- In the channels last video of 2023 we will take a look at painting Meng's excellent 1/35 M4A2E2 Jumbo. And Dragon's troublesome M3 Halftrack, and overcoming a painting mishap!
These two will later be in next Bastogne themed diorama depicting Cobra King of the 4th Armored breaking the siege of Bastogne.
Nice out come ,you got it back from the bin ,Have a great Christmas.
Thanks, you too!
Very nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
Amazing work well done!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great recovery merry Christmas hope to see more in 2024
Thanks mate! Have a great Christmas!
Amazing work Shane! I have no idea how I missed this. What an absolute bummer, I bloody hate when stuff like that happens with my varnishes. My most recent Lanchester build had a similar issue, I applied a gloss coat and the paint started to crack. I airbrushed the base colours over the affected areas but it still looks bad, I'm just glad my camera didn't really show it. Admittedly, it was my own fault because I sprayed the gloss coat earlier than I should have. It's great to see you back and I can't wait to see more.
Its pretty sickening when it happens. And sometime it seems to just happen at random where a normally reliable varnish just decides that today is the day to mess with us lol But we can always try to save the day as disheartening as it is
Absolutely mate, you feel like crap when it happens. You're damn right though, we can normally save it ... when we can't, just laugh it off lol@@longlance67
Oh bummer, that was quite a reaction you had there with the clear coat! Damn! Great to see that you did not give up on this, but instead you started all over again and with an even better result on the good old olive drab. Definately something i will find useful once i get to paint the M7 Priest.
I try to avoid clear coats whenever i can, they are just the biggest threat to a model in my opinion, the failure rate is too high! However, my faith has been restored partially since i started using VMS varnishes, so far they haven´t failed. It is probably bound to happen though, so i will remain careful with that stuff!
I totally get why you don't like clear till absolutely necessary, I am just always paranoid about my decals silvering lol
A few other guys have mentioned VMS varnish too. I may have to give them a try as they look very impressive!
Hope your having a wonderful Christmas Michi!
That Sherman "Cobra King" model looks great. The new kits look like those tanks in the old black and white photos. The dimensions are always so precise. Credit Meng.
Meng did a great job on this kit! Very crisp detail and well engineered for the modeler! Between Meng and Asuka we have plenty of choices for Jumbos
the outro is a liiitle loud. Good to see you could salvage the models! Have good days and take care :)
Thanks, you too!
What a nightmare ,glad you persevered mate ,looking forward to seeing the next installment .
Have a great christmass and an even better new year.!!
Eat ,drink and be merry !!
Thanks mate! I am quite looking forwards to seeing how this project takes shape!
Have a great Christmas mate!
Thanks for the early Christmas present! Have a Merry Christmas!
Thanks mate! Hope you have a great 2024!
Merry Christmas, Shane. Persevere
Thanks mate! Happy New Year!
Cheers Shane! I was rooting for you redoing the paint when I saw it on Instagram, such a shame.. but I think you knocked it out of the park the second time around! Merry Christmas and Happy holidays to you and yours.
Thanks mate! Really appreciate your support Vincent! have a great Christmas !
Good job on pushing thru that unfortunate event. i know I would've just rage-quitted the model.
I seriously considered walking away from this project. But so much effort went into both models and I had to try save it
I had that same issue on the bottom of a race car model I built. I’ve used that method many times with no problems. Tamiya acrylic paint with x22 on top. I never figured out what happened. Merry Christmas
Ya it is a strange alright lol Sometimes we can get burnt every now and them
Sorry that happened - frustrating! But great perseverance!
Happy Christmas and New Year!
Thanks mate! Happy New Year to you!
Great that you show and describe the cock-ups that do occur. That helps everyone learn, thank you.
Have a happy, safe and peaceful Christmas. Look forward to seeing more of your outstanding work in 2024.
Thank you! Hope you have wonderful Christmas and New Year. May 2024 be a kind year to us all :)
Looks great, despite the troubles! Great to see your painting techniques. I had X22 frosting troubles too. Over gloss black. I have no idea what happened, but I'm starting to think I'll use Vallejo gloss instead...
