- Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan sahib presents two rare prakars (forms) of Malhar in this live recording of a concert hosted by Raga Music Circle in New York on June 12th 2016.
First is raga Ramdaasi Malhar with a soulful bandish set to slow Addha tal: Eisi ri bundariyaan
Khan sahib's comments in the beginning: "This is not exactly the right season to sing Malhar but I will sing none the less because I don't know when I will get the chance next to sing during the monsoons here. So here is raga Ramdaasi Malhar for you. It is out of season but in New York it can rain anytime. My forefathers sang this raga and this composition but it is rare nowadays." He goes on to explain the difference in application of the note "gandhar" or ga in this raga versus in raga Miyan ki Malhar, which is the most popular form of Malhar sung now.
Second, is raga Gaud Malhar with a bandish set in Drut Teental: Umad ghumad garaja garaja. This is a composition of the well known composer Kunwar Shyam.
Vocals: Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan
Tabla: Nitin Mitta
Harmonium: Anirban Chakrabarty
Tanpuras: Anup Barua and Michael Harrison
Recorded and edited by Aric Gutnick
Gaud Malhar is not exactly a rare Malhar prakar!
Ustad Ji want to say about Bandish not raag. He is a Bandish Nawaz, king of Bandish. He knows each raga minimum 50 up rare Bandishes.
@@SandipBhattacharjee Exactly Sandip Sahab! You are a precious student of his and I will also try my best to become his student... I worship him... He is My God, The Son Of Maa Saraswati!
I dont think the singer said it was rare
But the bandishes are very rare.. He is Bandish Nawaz ... He knows almost 100 bandishes in each raags . And they extremely rare... And see the mercy of God that I got a chance to be his student!
