The Jallianwala Bagh massacre
also known as the Amritsar massacre
was a tragic incident that took place on April 13, 1919, in the Jallianwala Bagh public garden in Amritsar
Punjab, India, during the British colonial rule.
At that time, a large gathering of peaceful protesters, including men, women, and children, had gathered in the garden to participate in a protest against the British government's oppressive policies. The protest was led by local leaders who were demanding an end to the British occupation of India and the release of political prisoners.
However, the British colonial government, under the command of General Reginald Dyer, ordered the troops to open fire on the unarmed and innocent crowd, killing hundreds of people and injuring thousands of others. The shooting continued for about ten minutes, and the victims were mostly trapped in the narrow alleyways and could not escape.
The Jallianwala Bagh massacre was widely condemned both in India and around the world, and it became a turning point in the Indian freedom struggle. The incident sparked outrage and led to widespread protests against the British government's oppressive policies in India. It also helped to galvanize the Indian independence movement, which eventually led to India's freedom from British colonial rule in 1947.
The Jallianwala Bagh massacre is considered a tragic and shameful event in Indian history, and it serves as a reminder of the brutalities and injustices inflicted upon the Indian people by the British colonial rulers.
