Thank you for taking the time to make and translate this video for those of us that cannot speak Korean!!! I know how much work this video took to make so I just really wanna say thank you, I watched every minute of it and I think you chose great people to interview. It’s also really hard to interview people so you did great in my opinion ✨🫰
Are you sure his collegue ain't going to come back and "joke" about how they are married with 3 kids ? If that turned me down, I am 100% sure it turn off David's Real Potential futur wife... Just saying.
Nice to watch you interviewing random ppl on the street again. 😊 It's no surprise, S. Korean still doesn't acknowledge how much BTS influenced the world to pay attention to S. Korea. Sad.
The media is the response to that, they don't play dirty so public opinion is manipulated to make them think they aren't a big deal and they are just another k-pop group, while others groups small feats get exaggerated and made to look like unprecedented achievements when in reality that's not the case
The people interviewed in the video now were talking about kpop singers that they liked or were impressed by their age. It's ridiculous to see a UA-cam comment like this when I never even used to ignore or denigrate bts. If the question was that they're the most famous kpop boy group in the world right now, everyone would have picked bts.
That Kpop star has become totally westernized twerking, stripping, and letting her assets hang out. It’s nothing to be proud of. She’s a disgrace to Kpop.
The home youth market is shrinking, so of course these music companies need to look at the world market. American music industry has been hammered big time compared to the 90s. K-pop industry leaders (and talent) must see an opportunity to grow their business overseas or die slowly at home.
If Kmedia and Knets push some idols to erase themselves, harass them for every little thing, then good agencies should all relocate overseas. They don't deserve the hard work & talent these kids put into their craft only to be bombarded with negativity day and night.
Overseas is also the same... don't be fool like as if overseas media isn't bad with their celebrities... overseas fans like u guys are the ones making the music extinct... nowadays kpop music is so boring like they are following the pop way which is stupid....
@@mdilham5237American celebrities don't erase themselves from hate and apologize for no reason majority of the time and they don't normalize being stepped all over or bend to the will of others. of course on a business standpoint they do to a degree but not to the extreme as korean celebrities idk if the drugs make up for it but there's much less celebrities erasing themselves from public and media hate globally than in korea.
Idk I've eaten pizza with an Italian at an Italian pizza place (as in they do it the old fashioned way) and they sounded extremely aggravated at the idea of things like pineapple ham pizza. Pizza is Italian but sounded like they think of it as something else that just happens to be on dough too.
0:07 i also find it interesting that there WERE foreigners like you just said, (and there might have been some sort of backlash and not accepting) but it seems when the foreigners are of a darker skin tone (or any pocs that have melanin in the kpop industry, from choreographers to models) thats when it seems to be a huge problem people start to speak up against
I think this was bound to happen, the more accessible a genre of music to the world is, the more it adapts and changes, i mean look at HipHop, from black artists in the hoods to nw the world and it's also changed so much. I don't think Kpop is "ruined", I think it's just being adaptive😊❤
But Kpop exists because of African American culture. Before Seo Taiji and Boys started copying African American culture Koreans were listening to trot music.
At the end of the day it is music and with out the western influences you would not have Kpop or any kind of pop hince the pop which is western unless you go back to traditional Korean music why make this an issue ,all music can be shared and enjoyed. Also you have j pop and other countries who also has been influenced also by pop music. Too me K-pop music is pop music that has been perfected visually with dancing like I use to enjoyed back in the day ,pop music use to be this way ,but not on the same scale as the Kpop industry as a matter of fact hardly any western artists dance anymore a nore do we have any musical groups which have also faded into history like we has when I grew up back in the 70’s 80’s and 90’s 2000’ the artists are lazy these days all they want to do is make money with no passion or effort in their music and videos.that is why western fan are craving the Kpop music.
K-POP is literally POP music in Korean. “In a journal article, John Lie quotes Lee Soo Man, founder of SM Entertainment, one of the Big Three Korean entertainment agencies: “South Korea has best consumed black music in Asia. Just as J-pop was built on rock, we made K-pop based on black music” “JYP and YG were heavily inspired by Black American Music and JYP modelled the trainee system after Motown. He's said he idolized Berry Gordy. When JYP and Bang Hi-Hyuk went to America in 2003, they spent time learning about the American music industry and Black Music.”
U right about the motown Trainee system but what i found even more suprising was it actually was the japanes market that took it in before kpop got its bloom. bUT THEY NEVER REALLY UTERLITIZE the same way as the k-pop market. SM was actually the first who use the trainee system before jyp and even seo taji and boys. The name SM (TOWN) came from MO ( TOWN)
This is so true. Everything about KPop was originally based on Black American music and dancing. You can see the huge influence of hiphop and R n B as well. Korean music changed when the American soldiers especially the black soldiers came to help the Koreans during and after the war. Many were listening to American music. Their music changed from folk music to pop music after the war. Now that Kpop is going more global, it’s getting more amalgamation back into pop and not as distinguishable from pop music. You can see the changes already in the music when Kpop is using Afro beats in their music which is infulenced by black artists such as Tyla. Kpop is following the trends from the west especially from the US, latin america and africa…

You make more money doing tours so you need the International audience, especially if your not a group that is well known in Korea ( Dreamcatcher, Kard, Loona just to name a few). Dreamcatchers songs were mostly in Korean but I still listened to them because of the rock sound and their experimental b-sides. It's unfortunate but it really does come down to popularity.
Yes their market is shrinking in South Korea as they the nation is getting smaller and smaller so with all those group they have to look else where for fans with money so spend. They have already entered the S.E.A nations but it's still not big enough pool for to KPOP continue. So they are going global now as otherwise the Kpop industry will fall in on itself.

