This is probably the most honest review, its easy to pick apart critically, but in terms of enjoyment, I loved it, was loads of fun.
I Love Your Videos Dangerville
Honestly, John C. Reilly steals the show in this one. He is a goofball character, but he isn't just there for the jokes. There's some genuine drama going on with him and he has some real moments of badassery. :)
@@BoyBlunder66 I cried. Full on. I thought that was marvellous.
His character i cared more about than the others
King Kong vs Godzilla (2020):
Godzilla: Save Mothra!
Kong: WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME!!!one111!!
man mothra is the crappiest Godzilla monster I like the gigan or king ghidhora
....What? I was just referencing BvS dude lol
I dunno I just think mothra sucks lol just a random comment
Mecha-Godzilla when?
+Nobodi Jones Mecha-Godzilla will have his own solo movie before the eventual Justice League of Kaiju movie and after the Netflix King Ghidora show drops.
"Guys, people were upset that Godzilla didn't have enough action"
"Oh, they want action? We'll show those fuckers action!"
Really, I was surprised at how quick the movie went by. Not a dull moment at all, for sure.
I can't believe you didn't mention the battle with the octopus. A call-back to when King Kong fought a giant octopus in King Kong vs Godzilla (1962).
That Vietcong joke was fucking hilarious.

So he made a pun, no need to go Berserk...

With Berserk, we all win.

Followed immediately by a 7 month hiatus? ;)
it kinda annoys me that everyone wants to do a cinematic universe, but I'm fine with this one.
Spooky Skeleton I know that. I said I'm fine with the Universal shared universe.
This is actually two companies WB and Universal. The Universal Monster Verse Reboot is not started yet.
I'm glad it's become more varied with monsters(which already had a shared universe with all the verses godzilla movies right) and the classic monsters. It's the superhero thing that was too much and people scrambling to get a superhero one like what Fox failed to do.
I'm actually kind of annoyed with Universal's upcoming universe, if anything. The new Mummy movie looks like garbage.
It's all about the money. I blame the fast and the furious movies.
I actually laughed at your gorilla warfare joke.
[insert Navy Seal Copypasta here]
So Captain Marvel, Nick Fury and Loki go to an island.
With Fred Flintstone
+TheKilluminati714 followed by Dewey Cox and Walter after bowling with the Dude
And they all start making out?
Don't forget the Nova Corps. (John C. Riley)
Flame of Udun I wanted to say Grodd! I tried to stay Marvel though, lol.
FINALLY!!! SOMEONE WHO ENJOYED IT LIKE I DID!!!! XD
You have disgustingly awful taste.
Why people wouldn't enjoy? This movie is a blast!
@@pygmalioninvenus6057 you sir have no right to force people to hate a movie that you dont like so shut the fu k up
You said Eiji Tsuburaya ate one of the squids used for the Toho's Kong movies and this Kong ate the squid... Was that a subtle reference or its just me?
subtle reference
I was so happy in the theater when I saw that part and the really subtle reference it had. Good stuff.
YES! I caught that! Loved it!
I KNEW I WASN’T THE ONKY ONE!!! 🤣
Okay, technically, it was an octopus, not a squid. But now that you mention it... Yeah, I cannot disagree that is more than a coincidence.
Rodan needs another movie, am I right
Hell yes.
hell yeah.
Imanol ples rodan has to be the most underrated among the popular four
Hafizul Azri I agree, that's why he needs another movie(also check out the trailer for gamera)
Yes! Imagine Rodan having an epic dogfight with modern fighter planes or a swarm of drones.
The end credits scene at the end of Iron man (2008) was a momentous moment for comic book fans. The end credit scene in Kong Skull Island is a momentous moment for Godzilla/Kaiju fans!
Refrocks im both
Jony Ibarra Same here man!
I know this is an old video, but Kong in Skull Island is probably my favorite movie monster of all time, just because of his mannerisms. Terry Notary really made him such a badass.
James: *makes a video about King Kong*
5 mins later *_Talks about the history of Dracula and Godzilla_*
It may not be perfect but guess what. It's King Kong. One of my favorite franchises I grew up with. I loved the original, liked the 76 version, and I LOVED Jackson's King Kong in 2005 considering I was still very young. I'm just so happy that giant monster movies are making a come back in Hollywood.
All I care now is about CONTINUITY!. The thing that the original Godzilla mivie series was missing was a good continuity to all of the sequels.
