexzilla, which that one does not seem to be. 🤷‍♂️

    • @gill998
      @gill998 Рік тому +1

      And it's odd to me that he used pvc, which is potable, for the drain to outside, but (very likely) non potable abs for water going back into the tank...

    • @ezwaters5847
      @ezwaters5847 Рік тому

      @@gill998 I'm not aware of any locally available abs that is considered potable which is why I'm curious. If it works for his fish, then it will open up some options in my fishroom.
      On the topic of garden hoses, I've been using them for filling tanks for a few years now in our fishroom with no ill effects. Have just been using the cheapest medium duty option available. Although recently found out that princess auto carries a white garden hose referred too as 'marine grade' which is supposed to be rated as potable.

    Something to note,
    Just my 2 cents
    Should the valve get stuck open, the room temperature wouldn't cope with the constant cold water feed going in.
    Also the pipe leading outside could freeze up especially where you are and potentially end up backing the water up into the system so worth insulating as it's not a constant flow

    You could be doing this even cheaper (just a little tbh) but if you, instead of using the garden planter system you could have bought an solenoid valve with some sort of smart home switch that you can put in a wall outlet. I have done this for my pond, the solenoid valve was I think a little under €30 and I used a Sonoff basic wireless switch which was €15. Combined its not much cheaper then the Garden system however you would have full control of the system from anywhere in the world as long as you have a internet connection. I absolutely love this system as it makes my pond maintenance a lot easier.
