Yes the N has heft but also shows how well engineered that car is. For a SUV/hot hatch to be so close to such a high performance sedan is kudos to the N team. Love both cars. Kudos to M team as well!! Hats off!!
The 5 N isn't overweight at all if you consider its actual size. It is as roomy as an X5M (more legroom, smaller boot but the 5N rear seat slides forward...), a V8TT that isn't even close if you would race it in this company...
3:55 Dab of oppo as the half ton weight difference punishes the impatience on adding power too early after getting the big N to round the harpin on the M's heels....quality stuff 👍🏿
The Udrag course is pretty bumpy so having suspension in its stiffest setting actually causes loss of traction at some parts. One notch down feels better composed which equals more grip and quicker times. Thanks for the callout!
If the have high grip mode LC the manual says the car will use N boost so if everything is setup correctly the car should be doing 650hp for at least 10 seconds
Cope harder. The bmw is a mid to high 10 second car in normal weather and will outcorner it over time (way lighter) and outbrake it too. What did you expect?

The ioniq 5N went when the arms were down and th m3CS when they started moving and the gap at launch is the same as at the line. The bmw is faster but in this race it's a tie for me and considering the price the ioniq is my pick !
Did BMW pay you guys off to take a little snooze at the line ??? You can clearly see the brake lights on the N while the Beemer takes off !! Both times .
Oh please. The 5N can't even beat a m4 comp xdrive. Let alone a m3 CS. Both drivers were to scared to turn that animal
Only a 10 second cooldown on the NGB button. Why not use it off the line and then again on the way back? 30+ seconds for total time, could use it twice. Think the M would probably still take it, but would be interesting to see
Launch control auto engages N Boost for the best launch. If you tap N boost it disengage launch control and says "conditions not met" i think adding a small bit of ESC will give them a better launch. Motortrend got 2.8 and 11.
@lancec3509 keep in mind this only happens if the car is in High Grip LC mode if you use any of the other 2 modes it won't activate the 650hp it would just be 601hp
Closer than i thought but the M3 just edged out the N. But for the average person, the N is going to be more in their price range and be 99% as fast as the M3 CS in a straight line.
@Paff805 if your lease it why are you bothered about list price?? EV deprecate so the lease cost is more to compensate it would be similar price to lease the bmw
Are you a beginner driver? Why don't you use booster first during launch control? And is it true that you set drag mode in N mode? The driver is not getting the most out of the car's performance.
I am in Poland and just ordered Hyundai Ioniq 5n from Belgium. Because of taxes and great discounts on Ioniq 5n I can have it for half the price of M3 here! I also wanted a daily electric car, while I have BMW X5 for long trips. Oh did I mention Ioniq is more practical for my family of 5?
9:47 how could either win? 5N with max battery clearly just lost convincingly. The bmw at all times gives u the same performance and tbey dont heat soak at all thanks to forged internals. Unless its 110 degrees outside the m3 XDrive winning every single time. Also the bmw weighs considerably less and has carbon ceramics. Theres no world where it should of got the same cornering capability of a ioniq 5N. I get that u guys dont own these cars but the m3 could of been pushed around that corner way harder.
That M3 COOKS! That was really impressive. If I’m looking for a track vehicle and had a much expanded budget the M3 would be the play for me. The play currently would be to grab the Ionic 5N and something like a Grand Highlander or a Telluride for the family for that price tag. The M3 is also snug in the back and I hear the service on those brakes is cringe. Cool race though 🤙
Why were the launches of the 5N so delayed compared to the M3, every channel I’ve seen of the 5N it launches like a bullet, over here it felt like both drivers were waiting for paint to dry before taking off.