*Very good result, your method for painting models gives is really awesome!*
Thank you so much 😀
Sorry to see that gloss mishap, but good on you for sticking with it and fixing it. I personally swear by Mr Color GX clears, and MRP, haven't had any issues with them (yet). I want to add that you have some amazing brush control, I'm envious!
Thanks mate! It was a bit disgusting to see what the clear coat had done when I got in after work. But sometimes these things happen from time to time and we just have to be stubborn and not let it get the better of you.
Thanks mate, and trust me you'd be surprised how quick you would develop said brush control. I find it useful to imagine the brush/airbrush doing the work and not trying to fight it
TopJob Shane, nice that you are back. 👍👍
Thanks mate, I'm always working on videos in the background but don't have as much time as I did
Bummer Shane - I have had this happen to me too, it sucks!
I am getting ready to start a tank (Not sure which one yet) - it will be only my 2nd tank that I have built (I build a lot of planes and automotives).
I am taking notes from your videos to apply it to my next tank.
Happy new year - see you next year.
Henry from Northern California
Thanks Henry! It can happen from time to time when varnishes decides to ruin our day lol But thankfully its not the end of the world when it does happens. Just a few extra days work.
What kit are you thinking for your next tank ?
I am not sure which tank I want to build - maybe a Russian heavy tank, or a German heavy tank. Do you have any suggestions for a good, quality kit? (Tamiya, DML, etc)
Oh man, I really felt that in my stomach - but gladly you recovered nicely! 👏👏👏👏
As you said, Shane, perseverance is everything🙂
Merry Christmas 🎄and a Happy New Year 🎆to you and your family 💓Sláinte🥃
Thanks mate! It felt quite the achievement to have salvaged this project!
Merry Christmas to you and yours Mike!
Cool Shane
Loved this video!!!
Happy Christmas and new year Shane from uk🇬🇧. Thanks for another great video .
Happy belated Christmas hope you had a great one!
Shane, great video! We learn more from problems than things going well. Have a great Christmas from Newfoundland, Canada! Cheers
Thanks mate! I found it important to show that things go wrong for us all. As cutting it out prevents learning opportunities and is a little unfair as it gives a false impression
Hi Shane
Good to see you back in action.
Great work as usual mate!
A real shame about your painting mishap, I reckon that would have tried my patience a bit too 😢😅
But with that perseverance that us modellers somehow find, a fantastic rescue mission!!
Thanks for sharing your great work over 2023, and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing your next stage for sure!
Merry Xmas to you and yours, and a very safe new year ❤😊
Cheers from down under 🇦🇺
Thanks mate, we managed to save the project in the end. Which is great as it would have been a shite way to end the modelling year lol
Hope you have a great new year and 2024!
Great
Shane
I use chaos black primer often
Excellent process!
I tend to use a lot of Citadel paints in many of projects. I really like them, but Chaos Black has to be one of the best rattle primers out there
Hi Shane shame about the reaction with the clear coat glad you sorted it out perhaps use a different clear coat just incase it happens again just a thought buddy. looking forward to your next video. Merry Christmas to you and the family and a happy safe healthy new year mate. Cheers Gary 🇬🇧
Hope you have a great Christmas Gary! Normally you can save these kind of reactions easily enough with a another clear coat on top. However in our case. The thinner reactivated the paint underneath and made it run. So we had to start over
Had the same thing a while back, almost certainly high humidity levels. I never spray topcoats when humidity is above 60-65%.
A tricky thing to in the west of Ireland, but your right its moisture levels causing chaos
Hi Shane, that certai ly was a very big BUGGER moment, but you persevered and won out in the end, if it was me, I would have binned the damn thing, I can see another great diorama coming up, all my very best wishes for Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year, best regarcs from a Kiwi living in Australia
It was pretty sickening when it happened but we managed to save the day thankfully!
Hope you have a great New Year's !
Next time you get frosting try carefully using a hairdryer on the model. It can completely remove the frosting with patience
Thanks for the tip I will bear that in mind next time!
shane.. its good you didn't let the tamiya paint mess you up to much...we've all had a miss hap with X22 its evil stuff..I'm still using future floor polish..😅...Great tutorial as always...👍
It can be temperamental alright lol I know some guys swear by Future but just like anything else. I've heard of mishaps with that too, and its pretty tricky to get here
@@longlance67 I'm down to half a bottle now...never had a problem with it...have a great Xmas mate..
