Best line, GO!
Nice. Since you watched this classic, you should look out for Saturday night fever too. A classic from the 70s that influenced a lot the cinema history. Is a very deep and realistic movie.
Stranded at the drive-in....branded a fool....what will they say? monday at school
"We hope you'll all turn out for the big Rydell High rally--Remember, if you can't be an athlete, be an athletic supporter."
(Most of the grownups in the movie were also recognizable 50's stars, and the principal was Eve Arden, who played a wisecracking schoolteacher in the 50's-TV "Our Miss Brooks".)
“Ugh you pig” “I love it when you talk dirty to me”
The "hicky from Kenickie" line cuz Jeff Connway improvised it.
Can we just give appreciation to coach? He is with a dude who has no idea what sport to try and he supports him in trying all the things he can think of in an effort to help him succeed. He’s a damn good teacher
Absolutely agree! He's even willing to get 🥧 thrown at him to recruit future prospects ... Next level dedication 😅
I love the "double nostalgia" effect. The 1970s looking back at the 1950s.
Right!?! It's so good!
I don't know if every decade looks back two decades, or if it was just the 1970s looking back to the 1950s.
But I grew up in ths 70s and the decade was obsessed with the 50s - this movie came at the end of the decade, though the play was seven years old.
In the US there was American Graffiti, as mentioned, which though was set in 1962 had a 1950s soundtrack. Plus the very successful US TV show Happy Days, popular in the UK too (where I grew up)
Music had a lot of 50s influences too. In the UK, early 70s pop/glam rock bands paid homage to the 1970s - such as Wizzard's 'Ball Park Incident'; Bowie's 'Drive In Saturday'; G Glitter's 'Rock and Roll Part 1'; David Essex's 'Rock On' and the movie it came from; and Marc Bolan and T.Rex often referenced the 70s, especially Cadillacs. There were many more.
Many bands used a saxophone to get a 50s sound, or dressed like the 50s, such as the UK bands Mud and Wizzard, in 50s drapes, the 'Teddy Boy' or 'Ted' look.
There were also bands doing exact 50s music or 50s sounding music (in the US, Sha Na Na, who did a lot of the music for the Grease soundtrack; in the UK, Showaddywaddy, and Darts, who all dressed as Teds)
Elvis movies were on the TV all the time (BBC) and until punk rock came along, the 50s clothes were still popular and even then, some punks wore a combination of Teddy Boy looks.
Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent were still very popular in the UK.
Perhaps it was due to many of the young film makers and musicians of the 70s themselves growing up in the 50s, and was their own nostalgia trip?
@@mikephillips8810 Yes, in the 70s there was a revival of 50s music.
MAD Magazine was read by all the cool teenagers in the 1950's! I was there! GREASE is an "Ode to to American TeenAge Life in the 1950's"😊
Love that title sequence! 😊
I was birn in 1947 and was a greaser in the 50's & 60's. Many of the scene's were basically a story of my life. Still love it.
Thanks for sharing this!
I love this movie. I saw it around 17 times that summer of 1978. I was 13 at the time. Not gonna lie, it's all about Olivia Newton-John for me. She was and is my idol. I was already a huge fan of hers before this movie. Most people now don't realize that at the time of filming this movie during the summer of 1977 (before the release of Saturday Night Fever), ONJ was the biggest star on this film. She was already a 3-time Grammy Award winner, multi-platinum, multi-million record selling artist with multiple top 10 hits, including 2 number one songs in the hot 100. She released her first greatest hits album in late 1977 before the release of "Grease". She was a singer, not an actress, but producer Allan Carr, director Randal Kleiser and John Travolta himself were convinced that she would be perfect for the role and convinced her to do it. She was very reluctant because she had been in a flop movie in the UK in 1970 and because of her age (28 at the time). She requested a screen test to see if she would be able to pull it off and see if there was chemistry between her and JT. Then she would make the decision. Rest is history... Oh, also her long-time record producer and songwriter, John Farrar, wrote both "You're the One That I Want" and "Hopelessly Devoted to You" for the movie. Both were big hits for ONJ. Without her in this film, it would have been very different.
Now, when I watch the movie, I'm watching Stockard Channing as Rizzo. She sank her teeth into that role and just rocked it. Fabulous performance. Just the line, 'Would you pull that crap with Annette?" totally won me over. I just can't help it. I'm Sandra Dee!
I enjoyed this so much. I was in High School when this came out (senior year), and saw it several times in the theater. During the 1970s, Oldies radio stations would play songs from the '50s and '60s, so this movie fit right in. Many memories.
Most of the cast were in their upper 20s to young 30s, one theory is that Sandy drowned during the opening scene as alluded to when Danny and Sandy were first singing, and that is why the car flies up into the sky at the end of the movie
Woah! That's wild ... Interesting nonetheless 😜
Frankie Avalon still managed to make a song dissing Frenchie sound good.
Sooo true! That's his power 😆
The coach is sort of the unsung hero in this movie. For every time Danny sucked at one sport, the coach went out of his way to figure out what other sport he could be good at. Now that is a teacher for you.