As someone who loved '90s-'00s American pop and rnb groups, as well as '10s- now kpop groups heavy! I think kpop is a subgenre of pop that even moreso emphasizes groups being triple threats: singing, rapping, and dancing to a catchy song. So even if it's a different language or people from other countries, you can still feel the kpopness if they have those qualities. Just like when I first got into kpop I recognized it's likeness to American pop even though they were singing in Korean.
I'd been watching kdrama since early 2000's and was hooked but never ventured into k-culture or the music. My very first kpop song/MV I heard was TVXQ Microtic. I loved that song and played it to death but I never 'stanned' them or actively looked for any other songs or groups. Psy got a global hit with Gangnam Style but it was more of a novelty 'one hit wonder' here in the UK. Came across a couple of BigBang songs after that I liked a lot but again never stanned nor followed them in any fan sense. Fast forward to 2017 BTS found me and I fell hard and fast. I consumed everything I could find then bought albums, merch, joined ARMY, saw them in concert. I am still in love with the guys to this day and am 100% ARMY. I do like Dreamcatcher and think they are not as recognized as they should be but again I haven't actively stanned them just listen out for their new songs sometimes. BTS was my gateway into wanting to learn more about Korean culture and it's people. I honestly think The Hallyu wave and Kpop was 10% down to Drama's and 90% down to BTS alone and their achievements in the west. Sadly it seems the Korean public do not recognize nor acknowledge BTS's part in this accomplishment.

I think bcs of huge western influence in kpop songs recently led to this discussion. Supernova is the song in recent times which feels kpop genre, idk it gives that distinguished kpop feeling which u don't see that much in recent kpop songs And yes KARINA is GOD ❤❤
@@Wise_Poetics so ??? K-pop was always influenced by Western music but still they were able to distinguish them and that has become quite rare in recent times. And this was my point. And for Supernova I felt reminded me of original k-pop bcs of it's sound as whole ,i mean can u hear this kind of song in western scene, no.
Really nice to get the different perspective on the same topic. I like what the guy said about K-pop being for younger audience. I wonder what they could do with that genre for a slightly older audience.
Kpop is a whole new type/concept of business marketing strategy in music industry. From trainees training period, idol discipline, to concept, music genre, MV productions scale, marketing promotions , all these elements make the western so interested in it. To me, it's okay to have non-korean in the group, as long as they keep the music flavor, taste and color in the songs, kpop is still a Big Hit. I have listened kpop since Fin.K.L. , I just love kpop music.
They market Kia, Samsung and Hyundai worldwide, english versions, etc. Should be ok with the entertainment industry? So long as Korea benefits (the profits and glory), it should be considered "K". :)
gobal kpop fans or just normal people will say BTS, majority of the time. Especially here in the usa ,when we saw real time how bts effected kpop positive here. But does korea don't see or understand how bts influence kpop gobally? Kpop ablums bein sold in physical stores, kpop catgoerys in award show now(Billbaord just host a award show, to find the next bts), heck bts are in some history books etc etc. It's a shame how downplay & discredit they are there.
They really don't understand what BTS has done to K-pop and Korea. As a BTS fan this makes me very frustrated but at the same time if we think about it, they are in Korea how would they fully understand it? Koreans who live abroad, immigrants and children of immigrants understand it very clearly, but Koreans in Korea don't understand it.

To think BTS is a group with all Korean members and so far the only Kpop group I know (just within my knowledge) whose name is in Korean, but not appreciated in SK. So crazy to me. But maybe it’s because people in Korea no longer see them as Kpop?

