A therapeutic method known as Patterning is available through the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential .

In this therapy, the child lies on a table while others move his/her arms and legs in a way that is said to stimulate brain activity. It uses, among other techniques, passive and repetitive movement to teach correct motor patterns.

In this video, Hulet Smith (Occupational Therapist/far left) and Megan Smith (Physical Therapist/middle) use the method on their daughter, Sophia, who has Cerebral Palsy.

The couple attended sessions at the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential which instructs on the proper way to perform this type of therapy.
This video clip is for educational purposes only.
Patterning should always be done under the supervision of a professional who has had proper training.

I did patterning just like this with my son 30 years ago. He had many physical problems and his eyesight at age 5 was 20/200, he was legally blind. after several weeks of doing the patterning we visited his ophthalmologist and his vision was 20/40. For the first time he could cross the midline with his eyes. He had many physical and mental breakthroughs so we continued to do it for several years. I cannot praise this therapy enough. It changed my son's life.

@@viriginiateran3211 Thanks for asking! He's 36 now, he walks and runs, yes he speaks! He has oral motor aphasia so it's not perfect but he can hold a valid conversation. He is a beautiful, compassionate young man who can now express himself thanks in large part to the patterning (and many caring professionals!). AND, glasses help but they're not necessary!

When I was perhaps 17- 22 yrs old, my mother was a assistant helping with patterning for a person. One day she asked me to accompany her. Maybe one of the assistants couldn't do the patterning work that day. Anyway. I remember helping . I had forgotten until I read a post about the therapy method today. Then it all came back to me.

My mother used The Institute for Achievement of Human Potential method on both me and my sister. I was born with FFU and I have dyslexia. If it hadn't been for patterning like this I would have never learned to crawl or walk. My sister graduated high school at 12 yrs old. My sister is married and is in the Air Force. She has a degree in child and human services. I graduated high school at 18 years old. I'm a CNA and I'm married. Both me and my sister plain on using it with our kids.

this study showed that the claims of this intervention being superior than standard practices are unsubstantiated. Parent satisfaction is significantly higher, and perceived outcomes are much higher than objective outcomes. This method incorporates the parents into the intervention, which basically makes the parent a therapist. Because they are a part of the process, they become incredibly bias and perceiving higher outcomes than are actually happening. This is all anecdotal, without scientific, peer reviewed literature to prove the claims.

I remember in the 1960 mums from our church worked for hours with an infant who had no swallow suck reflex they used sugar water and moved on to peanut butter at a older age. They massaged and did patterning movements the and baby eventually learned to crawl. The mum was forever grateful for the teams never ending work. I wonder to this day how that sweet boy is and inspired by the mothers persistence to get any help she could. That poor baby was tube fed for months and the rejoicing while reserved due to the conservative mainline church respectabilities at the time is something I will never forget as he successfully took his first bottle and the first-time he held his head up and looked around on his own.

It would appear that all of the negative comments on this video come from people with no experience with developmental movement skills and all of the positive comments come from those who have benefitted from it or seen its value. Wouldn't it be nice if only people who understood what they were talking about would comment?

Yes, psychologists have little understanding of physiologic therapies, and the critical literature comes from psychology. The Sparrow and Zigler article is a fraud because the top third of the data from the better progress was excluded. Ideological war by behaviorists caused great harm in the physiological therapy area. The critics are highly biased.

I read the book "A Boy Called Hopeless" when I was in elementary school, and recently remembered it, ordered a used copy, and looked up The Institutes. One thing that seems fishy is that the syndromes they claim to treat are almost all misspelled on their website. Do you really find this helpful? Do you have to do it 24/7?

though you asked 4 years ago, maybe I can shed some light for someone coming across it now. To answer that question, No. Once a day is not worth it probably at all. I did it as a one of many volunteers , for a boy of 3 or 4 years old, when I started helping on the team. I answered an ad the parents had placed at the grocery store...... The boy had been brain damaged as an infant, by the babysitter in what is called Shaken Baby Syndrome. I did see improvements in the boy , during the time I had with them , up until they relocated. I wish I knew how he is today as this was years ago.

My kid is 2 year olds, any recommendation on the frequency of the exercise? How many time per day? 20 time per set?

    • @Ee112144
      @Ee112144 5 років тому

I am not an expert but I have attended the course and is helping my child.
For all training to be most effective, there are 3 key factors: duration, frequency and intensity.
Duration: 5min per set is better than 1 minute per set
Frequency: 10 times a day is better than 2 times a day
Intensity: uninterrupted movement is better than child struggling and not cooperating
      Regarding your main question:
Maximise the 3 factors but the limit will be revealed by factor 3; when your child hate it. Don't cross the limit because you would want cross patterning for a long haul.

Why would you do this to your child??? Can't you hear the child cry out in pain at the end???!!!!! Not to mention that this has been discredited so many times now it's laughable. This has been discredited literally for the last 55 years in a row. Nonstop. By everyone who has researched it. The only ones claiming that it works is the institute that developed at themselves. Why would you do this to your child if another child is viewed crying out in pain while it is being done???!!! You should be investigated for child abuse!!!

It is a discredited scientifically disproven way of trying to change the outcomes of severely brain-damaged children. It has been discredited for 50 years it does not work it causes possible negative effects. The child pictured here cries out in pain at the end. She is a healthy child who has a voice. She is also a willing participant more than willing if you look at the beginning of the video her body language and facial expression indicate that she is quite proud of herself that she is participating seeing as how in that era cameras motion picture or video cameras were very rare except for home movie cameras and those were even rare. This child was quite delighted with herself that she managed to be in front of a camera and have her movements recorded so that she could watch them later. You can see it in her face. She's not faking she's not exaggerating she's not trying to get attention. She's doing this because it hurts. And she is wondering you can see in her face the confusion you can see when she cries out in pain and they stop you can see the confusion in her face as to why they would do this to her and why they would do this to any child it all is very obvious when you look at the expression on that child's face at the very end of the video😮😢😮😢😮😢😮😢😮😢😮😢😮😢

When I was a child this type of patterning was used on a 4 year old girl who had experienced brain damage due to oxygen deprivation during birth. Both parents were lawyers and the mother was especially a very well-to-do divorce lawyer and so they had plenty of resources and could rope in the volunteers because of course every woman wants to be friends with a divorce lawyer a high-powered divorce lawyer who can possibly help her and owes her a favor. Well guess what happened? Within a year of the kid was dead from her many many physical disabilities that went along with the mental disabilities because that's what happens when your brain gets oxygen cutoff to it while you were being born. The patterning did absolutely nothing. All of the dietary stuff they had her rigidly adhere to did absolutely nothing & she wound up dying. She never ever even learned to roll over. The stuff was based on a very simple hypothesis which seemed possible at the time but has been disproven. I repeat it has since been disproven does no good. 0 positive effect and even has possible negative effects.

But correlation does not mean causation. Your brother could have achieved this without the patterning. There is no controlled studies of this technique to show that the outcomes were any better than someone who didn't have the treatment. Oh and I had this treatment in the early 70's as a one year old because I crawled late. No evidence to say it helped me finally crawl.