Completely agree! 😆
Thank you so much for reacting to Grease!!
This was a special film for me when I saw it in the summer of 1978. I was 20 at the time and my 13 year old sister had just died on June 18. While watching the movie I couldn’t help continuously thinking that my dead sister would have LOVED this movie. Grease still reminds me of my little sister in a good way. I can’t help thinking of her when I see this movie. Thank you again!!!
So sorry for your loss.
Daniel, I'm so sorry for your loss ... thank you so much for sharing this 😊 your connection to this film is very touching! Thank you my friend!
Saturday Night Fever isn't a musical--it's a Brooklyn mean-streets drama that just HAPPENS to have a great soundtrack and Travolta dance numbers--but it's close enough to count.
And if you thought Olivia Newton-John was cute here, she's downright adorable in 1980's "Xanadu", another soundtrack-musical favorite that so far has had only one reaction. (That I know of.)
Both films are on the list for the month 😊
@@latenightswithsammy Actually, if you’re looking at Xanadu, one of the gimmicks is that it tries to imitate old classic musicals, including casting an older Gene Kelly thirty years after Singin’ in the Rain. If that one’s on the list too, might be more fun to watch that first, in order.
What a legendary movie!
We miss you Olivia ❤
The race through the LA river was so iconic
YES is was, so good!
Represented the 50s, when the cool guys all slicked their hair back with *"Grease"*
It's up there with the best 'Cool Flicks!' 😆
The guardian angel of tough love.
This was the first film I ever saw at the cinema without my parents taking me. I remember 2 of my cousins asking me to go to see it and I was not overly interested at the time thinking it was about the country, Greece.... Wow, did it open my eyes and led to a lifetime of being "Hopelessly Devoted" to the gorgeous Olivia Newton-John! I cannot count the amount of times I've seen this over the years since that wide eyed 13 year old heard the famous line: "Tell me about it... Stud!" I've attended numerous fancy dress versions of it and then came the ultimate "Sing-a-long" version with all the songs lyrics coming up in brilliantly animated subtitles which made it even more fun. I'm glad you enjoyed your first viewing. I believe you can be an honorary T-Bird now...
Lol - I Literally saw this in the Drive through Theater Twice at 8 years old...while my pothead/alcoholic Mom passed out, in our PINTO (lol- yes That one)...Hatch back Wagon....
Oh da days...Ferrell children
✌
"I guess that's George McFly"
UhMmm?? Now I need a Grease and Back to the Future crossover??
😅 - that'd just be fascinating .. George would blend right in
@@latenightswithsammy not to mention Marty time traveling and somehow getting involved with Danny and Sandy's situation.
"Revenge of the Nerds" for the win.
"You're gonna need more than a coat of paint to make it at Thunder Road"
Great line !
1. I worked at a three theater movie group and this is one of which is a drive-in. Yes it was like that.
Sometimes moving from car to car.
2. Also, Up in Smoke, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Saturday Night Fever.
3. This was a great movie to take your honey to. I was in High School.
4. This music was all over the radio at the time 🎸
5. This thing is full of Karaoke🧑🎤
Some movie musicals I recommend if you haven't seen them include:
Seven Brides For Seven Brothers,
Gigi,
Brigadoon,
Flower Drum Song,
Xanadu,
Yellow Submarine,
Tommy,
Jesus Christ Superstar,
Bedknobs and Broomsticks,
And Fiddler on the Roof to name a few.
Fantastic recommendations, thank you for these ☺️
Evita
My aunt showed me the whole movie when I was 7 (my mom wasn't around so she got away with it lol) and all the 'adult stuff' went right over my head lol. This movie came out when my mom was a senior in HS so she did get to see it in Theaters lol.
That's quite a personal connection to this film! Your aunt rocks! Thanks for sharing this 😊
@@latenightswithsammy LOL yeah she once got me on video 'singing and dancing' to some of the songs. It's one of those home videos that's silly, but you never want to show others because it's embarrassing. Inbetween a few songs my aunt dressed me up in two of my mom's prom dresses and one of hers lol. I was 7 at the time so they were big on me. Only song I wasn't in a gown was Greese Lightning because I was going all over the place lol.
I was 7 when this came out and most of the references went over my head. All the adult stuff and how the film subverts the nostalgia.
as a kid, watching this movie...the intro was it. it just hooked you up. when would we have seen such cartoons with such music? amazing (even the scene my mom censored is good memories now. "cover your eyes while i fast forward XDDD)
😂 - cinema magic! Thank you so much for sharing this!
I've not seen this in a long time, since I was little. Theres a lot of stuff I didnt catch as a kid
I'm sure it's packed with little nuggets that are fun to discover overtime 😊
Yeah
Did you notice that Tom, AKA The Jock, is actually Lorenzo Lamas?😁
I think this is the first Lorenzo Lamas picture I've seen 😅
Nice. Since you watched this classic, you should look out for Saturday night fever too. A classic from the 70s that influenced a lot the cinema history. Is a very deep and realistic movie.
Would love to watch it for this month 🙂 Thanks for bringing it up!
