Although borosilicate glass have a higher heat resistance, resistance to temperature difference is only about 160 °C. Never heat the flask with strong direct flame as it can still crack. Better use more even heating such as heating nest/mantle or sand bath - this also saves evergy. The electric heater is probably okay but you can wrap the flask in tin foil to heat it up faster and more evenly. You can use glass thermometer to control the temperature.
You can add some boiling chips to improve boiling - things like broken glass or ceramic rashig rings will do.
Also note that mixtures always boil as mixtures to the initial vapours will always contain some sulfuric acid. This will be boiled off so use reflux condenser or fractional distillation if you want to save some acid.
The discoloration might be some salts (e.g. sulfates) that are easily soluble in water but not so in sulfuric acid, so they precipitate and make the solution cloudy.

idk how anyone hasn't said yet at this point, but 3.3 boro 100% can sustain a clean high-temp bunsen burner. You can literally work the glass up to 450C consistently without much issue (assuming quality glassware). Sulfuric acid boils less than 400C which means you can distill it within safe parameters of the glass itself.
No need to spread misinformation. You can just state facts and it's ok.

  • @glennkrieger

Even though I'm late to the party here, the cloudy appearance of the acid in the round bottom flask is a result of the acid dissolving micro bits of the filter paper, and then any surface contaminants on the bottom inside of the funnel, including the metal itself. Although 35% H2SO4 (battery acid concentration) is pretty low and won't eat into metal quickly. Any plastic funnel works just fine. And, you really need to get the special acid resistant filter paper that's sold. There's just no away around it unfortunately. I'm sure your concentrate is still useful though.

How can i make 98% or at least 96% sulfuric acid from car battery?

    • @glennkrieger
      @glennkrieger 3 роки тому +3

@@Gcity67k Hey. Using a glass container only, fill it with battery acid. Put a hot plate, or other heating element, outside (never indoors) and put the glass container with the battery acid on it. Then wait. Eventually water vapor will be seen coming off of the battery acid. It looks like typical steam, like when cooking on a stove. Eventually, and this will take hours, an opaque white vapor will begin to be seen. At this point you are starting to evaporate sulfuric acid itself. This white vapor is extremely toxic. Continue to let it heat with the visible white vapor for another 25-20 minutes. At this point turn the heating element off.
Wait until the acid cools down, but not until it becomes completely cold. If it becomes cold it will again start to absorb moisture out of the air which will start to dilute the acid you just concentrated. When the acid in the glass container is warm, pour it into another acid resistant container and cap it tight. Usually another glass container with a top that can be screwed down works well. Also, an empty wine bottle with a cork is good too.
You will be left with ~97 - 98% sulfuric acid. It will be a bit syrupy and slightly yellow. The discoloration isn't important and won't effect any experiments you do.
      Good luck K T!

Concentrated Sulphuric acid is a much more corrosive and dangerous than the dilute one. While the dilute acid can be stored "quite" safely in most PE bottles, Concentrated acid will eat through them. When u use this for batteries be aware that you have to dilute it safely down again, before the battery case gets eaten away. (Always pour acid into water, because it's very exothermic.)

  • @rashedusman9717

There are a couple of things that should have been done differently:
-the dilute solution should have been filtered using glass funel idealy, or at least plastic, never metal
-the concentrated acid should have been filtered using a glass funel and glass fibre, not metal funel and paper coffe filter
-the white stuff was probably iron sulphate( from the metal funel) and some lead sulphate( if the solution comes from a car battery, not bottled electrolite), and it's possible that by letting the concentrated solution sit for a while in a cool place to precipitate it
-the obtained concentrated acid contains a lot of impurities but it can be used at least to prepare hidrochloric acid, probably ignite a mixture of sugar and chlorate or in a dessicator, maybe other reactions as well where purity isn't an issue.
