The best way to do this is to add something. Instead of telling them to get rid of it. What should they add. Example. If you have 7 TV subscriptions and you do a flower and food garden it will take up your time and you don't need the TV subs cause you are busy. So add stuff. I know that sounds weird but add activities that are minimalist related.
Just echoing all the other voices that have already said it, but the addition of T.K. Coleman is amazing. I have been really appreciating his perspective, insights and way of explaining everything. Thank you all.
Can you emagine the dangers! And emagine how they could be local problems and unrelated to problems, could be heard all over the world! All those important voices wanting somthing worth seeing for the day to day, so life can make sence and have some type of finalized meaning! I'm not a label, nor am I a consumer! Except mmm mmm mmm looking up this definiton (finalized)was a thought of a brighter future! You know without reconstructing some things, such as poor trash phycology like making people feel they where previous vershions of you or this or that!
Ok, so at the very start of this video I was thinking of the very simple life I had as a child. Climbing the apple 🍏 tree in the front yard to watch the cars go by, drawing a hopscotch on the small cement slab in the backyard, finding strawberries 🍓 in the mini garden my father planted….I learned minimalism from their example just like Joshua mentioned in the way he creates the environment for his daughter to learn. I have said as an adult the one thing my parents led by example is having very little debt. It’s taken me a long time to go back to this. I was swayed by all of the “things” in the world I “thought” I needed. I think it’s a beautiful you all help within the school setting on reinforcing this thought process with finances. Finances & simple life skills should always be taught in schools even if children already know them it reinforces being able to function self sufficiently. Great video guys 💕
We need all kinds! Infact I love hearing of mininalist people! I think alot of it is the parent environment we grew up in! My parents seemed to be consumers to put that kind, cushy and lite sounding! So I was a minimalist and adapted to change! I don't mind as I am a loving person and got a chance to see life for what it is! So thiers no turning back for me, the issue is seeing how we can all blend within a larger scale and being able to be who we want and also down size apon our choice! What I mean when I say issue is, people are not providing full change! When I see police on our roads I know the buisness is still dirty and they want old ways that just don't work! When I have seen bitter people brainwash and then get caught time and time again, I see no point to pretending I didn't see these pests as to think that being a minimalist will resolve these issues because it won't! Those losers think they can put a clown costume on and act like big shots and lie to people about laws that honestly don't exist! So the more people who want neutral phycology, the more people have freedom of choice! These jobs, roles, costumes are not honest desires of what is important within people's lifes, they are just holding on to old dangerous outtdated polotics that serve no purpose to any of us and no one can achieve thier full potential with any path they choose! So hopfuly we will no longer see these dirty buisnesses selling problems to society so they can keep the smutt peddling cycle running! People are fine just the way they are! Thiers plenty of work that dosen't require putting on a mask and painting the side of your car with buisnesses that don't actualy exist, paper registry, fear paints and so on! Life has to have meaning!!!! And those things won't provide that! So I guess people on a large scale might be minimalists also! They just might have a large heart and also be aware of thier birth name as to not have dummies use name labels or trickery to mock thier intelligence!
As a mother of 6, I find it interesting to see how each of my children respond to the concepts of different philosophies. 4 out of my 6 kids, will choose to have less naturally. The others need a little more encouragement. Sometimes it's as simple as giving them a great why. I think parents are the ones that they will either choose to emulate or be completely different then. A lot of times a child of a hoarder will go the opposite and then their own child will hoard. The pendulum will swing from each generation. I think the biggest reason is that the real problem was never addressed. When the real problem is addressed, the why is discovered and taught to the kids. Why have less? Why buy less? When we can get our cultures to see these, then there will be a change. It's also interesting to think about when I was in high school back in the 80s, it was so weird to recycle or think green. Now, even if an individual doesn't do these things, they at least understand and don't make fun of you for it. Minimalism as a movement is catching on. In a decade or so there probably won't be a world full of minimalists but it will be commonplace enough that it's a respected and admired way of life. Culturally, we're having fewer people that lived through the depression. The lack that came from that time period created an interesting way of life. We went from a time of living with our means to using credit to try and fill the voids. Mental health, lack mindset, and the like are many of the why's we need to address.
If I'd had Matt Nathanson as my school teacher at some point in life, I'd probably be living as a writer. I mean, I'd be a female James Joyce or George Orwell or something along those lines. So tragic that pur generations were educated largely by teachers and parents that intoxicated us with self-defeating falacies. That is probably one of the reasons why we're so prone to addiction, including alcohol and... stuff.
TK - love your education comments. If anyone needs a reinforcement example is watch a cat. A cat "knows" what to do. The sad part is that a cat is probably 90% resting 10% doing. We seem to want to do the opposite. We are the only species on this planet that is 90% doing and 10% resting. Might be able to do things better.
I've had this distinct concern for a while.. That Ryan is on the way out/moving into a different direction. Seeing that they were first adding another regular host and then him "going on vacation" ... Doesn't do much to help ease this feeling 😞 Am I the only one thinking this?
Hi Joshua, I am interested to know what is your point of view on religions and their practices, are those creating emotional or mental clutter to people or the other way around? Do you already have podcast on this topic?
This would be a GREAT question for a future podcast episode. Would you be willing to send a voice memo to podcast@theminimalists.com so that Joshua and Ryan can answer your question live on the show? In the voice memo, just state your name and city (or use a fake name if you want to be anonymous) followed by your concise question (write it down first); also mention if you are a Patreon subscriber, so we can prioritize your question. (And if you have more than one question, that's great-just send separate voice memos.)
Would you share what you've chosen instead for Ella's education? I've heard a lot of simple parents choosing to remove their children from publix school and either homeschool or enroll in Montessori school where they allow the child to choose their education path within limitations so they thrive how they want.

