He just needs to have a role that is so unexpected and captivating that it would guarantee him a nomination and a possible win.
He literally did just that in There Will Be Blood! Yeah he was young and newer on the scene but still, should have been nominated at least
But that's the problem with actors and actresses with a huge range: nothing is unexpected. They're underrated in a weird way
Right on the nose, yes!
This could be a peer reviewed paper

Paul Dano's performance in There Will Be Blood is incredible. Definitely should have got him at least nominated. He's reliably great in everything I've seen him in to be honest. I think you covered most of his career highlights - it must only be a matter of time before he's undeniable for a nomination and possible win.
Thanks, Michael! Let’s see how he is in Dumb Money later this year!
He was really great in his small scene in looper. You really empathize with what's essentially just a throw away character for the plot.
I just watched the 2017 BBC miniseries "War & Peace" and loved his performance in it.
If I had go put money on any actor in the next five years to get an Oscar nomination, it would be Paul Dano. I think his issue is similar to Toni Collettes and that is simply that he's so chameleonic that people just look over him and forget how brilliant he is. Kind of got Amy Adams issues in that he's always incredible and gives understated performances and sadly the academy prefers their loud performances and narratives. A solid consistently good actor will never have the narrative that other nominees will have. That's why DiCaprio, Pacino and Paul Newman took so long to win. Purely and only because they're consistently great and their narratives are pretty much only 'he's great'
Yes, excellent point. Thanks for watching!
I’m still shocked he wasn’t nominated for There Will Be Blood. He may never had a big shot at winning, but the fact he wasn’t nominated is still surprising. Thanks for covering Paul Dano never being nominated Brian, keep up the great work and take care!
Thanks, Jared!!
I think Paul will definitely get nominated within the next 5-10 years. He would need a juicier role and a narrative to propel him and his potential nomination. I also had the same sentiments with Scarlett Johansson and why it took her many years to get nominated for an Oscar (well, she got two nominations in the same year!), ever since she gave a memorable performance in Lost in Translation. Her role in Marriage Story was inspired by her own divorce from her second marriage and she also starred in the final Avengers film, which kept her in public discussion throughout awards season. Plus a role in which she had a German accent in Jojo Rabbit. Two Oscar nominations as a reward after many years of being the sixth in line or so for awards final list.
Paul being bypassed by his much older co-star Judd Hirsch didn’t help. Same scenario with Caitríona Balfe over Judi Dench in Belfast, despite Caitríona getting nominated to all precursors bar the Oscar. I guess there’s now the new rule - they will pick the elderly veteran actor who might probably die in the next couple of years or retire soon - an Oscar nomination would be a good send-off as a tribute to their careers, as that role in the film might be their last chance. If Paul will reunite with Brian Cox for another movie, one of them should go as lead and the other as supporting, so no vote splitting. (And I’d love Brian to get an Oscar nomination soon! Succession’s now finished and next year he’ll return to the West End, then do screen work in between)
Yes, excellent points, thank you!
So I was a writer who loved movies about writers, which means I loved Ruby Sparks. And I know we're talking about Paul's elusive Oscar, but I think Zoe should have been recognized for that screenplay that she wrote. 👍
Yes!! Would’ve nominated it for sure!
It would be great to see you do an Oscar video on Toni Collette and Djimon Hounsou. Both have been nominated but not recognized for their incredible talent.
Excellent ideas!
I remember seeing Love & Mercy at the SXSW film festival. It was a very potent and close-to-home emotional film for me. I had to fight my tears because I was seated close to the stage. I don’t think Paul was there. John Cusack, Brian Wilson himself and his wife, and director Bill Pohlad were there for the screening. I’ve seen L.I.E., Little Miss Sunshine, There Will Be Blood and Ruby Sparks by then, and simply felt his turn as the younger Brian Wilson was his most powerful performance yet. I was upset he didn’t get in then, and that he has been passed over yet again. I really hope he finally gets recognized soon. He is such a talented actor and budding filmmaker that it shouldn’t be that hard for the Academy to see that too.
Lovely story, thanks for sharing.
I genuinely can not understand how he hasn't gotten an oscar nomination yet. It infuriates me.
It’s weird. He should have at least one.
I didn't know it, I took it for granted that he had been at least nominated, gutted.
His performance in "There Will Be Blood" really was stellar.
Agreed, thanks for watching!
I hadn´t even heard of him until awards season began but I saw his IMDB and my GOD. There Will be Blood, Prisoners and 12 Years a Slave? Now THAT´S prolific
Yes, he’s in a lot!