@@kkamagi my comment wasnt about the people interviewed or their answers. It was just a commentary on kpop. Dont be quick to judge. And people can express their opinions.
@@cjaeyr If I tell you my opinion as a Korean, I can tell you that Koreans don't disparage BTS' achievements at all. Rather, I can tell you that it is one of the most proud KPOP singers and one of the fastest rising singers in terms of celebrity articles. However, because there are many singers who are doing well in the Korean entertainment industry and many Koreans who are not interested in K-pop itself, it may seem relatively less enthusiastic than overseas.
What many don't know or realize is that K-PoP originates from western cultures. The R&B, soulful sounds and melodic tunes were copied from Western cultures. I'm not saying all of K-Pop originated from the west, but certainly much of it does. Also, many, not all, K-Pop song writers were and are also foreigners. Also many of the choreography is developed by foreigners as well. Many Koreans don't know this and many do. We all know K-Pop rap and hip hop does not originate in Korea.
I was just going to say this. K-pop originally based on Western music. The music companies especially SM used the Motown training system as a base for their trainee program and like you said a huge number of Western songwriters have written and still write a lot of their songs, also western producers produce them. So the “gatekeeping” when a lot of appropriating has gone on is ironic.
To claim many Koreans don’t know the western influence is extremely naive. When did you take time to survey the Koreans? At the end of the day most contemporary music is influenced by western music one way or another. However kpop stands out due to several distinct features. These include its fusion of genres, complex song structures, dynamic use of both vocals and rap, and its integration of Korean language and cultural themes. K-pop also emphasizes visually stunning performances with intricate choreography. A unique element is 뽕끼 (ppongkki), which adds emotional depth and nostalgia, drawing from traditional Korean music. While K-pop borrows from global influences, it combines these with uniquely Korean elements, creating a genre that’s semi-authentic and distinct from Western pop. As a long time kpop fan it’s but disappointing that some of these unique features disappearing to cater to more broader western markets.
Even the Kpop trainee system is not from Korea. It’s rooted in Motown, which is African American. Rap wasn’t created by Kpop. R&B wasn’t created by Kpop.
@@AlfonsoEspina The K-pop training system differs significantly from Motown's artist development approach. In K-pop, trainees often start at a very young age and undergo years of intense training in singing, dancing, acting, and even language skills. For instance, idols like BTS's Jungkook and BLACKPINK's Jennie trained for several years before debuting. The process is competitive, with regular evaluations and eliminations, ensuring only the most polished performers debut. This contrasts with Motown, where artists like Diana Ross and the Supremes or Stevie Wonder were often signed with their talent already developed. While Motown did provide artist development, including lessons in choreography and etiquette through Maxine Powell’s "finishing school," the process was far less intense and formalized compared to K-pop. Moreover, Motown’s focus was largely on the American market, whereas K-pop companies, such as SM, YG, and JYP Entertainment, intentionally train idols with a global audience in mind. They include language training (e.g., English, Japanese, Chinese) and blend diverse music styles to appeal internationally.
David, seriously, how did you find so many intelligent and interesting people on the street? That rarely happens here (US). Or did you have to ditch a lot of duds along the way to get this? Anyway, good questions, nice work!
When I studied in Korea, an agency actually 'recruited' us from a language speaking school to be interviewed on an episode about foreigners using Korean beauty products. We were all told to meet at one location and interviewed at different areas within that location. It makes a lot of sense because you don't waste time finding people willing to speak on the street. Not saying that's what David has done but it's common practice in Korea to have people prepped and ready to interview beforehand.
The KPOP back then and today in general : The male idols will fully cover their bodies with shirts and pants (actual pants) while the female idols will wear shirt but with their pants removed (the "safety" shorts are just underwear length, and skirts that are just dress/blouse lifted up all the way to the waist level to look half naykurd) so young underage girls can be influenced to wear similarly as well. You're welcome.
You know, I don't think I've ever heard someone try to argue rap music is no longer "black" just because there's people like Eminem, and foreigners participating.
Actually, that’s not true. When he started his skin colour was an issue, I’m sure many people cried cultural appropriation ( or its equivalent) at the time. He persisted and proved himself.
Music does belong to the world, but local cultures also exist as well. Electronic music is a good example, Detroit Techno and Chicago House changed the world, but if they just started doing what was popular somewhere else we wouldn't have had that beautiful specific sound that grew up within those cities and cultures...and they're still doing the same thing today and are well respected/well beloved. Korea's value in art is its culture much like any other place, imo just make the best stuff you can and people will seek it out regardless. I assume it's why westerners became Kpop fans in the first place, there's no need to overtly or purposefully appeal to others, as Rick Rubin said, "The audience comes last."
@@thecoolintroverttv8381for the movement in culture it made, yes, but there inside can also be found sounds and beats from other cultures as well that melded into what hip hop is today.
I'm going to state my opinion even though I haven't watched the entire video yet (sorry david). Kpop is still Kpop. The music is still sung in mostly Korean, even though there are some English words mixed in. That's like saying an R&B artist can't make a country album. THEY CAN. It's all about the music. Not the person behind the music. If someone said a song isn't Kpop because a Koreans isnt singing it, I would think they are bigoted racist. Kpop is a genre. That's my opinion.
The problem Kpop has is that at its core it’s a genre that emulates rather than pioneers. Meaning if you swap out the Korean lyrics for English lyrics more likely than not the song will sound like it’s a Western song. Kpop has always had foreign writers and producers working within the genre behind the scenes, to give it a certain feel. Where as Western artist don’t call in Kpop producers to give them sounds/lyrics.
K-Pop has always been “Kosmopolitan Pop” rather than “Korean Pop”. Sure, it is/used to be mainly in Korean, but that is simply because the origin of it comes from Korea, where they speak Korean. But it is not like it would be focused on or around Korea itself, but more about taking anything from all around the world and making it work together. But anyway… even if we focus on the language aspect… isn’t it weird to define a musical genre based on language? The composition of a song does not change if you change the vocals… And also for example in the case of genre called Dutch House, nobody expect the artist to be Dutch… So when you think about it deeper, technically defining Kpop as a musical genre does not make any sense… These all “letter-pops” like Kpop, Jpop etc exist because it symbolize an idol scene of each country, because in Asian countries people see big difference if you are singer or idol singer, if you are a rapper or idol rapper. Whereas in the Western part of the world we call One Direction, Lady Gaga and Lana Del Rey as Pop artists and we don’t make any “idol scene”for One Direction and similar acts like these. So Kpop represents the idol scene of Korea and it is up to the labels/the scene in which language (or by what races of people) they want their scene to be represented by
If you want to nationalize music then I don't want anyone who isn't black listening, talking, dancing, using, or appropriating rap or hip hop or RNB or any black artist (Frank the Goat Ocean )
Korea is such a small market in other for the kpop companies to make money and survive in the music world they nee the English lyrics to reach a bigger audience
I will 100% stand by my word's, Kpop was a very niche community in West, and it wasn't until BTS blew up that we seen Kpop Industry take advantage of it, Kpop neglected BTS which resulted in BTS building their way around the industry and using social media, mostly interactions wjth fan's online, kpop didn't see this tactic as important as they were stuck in the tradition of what it used to be, making the Idol's less exposed to fan's, BTS changed that, most group's today follow BTS foot steps, we wouldn't have Album's selling in Western country's if not for Bangtan, we wouldn't have many thing's most company's do for their Idol's, like a Pre Release Single before album's or before the main title track is released
I feel with BTS, they expose Korea thru their music by including Korean Instrument's like with Idol and so on,no other Idol to my knowledge has done that, BTS literally sung about Korea especially in early year's MaCity Paldongangsan - could be incorrect spelling Other group's went with very Americanized more than anything
I couldn't agree more!!! I second everything you said. BTS weren't loved and supported by their own country people when they first debuted since the influence of the big 3 at that time were insane and BigHit, a relatively small company could do nothing for their group in their own country. So, when they went abroad for their first Kcon, Bang PD saw people there loved BTS and were supportive of them, that's why their target market was changed to the Western market and them already being very active on UA-cam and Twitter played a big part in introducing them to the world outside of SK. When they won their first BBMAs, I remember how the fans of other groups called it a paper award and also shit talked about them for catering to the Western market but BTS kept doing their thing and eventually they started to blow up globally and after that, they started to get invited to talk shows after talk shows. They weren't like a one hit wonder or the name they built for themselves wasn't temporary, they proved they came there to stay and they absolutely killed it and then they started to even top charts there. After that, the fandoms who criticized BTS for 'being westernized,' saw how big BTS were getting there, they started to wish BTS's success in the West for their faves too lol. Now look how every Kpop group is being westernized just to succeed there like BTS. Like you said, BTS are 'the first Korean act' or even 'the first Asian act' to do a lot of things which have gone down in history because BTS did them first. Other groups might break a lot of records BTS holds but the 'first artist to.......' will forever be for Bangtan. Other fandoms deny to acknowledge BTS's impact and how it is because of them that their faves are even getting a chance in the western market when their own faves have thanked BTS are paving the way😏🥳
@@Ha-young_is_Just_Too_Fineand yeah, they include a lot of their cultural stuff in their songs and they have always been very vocal about their love for their country. Haters dragged them for being too westernized and that is how 'Idol' came to life as the claims about them being too westernized were getting loud during that time. And, these haters had no problem when their faves released so many English songs and some even a whole album in English but they dragged BTS through the mud for releasing 3 English songs. They say BTS is no more Kpop for that reason. Bloody hypocrites! Even about Yoongi's recent case, their own people tried to cancel him and treated him like a criminal by giving false news but they aren't doing anything about another idol who sexually violated and assaulted a minor. These ungrateful bitches forgot what BTS has done for their country for all these years. I feel bad for them, seriously!
@@sohnamD I cann't see in the near future any group breaking all the records and winning the amount of music awards Bangtan hold until years after BTS retire. They are sort of artist that only come around once in a life time.
I could say a lot, but people wouldn't get it. And I don't want to type a essay. All I will say is, if people don't see the hypocrisy with the entire subject, then that's sad.