The main reason for poverty is not consumerism. Poor people spent much less than affluent ones. The reason for poverty is the economic and political system. High living costs and low wages.
What is the opposite of consumerism? Minimalism? One definition of "consume" is to buy or purchase goods or services, the the exact opposite would be to not purchase goods or services.
I'm 72. When I was young, if we wanted shiny stuff, we saved candy wrappers, and used a hole punch. We used beans and seeds to make mosaics or as counters for games. We walked to the store. I didn't grow up in the country. My kids took busses and made things from cardboard. We all went to public schools. If you show love by doing instead of shopping, it sticks. Tina, Al's wife
What does where your daughter go to school have to do with this topic. 90 percent of children attend public schools and they need support to educate the next generation of workers. My kids attended public schools and one is a paramedic and one is an ER doctor. No need to bash public education it works for most
@@snafuAB just who is going to educate the vast majority of children. There are not enough private schools. Many parents both work and there are many single parents. We need a robust public education system to educate all.
I am not a parent. I do not know from personal experience about dealing with a child in public school, private, or homeschool. However; your statement that the public school route was poisonous has me wondering about some things. I know you said you are just talking about your daughter but if she is only 9 or 10 years old and I think most children start their first year of school at 5 years old. I am assuming your perspective and experience with her in the public school system is from maybe a couple of cities but not the entire state or definitely not the entire public school system in the United States that your daughter has attended. I think the public school system sounds like they get a very low appreciation and opinion from certain people. Now it seems some parents are fawning and/or promoting private school or homeschooling.
@Heather O'Toole It sounds unfortunate that some parents seem to have what sounds like an unpleasant experience, little to no hope, confidence, or whatever adjective to describe their feelings towards their public school situation. However; I would guess most people have gone to the public school system and most parents will send their children to public school at least for the majority of their school years. I do not think most parents can afford private schools at least not schools of a certain caliber. I do not think most parents have the time, skills and other resources to effectively and in a quality manner homeschool their child or children. I think the idea of homeschooling may sound nice and impressive to some people in theory but in actual application and reality of homeschool is not for most.
How do you think we can best empower future generations to get rid of the consumer mindset?
The best way to do this is to add something. Instead of telling them to get rid of it. What should they add. Example. "Minimalism is the natural state for human beings." Completely agree!! 👏 👏 👏 👏
Love you guys, I enjoy getting rid of extra stuff, it is liberating.
As an educator, I can say teaching kids how to work together, solve problems and apply knowledge is important for success.

Excellent clip. Minimalism is our natural state. Excellent philosophy.
Wow, so well said!!! Now if yall could just educate the educators...
Minimalism will set you free, the true freedom. And it does come natural by realizing the difference between needs and wants and social comparison.
TK ALWAYS BRINGS THE HEAT! HE IS SUCH A GREAT ADDITION TO THE SHOW.
Glad I found this channel
Debt is worse than death and taxes.
Abundance is there. Just need to cut that string. wow!
I love the idea of getting rid of the consumer mindset. I did and now at the tender age of 46 I don't spend much of anything.
Freedom is our default. With freedom minimalism is instinctive. We don't deliberately choose encumbrance. Societal drilling on our subconscious.
Thank you!
Is there somewhere I could buy the financial literacy training for my middle school children?
We’d recommend reaching out to Ramsey Solutions directly to see if you might be able to gain access.
@@TheMinimalists thank you!

Good stuff
Africa is the only continent in the world that lies in all four hemispheres.