They did not give the ioniq 5 N a chance each start was super delayed for the n they did not use the ngrin boost button and also had the “fake transmission” mode on which makes the vehicle a hell of a lot slower than full Ev mode
This race makes no sense. You chose the M3's strongest variant, a compact sports sedan, against a CUV (or small SUV) that has only 1 trim and is underpowered in comparison (yes, the Inoniq is 600 HP, but also 400 lbs heavier, putting it at a disadvantage in lb/HP ratio)?! The N is already at a disadvantage in the 0-60 times, braking distance, and cornering...
@carguy2006 the standard m3 competition was slower in the U-drag. You need the CS to beat the 5N by 0.1 second. Yes in certain aspects a standard M3 might be as good or better, but around town where acceleration is important, in terms of comfort, space and efficiency the ionic just leaves it behind. Unless you're driving on the Autobahn or going to the track every week the ionic is the better choice.
@freakattack9616 that's hilarious, they release a new CS every year and make a ton of them. As for the 5n you realise that they're gonna keep making them as well, in 5 years there will likely be an even more powerful model with a graphene battery and 1000hp 🤣
What’s the actual distance you travel in the race? To me anything less than a one mile race is unfair because certain cars keep pulling through the gears and certain cars start better.
These guys cant drive... how is it that the m3 has 1 or 2 car lengths entering the corner and the N catches it and turn at the same time, meanwhile the m3 is lighter and has better brakes. The m3 shouldve won by a larger gap

Was the 5N in N3 regen braking mode?
3:55 Dab of oppo as the half ton weight difference punishes the impatience on adding power too early after getting the big N to round the harpin on the M's heels....quality stuff 👍🏿
These just get better and better
1:18, why does Edmunds never put the Ioniq 5 N suspension in Sport + mode for better corning at the U turn????!!!!!!!!!
The Udrag course is pretty bumpy so having suspension in its stiffest setting actually causes loss of traction at some parts. One notch down feels better composed which equals more grip and quicker times. Thanks for the callout!
Are they using the N boost button on the initial launch, or just the trip back?
If the have high grip mode LC the manual says the car will use N boost so if everything is setup correctly the car should be doing 650hp for at least 10 seconds
They never used the button! This is the issue everyone has. Edmunds decided that BMW would win before the race even started.
N drivers sleeping at the start. You guys should have done multiple runs unless you wanted only the BMW to win. 😅
No, the M3CS is simply much faster from a standing start. It also crushed the new Tesla Model 3 Performance in a Hagerty drag race.
Cope harder. The bmw is a mid to high 10 second car in normal weather and will outcorner it over time (way lighter) and outbrake it too. What did you expect?
It's always the same testing. 2 races, drivers swap
Nevermind the launch, you can check the numbers, 0-60, trap speed etc., the M3 is just faster.
You really think it’s quicker than an M3 CS 😂😂😂
I am a mercedes amg owner and I'll be the first to say, nobody does it like bmw. Wow!!
Wondering if the battery was preconditioned in drag mode with launch control grip level set to high? This setting automatically activates NGB(641hp) from a dig. Then use the NGB again on the way back
60k cheaper is nearly as quick. I’ll take the N.
It is a crappy Hyundai EV that no one cares about.
I wouldn't buy it even if it is 10% the price of the M3 CS
Until it’s time to find a charging station.
The CS range from M division is no joke! 💪
1:40 Did you turn on drag mode?
As both an ICE guy AND a BMW guy, the 5N is the first EV where I’ve wanted to kick the tires a little bit. What a great offering from Hyundai.
You shouldn't count a race when tge driver was sleeping at launch...immediate redo....
My thoughts exactly, what are these reaction times.
Wow, the BMW is literally 2x the price!!!
Also 3x the cost to fuel it and 100x the cost to maintain
@@lemongavine You owned both for a long period of time? Yeah, I thought so. Factor in depreciation and they will cost the same in the end.
@@oemj7147 the three EVs I have owned deprecated about the same as the five gas cars I’ve owned. But, I got $7500 back on each EV so they were better. Are you saying BMWs have good resale value? Also, you’re forgetting what the OP said….the BMW is 2x the cost up front. How are they the same in the end? I’m not seeing it.
