Another use for your plastic tubing (barber cord): I use a small piece 2-3 inches as a stitch stopper when using my circular needles by slipping an end firmly onto each needle.

This was fun and useful. What we love can be highly individualized but I bet the bulb pins (especially the colored versions) would make must have for lot's of yarn crafters.

I would add a row counter which I find useful when a lace pattern has a long repeat and also reading glasses. I searched Amazon for barber cord but my version of Amazon in the UK didn't understand. You named it as hollow jewellery cord and I found it straight away! I couldn't get on with cable needles until I found the spiral ones which can also be used as shawl pins and provide a conversation starter! I love your cat 🐱 cable needle!

The charm like markers are good for me when I'm working on a garter-stitch based shawl and need something to mark the right side. A larger marker with a bright color that I can easily move to keep within a few inches of my working area can really help me when I get disoriented.
Love the embroidery floss for a lifeline. I use a nylon beading cord in a bright shade for my lifeline. I really need to get one of those fix it needles.
I agree with most of your list and choices. Some things I also LOVE or Must-Have are some kind of pattern keeper, row counter, and I've fallen in love with a cable lock. for my shawl knitting.
I use Knit Companion on a Fire Tablet I bought just for that purpose and absolutely love it. It was a real game changer for me. Before that, I used the CocoKnits Maker's Board, which I still use for some things, like a project I work on during lunch at the office because I don't want to leave my tablet at work by mistake. LONG before that, my mom had a metal board that held paper notes to type up when she was a secretary in the 50s and 60s and she used that and a magnet to hold her patterns, so I used that when she taught me to knit. My favorite row counter is the circular chain row counter from Twice Sheared Sheep, where I also get my cable locks. I also love my wooden yarn butler holders.

Love this and we agree on so many things. The spiral cable needle was a gamechanger for me. It doubles as a shawl pin. Who knew? The plastic needle holders, those purple and green curly ones....I use them to store my DPNs together. But what I use them for most - wrap around charger cables for travel. No more tangled mess. Thanks!

I like barber cord for holding armhole stitches but find it too much faff for trying things on - I prefer to use my cable extenders and spare long cable as the stitches flow onto this more easily.
The coil of barber cord I bought from Amazon also included a number of two-hole plastic cable locks and these are great for slipping over both circular needles to secure the project, or for securing the other end when transferring stitches onto a new cable or DPN etc. I've also threaded one onto the end of a ball of yarn before tucking the lock into the centre of the remaining ball to secure the end while still being able to find it again quickly, as well as to thread my spare interchangeable cables through and store them all in one place. The locks are a permanent addition to my notions bag now.

I agreed with your assessment totally!
I’m going after that barber cord! Looks fantastic. I also haven’t seen the swirl cable holder! I’ve been using short DPNs for that.
I really like my wooden ruler a lot..it’s 6” and has a needle hole measurement on it also.

I love those Stitch Stoppers, too! My daughter gave me a pair of them in cute foxes! However, they are too big for the tiny needles I use for sock knitting. I found a package of assorted stitch stoppers by Coco Knits. The smallest 2 sizes are small enough for sock knitting. They only come in earth tones, so they are "Must Have" for me. If they came in fun colors they would be "Love It!"
I also cannot live without my tiny plastic row counter. Thanks for the great video!

I adore the little silicone ring markers! They stretch if needed, so easy to grab, or stay and slide right along my SS needles. This was a rare try out that I've reordered 3 times! Perfect for sock knitting/small needles like size 0, 1 or 2. Just love them, and they come in bright (but limited) colors from Amazon. It was a chance buy, but turned out, it's replaced all my other stitch markers!
The Yarn Stand (looks like a crook/swan neck) holders for balls of yarn) are FAB! I don't know that I'll ever (or can) knit again without them, especially for colorwork! It's like the yarn moving by AIR - no pulling or tugging, not even a little bit! They replace yarn bowls totally - and work REALLY well! I'd highly recommend people try them. Mine (I have 2 for colorwork and plain knitting) stay on my side table and I use it for ALL my knitting now! I wish I could post a pic for you, but I hope people who are sick of chasing balls or tugging yarn, or yarn that gets twisted will try it. It really works amazingly well. Only drawback is that it's not travel-friendly, but for home knitting - I can't see ever not using it.
I see you got my FAV stitch tool! It's just PERFECT and I recall highly recommending this one too! I use the HandiTool (Micheals, local craft stores, or Amazon) all the time! It stays with me if I'm knitting, everywhere. (I should learn to not drop stitches!)
I agree with the majority of what you said. I only add in these items above, since I think they make my life so much easier. I don't like to waste money, but some things, like my swan neck yarn holder and HandiTool, are worth every penny! Good job.

