    I find your install the best I've seen on UA-cam. Having the back face flush to the whole bench is useful when clamping on long pieces of stock. It's not necessary as a long stock can still be clamped to a bench if it is not flush cause you can use a spacer. Making it flush just makes more sense.

    It shows that you take pride in your work and don’t mind putting the time in to get things done just the way you like them. Also, it looks like you were having a blast so who cares how long it took you. Excellent job sir!

    I have a very similar vice. I replaced the metal dog with one made from hardwood with a threaded insert for the tightening screw. So much more forgiving on my plane blades 🙂

    Good job... Well done. I respect your decision on how you mounted your vice.
    There are many ways one can go about doing it; but the reality is that you own what you work on, and do things according to your needs, not everyone else's at there that for the most part, all they want to do is look on others work just to criticize so that they can feel good about themselves.
    For what I can see, it does the job just the way it was created to do.
    Thanks for sharing.

    What a good job installing your vise. we spell it vice in the u.k .Just bought a record 7 ins one, this video has given me some ideas on how to install it to the work bench in the best way.

      +Stephen Baguley thanks! If I would do it again, I would probably make both wooden pieces of the clamping sides the same width and then recess them into the tableside. I tried to combine a leg vise with this "schraubstock", as we say in Austria :D
      thx for the comment!

    I'm (4) years late to the party here, oh well! Nice vise install btw. Not sure why you didn't fit both jaws out to the end of the bench top, causing the insert piece install, however it looks good... This vise shares many similarities to a 10" woodworkers vise given to me by a friend of mine for my newly built workbench. It is about 70 years old by my best estimate & made by Howe & Fory Company of Littlestown, PA., USA... There ain't nothing better than Pennsylvania steel!
    Excellent video presentations & I thank you.

    There’s a few sharp edges on that vice, I’d round them off a bit with a grinder, and cut your bolts flush with the nuts, otherwise I can foresee several skinned knuckles in the future!

    Well, I see we have a lot in common. I examined your work and we are not either of us perfect in our work and many times if not most of the time we need to add a short or odd peice of wood to either correct a mistake or to complete it. You had to do this procedure in this video and checking out your workbench I could see more; of what I call; being a "COBBLER" and not a true Woodworker. Yet! Lol. I enjoyed your video; as we have much in common; but we get the work completed and useful. God Bless.

      Vielen Dank für Deinen Kompliment. Ich habe zwei Schraubstocke teilweise überlegt... der Eclipse und der Wilton... beiden habe dieses "Quick Release" Eigenschaft. Das ist gleichzeitig gut und schlecht. Zeitsparend option aber ich habe gehört das den Mechanismus wird nicht lange halten. Ich mag auch die alte Record (UK herstellt). Leider diesen sind vielleicht nicht mehr lieferbar. Und natürlich jetzt den York Schraubstock. Habe heute die Decke für meinen Arbeitstisch begonnen. Good luck reading my version of German ... • @woodandstuff
      @woodandstuff  8 років тому +2

      +James McIntyre It was the first workbench I ever build so I didn't want to go all out on materials. All in all I spent around 110€ in raw lumber and again as much for the vise and the spindle. Considering I messed up the surface already I think that was a wise choice haha

    If you had just mounted this to the front of the bench the way it was designed to be used, it would have saved you tons of hours and been much more functional.

    • @tonyy5482
      @tonyy5482 7 років тому +4

      How more functional? It's a good question though. I'm thinking he may want to be able secure longer planks against the face of the bench, as done on several traditional benches, such as the Nicholson & Roubo benches (e.g. using a holdfast or clamps). Notice that he used an extra long plank for the outer face and, when the vice is closed, it fits snug again both the inner face vice & the bench top.

      Big, noisy, dusty, safety gear should be worn. Using well tuned hand tools can be a joy - but yes, power tools are often easier, faster &, sometimes, cheaper. But who need the racket! ;)

      wood and stuff You are correct and James is ignorant for making such a comment. I watched quite a few install videos and I believe the way you mounted the vise is the best way to do it. I like that the back side of the vise is flush with the table so you can clamp long pieces firmly up against the table edge. Great job and thank you for sharing.