My first kpop groups were big bang and 2ne1 bts i also became a fan in 2015 as well as shinee, exo, snsd, etc, im wondering if the kpop industry is darker than it is, or im just imagining things, i don't want to it to turn to Hollywood but im wondering if there are things that go on about that people don't know about, im unsure about the fifth gen kpop groups i prefer 1-4 and i am probably going to stop listening after 4th. I am really unsure how i feel about kpop now
There are definitely secrets. First, when you see young girls and women perform for audiences of older men is a red flag. But even the young boys and men are mistreated. Asia as a continent is far from perfect.
I’m a Westener who doesn’t listen to K-Pop because a lot of it sounds very soul-less to me tbh. I prefer Afrobeats and Latin music as new growing genres.
Not gonna lie, I got into kpop thanks in part to the pretty men and women true, but I've always enjoyed the fact that I found myself singing in Korean! It was and still is a whole new language to me, but learning even a small part of it through the music has been an amazing experience. I do love when the artists mix in some English and appreciate the effort of them speaking/singing in a foreign language (kinda like bringing two cultures together which is always awesome), but nowadays...some of these concepts are just too Western and if ya know you know, not all Western ideas should even see the light of day. I would like for the Korean public to remember singing and talking in another language can be a wonderful opportunity and the same goes for the people in the West, but please Korea, you don't have to lose your own authentic creativity.
The only thing that makes kpop what it is ...is the language. Everything else is taken from different cultures. THATS WHERE THE POP COMES FROM. Its all about pop culture and you know who leads in pop culture. African Americans! So as long as the lyrics are in korean..its kpop!
@@AlfonsoEspinaI just added my opinion because I am shaking my head. First Kpop idols have always had English lyrics in their songs. I mean I am African American and I don't think that I have ever worn a head bandana outside of my home especially a blue or red one. But hey what do I know.