I have a little tag thing from katrinkles for Kitchener stich, it hangs off the side of my project bag (usually sock bag) with the instructions. Lightbulb stitch holders are my favourite, I have some of the claw progress keepers, but I find that they are too heavy, I'll use them to show right side when starting out on a project like a shawl or blanket.

  • @bernerandgoldenmom7143

This was fun! Nice to be validated for all the knitting bits and bobs I have! 😆 I knit a lot of toys, so the safety pin markers are love it for me. They are great when knitting something round on DPNs, like a ball or ornament. It's easy to forget where the row starts. These are also handy if you knit baby/children sox or mittens. It's a great way to join them when you're done and tie a little ribbon through them as a gift. Plus the moms can use them to keep the knitted pieces together in a drawer or when washing. (For kid projects, I always use acrylic yarn for its durability, washability, and to prevent allergic reactions.)
Also, for this type of work, row counters are vital! The clicker ones I find are the best and Clover makes one you can thread your cast-on tail through so it stays with your project.
Instead of the round, plastic markers, I just use a bit of scrap yarn in a slip knot. No noise and easy to cut out of a project. (And free!)
For yarn holders for cables or small sections, I turn to my wood or bamboo DPNs. They have enough friction to hold the stitches, they don't get in your way, and you can knit right off them.
For scissors, I really like the protected yarn cutters. These are usually marketed for embroidery (that's how I found out about them) and are fantastic for travel as their are not tips to stab your bag. They are also wonderful for cutting excess yarn from tails as you can get really close to a stitch without fear of accidentally snipping the stitch.

The hollow cording is my go-to stitch holder and end stopper. I have a piece for holding instep stitches, 3 pieces for my Palpitation hearts I make a lot of, and longer pieces for trying on things. I can use my short pieces on the ends of needles too. If a needle is of a large gauge, I wrap with a rubber band instead. I have WIPs stored with cords in them so the needles can be used elsewhere. This cording is versatile and can be bought at big box craft stores near pony beads.

I use the charm markers on lobster clasps to denote the right side of a project, as a progress marker, and to denote the top of the foot if I'm knitting toe-up socks. :) So I generally have one per project.
For working stitch markers, I love the metal rings from CocoKnits because they're magnetic. I have all theirs, the split rings and solid rings. Those and the lightbulb (metal) markers are my go-to markers.
I use a $3 magnetic metal bowl I picked up in Harbor Freight, and it serves as my notions holder while I'm knitting. Love it! I also use magnets on my end table to hold the little pins to tighten needle tips onto cables, and also to hold darning needles. They're handy.

Fun, handy notions! I’ve used the barber cord to create stitches for picking up later, by wrapping the yarn around it as I’m starting a new row where the pickup stitches need to be. Hate picking up stitches. Learned this technique from someone, I forget who?
And I find that ordinary safety pins (big ones) are handy for pinning the label to leftover skeins of yarn. I think of my mom when I use the, she left a giant box of them in the boxes of craft supplies I inherited. ❤️
Wondering how others keep track of and store their yarn?

I love the clover pendant yarn cutter. It is terrific for plane travel and because appears to be a piece of jewelry it doesn’t arouse suspicion from TSA. Because it is around your neck you never have to worry about misplacing it. I’ve tried the tiny plastic snip and find they are easily broken and easily lost.
Since i learned to magic loop dpns are in my “don’t use” category. I have them but also find that i lose them while traveling. They fall into seat cushion cracks and roll on the floor all too often.
Knitting bags. I have a Tom Bihn Swift in my “love it “ category. I have two and couldn’t live without them. I also really like knitting bags that zip and have a hinged metal frame. It is secure from moths and allows the bag to stay open when knitting.

Love this post! One thing on my Must Have is my Google Drive synced on my tablet and phone. I can enlarge the font, archive (including photos) individual projects, personalize sock patterns for my family easily, insert links to techniques/videos on websites, etc. Another would be different stitch counters. A clicker style around my neck for total rows paired with a dial style to keep track of rows in a pattern. I have poor vision and these make knitting up socks so much easier for me as I frequently miscount my rows. Thanks for sharing your list. Gave me ideas for things I want to try out.