I forgot he was in L.I.E. - impressive start to an impressive career.
An amazing performance!
happy 110th brian!! Paul will earn his time. in his right time.
Thanks so much!!
Paul Dana AND Paul Giamatti deserved Oscar nominations for Love & Mercy in my opinion. Such different and interesting supporting actor performances in a single film.
I've always liked Paul Dano, but he's been an absolute favorite of mine since he played Pierre in the BBC's War and Peace in 2016. He carried the 6-hr miniseries with beautifully endearing awkwardness (I'm a little sad you didn't mention it, but I can't expect everyone to be as big into classic literature adaptations as I am). I agree, his first nomination could very well be in the next 5 years!
I didn’t have time to get to everything, but yes, another great title on his resume!
I’m reminded of Judi Dench taking over the Best Supporting Actress slot occupied by Catriona Balfe for Belfast. Hirsch is nowhere near as beloved as Dench, but it feels like the same kind of sentimental late career love letter.
I’m more confident that Dano’s time will come with the Academy than I am Balfe’s, but I could honestly see him being overlooked for a long time yet. He’s a very understated actor, and when I think of him, I don’t necessarily think of films that play to the glamorous sheen of the mainstream, or the flavour of the moment.
That said, I do think he’ll probably barrel through the competition the moment he gets the nom. It’ll be REALLY hard for any pretty boy movie star or prestige vet to compete with anything strong enough to get Under the Radar King Dano into the final five.
I’ll also add that Hong Chau this year is a great example of why mourning a missed nomination isn’t always the end of the story. The Whale didn’t make it into Best Picture, but Hong Chau kicked category staple Dolly DeLeon (who I thought early on was in the top three Oscar contenders) out of the Supporting Actress category. The hive mind does remember.
Excellent points! Thanks for watching!
@@TheAwardsContender My absolute pleasure! Your videos are always a joy!
Hands down. Dano deserves that Oscar.
Agreed, thanks for watching!
He should have one for love n mercy, that movie and he was amazing
Yes, agreed!
Where do I start with this man. Damn he always gives stellar performances, every movie of his Im on the edge of my seat. Im a simple woman if it has Paul in the movie I click and watch. He is one of the best actors in Hollywood. He can be talking to a wall Im going to watch. He will always have my undivided attention. Some of these newer actors can learn a thing or 2 from him ❤️
Great selection for the Elusive Oscar, Brian. I thought Dano's film directorial debut was excellent! If Dano doesn't win an Oscar, at least he will have a long career, a very versatile actor!
Yes, agreed! Thanks for watching!
Judd hirsch getting the Oscar nod over Paul reminds me exactly of what happened last year when Judi dench got a Oscar nomination over caitriona balfe for Belfast it’s seems similar to Judi and caitriona situation Judd got over Paul bc he’s more recognized by the Oscar’s having gotten a Oscar nod previously for ordinary people and the confusion surrounding Paul and caitriona screen time in each of their respected films over rather they really supporting or actually co-leads, but it is unfortunate bc I really Paul was gonna get into especially when braid Pitt stems and the overall hype for Babylon slow down, and 2/5 slots seemed wide open
There is no way anyone could argue Paul Dano was any sort of lead in that film. It was about the kid. Michelle Williams was technically the female lead, so she was A lead. Dano was not a lead whatsoever.
I know! Dano should’ve gotten in this year, I’m still baffled by that omission.
I also want Zoe Kazan to get more dramatic roles and eventually some Oscar love.
Yes, she’s great in She Said!
@@TheAwardsContender Haven't seen it yet lol, will check it out.
I’d love a video on my favorite actress Toni Colette!
Will definitely get to her!
That whole prisoner movie is pure agony and Dano's acting is amazing but holy shit the writing. Truly able to trigger all the rage and sadness inside u
Such a great film!
Swiss Army Man is one of my favorite films ever. It's so bonkers but so earnest at the same time, and Paul is great in it. Oh, and the score is absolutely perfect. I hope the success of EEAO brings more people to SAM, and it'd be great if Paul worked with the Daniels again!
Agreed!
I know it would never have gotten a nom since it's a bonkers movie, but I thought he deserved a nom for that one
Same
The academy gave the correct Supporting Nom to Judd Hirsch.
But they definitely got it right here.
Not so much right with the miss for There Will Be Blood
Na. Hirsh's role was overrated. And underwritten. They could have literally given the role of artist encouraging another artist. And he was doing too much. Less is more. Dano was literally breaking my heart for 2 hours.