If the person is Korean-American and never been to Korea at all and don't speak Korean and none of their songs are in Korean......but they do pop music....are they k-pop?
what do you expect , no man is an island. at the rate your population is dwindling at a fast rate for your entertainment industry to flourish you need to integrate your idol groups with foreigners, oherwise sooner or later K pop will lose its glory
I will not be surprised that fame and beauty of Kpop will ruminate throughout the world. I am not gonna be surprised that Eastern European countries (i.e. Russia, Poland, Bulgaria , etc) wil take KPop idea and copycat , make their own pop band and imitate Korean 🎵 ⭐ s
Kpop has its roots in global western music. It is now going back to its roots. It hasn’t ruined Kpop. But it has ruined Kpop fandoms because they are no longer free to be toxic in the dark corners in private bullying their idols to d*ath without the whole world calling them out and asking them what is wrong with them. It has ruined things for KPOP STANS. It hasn’t ruined Kpop. Let’s be clear.
Here is my reality here in September 2024 : Kpop took good care of me. I don't Know where the group named BTS is going so my Journey stops here, so I can visit Korea for the first time in my life.
KPop 🎵 is just amazing. So many beautiful singers with great voices and professional dancing. The songs and melodies are simply 🔥. Ranging from very gentle to rhythmic melodies that makes one get up and dance. Think about of Coffee! It is worldwide delicacy, so is KPop! Absolutely ❤ it. It is more gentle than German pop music, which I am also a great fan !
I know it’s a business at the end of the day and the foreign members are to get into those foreign markets but when they started to hire foreign composers for kpop songs is when they lost me. The songs basically lost that sticky sweet catchy addictive kpop essence and feels like western pop songs sung in Korean . If I want to listen to western pop songs, I’ll just listen to western artists. Further dilution of kpop is happening where the rest of the world is copying kpop formula and starting their own idol groups calling it their own pop. Cpop, Qpop, Tpop, Ppop, global pop to name a few. Just like anything, when something becomes global hit, a lot of other people will try to emulate the formula to jump on the bandwagon.
They hired 'foreign' composers very early on in the history of Kpop. They also stole songs never paid for them and some are still doing that but with a huge international audience of older mature consumers we are able to say hey did you pay for that sample did you get permission from that artist to use their song? oh yes and we also alert western artist by going to their social media counts and letting Western artist know their work has been plagerised.
@@eileencritchley4630 how early? I feel like the first and second gen kpop songs were still mostly composed by Koreans. It was starting with third gen kpop songs that I felt like they lost some of the kpop vibe.
@@eileencritchley4630 The plagiarism and appropriating was and is still real. Seo Taiji and Boys in 1992 was distinctive music that is now considered the forerunner of K-pop. Teddy Riley and other Black American songwriters and producers wrote songs and produced for SM starting in the late 90’s. Given the shear amount of songs K-pop artists as a whole have to release in a year, how many Korean songwriters/producers are in a country the about the size of Indiana? Some sources estimate that roughly 80% of K-pop songs and 30%-40% of J-pop songs released today have ties to American or other Western sources. If Koreans want K-pop to be “ethnically Korean” then stop using western songwriters, producers, choreographers and any “western influence”. Go back to singing Trot and even that isn’t Korean - The irony of gatekeeping a music genre that wasn’t created by them in the first place.
@@epiphany0259 In fact they weren't they always as they had help from American song writers, composer and producers oh and some European song writers, composers and prouducer's.
KPop was never Korean in the first place. If Seo Taiji (or Lee Sooman) is considered the Father of KPop, then the Grandfather of KPop would then be any rock, pop, R&B & hiphop artists from the U.S. For me, the grandfathers of KPop would be musicians like The Jackson 5, Supremes, Prince, Temptations & Michael Jackson. What BTS/Bangtan did is to finally break through internationally in a huge way. Yes other KPop idols did it before them but not at the huge level that BTS did. And then BTS also got into the US market in a huge way as part of this process. They majorly helped KPop come back full circle to KPop's origin, the U.S. If we are starting to see more & more non-Korean foreigner idols in KPop, that is just a natural evolution. We have to remember that the KPop idol industry is really only 25 years old, pretty young, so it is still far from being established imo. There is still huge room for changes. Aside from people thinking that KPop is becoming more westernized, which is ridiculous because KPop was a western concept in the first place & South Korea only adopted it, there are other changes that have been taking place, which includes instrument groups, like rock bands, that have been identified & affiliated as KPop. That means KPop has never really been only "Singing + Dancing", even if that has been the major formfactor platform for a quarter century, which was copied from Seo Taiji. But people forget that Seo Taiji, along with his "Boys" band, also played as a rock band sometimes. This is the huge irony of KPop, in that Seo Taiji, KPop's inspiration & foundation, was first & foremost a rock/metal musician, but KPop turned more into a pop, R&B, hiphop genre, which that too was also because of Taiji in a double irony. So, there is nothing wrong for KPop going beyond the borders of Korea, because beyond the borders of Korea is where KPop came from. But in order for KPop to have happened, it took about 150 years of Korea adopting western music to get here today where we are, that includes Japanese colonial rule & JPop, of which those 2 things also brought western music into Korea, since JPop itself also came from the U.S. We also have to remember that even the words "Pop" & "Idol" also came directly from the US in this musical context. Even Korean Trot came from the US, due to the aforementioned colonial rule. Korea just put their own spin onto it, which is totally fine. The world itself has mostly become westernized as well, which unfortunately was due to western conquests & colonialization. It is not a stretch to say that KPop was also a direct descendant from African slavery in the Americas as sad as that is. And who knows, maybe one day KPop will reduce the dancing aspect of it as part of its evolution. Going international for more idol groups is also a natural evolution, because we also have to remember that KPop is a for-profit industry, so the more they branch out, the more wallets they find. There are many more things I could elaborate but this is getting long so I will stop here, lmao. 09/09/24
@@robwebnoid5763 This! 💯 I sat here and watched this video and thought the hypocrisy and irony. SMH . A couple of years ago, I read a long article about Lee Soo Man, it was about the founding of SM and how the SM idol training program was based on the Motown 1960’s training system created in Detroit by Berry Gordy. It spoke about how Teddy Riley and other Black American songwriters and producers helped with the songwriting and producing of earlier K-pop songs in the 90’s. Not to mention the number of western songwriters/producers that are making music for SM and other companies over the last 25 years to today. Your comment covered a lot of what I was thinking, so thank you for saving me time. 😀