Justice for the split ring markers! I love them, they are so useful! I use them for german short rows to mark where the last double stitch is, for counting sts, to mark bust apex when I'm adding bust darts, as a reminder on a decrease row. Basically anything temporary that you aren't always doing as your knitting. I love that they slip right on/off my the cables for my interchangeable needles without the extra step of opening something like those lightbulb markers. They are an S tier marker for sure.

I have used every type of row counter but finally ended up with Twice Sheared circular chain row counter as my only must have. I absolutely love the light bulb markers! I prefer the various colors. I keep them together in groups of 12 (11 attached to one). Always keep 2 sets for sock bags. I make top-down, flap&gusset, using 9”circs (DPs for toe decs). I use a Pink marker=BOR (at back leg/bottom of foot), markers into every 20th round. Gussets: Green marker/instep sts/Red marker.
When gusset decs finished, I use remaining markers (every 20 rnds) into sts for counting # of ends before toe begins.
Green = Go, Red= Stop, on repeats (lace), I use yellow/orange to let me know the end is near.
Aside from all the little bits & bobs I’ve inherited (or accumulated…ahem!!), most I still use!
Pet Peeve: round markers that have a weeee opening … always catches a strand/ply of yarn, Ugh! Some are attached to kewt sheep/fiber related things. Definitely great for a “true” charm bracelet!
This was Fun, always interested in how others use (or not & why) all these fun tools! Love the Circular Cat!!! Just because… a cat!!!
    Thank you!!

I break plastic split rings so now I use lever back earrings. Lobster claws are too tiny for my meaty fingers. Lol
Mini elastics for stitch makers (can be easily cut out), needle stoppers (wound several times on the end) and holders of dpns. I love the silicone needle stoppers because they also make me smile.
Didn't see the wip gauge as useful until I was given several bags of mystery yarn. A gauge is great for mystery hooks + needles - all of mine have embossed sizes which is wonderful.

Great list! I'm a minimalist so i like to get away with not having more "stuff". For needle stoppers, i cut a couple inches of barber cord and put one end on each needle - not as cute as yours but i don't mind loosing them. Also, to measure wraps per inch you really don't need any specific tool, you can just wrap around any size needle or even better, a ruler.

:) :) yes, I've done the same with a bit of barber cord , one day I was putting knitting away , don't own any official stitch stoppers , have grabbed those ear bud ends and pushed them on before so stitches don't slip off but they leave points exposed. I guess I am not alone :) forms a U between the needles and keeps points away from poking into my work .

Big cable needles are useful if knitting a cabled blanket in bulky yarn. I understand why the needle gauge, however, I refuse to purchase needles that don’t have the size etched on them. For holding dpn needles I use the needle huggers. For the most part I’m in alignment with where you’ve put items. I too am seeking a colorwork solution particularly when using 4 or more colors! I’m thinking of trying ziplock bags. I might have to try the spiral cable needle. I need to see it in use first. I think another category could be added ‘need to donate’.

I like the dangly stitch markers for the end of the row, if I'm working on circular needles. No- I do not like things dangling off my knitting, but I have trained myself that when I hit the dangly one- mark off a row on my counter, flip the marker, and continue. It's a different sensory experience from the rest of the stitch markers, so that difference tells me to stop for a moment.

I enjoyed your categories and notions! Wonderful! Your metal stitch tool is with every project of mine.
My Love-It category would also include Cable Locks (by Twice Sheared Sheep), useful as stitch stoppers in a pinch and for keeping large numbers of stitches inching their way towards the left hand needle for knitting. In addition, I love my Brittany wooden cable needles because they grip the yarn a bit and can easily be knitted from when cabling. I don't have an iPad or an online charting program, so I love using Highlighter Tape on my charts. One more notion I love are my round metal stitch markers without joins that can catch. Needle gage is super important to me. I have vision issues and there is no way for me to read the markings on the needles to tell the size. While I’m good about labeling my needles when they get put away, it’s still hard to tell sometimes so the gage is a must have for me. Along those same lines, I use a row counter for every project. I like the one that is a ring that sits in my finger and I can twist with every row I complete. So much easier than trying to count rows through a magnifying glass.

My tier list of notions is very similar to your list. I have yet to buy the barber cord that is coming soon. I love my fabric dpn holder. I knit a lot of socks and I keep it in my sock bag with a set of small sock dpns that I use on the toes when my circulars get too tight, it also holds a small crochet hook if I need to pick up a dropped stitch. So it does double duty holding needles when not in use.