Thanks for watching!
He should have been nominated for The Fabelmans. He was the heart of that movie. I would rather have him nominated than Great Uncle what'shisname which was literally a walk on role.
Yeahhh I love both performances, but I do think Dano deserved it more.
It’s crazy looking back that he didn’t get a nom for TWBB, genuinely one of the best supporting performances I’ve seen and even more remarkable considering he was 21/22 at the time
Expecting an elusive video for Toni Collete, Naomi Watts, Helena Bonham Carter, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tom Hardy, Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan...
Great ideas! Check out my Gyllenhaal video in the archives.
The first movie I saw Dano in was Little Miss Sunshine. The cast were all good but his performance is what made me LOVE this movie. He blew me away.
In my mind, he is still the young guy from Little Miss Sunshine. Where does the time go? 😂
But to be honest, I think I’ve only seen him in a few movies. Not that familiar with his work.
Great video!
Thanks so much!
Banshees was so good. It made me think so much and, if the actor who cuts his fingers in that movie had won the Oscar for best supporting character, I wouldn't have been mad. Interesting movie about friendship and self-image.
I thought Kerry Condon deserved the O.
I'm shocked you didn't mention him turning down The Power of the Dog to do the Batman which would've resulted in his 1st ever Oscar nod
Really. What role would he have played? Jesse Plemons role? If that's the case then I'm torn because I was happy Plemons finally got an oscar nod.
@@richierich7229 yes Jesse’s role
Didn’t know that!! Thanks for sharing!
I just have such a love/hate relationship with Paul Dano. Cause as a kid and teenager, my first contact with him was with a lot of his annoying characters (he does a lot of those lmao). But I just grew to love him as an artist, especially after listening to his album. He's kinda cool
Yes, he’s fantastic!
Kevin Bacon a respected actor for around 40 years in acclaimed films, would like to see a video on why he has never been nominated.
Yes, I’ll definitely get to him!
Congrats on your 100th video, Brian! This segment was so informative. I really like Paul Dano, and especially enjoyed his performance as Brian Wilson in "Love and Mercy." For the next elusive Oscar video, I vote for Bradley Cooper. Thanks so very much and keep up the excellent research and commentary!
Thanks for watching! Bradley Cooper would be a fun one!
The only Oscar Spielberg's cloying family drama deserves was Dano for supporting actor and ironically being the one that gotten shut out. I just don't understand.
Loved his performance!!
You spoil us Brian!!!!! Yet another awesome video and yes I'm sure we all agree he should've had at least 2 or maybe 3 noms by now!!! I was stunned by his performance in Love and Mercy, though I remember at the time thinking that I really shouldn't have been given his previous impressive performances, BUT then I was even more stunned at the lack of awards love as i really thought he was gonna clean up!! Well, as you say, it's just a matter of time!!
Thanks, Bev! Yes, I believe his time is coming!
Paul WRECKED me in Love & Mercy.
Paul is a great actor, we will be so happy when he gets his first nomination. And a great director, too, so, I don't doubt the nomination can come from any side.
I love your videos and the hommage you do to these actors.
Thank you so much!
I've only recently watched the batman and absolutely fell in love with dano, going through his entire repertoire and absolutely can't believe how I've never heard of him before
this is honestly a great video to watch to catch a hold of all the films he's been in, taking notes right now
He did a wonderful job in Leo Tolstoy's "War and Peace" as Pierre Bezukhov for the BBC back in 2016.
Hot take, I’m not surprised he hasn’t been nominated. He deserved it for There will be Blood, but don’t think he had the support in Hollywood. Now he does, but his performances are always just ok to me.
Fair enough. I think he’s deserved 3 noms by now!
Paul Dano is very versatile. It is possible that he didn't get nominated for The Fablemans because it appeared too conventional for him and that the image change didn't create a strong enough impression. He needs something that will meet his image and push it in a new direction.
Absolutely, thanks for watching!
It’s just a shame that he didn’t got a nomination for There will be blood and The Fabelmans.
Agreed!
The unfortunate truth is just that there are some deserving actors out there who somehow never earn an Oscar nomination despite them being great. Kevin Bacon has never gotten one. Donald Sutherland has never gotten one. There are others.
Speaking of two more Elusive Oscar candidates!
@@TheAwardsContender also: James Marsden.
OMG great video❤ it would be interesting see a video about the year Sissy Spacek won over Mary Tyler Moore, Goldie Hawn and Gena Rowland😮
Yes, that would be a fun one. Thanks for watching!