One more time amazing job .I m fan of your work. merry christmas
Thank you! You too!
Yeah, it was probably the humidity. It’s bad enough with water based paints but lacquer and even enamels can be cranky if there’s too much moisture in the air.
You wouldn’t be the first modeler to invest in a dehumidifier for your work are. Just a suggestion.
Its one the reasons why I shifted to Lacquer paints more and more over the years as the conditions I work in make acrylics struggle in the winter too much. I may have to take your sage advice me thinks!
Merry Christmas Shane. Great recovery there too. Looking forward to seeing more great work next year
Thanks mate! I got some great builds planned for us in 2024!
Hey Shane - great save, excellent work - have a great Christmas cya new year 😂🎉🎉Liam
Thanks mate hope you have a great New Year!
Merry Christmas Shane!
I am confident that your patience is much greater than mine. I have a few "mishaps" still sitting in boxes...lol.
Everything on my bench is 1/16th scale. My older age enjoys the larger parts.
One of the enjoyments I get from your channel is your use of colors.
Do you think I can incorporate your colors in 1/16th scale?
Happy New Year. Stay safe.
Cómo siempre Magnífico trabajo Sherman Máster 🎉 . Merry Christmas and Happy New year
Thank you my friend! We will have many more Shermans in 2024!
Happy New Year!
I use both Mr. Color and Tamiya; one thing I do not do is mix the thinners. I will occasionally spray a light mist coat of the Mr. Color Leveling Thinner over a still-wet Tamiya gloss coat. I've had issues that make Tamiya and Aqua-Gloss my only clear/varnish coats; however, what happened to you is heartbreaking, I can't even imagine. It really seems strange. Anyhow; have a Merry Christmas Shane, and a Happy New Year.
I suspect perhaps some residue from a different thinner that was lingering in the airbrush may have caused this mishap, that or the high moisture in the air as the paint also ran with the varnish too. But least I could save the project as it would have been sickening to have lost it after all the work that went into it.
Hope you have a happy New Years!
Crazy mishap but it looks like a good recovery. Great looking jumbo! I'm looking forward to seeing the diorama. Have you ever used VMS clear coat? It works super well and I've never had any issues with the application.
I have heard good things about it I will have to try it in future!
I thought you're disaster looked cool, but interesting to know how the paint reacts
I'd never seen such a violent reaction before. It stripped the paint right off the model is places like it was still wet
I have to say that I think the second attempt at painting. Actually looks better than the first. So maybe this mishap is the universe saying. Shane I think you can do better.👍
Thanks mate! The model gods work in mysterious ways!
Lacquers all lacquers never mix those weird water based paint . Save the water based for figure painting.
Did you make an build video on the cobra kimg?
Unfortunately not which I now regret not filming. But I can totally recommend this kit!
@@longlance67 thanks i will use your recomendation to consider buying it
Are you sure you didn't mix X21 flat base instead of the x22 ? This white myst looks like x21
At first I thought it might have been the cause too, but in this case I don't have any flat base in the inventory so it shouldn't have been that
Frosting is truly awful. I've had it happen a couple of times but it was more to do with my impatience and putting on too many coats, so something I need to learn from! I thought the effect looked quite cool on the M4, looked like real frost but obviously it wouldn't fit into a dio as it wouldn't appear natural. fantastic job on the repain though, i would have banished them straight to the shelf of doom!
It can happen for a whole host of reasons, and everyone gets burned from time to time. Tis just the nature of the beast. The frosting could have looked cool for heavy frost however it made the paint run so I could not have used it
Shane hang in there buddy
Your work is excellent
I look forward to seeing your work progress
It's going to awesome!!!
Thanks Don! I think we managed to save this one thankfully I am currently preparing to try AKs satin this time. But I'll first spray the underside of the model first to see what happens lol
Vms varnish are the best. Heavy wet coats and it sucks itself to ever detail.
I shall have to give it a try, right now I am trying AK's Real Color varnishes and so far they are behaving themselves