I use it for picking up along the side of heel flaps on flap and gusset heel socks. I can pick up the stitches with the crochet hook and slip them off the other end onto my sock needle. I've always had trouble picking up those pesky stitches. Now it's easy peasy!!

Forget barber cords. I use 2 mm inside diameter silicon aquarium tubing I get from Amazon. Not as flexible, but much less expensive and they have nifty little connectors for the tubing.

I just got some needle huggers for me chiagoos since the clover ones kept slipping off along with my stitches. My friend in my yarn group suggested the huggers and i love mine. It's the barber cord with a metal holder in the middle to make it look like an 8 or infinity symbol. No more stitches running off with these huggers on duty.

I hate barber cord. Maybe mine is stickier than others but i find it fiddlely to use. Every stitch gets caught. I prefer to slide things onto smaller 40 inch long circs. Then i can knit back onto my working needles too. But otherwise i never meet a notion i couldnt find a use for.

Oh, this is a good one, a tier list !! :) Will try to keep comments short .
Lobster claws , as adorable and cute as they were , they go into a tried it , use it only as a zipper pull on my knitting bags . :)
Along the same lines as the tubing, like you did not buy the tins....
I bought chinese knotting cord on a spool in ".5 mm " for life lines.
I have the bold tie dyed color changing spool that makes it very visible no matter what color yarn .
Same thing as tubing , more than I will ever need but so nice especially with sticky and hairy fibers , I want it to just glide out .
Has been in the LOVE category since spooling out lengths for life lines on butterfly shawl !!!

I must have bought the wrong kind! Mine, that I got in a tin, was sticky and hard to move stitches onto/off of! Lost more than I saved. I didn't like it at all. Waste of money for me. I must have bought the wrong kind! I like that you put the size on there - because that's always a question.
I don't think this is necessary anymore, since I use interchangeable needles only and just put cord stoppers on my cables (adding an additional cable if needed)! Fast, easy and most convenient method for holding stitches/trying on. And I don't have to move them AT ALL!
      Just FYI/suggestion.

Yes, if you have spare cords at hand and you have two to keep sleeves on that allow you room to try on , and another not being used just add one to the body cord , that will work, Even for my mid project washes I do to check my progress and how the garment is going to fit. :) Like you said, pop needles back on and go. It does seem like the solution that takes the least time.
I have no idea how water effects the cords going into the screw on ends. Good news is. To date I never heard anyone say they have had a cord pop out because of it. Assume that is not a problem.
I normally run out of spare cord, like Tonia , I never did try the pre-cut cords in a tin.
Sounds like that would be a struggle. :( I hear they are more expensive .
Only time I had trouble with putting stitches on hold was with using yarn since I often do a mid work soak to see how the garment is coming along. Takes a while to shift stitches off that to needles. This would be the slowest method of putting stitches on hold .

To this day I don't understand why people use ring markers😅 lightbulb stitch markers and the safety pin ones can do the same, but have other uses as well. For me, I only use scrap yarn tied together for stitch markers. They slide over the needles, I use different colours for different meanings and can knit them into my work. At the end, I just cut them, they are yarn scraps after all🤷🏼‍♀️

Sewing/quilting clips. I am amazed how useful they are. They will hold your live crochet stitch, clip your circular needles together to secure your project, clip your squares/pieces together when seaming, clip to secure yarn cakes, hold your hook on your project, mark a row, etc. so many uses. I keep a few in every project bag.

Have you tried the Coco Knits fixit tool? It has crochet hooks on both ends, but facing different directions to help fix garter stitch mistakes. I was wondering if that would be more useful than the traditional fixit tool you showed.

    • @bgummeson
      @bgummeson 22 дні тому +1

I have both, but I use the Handi Tool far more often. I use the pointed tip to ease tension around tight or loose stitches, to help drop down a column of stitches when the yarn is sticky, to function as a knitting needle if I need to do something tricky on slippery yarn and don’t want to knit at the tip of the project needles, and of course, to ladder up when fixing a stitch and reworking a column. The Handi Tool hook seems to grab the yarn more effectively than the CocoKnits stitch fixer, but I agree the Cocoknits tool has value for garter stitch.

I also love my snail (broken ring) stitch markers for crochet. I think thay are made to be easily moved around in your project.
But I don't agree with you for the ring stitch markers. For me, they are too easy replaceable with other things : with locker or lightbubble stitch markers ; or with a piece of scrap yarn. They are also captives of the needle, so if you misplace them, they are a pain to remove and replace ... I don't see the point