I think the international fans still look at kpop as being uniquely Korean even seeing the inclusion of foreign members and use of English. The flavor and culture has stayed Korean.
I have explored so many k pop songs and groups my perticular favourite is no one specific because I like music in general every group has quality that's why they are idols not us but one thing I noticed about BTS that, this group is most exploited group I have ever seen whether by its company, country, government by their half of fandom and mostly by youtubers what most of the reaction channels do they doesn't like them but for engagement they praise them it's ok to not like their music but give them some respect as an artist if youtubers not resonate with their music or them please don't mention them i really feel bad for them beleive or not they also contribute in k pop and most of the people only mention them because of 1 fourth of the Twitter toxic fans not for their creativity P.s. my favourite girl group is mammamoo. Now a days every idols are focusing on making music for tik tok hit not taking risk in their music now a days every k pop agencies are only focusing on making money not good music 😞
I am a bts fan and i have to say I agree with your statement, you explained it very well so I am not going to say anything more on that. Tik tok is a norm right now and will probably continue to be in the future, companies still have to make the right business decisions in the current business world so they do not get left behind. Tik tok is where the money and market focus is nowadays so it makes sense for companies to target these spaces and to market the new generation of idols on these platforms. Making music for tik tok is happening in most industries where tik tok is accessible, even music not made for tik tok is still going to be made into a tik tok hit. Making money 1st was always these companies priorities, not the artist or what they want.
kpop was NEVER “korean music.”. it never took influence from korea, it is whatever music is popular and translates the words to korean. so when i hear the sentiment of “kpop isnt korean anymore” or “keep kpop korean” (yes the initials) knowing that kpop basically exists 90% bc of black culture, black artists and music, it feels so anti black to me. i also wonder, was this not going to be inevitable? if the only korean thing about kpop is the language and anyone can speak korean, wouldn’t it be inevitable that there would be more foreigners? and if the kpop industry is constantly taking from other cultures, wouldn’t it be nice to see some of the foreigners they take from in the industry represented too?
These people are so racist and insufferable to be saying keep kpop korean when there is literally NOTHING Korean about kpop besides the language. Now they are trying to hop on the afrobeat/amapiano wave because they know how global it has become. All they do is just hop on trends and make money off it all while being disrespectful to other cultures even the same culture they are making money off.
lol what a cope. by this logic, all the 'black music' that influenced kpop is really just white music that black american artists appropriated. did blacks invent english? did blacks invent piano, saxophones, guitars, and other instruments? it's not 'black', it's 'black american'. blacks couldn't and didnt create this if it wasn't for being influenced by whites.
We have to remember what the root of K-pop is. The root of it is not even Korean. the execution of it is. Taking western music styles and adding a Korean flavour. So when this question is asked you have to keep in mind the history of the music itself.
The comments section is acting like Kpop didn’t culturally appropriate dance pop, hip hop and R&B from African Americans. The only Kpop thing about it is the Korean language.
No one respects our feelings on that topic. People are constantly saying black people are too sensitive about sharing. But here we are, having a whole discussion about whether Koreans should gatekeep. It's ridiculous and disrespectful
@@currygoatgjThe argument will be we TOOK it and made it our own. That sentiment by itself is disrespectful. Other people will say culture is to be SHARED. But when it comes to our contributions, it's taken. We are constantly erased. People are forgetting that black people created hip hop, rap, r&b, jazz, blue's, rock and country. So Kpop is not a Korean creation. It's ok to participate. But ownership. Miss me with that
Guy who promoted most Korean culture in his solos song are treated badly by their own people I will never forget those kmedia and knetz who bullied him I hope they will get the karma back
I found this pretty engaging and the Korean people interviewed totally confused as to global popularity. Only BTS is really popular in any big way globally. Black pink is fading fast, and new Jeans has kinda been kicked to the curb, which is too bad for those young girls.
I’m a Love so just look at HYBE and the Gfriend Nu’est situations…. In my opinion Nu’est and Gfriend being Very popular in Korea didn’t fit into HYBE’s image. They want groups popular GLOBALLY international fame is what they push. Nuest and Gfriend didn’t fit that mold so they messily got rid of them. If Kpop is Korean Based then why not keep your groups despite not being as popular in the western world? They were popular where it counts in Korea what the “K” used to stand for in Kpop…
I don't believe that tho, bcos GFriend were like the female BTS, they got more popular after BigHit teamed with Source Music, their may have been disagreement with member's and Source but u can't say you know what happened unless both side's tell it
@@Ha-young_is_Just_Too_Fine I don’t believe there was a disagreement at all because Sowon herself said “The members and I didn’t know the group was disbanded. It was really hard for us to accept it in our hearts because it was so sudden.” If it was a disagreement then they would have been aware not taken completely off guard like that. I know that with Source and Pledis being absolute shit anything’s possible but with Nu’est as well as Gfriend they were both put on the back burner after HYBE acquired them. Nuest went down in comebacks per year after HYBE’s involvement. Also Pledis making promos for Nu’est 10th anniversary why would they pay that much for promotions for a group they knew they would get rid of? Makes no sense to me… But like you said I don’t know I wasn’t in the room all just speculation at the end of the day.
Totally agree with Ryan Tan Cher Wei 진치원 from the chat. And H from the chat, you're an idiot! I'm sad to say that when I learned of the collab Namjoon/ stallion what's her face, I was pretty disappointed and I don't even want to listen to that. I came to Kpop because what's now coming from the States is trash, it was unique and offered an original entertainment concept. Kpop is a copy of black American aesthetic period. Prior to kpop were Koreans wearing bandanas, braids and doing gang signs, were Korea singing , RnB songs, rappin, were Koreans stepping which is something that black American sorority/fraternity are known. for. No Koreans only had trot style music. Let's see if BTS can sell trot music globally. Even if a black person does not want RM collaborating with Megan it is because people have fetishes for Koreans/Asians and overlook that kpop is based off of Black African American music culture and aesthetic. I am African American and kpop groups past and present have always included English lyrics. I specifically only stan got7 and 2pm of only because as a Westerner they are more relatable and to my liking.
Let's be very clear. Her name is Meg The Stallion. And who gave you the right to call an entire countries music and art trash? If you don't like something, don't listen. If you only like the Korean interpretation of US/AA music. Then that's where you spend your time and money. But all that ignorant slander is ridiculous