@@lemongavine BMW M cars always had great resale value indeed. EVs went from good to catastrophic when it comes to resale value.
@@oemj7147 I pay a total of 27.000€ for a 4-year-lease (27.600$) of a 5N.
An M3 comp Touring would have leasing costs of 67.000€ (68.477$) in total.
The list price is 135.000€ (137.800$), with discount you can buy for ~ 110.000€ (112.425$).
112.425-27.600= 84.825$
So do you really think you can sell this M3 Touring in 4 years for 84.825$?
I doubt this!
They put the N in the "simulated shift mode" that makes the car significantly slower. These "car journalists" always fuck up.
M3 CS any day. Future Classic, Has a SOUL, Tuneable, 4 Seats & its one of the best 4 doors you can get out there .
M3CS is an amazing car! We have out 17K miles on ours in just 16 months even though we have many other cars!
i love that N the only 1 of 3 valid electric cars.
@@MoneyShifted what are the other two? I love the 5N and am curious what else is up there lol
valid according to who?
Yep, the 5N, the Taycan and the Xiaomi whatever
Not what i was expecting 😮
I wonder if you popped into drift mode on the turn with the ioniq n if that would help. I'd also like to point out you can get the ironiq n for 65k new.
... so it's basically a driver's race... the CS runs well & definitely seemed to respond to the arm drop better... and if you've ever watched Street Outlaws you've learned how the advantage of a car or so jump at the start is magnified in the rest of the run... both great cars & props to the CS today!...😊
I hate these drag races where they can’t even start at the same time
Why wasn’t N grin Boost used in the first race?
For me both top 10 cars in the last 5-10 years. 2 masterpieces! ❤
Very impressive for a company's first attempt at an EV and performance focused car
The ioniq 5N went when the arms were down and th m3CS when they started moving and the gap at launch is the same as at the line. The bmw is faster but in this race it's a tie for me and considering the price the ioniq is my pick !
Hangng close to the bumper for half the cost is pretty good.
If all you care about is straight line speed
Did BMW pay you guys off to take a little snooze at the line ??? You can clearly see the brake lights on the N while the Beemer takes off !! Both times .
Result would be the same 10 times out of 10
The bmw destroys it either way and its a hot day
Oh please. The 5N can't even beat a m4 comp xdrive. Let alone a m3 CS. M3 CS regularly gets a 10.7 QM time so this was alot slower then usual and everyone knows with the right driver it should of pulled more Gs then the hyundai thats just simple physics and carbon ceramic brakes. Both drivers were to scared to turn that animal
Gas and ///M forever.
Hyundai fanboys are crying
Only a 10 second cooldown on the NGB button. Why not use it off the line and then again on the way back? 30+ seconds for total time, could use it twice. Think the M would probably still take it, but would be interesting to see
Launch control auto engages N Boost for the best launch. If you tap N boost it disengage launch control and says "conditions not met" i think adding a small bit of ESC will give them a better launch. Motortrend got 2.8 and 11.
@@lancec3509 Oh thats interesting, Ty for the info
@lancec3509 keep in mind this only happens if the car is in High Grip LC mode if you use any of the other 2 modes it won't activate the 650hp it would just be 601hp
Great race
What’s so HARD about starting at the same time 🤷🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️… I need this job !!!!
Honestly had the M not jumped and the N not slept at the line, the second race would have been closer.
Closer than i thought but the M3 just edged out the N. But for the average person, the N is going to be more in their price range and be 99% as fast as the M3 CS in a straight line.
Wild to see the GAS car off the line first...
The acceleration on the M looks and sounds so brutal.