@@latenightswithsammy welcome. Is a movie that is very into "show, don't tell" in many details. Secondary characters will always bring information about their stories that also influence the main story. Most people think is a movie about dance competition, but it is not. The same way Rocky is not about boxing, but is about the story of the main character. That is the POV you the movie should be watched.
"What are we in for?"
The movie of a generation... my friend...
So true! 😆
Loved this film it was my ex best friend’s favourite movie and I couldn’t watch it for four years because it just made me sad but in 2020 I finally watched it again and rediscovered my own personal love for it :) it was also the bonding movie me and my new uni friends watched on our first week ❤️
Also no one ever watches my fave movie which is Victor Victoria. It has Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins, sound of music)
Let me check it out ... Seems fun 😊
1. I worked at a three-theatre movie group and this is one of which is a drive-in. Yes it was like that. Sometimes moving from car to car. Bring your own hootch.(+ 4/20)
2. This soundtrack got a ton of radio play.
3. This was a great movie to take your honey to. I was in High School.
4. These songs kill for karaoke (especially Summer Lovin')
5. Marty/Diana Manoff is my honey😍😋
6. If you don't dig the all star cast it's on you🙄
7. "I'll give you 75c for the whole car, including your chick."🤣
8. Danny changed for Sandy too. He lettered in track.
9. RIP ONJ 😭😇
I have three kinds of Funko Pop. Grease, Little Shop of Horrors and Hamilton.
A film which had an international cinematic impact is Jacques Demy's 1964 musical romantic drama _The Umbrellas of Cherbourg_ ( _Les parapluies de Cherbourg_ ). It does not have spoken dialog with occasional songs but rather is sung-through. The 2004 restoration brought back to life Demy's vibrant color palette.
The Oscar nominated score is by Michel Legrand, who would go on to win Best Score for _Summer of '42_ (1971) and _Yentl_ (1983), and Best Song for "The Windmills of Your Mind" from _The Thomas Crown Affair_ (1968).
While _The Umbrellas of Cherbourg_ did not win any of the five Oscars it was nominated for, it won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1964.
It is a remarkably beautiful and moving film.
Great reaction! My mom loved this movie since it came out when she was a kid and so I grew up similarly obsessed
A fantastic musical movie to react to would be “Bye Bye Birdie” (1963). It’s a hysterical satire and based off how Elvis getting drafted affected the (teenage) nation. The songs are super catchy and honestly I love (and love to hate) all the characters
Fun fact: Elvis actually was the top pick to play Birdie (the Elvis parody) but Elvis’ manager didn’t want him to be in a parody of himself. Personally, I think it’s better without him in it since I feel the satire might be lost a bit on some but I think it’s really funny that he considered it. Another small fun fact: Ann-Margret who plays the lead (Kim McAfee) would later star in “Viva Las Vegas” alongside Elvis in 1964
Edit: I’d also highly recommend the musicals “Falsettos” (the 2017 proshot) and “Phantom of the Opera” (2011 25th Anniversary proshot). Both are traditional musicals though, so they may not be what you’re looking for or may not be able to get past copyright, but I’d recommend checking them out on your own time at the very least.
Phantom is amazing and it was shot at the Royal Albert Hall. It was streamed live to movie theaters in several countries and my mom forced to me see it but I immediately fell in love with the score. There is a movie version but I do not recommend it in the slightest, unless you were to watch the actual musical first. The movie is butchered and the voice talent and emotion is severely lacking in my opinion (I’m sorry but Emmy rossum cannot fucking sing, at least not as Christine Daaé).
Falsettos is an emotional but amazing and incredible musical, from 1992. I can’t count the amount of times I’ve watched this and even my first tattoo was from one of the songs. The cast is phenomenal and I love the set choices for this production, I think it really adds to the tone
If you haven't already filled out the schedule for this month I suggest watching at least one of the great pre-code musicals. There are a bunch of great ones, and many of the best are backstage musicals with the musical numbers directed by Busby Berkeley.
It may be best to start with the doyenne of backstage musicals, 1933's _42nd Street._
Another great one is _Gold Diggers of 1933,_ probably the best of the several "Gold Diggers" films,.
Perhaps my favorite is _Footlight Parade,_ which also came out in '33. It stars James Cagney, Joan Blondell, Ruby Keeler, and Dick Powell. It's one of Cagney's films where his talent as a dancer was featured.
Do a EX MACHINA (2014) MOVIE REACTION
Will definitely add it to the list! It's a great film I've heard 🙂
Its summer nights
👍
lets hope its someone who doesnt cut out the Movie musical numbers.. please please....
Hopefully what is there is enough 😆
Grease 2 is also cool; even though it's got a slightly different vibe to this movie.
Definitely worth checking out 😊
@@latenightswithsammy This one's more about subplots; as I'm sure you noticed; and the second one's more about the main plot. But each work in their own way.
Jersey or NY?😊
Is not male machismo kid is cool male friendship.Or macho friendship.
Gotcha! Thanks for writing it in ... my vocabulary set has just expanded 😊