It's no surprise, S. Korean still doesn't acknowledge how much BTS influenced the world to pay attention to S. Korea. Sad.
Because BTS don't have South Korean media in their pockets.
The media is the response to that, they don't play dirty so public opinion is manipulated to make them think they aren't a big deal and they are just another k-pop group, while others groups small feats get exaggerated and made to look like unprecedented achievements when in reality that's not the case
Sorry I know BTS songs however, I prefer got7 and 2pm . Oh yeah I watch all the BTS variety shows but once again my preference is Got7/2PM
I expected BigBang and BlackPink. But New Jeans surprised me as they are 4th Gen.
I did not expect any Koreans to choose BTS.
Im korean. I love that there are non korean members in kpop. I like that one of the biggest kpop stars isnt even korean

The comparison to pizza was very insightful to me.. also apropos for KPC 🤭
Like an organism trying to survive! Brilliant notion!😃
Aaah I missed the Koreans reacts series!! Great that came back!
K-POP is literally POP music in Korean.
“In a journal article, John Lie quotes Lee Soo Man, founder of SM Entertainment, one of the Big Three Korean entertainment agencies: “South Korea has best consumed black music in Asia. Just as J-pop was built on rock, we made K-pop based on black music”
“JYP and YG were heavily inspired by Black American Music and JYP modelled the trainee system after Motown.

Exactly. Come on David you have to do better than this.
Kpop was never traditional Korean music in the first place. The fact that most ppl in Korea do not listen to Kpop also says alot.
Well, a lot of my university students in Gwangju said they listen to it, so clearly young Koreans are consuming K-Pop.

