To understand, a hell is a state of mind, if you're born rich and powerful, but when random people tell you're suck and insult you, you became angry and ruin your day, this mean your state of mind is bad, your life is good, you have money, you have things that million other people don't have, but an insult is enough to ruin your day and yourself
Then there is other people who born in hell, they endure torture and getting killed and injured, but his state of mind is good, he doesn't angry, he doesn't hate a creature that torture him, instead he feel compassionate, this mean even he born in hell, his state of mind isn't collapse
Everything that happen in our life, we mustn't disturb the state of peace mind, we must be mindfull
Even you feel hurt, you don't give in, you feel proud and powerful, you don't be arrogant, you keep your state of mind be peace, thus the concept of heaven and hell, karma can't chain you anymore and you'll be released from circle of rebirth and suffering (samsara)

I'm not overly religious and when I was 12, I asked my social science teacher what exactly hell was. We were studying about religions at that time and he told me " hell is whatever you make it to be, my dear. We can't be certain what comes after death but what we are certain of is the present. We have influence in the present, and heaven is when you look back at the life you've lived on your death bed and you can say, 'I was a good man.' " That stuck with me until now. My teacher was Buddhist, and he was pretty old....old but wise. He would teach us to accept people for who they are and to look at things logically not with blind faith.

After searching for a second I was shocked to find out that there is multiple hell realms just like in Islam actually (is it a coincidence?). "The Fire Sermon"
Thus I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was living at Gaya, at Gayasisa, together with a thousand bhikkhus. There he addressed the bhikkhus.
"Bhikkhus, all is burning. And what is the all that is burning?
"The eye is burning, forms are burning, eye-consciousness is burning, eye-contact is burning, also whatever is felt as pleasant or painful or neither-painful-nor-pleasant that arises with eye-contact for its indispensable condition, that too is burning. Burning with what? Burning with the fire of lust, with the fire of hate, with the fire of delusion. I say it is burning with birth, aging and death, with sorrows, with lamentations, with pains, with griefs, with despairs.
"The ear is burning, sounds are burning...
"The nose is burning, odors are burning...
"The tongue is burning, flavors are burning...
"The body is burning, tangibles are burning...
"The mind is burning, ideas are burning, mind-consciousness is burning, mind-contact is burning, also whatever is felt as pleasant or painful or neither-painful-nor-pleasant that arises with mind-contact for its indispensable condition, that too is burning. Burning with what? Burning with the fire of lust, with the fire of hate, with the fire of delusion. I say it is burning with birth, aging and death, with sorrows, with lamentations, with pains, with griefs, with despairs.
"Bhikkhus, when a noble follower who has heard (the truth) sees thus, he finds estrangement in the eye, finds estrangement in forms, finds estrangement in eye-consciousness, finds estrangement in eye-contact, and whatever is felt as pleasant or painful or neither-painful- nor-pleasant that arises with eye-contact for its indispensable condition, in that too he finds estrangement.
"He finds estrangement in the ear... in sounds...
"He finds estrangement in the nose... in odors...
"He finds estrangement in the tongue... in flavors...
"He finds estrangement in the body... in tangibles...
"He finds estrangement in the mind, finds estrangement in ideas, finds estrangement in mind-consciousness, finds estrangement in mind-contact, and whatever is felt as pleasant or painful or neither-painful-nor-pleasant that arises with mind-contact for its indispensable condition, in that too he finds estrangement.
"When he finds estrangement, passion fades out. With the fading of passion, he is liberated. When liberated, there is knowledge that he is liberated. He understands: 'Birth is exhausted, the holy life has been lived out, what can be done is done, of this there is no more beyond.'"
That is what the Blessed One said. The bhikkhus were glad, and they approved his words.
Now during his utterance, the hearts of those thousand bhikkhus were liberated from taints through clinging no more.

Even though all religions including buddhism talk about these hells, I am not sure whether they are just horrible experiences created in the mind itself after death or they are actual places. If they really exist, the universe is way more shittier than we can ever imagine. What does the universe gain by punishing someone in a hell ? At least, will the person being punished learn any lesson as an outcome .. which is also highly unlikely since no-one remembers their past lives. Also who is going to punish those executioners working in hell ? Don't they accumulate bad karma by burning people ? .. I think it's a good idea not to think about these things and live a good life.

This is only my opinion. I think if a Hell exists then Heaven must exists as well, you cannot have one without the other, so if Hell does not exist then neither does Heaven. Perhaps with past lives, the current one you live a life where you are learning a different lesson and so this current live you do not have the same troubles as past lives since you already learned from them. Perhaps we punish ourselves according to our misdeeds after we pass away or we reward ourselves, this is my opinion but maybe we get to reflect on the entire life and see the good versus bad. Also I think "executioners in Hell" could create good karma for punishing evil but at the same time balance it out with what they are doing.
Maybe these Monks know something we do not know and they don't tell us the straight answer. If Hell punishment does not exists, why do some monks spend their entire lives committed to practicing compassion? Again, if there is a Heaven there must be an opposite like everything else in this universe. One thing cannot exists without the other like life cannot be without death. Light without dark. Male without female..

We can at least imagine that the person was kind prior to the descent into illness. I can imagine a woman who was kind and generous, but due to brain cancer, becomes utterly paranoid and psychotic, has fits of rage, etc. Are we to infer that notwithstanding her kindness and generosity that she got brain cancer and acquired her hellish experiences due to some terrible action(s) in her past life/lives?

That is why I don't agree with bhuddism on the concept of an afterlife. It makes it possible to blame people for suffering. An enlightened person would not believe such a thing, but less enlightened people can use that logic. The only thing that kind of makes sense, is applying the Christian concept that trials make us better people/prepare us for the after life (lives in this case), but even that infers that suffering has purpose.
The world is calculating machine. If we can obtain a benefit, or harness suffering to help us in a future life, if such a thing exists, I'm for it, but I don't believe there is any virtue in suffering for virtues sake. It just is. For me at least, there is a comfort, because I don't always have to be worrying about what this achieved or that achieved. The human mind is designed to piece together patterns where there are none. I think purpose is a biologically adaptive trait that humans have made the mistake of applying to cosmos.

    • @meekgreek9922
      @meekgreek9922 3 роки тому +2

@@jessicacole8404 I think we believe there is purpose because it comes intuitively. In other words, we just know there is purpose to this life. No other being on this earth can perceive the concept of purpose, let alone live for it in some way. Spiritual experience is the proof to purpose, phenomenon that goes beyond our logical faculties to show that there is something beyond this life. The uniqueness of being human, i.e. our physical, intellectual and spiritual capabilities is testament to this. I am Christian so I believe we are made in the image of God, an unique being indeed. But even Buddhists believe to be human is an opportunity to change your spiritual fate. That's how unique it is to be us, so there must be purpose because without purpose what is the point to life itself. Even the animals who are not conscious of purpose, live by instinct to survive and rear young. Life is purpose in essence.
