      I know this is kinda random, but could u react to the two trailers of Lotm (Lord of the Mysteries)
      You probably haven't heard of it, but to quickly sum it up : It is a Chinese Web novel getting a donghua (Chinese anime) adaptation with quality (in my opinion) surpassing some things studio ufotable has done (if the trailers are any kind of indication of how well it's gonna be animated) such as demon slayer and fate etc.
      Nott only in pure animation but also story and plot (which I can say after having fully binged it)
      if you watch these two trailers you're gonna see what I mean in context to the great animation, and you could maybe - if voted - watch it after monster etc., when it releases next summer.
      And also to possibly convince you to give the trailers (and a Chinese anime) a chance I can say that it is confirmed through reliably sources, that it will have 5 SEASONS - Yes you heard me right 5 SEASONS - (IT'S THE WHOLE LOTM STORY- 1400 chaps, which were announced before the first ep even officially dropped (As an indication to how amazing it is).
      The first ep was also shown to a select few people in China to review it etc, and they all gave it great reviews, for example how the anime follows the novel nearly word for word (which is very often just not the case sadly).
      It is also the most known novel in China with a VERY BIG Fan base (that just isn't as high in western countries) winning awards and even having live events which speaks for itself.
      PS:
      I will probably paste it under every new monster episode while enjoying the rewatch of one of my all-time favorites.
      If you see this, I don't want to pressure you into anything, but you can probably guess that for someone like me to write all this that I have the needed conviction that it will be great (at the very least, because LOTM is my all-time fav piece of fiction)
      PS(2):
      Short summary from the wiki because I can't properly articulate myself on such things :
      “In the waves of steam and machinery, who could achieve extraordinary? In the fogs of history and darkness, who was whispering? I woke up from the realm of mysteries and opened my eyes to the world. Firearms, cannons, battleships, airships, and difference machines. Potions, divination, curses, hanged-man, and sealed artifacts… The lights shone brightly, yet the secrets of the world were never far away. This was a legend of the “Fool”. “
      PS(3) :
      If you decide to watch the trailers, then look up the versions with English sub (or fan sub) for better experience

    I always took the message of this episode as your crimes are not the person you are. There can be circumstances in which good people do something bad, but they aren't suddenly a horrible person.

    I also love such slower-paced episodes made as a separate story, loosely connected to the main plot and yet not fillers, it's fantastically done 💯

    01:44 Paper maps. Can't they just use GPS? Ah right. This takes me so far back...
    05:05 The man is not just a retired cop, he seems to be quite an observant one. He was probably quite good at his job.
    11:54 Overlord had a knack of building up side characters for each small arc, but Monster really goes the extra mile by building up side characters for single episodes.
    As for the old man saying that "do it too long and you can't do it anymore", this communicates something personal.
    23:00 Like do it too long and you start to see your own mistakes, your own biases.
    In contrast, Lunge is not yet at the stage of doubt. He's still too proud to see the errors he makes, too self-centered to see past his own self-satisfaction in solving a case. I think this british ex-cop is there to show the difference, and possibly hint at Lunge's character development.

    I like the contrast between this retired guy and Lunge's perspective on Tenma

    man, Tenma is one of those characters where I'm just delighted every time I see him. like when he first starts talking to the couple here and has to switch languages for them... he just seems so kind all the time, I'm so attached.
    and he needs to be that way for this episode to work. everything about this episode comes together to paint a brilliant picture. we have this retired cop who doesn't trust his intuition anymore. he and his wife pick up a suspicious pair of hitchhikers on the side of the road, and instantly you can see the man start to observe and calculate in his head. is Tenma a good person? can he tell just by observing him? he seems nice, he has a kid with him, the kid seems happy, he comes back for them when they run out of gas... he's scrutinizing Tenma, but he can't find anything wrong. his wife calls this a bad habit, but really, it's a lack of fulfillment. a lack of closure.
    all throughout the episode, we watch this very sweet couple try to seem cheerful and invested in their vacation while gently skirting around the tender topic of their son. it feels like maybe he died... like there's a tragedy at the center of it all. but then the episode twists this by revealing that their son is a killer. and not only does it make sense of this man's shaken faith in his intuition, but it also reframes their grief. you're expecting the tragedy of their son being dead, but instead their sadness comes from knowing the grief their son has caused. whatever you thought this couple was feeling is actually reserved for the victim... and these two are dealing with the reality that they raised a person who could do such a thing. they really are sweet people, so this hurts them immensely.
    Monster isn't overbearing... it just presents scenarios, and people, and feelings, and lets them be as they are. the message accumulates naturally. last episode, we saw an ex assassin who stopped killing when he noticed the humanity of his victims. now we're seeing the perspective of people who care about a killer. it all ties into what Nina and Tenma have both resolved to do. Johan uses people as tools, kills indiscriminately, and we see him as cruel for it. I think it is also one of Johan's cruelties, that he is driving Tenma and Nina toward a path that will stain their hands with blood.
    becoming a killer is against their nature. it's hard to quantify what's really at stake if they go through with this... but through these little vignettes, the series paints us a picture of what that might be.

    They really do such an amazing job writing characters who are introduced mid series and feels like we got to know them for multiple episodes. Such a great episode too. And I'm sure you are worried about Dieter, but I'm glad he's with Tenma again at least not with that "Carpet Guy" just gonna call him that cause he was so sketchy! 😂Loved your commentary and reactions Luke!

    I'm gonna drop a spoiler warning for you Luke, but uhhh Monster is going to continue giving you these wonderful little drops into character lives and telling beautiful short stories. They don't always progress the main story, but they address the idea of being a monster in some form or fashion. This is why this show always will have a special place in my heart

    This is my favorite episode of Monster. It's just so good!

  • @Folkmoot

    I thought this episode was deeper into the show, I haven't revisited this episode so I didn't really catch some of the foreshadowing that the husband knew, like him saying "he's not sure he's a good person" etc. etc.. I obviously noticed that he might've been onto Tenma but I didn't know he actually knew the whole time till the end. The early foreshadowing scenes are very clear in hindsight, as to what he's thinking. Really great episode, Monster might be all time favorite show, it just nailed everything for me. There are definitely series I like as much as it, but something about all the elements of Monster makes it just such a well rounded and unique show. I need to check out Urusawas other works, he's one of the best to ever do it.
    Edit: the big piece of this episode I remembered was that there son was a murderer and that they were struggling with that. After watching the reaction I really appreciate, more so than before, how well set up that resolution is throughout. Like all the dialogue is obviously in hindsight all hinting at the reason they are there (there son being a muderer, but to them still there son), the husband saying that he can't tell the innocent from the guilty anymore etc. etc.. This episode is INSANELY GOOD, I completely overlooked it.

      Some people criticize Monster for its pacing or argue that it should have been shorter, especially when episodes like this one (9, 18 also) don't directly progress the plot. I think that's nonsense, as these episodes are deeply connected to the core themes and messages of the show and are brilliantly written.

    Most animes: Develop characters over several episodes or even seasons, and still fail in some of them
    Naoki Urasawa: Build a short term character in only an episode and they are still memorable although they are not seen again