Well, actually the continuity in the original movie series wasn't that bad.
You got the Showa series which is one long series of movies, with just one stupid movie that is a kid's dream, so not canon. Then you got the Heisei series. Again, one series of movies with the original movie from 1954 as it's basis. The Millenium series however... damn.
Mivie? Edit your comment please

Right before the post credits scene, I noticed a disclaimer saying "Godzilla, King Ghidora, Mothra, and Rodan all owned by Toho". Way to ruin the surprise of the post credit scene with the end credits.
Morgil Well, no one really pays attention to the credits.
xfinafire yeah pretty much
I hope the post-credits scene is King Kong taking a shit off a cliff onto a bunch of people below.
Rusty Nickels that'd be funny, but keep wishing
They talk about the other Kaijus, shows Mothra, Ghidorah, Godzilla etc.
+Ugly Mofo Predator - I don't really care.
Eh, not really. More like they reference them and show vague drawings
Rusty Nickels That would be 1 of the dumbest after credits scenes ever
Great review James. Curious to see the movie now. Really looking forward To Kong vs Godzilla
Hah...have you ever seen the 60's Kong vs Godzilla
I doubt they'll fight honestly. In the movie Kong is wounded by copters' rotors and Godzilla has a laser breath...
I think that the title is called Godzilla Vs Kong.
Christopher Martin kong:save...mothra!
Godzilla:WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME!
I'm gonna miss the giant monster reviews
Just wait for Pacific Rim 2 and Godzilla King of Monsters
During Godzillathon he said he'd do a Gamera one someday. Maybe we'll see that whenever the new movie is supposed to come out.
he did the gamera series
+MistaMagic52 The "new movie" was just some test concept footage. The movie, 99% chance, won't happen
oh hell yeah man, do they destroy cities?
I look forward to seeing Godzilla Vs. Kong in 2021.
Did anyone else notice the line from Samuel L. Jackson. "Hold on to your butts?" i thought that was a nice reference to the org. Jurrasic Park.
Okay, so it's Captain Marvel, Loki, Nick Fury and James P. Sullivan going to an island where Wreck It Ralph is worshipping King Kong. Got it.
don't forget the squid from the meg, and groot's great, great, great grandfather.

I gotta say, I really enjoyed this one. Something that kind of tires me out is that, when you go to watch a King Kong movie, you basically have your choice of them...but you're literally watching the same story, over and over again...
This one finally did what I've wanted for years; gave Kong a new story to follow, one that doesn't necessarily have to follow the original story, but gets to be its own unique thing.
I also like the "culmination" feel this Kong has to it; it feels like in some way or another, every single incarnation of Kong up to this point has inspired a lot of what went into the movie - particularly the scene where Kong fought a giant Octopus.
Some of the humor felt a little bit...stale though. Like when Samuel L. Jackson makes a reference to Jurassic Park.
But the one part of the movie that is without a doubt worth it, is the Post Credit scene. Truth be told, I was actually thinking that a lot of what was shown was going to be dropped before the movie was finished...
Man, that post-credits scene was so unexpected and awesome! I saw the Toho trademark roll by during the credits and me and my friend was like "wait, what??" and then the scene hit. I was expecting a post-credits scene, but I was *not* expecting that at all. Such a shame that there were only like four other people left in the audience.
OMG Those puns! James is officially a father now.
Shame the Jaegers from Pacific Rim cant be introduced into this cross over, would be cool to see Gipsy Danger go up against Kong and Godzilla
Metaluna Zombie no..just no😂😂😂
Metaluna Zombie jet jagar jet jagar gojira and jagaaar punch punch punch
BlockABoots it wouldn't stand a chance lol
But Gipsy Danger is like 70 m tall...
They could crossover with parallel universes
This movie was almost everything I wanted from a big Western budget kaiju flick. I would've liked more character development, and some scenes could've been better diffused, but over all it was awesome.
Kinda sad he never talked about the Mighty Joe Young remake from the 90s.
FoneyBone1 I remember renting the movie when it released, but I don't really remember the plot. Should I revisit it?
FoneyBone1 I remember loving Mighty Joe Young.
Probably Bill Paxton's most underrated movie.
FoneyBone1 he did in one of the Monster Madness reviews
The music in MJY is so beautiful. One of James Horner's (RIP) greatest work.
My guess is that kong is less sympathetic because godzilla is going to act as the "good guy" in the 2020 movie and kong as the bad guy. I mean they were pounding that godzilla hero drum pretty hard at the end of the 2014 godzilla.