Not saying that's what David has done but it's common practice in Korea to have people prepped and ready to interview beforehand.
kpop has always been influenced by western music. but where it went wrong was trying to appeal to the general western audience.
Why is it wrong to want to appeal to a bigger audience?
The KPOP back then and today in general :
The male idols will fully cover their bodies with shirts and pants (actual pants) while the female idols will wear shirt but with their pants removed (the "safety" shorts are just underwear length, and skirts that are just dress/blouse lifted up all the way to the waist level to look half naykurd) so young underage girls can be influenced to wear similarly as well. You're welcome.

Very interesting video. Great watch!
You know, I don't think I've ever heard someone try to argue rap music is no longer "black" just because there's people like Eminem, and foreigners participating.
Eminem has never disrespected the black community either. That's all that's required
Actually, that’s not true. When he started his skin colour was an issue, I’m sure many people cried cultural appropriation ( or its equivalent) at the time. He persisted and proved himself.
That is 100000% not true in the slightest. Eminem still gets s**t to this day for his skin color.

Music belongs to the world. It has no boundaries.💜💜
Korean music belongs to ethnic Koreans.
@user-lsoj0609 does Hip Hop belong to black people?

I'm going to state my opinion even though I haven't watched the entire video yet (sorry david). Kpop is still Kpop. The music is still sung in mostly Korean, even though there are some English words mixed in. That's like saying an R&B artist can't make a country album. THEY CAN. It's all about the music. Not the person behind the music. If someone said a song isn't Kpop because a Koreans isnt singing it, I would think they are bigoted racist. Kpop is a genre. That's my opinion.
Yes kpop is pop but the unique funky hair, mvs, style and sound of kpop is fading. Companies are more focused on tik tok trends.
Correct
Great interview. I really enjoyed getting to hear everyone's thoughts... especially from Jin's same base superior. 😅
The composition of a song does not change if you change the vocals…
And also for example in the case of genre called Dutch House, nobody expect the artist to be Dutch…
So when you think about it deeper, technically defining Kpop as a musical genre does not make any sense…
These all “letter-pops” like Kpop, Jpop etc exist because it symbolize an idol scene of each country, because in Asian countries people see big difference if you are singer or idol singer, if you are a rapper or idol rapper.

I feel with BTS, they expose Korea thru their music by including Korean Instrument's like with Idol and so on,no other Idol to my knowledge has done that, BTS literally sung about Korea especially in early year's

@@eileencritchley4630but the music is so soul-less.

PREACH
Preach. The comments section think Korean idols invented pop, hip hop and R&B.
@@AlfonsoEspinaonly a koreaboo would think that💀
I think the international fans still look at kpop as being uniquely Korean even seeing the inclusion of foreign members and use of English. The flavor and culture has stayed Korean.
I have explored so many k pop songs and groups my perticular favourite is no one specific because I like music in general every group has quality that's why they are idols not us but one thing I noticed about BTS that, this group is most exploited group I have ever seen whether by its company, country, government by their half of fandom and mostly by youtubers what most of the reaction channels do they doesn't like them but for engagement they praise them it's ok to not like their music but give them some respect as an artist if youtubers not resonate with their music or them please don't mention them i really feel bad for them beleive or not they also contribute in k pop and most of the people only mention them because of 1 fourth of the Twitter toxic fans not for their creativity
P.s. my favourite girl group is mammamoo.

@@AlfonsoEspina Yep, except they blended it and executed it better than its roots.
Has it ever been…? 🥴
KPOP is influenced by black American culture, let's talk about that as well.
No one respects our feelings on that topic. People are constantly saying black people are too sensitive about sharing. But here we are, having a whole discussion about whether Koreans should gatekeep. It's ridiculous and disrespectful
My point is. The only people that can't have an opinion on the subject without criticism is black people. I'm truly sick of it
@@BeeCuzz6357I agree with this sadly
@@BeeCuzz6357 I agree. No respect...our feelings never matter.
Miss me with that
Guy who promoted most Korean culture in his solos song are treated badly by their own people I will never forget those kmedia and knetz who bullied him I hope they will get the karma back
Most kpop content and esthetics originated from the western world in the first place, so what are they even talking about?? 🙄
I think of Motown who started the 'Training' of would be artist not just how to sing but makeup, clothing and dancing.
I found this pretty engaging and the Korean people interviewed totally confused as to global popularity. Only BTS is really popular in any big way globally. Black pink is fading fast, and new Jeans has kinda been kicked to the curb, which is too bad for those young girls.
When is the western world going to get fan signs?
They already do. It's just not that big of a deal here.
English songs are not kpop and it's just cringe when the west put those songs in kpop playlists and kpop award categories

A bit of EN in the lyrics is fine but when it's all EN like it seems to be the trend, I unfortunately lose interest. I'm sad to say that when I learned of the collab Namjoon/ stallion what's her face, I was pretty disappointed and I don't even want to listen to that. I came to Kpop because what's now coming from the States is trash, it was unique and offered an original entertainment concept. BTS got me hooked of course, but now I'm sad to say that they're going in a direction I'm not particularly a fan of. I'm loyal, so I feel bad and we'll see when they're back, but at the moment Enhypen is my go to. PS: I'm always in awe of the "man/woman in the street"'s intelligence, reasoning and ability to express very sensible points of view. Try that in the States...
