Many of us remember those days and still feel the pain of the loss of Karen Carpenter. What a devastating loss. Greatest female voice in popular music that I've ever heard.
Carpenters, join the rabbit hole. # 1 selling american group in the 70's. Tore up the Billboard easy listening charts with 14 #1's in the 70's. Close To You was 4 weeks at #1. Karen Carpenter considered the Voice in the music circles not the right now crowd because they need you to promote her. Also considered best female drummer by many who know music and most drumming magazines. Anorexia took this beauty February 1983 at the age of 32. IMHO most talented female musician ever.
This was my childhood. Karen was on the drums and her brother was on the keyboards. Karen died way too young from anorexia. I do love their music. Thank you. 😢 ❤ Other favorites are We've only just begun, and For all we know. And yes, tons of people played these songs at their weddings.
My sister had the voice of Karen but died early at 38 and never was able to show her talent becuz of our horrible childhood and her lack of self confidence. Well hope shes singing in heaven with Karen. And I just want to see her soon ..now!! This world is too crazy.....
Carpenter‘s cover of the Beatle song ‚Ticket to Ride“ is awesome! Been a fan since 70. Have all their albums. Was like most people and was shocked when she passed. RIP Karen
hurt death moved me more than Elvis. I covered a lot of the Beatles songs. songs. Another one that comes to mind is bang bang Maxwell Silver Hammer. ✌️🤠🏞️🐂
I love the Carpenters i grew up listening to The Carpenters also if you like good lyrics you should listen to Roberta Flacks the first time ever I saw your face
Considered one of the top ten singers, and drummers of the last 100 years. By myself anyway. she actually beat out John Bonham of Led Zep one year as Rolling stone Magazines best rock drummer of the year. If you didn't do Rainy Days and Mondays (live) yet, it is a must listen.
Welcome to the Carpenters rabbit hole. Karen and Richard Carpenter, older brother and sister were the top American act of the 70’s. This is a Burt Bacharach and Hal David composition. The song was written in the early 60’s and there were three attempts at making it a hit. All failed. Then Burt sent the song to Herb Alpert where he gave it to his new signed act, Richard Carpenter. Richard arranged the song you heard and it went to #1 and stayed there for a month. Carpenters first #1. They signed with A&M in 1969 and this song from their second album, of the same name, was the breakout smash that launched them. Richard is the genius behind their “sound” always making the most of Karen’s amazing Contralto voice. As you saw Karen also drummed. She considered herself a drummer who sang. The sad part was in 1983, Karen died of heart complications from the effects of Anorexia Nervosa. It wasn’t well know then and she became the poster-child of the disease. Karen was possibly the greatest voice ever or certainly one of the top. You will be discovering that as you journey. Some recommendations: We’ve Only Just Begun (the actual wedding song of the 70’s) Superstar (you’re gonna recognize this one!) Top of the World A Song For You Rainy Days and Mondays That will get you started, in all cases look for the official video or one with a bazillion views, you can’t go wrong. Enjoy! I date to this song and album in 1970, I was 14. Joe
My favourite female vocalist ever. Just an absolutely beautiful voice!❤❤ My favourite male vocalist is John Farnham(Australian). Would love you to react to his briliant version of the Beatles classic...HELP, Live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. That's a great place to start for JF 👍 ✌️❤ 🇦🇺🦘
This was a cover song for The Carpenters. Written by Burt Bacharach. With two previous recordings going back to 63. Herb Alpert is likely the one responsible for this cover. Much of the Carpenters works are covered songs rearranged by Richard Carpenter to match their Style. Although this song has a somewhat simple percussion score, Karen's ability on the drums almost equaled her voice. Which could have been the most perfect pitch of all time. Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass were big in the 60s Besides later being co-owner of A&M music studios Herb Alpert music was very influential. If you listen to the song Rise you will recognize the heavy bass part as being part of Queens Another One Bites the Dust.
Great reaction! This song was written by the great composer/ song writer Burt Bacharach ( with Hal David). Bacharach died just a year ago at age 94.😢❤❤❤
@Not An industry Artist That's one take Karen, easily one of the greatest female singers of all time. So, if love that beautiful voice like most people do, you might want to check out these other great songs by the Carpenters, " Ordinary fool " " Bless the beast and the children " " Hurting each other "
I never noticed the resemblance until you just pointed it out. And I love that poignant song Willy Wonka sang in the movie. It was the first time his character showed a little tenderness
If you enjoy this song you need to hear more of the Carpenters! They have alot to choose from! Try the songs Superstar, We've only just Begun, Rainy Days and Mondays and Goodbye to Love. You won't be disappointed! 😊
What you're seeing in this video is the band lip-syncing to the studio recording. For the studio recording, the drums were actually played by popular session drummer Hal Blaine. However, Karen played this song just like the recording 1,000 times in concert... she definitely could drum. Despite what the video shows, all the vocals you hear are Karen and Richard -- Richard is a fantastic vocal arranger, and all that layering is his work. There are many drummers who can sing, and there have been plenty of memorable songs from singing drummers. But Karen Carpenter had the all-time best voice of any drummer. The only one who comes a little close is Don Henley (The Eagles and solo). Henley has an excellent voice... but he's no Karen Carpenter.
Just a little correction here for you. "Willy Wanka and the Chocolate Factory" (Gene Wilder) did come out in 1971, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (Johnny Depp) came out in 2005.
In my early 20's I thought I was too cool for The Carpenters. I was so wrong, and the older I get the more I realize it... with age comes wisdom! I think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory came out in 1971.
We've Only Just Begun by the Carpenters was the wedding song of the 70s & 80s

Rainy days and Mondays.
Btw, another band that was very popular in the early 70s was "Bread".

Buddy Rich was asked in 1974 if he liked any pop drummers. He quickly responded Karen Carpenter.

Willy Wonka and Chocolate Factory released in 1971 with Gene Wilder saw it at 6 years old!