My guess is with you! ...in a logic world ;P
They made Kong look like a good guy in this movie as well.
MrWesdotcom I think they will team up and fight Ghidorah or something. Ghidorah is NOT going to die in Godzilla 2. I guarantee that!
Nitromian I agree with you!
I think it's pretty much going to be "Godzilla 2"="Ghidrah, the Three Headed-Monster!" and "Godzilla Vs. Kong"="Invasion of the Astro-Monster!". I think that's what they're going for.
Just imagine if this train keeps rolling like Marvel did.
2021: Gamera, Pacific Rim 2
2022: Kong 2, Rodan, Mechagodzilla
2023: Godzilla 3, Frankenstein Conquest, Mothra Origins
2024: Gamera 2, Son of Kong, Destroyah
2025: Destroy all Monsters
Don't you mean Pacific Rim 3? Pacific Rim Uprising already came out.
Pacific Rim isn't part of the monsterverse.
I enjoyed the kongathon, James. Was a great addition to Cinemassacre. I'm looking forward to the next AVGN.
I loved this movie, especially the sub-narrative where the guy was trying to get home to see his wife and kid who he got separated from during WW2.
Hi James! Just saw the movie a few days ago at an IMAX, that was amazing! I know the characters were pretty bland, but honestly, I was there just to see Kong fight some giant monsters, and in that respect it truly delivered. IMHO, the human characters were just there to get us to Kong's Island. I guess they felt they didn't need to develop them much.
I was really surprised about your review, you being such a big Kong fan, you gave the most positive review I've seen in youtube. Most reviewers were pretty hard on the movie, but yours looked at the best the movie had to offer, it was quite refreshing. I'm also looking forward to the next movie in the series, and the huge showdown in 2020!
Kong is also an adolescent in this movie, and he's going to be even bigger in 2020.
"There's no villain character that you want to see Kong kill."
I actually really enjoyed the part where Kong mercilessly massacred the helicopter crews, it serves them right after bombarding the island and waking up the Skullcrawler. I know it's weird for me to say this since I normally hate "disaster" type of movies where the fanservice of the films is basically just a bunch of random people getting slaughtered by a gigantic force. Also, the WW2 survivor dude was a really badass, and it's quite refreshing to see them depicting a US World War veteran becoming friends (albeit not shown) with a Japanese soldier, and then inherit his sword in his honour.
stay for the after credits! you will have a nerdgasm
Reijiropaws
I did! especially with that familiar roar happened!!
I didn't know there was a post credit scene... can you recap
Aaron Evans You'll hear Godzilla's epic roar.
No truer words have been spoken. I literally nerdgasmed out of my seat and fell on the floor (I was the only one left in the theater, so luckily no one saw me).
*SKREEEEEEEONNNNKKK!!!*
This isn't the end of Kongathon, right? :(
Well, what else is there to cover? The animated series?
Flame of Udun yeah, there's 3 of them that I know of. One old one from Rankin Bass, one from I think the 2000s that I never watched and one recent and exceptionally shitty one from Netflix. If you really wanna stretch it you could do the games too.
They did the Peter Jackson movie game on James & Mike Mondays actually
This is the end because Kong came out. That's what Kongathon was about. So yeah, it's over.
FINALLY A POSITIVE REVIEW!! Is it so hard to ask for a nice review once in a while....
If you're going into a review demanding the verdict you want to see, you're missing the point of a review.
Negative review? Where? The Movie got a 79 on Rottentomatoes
S.G. I. I think what people don't understand is this is a monster movie it's about the monsters not the humans look at all Godzilla films they had the same formula and they are loved by everyone I knew cinemassscre was the only one who would understand how the movie is a monster movie and I'm glad he liked if he didn't like I would feel this monsterverse would suffer
S.G. I. double toasted liked it
Michael Scruggs It doesn't mean it's still a good film. I'm glad that I went to an early screening because I didn't have to pay for my ticket. Such a disappointing film.
Hello, Cheers from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Loved all your episodes on Kongathon. I was 9 years old when I was introduced to Kong World. The 1976 remake was on cinemas, and it happened to me to watch the 1933 movie on TV on a saturday night, and going to cinema the next day to the 76 movie. That blowed me up, and to this days I am so passionate about the KK universe . That's why I have to thank you and congratulate you for every episode of Kongathon, brought a lot of memories up and let me learn some details I never knew. I went yesterday to see Skull Island, I agree with your review, and I state that there is not such a thing like a bad Kong Movie, loved it , and can't wait for the 2020 Godzilla encounter. Wish you well , and ....well done !!!!!