I love your videos. Just one issue here. A few times you referred to Judd Hirsch's 10 mins of screen time. Sounds dismissive of his performance! While Dano deserved a nomination but so did Hirsch!
Wasn’t intended to be dismissive. Just wanted to note that Dano is in a lot more of the film and is excellent in many scenes. Hirsch is great in the film too!
why’d you have to remind me he doesn’t have anything 😭 cant wait to see him win something at the oscars one day cus my god he deserves it.
Agreed, thanks for watching!
@@TheAwardsContender no worries man, only got Really into the oscars this past awards season just gone but yours were one of the first i saw when i started looking on yt about it! you do great work so im happy to be here ☺️
Paul Dano should’ve been nominated for The Fabelmans. I can’t believe that Judd Hirsch took his nomination. It could’ve been his first Oscar nomination. He should’ve at least one nomination by now. I just hope he gets his due in Dumb Money probably later this year.
Same!
Emily Blunt and elusive Oscar would be awesome
That one is definitely coming.
An interestingly-built man.
👍
Do One On Peter O'Toole I always been curious on why he never won a oscar
Nor did Richard Burton ever win an Oscar.
Nor did Richard Burton ever win an Oscar.
Dude really deserved a nomination for There Will Be Blood. Do you understand how hard it is to hold one’s own against Daniel Day-Lewis? Even Leo couldn’t crack it in Gangs of New York. And this was Oscar winning Daniel Day-Lewis. I love his physicality in particular. In The Batman, they really juxtapose his actions with his very meek looking face, which just makes him all the creepier.
Also Prisoners.
Dan should have been nominated over Judd Hursh
I forgot he was in Love And Mercy.
Great movie!
He should have been for there will be blood...that was criminal...
I will never understand why Paul Dano wasn't nominated for Little Miss Sunshine, while Alan Arkin (in a far less memorable role) was not only nominated but won.
Surprised you didn't think he would get nominated for Swiss Army Man. Obviously Daniel was the more showy performance but damn, Dano was fucking amazing. I was really hoping that year would be his first.
I remember him in Little Miss Sunshine. He was kinda hot lol
Great performance!
Elusive? I'd never heard of him until this awards season.
Haha, I think he’s an amazing actor and should have 3 Oscar noms by now.
One day Paul Dano will win an Oscar. One day…
Agreed!!
Please do Colin Farrell next please
Good idea!
Wont mention a film. Dano is amazing.
Hmm...I wonder IF he split his own vote with two great supporting performances last year?! Maybe that's wishful thinking, but I wonder...
I bet he was in 6th place!

IDK about an elusive oscar for paul dano ...
Haha, I’ll get to an older, more seasoned actor next time.
@@TheAwardsContender I see many nominations in his future but my crystal ball isn't seeing a golden stature just yet. great video!
Is a Johnny Depp and the elusive oscar a possibility?
If it got enough votes on my Patreon, possibly!
9:30
Too early for him to be part of elusive oscar
Absolutely yes
He's been giving stellar performances for 20 years and major awards buzz for 15. How is that too early?
Fair criticism. I wanted to do one more Elusive Oscar about someone involved in the previous awards season, and his was the story I most wanted to tell.
Harrison Ford for illusive oscar?
Great idea!
He's not done yet, i read he's signed up to do The Wizard of The Kremlin. Sounds like an Oscar coming to him in 2025. We shall see.😊
Like #111 is a sign of good luck 🥰😬
❤️❤️❤️
Unfortunately, to the masses, I think he is a “oh yeah…that guy…yeah, he was good.” actor. I hate the term, but his “brand” is fairly nebulous and the Academy still doesn’t know what to make of him. He badly needs to find his Walter White.
That's an uphill climb imo
Donald sutherland
Steve Buscemi
Paul Giamatti
Keith David is also someone i admire but i fear he hasn't gotten a role to sink his teeth into
He doesn't shine in the movie if we are honest, and the character is not the most memorable
What about little miss sunshine
I am sadly on the side of Tarantino....In my very subjective opinion, I just don't think he's really that great of an actor...he's not bad either but I wouldn't say he has done anything that is oscar worthy yet.
Fair enough!
You're reaching. He's mostly forgettable.
He is white
He’s gonna have to play Trump for a nom isn’t he 🙃
😂
We're getting Sebastian Stan as Trump so that might get Stan some awards buzz after being Snubbed for 'I, Tonya'.