For the $$. Half to be exact, I'm taking the 5N. Also, because it was really close
The ev will lose half its value within 6 months.. sensible money would buy the ice bmw
@@youtubed9695😂😂😂 neither of these vehicles is about sensible money … lol 😅
@youtubed9695 that's why you lease it. Then buy the depreciated value after
@Paff805 if your lease it why are you bothered about list price?? EV deprecate so the lease cost is more to compensate it would be similar price to lease the bmw
Yeah because bmw really keep their value 🤣@@youtubed9695
One thing about M3CS, Is it won't disappoint you in drag races. I was on my feet the entire race.
The m3 better win for that price tag..
And it barely won, per the times.
gotta remember the M3 has better interior too.
Can we see the battery level after the first run?
OK so now you can race the $65K IONIQ 5N against a $260K car, since you've done the $130K one. Why not?
The regular m3 comp xdrive was only 0.1 seconds slower ya know and it’s $86k.
🤣
9:47 how could either win? 5N with max battery clearly just lost convincingly. The bmw at all times gives u the same performance and tbey dont heat soak at all thanks to forged internals. Unless its 110 degrees outside the m3 XDrive winning every single time. Also the bmw weighs considerably less and has carbon ceramics. Theres no world where it should of got the same cornering capability of a ioniq 5N. I get that u guys dont own these cars but the m3 could of been pushed around that corner way harder.
For half the price, I'm going with the N.
Wait a year or 2 and the n will be n will be half msrp. Ev’s depreciate fast.
And then battery replacement puts you at the same price haha
Spoken like a true car enthusiast…. NOT
@@someguyprobably good thing the batteries are covered for 10 years. Who keeps a car for 10 years anymore?
@@GTownSinger me who dailies an Audi A4 B5: nah no one does that anymore
Im surprised at how late off the pedal they were in the Hyundai when theyve been on the button before
So we're racing $120k cars vs $70k cars now. I guess thats one way to win.
Hyundai Teases Upcoming Ioniq 5 N 'DK Edition' Packing Big Rear Wing. Will we get that here in the USA?
I didnt see the ioniq losing the drag race portion. Helluva car, that m3.
I would've used the boost on the first stretch, get caught up from that BMW launch
🤣…who thought this would be a close race ?!…M all day…we just watched a pointless boost button…probably should have used a non M series BMW
Dam that Hyundai is impressive!
_Super hot_ (?) Recorded when? California santa ana's that bad right now?
I like how you would put the BMW in its sport mode but the Tesla Model 3 Performance in track mode rather than it’s sport mode…I call for a reshoot
What’s a B M Do U? @0:07
You guy need to U-Drag a:
ALFA ROMEO Giulia Quadrifoglio Q4
That thing handles beyond amazing in corners
So basically you need to spend 2x as much on ICE to beat an EV, of course at this price you can get into a plaid or even a taycan so....
You can buy M3 xDrive, especially at longer tracks to see the difference.
No, the CS will be a classic, while no one will know what a 5N is in 5 years.
@@antimatter4733 Standart Competition, not the xDrive?
@freakattack9616 that's hilarious, they release a new CS every year and make a ton of them. As for the 5n you realise that they're gonna keep making them as well, in 5 years there will likely be an even more powerful model with a graphene battery and 1000hp 🤣
For me, it looks like you guys were sleeping on the ionic 5 N because in both races, you guys didn’t launch property or BMW pay you guys
What’s the actual distance you travel in the race? To me anything less than a one mile race is unfair because certain cars keep pulling through the gears and certain cars start better.
Nobody wants to be ahead of m3 so they would see that face from the rear or side mirrors.
The fact that an Ioniq is even considered worthy enough to race an M3 is a feat in itself. Hyundai must be patting themselves on their back.
suv vs sports sedan?
These guys cant drive... how is it that the m3 has 1 or 2 car lengths entering the corner and the N catches it and turn at the same time, meanwhile the m3 is lighter and has better brakes.
The m3 shouldve won by a larger gap
When are we getting a gtr on the channel
Never. It’s old dated and boring. Lmao