Yo, James' movie analysis just gets better and better.
James: "He is gonna fight Godzilla eventually"
Later in the video:
"I am not gonna tell you guys what the post credit scene is about"
Me: Let me take a guess
Why the hell do people keep complaining that this film has "bland characters" its Kong: Skull Island, nobody comes to this movie to get Hamlet levels of character development we come to see a prehisotric giant Gorilla go apeshit (pun intended) and we got that and beyond. What more do you want? An HOUR (of real time) on the boat en route to Skull Island?
Yeah, and the characters weren't really that bland for the time they were given on screen. I found them leagues more interesting than the characters in Godzilla (2014).
Truue :)
Charley Newman what grinds my gears with James here is that he complained the most about Godzilla 2014 was how slow it felt and the characters took away from Godzilla, here Kong is front and center and there's more action than in Godzilla and yet he's now complaining about the characters being basic.
I want that now
The post credit scene was insane are you kidding me.
I cant wait 2 years for this.
This Kong movie is more original then the 77 and 05 combind, Yes it a Reboot. But still better then a remake where they never made a sequel? I'm still piss off about that.
I could listen to James talk about movies for hours.
Kongathon was bananas. Can't wait for the next -athon!
This is what I love about James he doesn't get all pretentious and bash a movie for being cheesy fun he just embraces it and has a good time.
There are two kinds of people. Those who were introduced to John C Reilly through his comedies, and those who were introduced through Gangs of New York.
You remember your ol uncle Jack dont ya?
“By the way, I really wish they’d come up with more original titles!”
Let’s refer to it as Godzilla: Long Live The King!
James is one of the best reviewers on youtube. He tries to be positive but still critiques the film. Well done.
I liked this movie but it was apparent that the producers were only using this movie as a stepping stone to God vs King.
I enjoyed the film quite a bit. Kong was exactly what Godzilla lacked, fun characters and far more monster action. It's what we asked for and it's what they delivered.
Kong vs Godzilla (2020):
Kong: Tell me, do you bleed?.......YOU WILL
The post-credits scene was the best part of the movie!! For people that haven't seen it... it was a teaser for Godzilla: King of The Monsters with Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidrah/Ghidorah. That's all I needed to get super hyped for 2018!!!!
....all we need is a Universal Gamera.....
Then in 2020 GODZILLA VS GAMERA VS KONG VS PACIFIC RIM!
James, thanks for your review. With how psycho Hollywood's become of late, I wasn't certain I should go to see this movie (or watch it at all, for that matter). I knew it was going to be a different picture, but thanks to your review I can go see it with confidence of what to expect. Thanks again, sir. Also a fan of your Monster Madness, and looking forward to what direction you will be taking the series this year.
I just watched the movie and I gotta say, it was really enjoyable. It was a lot of fun, and a solid action movie, but not much more than that. I was hoping you would talk about the sometimes awkward and at other times cool cinematography. I think the director had a lot of control over how the movie would look, so the end product is very stylized and interesting to look at. Though sometimes there would be an awkward pan or zoom, or slow mo moment that would stick out like a saw thumb. However, I think it was for the best. It was kinda like a comic book, if you know what I mean. I think if I watched another movie from the same director, I could probably tell who made it, similar to Quentin Tarantino's movies.
The post-credits scene was definitely worth the wait! Certainly looking forward to the next movie in the MonsterVerse.
damn it , i just left the movie theatre......... without watching the post credit scene

I've always taken reviews for granted until I tried doing them myself. This is definitely better than my own review, and James only had an initial theatre viewing to go off of. Well done. Hopefully I might be able to reach that same plateau one day.
Don't get a chance to know know Kong? I disagree. They showed him hunting for food and staring at the sky feeling alone and confused multiple times during the movie. What else should they have done?
Quite honestly, it's one of my absolute favorite movies of all time for sure. I just got home from the theater and no movie, not even any monster movie I've ever seen has been as much of a thrill ride for me as this movie. Overall it's a spectacular film to me, and I'm gonna get that shit on DVD as soon as I can possibly get my hands on it.
Any body else feel like the giant octopus might've been an homage to the original Godzilla vs King Kong?
Pretty sure that's what it was
Thanks for the Kongathon!! Ive always loved the original Kong since I was a kid and I'm definitely excited for the new one. It was really great to learn a lot of the history of the rights and films in your other videos. Is there a reason why Warner Bros was given permission? Like a rights exchange or some sort of agreement or exchange of characters?
The director of this movie wants to direct the Metal Gear one, right?
mechon12 you are right boku no pico
I love the scream James does for the intro of these
Dear Billy... "It's just an entertaining monster movie."
Dude I gotta say I loved these Kongathons soooo much. Keep it up!
Will Kong and Godzilla become Kaijus in Pacific Rim 2?
This is what every Jurrasic Park sequals wants to mimic but fails hard.
I bet in King Kong vs Godzilla they have 1 or 2 big battles and then combine forces to fight something else!
Could be mechagodzilla.
I just got back from Kong skull island and that extra scene actually made me cry!
this film is underrated af, its a good laugh!
I loved Kong Skull Island! I feel like they took a story as old as time and made it fresh. Great movie
A lot of UA-cam reviewers are trashing this movie for bland characters and over the top action, but isn't that why they liked Mad Max: Fury Road so much??
i want to see logan
SirCouchus No they are trashing it because it has an average story at best. No character development. The lines were awful. Tone wise it didn't know what it wanted to be. Did it want to be a serious movie or a straight up comedy movie? More than half the jokes they made in this movie was just bad. Pacing was very off and some of the editing was off in terms of transitioning scenes. So I can understand why many critics are trashing it.
We all knew this movie was being made to make Kong look strong before he fought Godzilla. Nobody went into this saying 'Wow I can't wait to see what character development these soldiers have!' It's essentially Pacific Rim set in the 70's. That movie had bland characters and a shoddy story but people took it for what it was, but they refuse to do it for this movie, for some reason.
SirCouchus So we need to forget that this film is bad because it is setting up a fight. Wtf???? Yeah I am going to totally pay for a movie that does nothing great except for the Kong fight scenes. I am dc fan and I didn't give BvS a pass because they are setting up Justice League. They should call out all the flaws in this film.
+redhood420 You know that's not what I said at all. What I'm saying is, this movie's purpose was to make the giant monkey look good enough to fight Godzilla. And it did that very well. 90% of the movie was Kong beating up creatures and you admitted that the Kong scenes were great. It's like saying 'Star Wars sucks because there's not enough Dragons!' Like yeah, Star Wars isn't about Dragons. The humans in Kong are irrelevant. The focus is Kong himself and they presented him perfectly. I mean, John Wick was a generic badass hitman but everyone jerked off over that movie because of the action.
The after credit scene got me so hyped though!
For anyone who's curious, the post-credits scene hints at the long-rumored crossover with Dr. Who.
From a storytelling standpoint, it's sort of like a social commentary on the Vietnam War...with Kong as the stand-in for Vietnam.
"Universal Monsters are back!"
>_>
This was, as far as i'm concerned, is the best tribute to both King Kong of the original and Peter Jackson film, and more importantly, the Showa Era Kong, hence why he looks so similar to the toho 8th wonder of the world.:)
Those fucking lizard things scared the shit out of me, and the boneyard as well :/
no villan?!?
Sam Jackson's character (Packard): AM I SOME KIND OF JOKE TO YOU!!?
"No villain characters" you say that Kong should eat! Hmm what about Sam Jackson's character?
Mr Jones that’s what I thought too.
@@coyotefever105 Maybe he didn't see those scenes?
Mr Jones I think he likes Sam Jackson so much I guess.
It sounds like they tried to make the 2014 Godzilla movie with the same amount of depth and emotions as one of the King Kong movies (the original and the two remakes) and they tried making the 2017 Kong: Skull Island movie like one of the Godzilla movies where he just fights monsters and everyone has a good time. I think by the time we get to Godzilla King of the monsters or Godzilla versus King Kong everything will have a proper balance.
Loved the retrospective on this series, James. The original King Kong is still the best, there's parts I enjoy in the Jeff Bridges' (The Dude Kong 😎🐵) and remake the the Peter Jackson remake and I think this be a worthy addition.
Y'all think kong and Godzilla's Mom are both named Martha and they'll make up in the end?
It's great to see daily videos by james

There better be a part where Kong tries to break Godzilla's jaw, but when he's about to do it he just gets fucking blasted.

Oh God, YES! Finally. A critic that gets this movie! Feel so bad for those people having ridiculous expectations for this movie.
