Great subject. The hardest thing to do is cost something you have put hours of time, knowledge and experience into. Especially if all your potential buyers do not know, understand and even sometimes care what that value is. You have obviously done your homework. I ask buyers what they think its worth, and if what they say is too low to my mind, I explain how its made and ask them what they think the value is now. It works sometimes. P.S I chuckled at the ant that appears on your glasses around time 3:49 onward.
I totally get where you are coming from. Quality does take time and talent and you do get what you pay for. I've looked at your website and your prices are very reasonable. I'll probably order 1 in a couple of weeks.
Oh boy thank you for the heads up on blackthorn shillelagh places that sell blackthorn shillelaghs. Sadly the shillelaghs I bought weren't official, I'm kinda bummed out I got these for family members honoring our irish heritage but sadly the shillelaghs I bought aren't official. 🙄😔
I had a devil of a time focusing on what you were saying, I was terribly distracted by the ant on your glasses. LOL I find Blackthorn walking sticks to be beautiful and would like to purchase one. I'm an amputee and use a cane and would like to know if a blackthorn stick would hold up well as a cane?
Yes the thicker ones are best and With more of a t shaped handle when you are ready to buy message me through my website so I can help you pick the right one
I literally dug up two blackthorn saplings this afternoon as I'm going to use the root balls as handles. It was difficult and I got scratched to hell plus they have to cure for over a year. Hopefully the price justifies the hassle!
Yes by the weight the hawthorn will be lighter. But green hawthorn wood just cut is heavy that’s why they use it and can be hard to tell. The wood grain will be tighter on a blackthorn different bark too is any bark showing
Still trying to trying to find some one to order one of them 4 me.Would u show some very old ones? I would like to see if I can find one like the old one, with a double vine wrap?
I would love to get hold of a blackthorn root to make my own walking stick. I can't afford a finished one. I live on a fixed income. There is no blackthorn available here in Florida, USA.
I frequently make and give away walking sticks and knob kierries(the south african version of sheleilagh) I have never realised that there is money in the game.I use wild olive, and black and white karee all of wich is extremely hard and durable woods.Maybe I should give a shot at making some and then try and market them?🤔🤔🤔
Francis I'm not sure you will see or even reply to this message as this is a 2 y/o video but I was wondering what your thoughts are on someone making and selling Blackthorn under the name Shillelagh if the wood isn't sourced from Ireland. I live in Germany and make Blackthorn walking sticks from time to time but have recently been contacted by a person that has 1/4 hectare of Blackthorn as well as a few other common species of trees used to make walking sticks, canes, shepherd crooks and the likes. He is now in his late 70's and no longer has the hand straight to continue making them and hasn't been for the last 15 years. He also hasn't been able to keep up with the trees for the last 10 years. He doesn't have any children to leave his company to and as I have talked to him a few times while walking my dog and asked if I would be able to cut a few pieces of Blackthorn He said I was more then welcome to take as much as I wanted as long as I don't cut down the whole trees. He also said I could go through his seasoned sticks and take what I wanted as he can no longer make them and has no one to leave his business to. But I guess back to the original question. Would it be OK to call my walking sticks Shillelaghs or should I just call them Blackthorn walking sticks.
Pfft, call em shillelaghs if you want. Marketing makes the business. As to being Irish only? Nope. Hell most of ireland left 200 years ago anyway. The amount of people making em is far bigger than the number of people loving in ireland. Will you only be making shillelagh style sticks? If so name them as such, if not pick a more general name for the business itself and then call the designs more alike what theyre modelled after. And if you can manage it, explore the buyout cost of that land. He may sell it to you cheap based in mutual interest and lack of other desires. Frankly a man who tended to a woodlot to make his art and livlihood from it would likely be inclined to see it continue beyond him, otherwise hed have sold it by now to a developer. No family to leave it to means he wants to find someone for it.
As always honest talk from a man who knows what he is talking about!
Thanks for a bit of truth in a world of bla bla bla.

Interesting video Francis, is there any way of telling after a stick is painted whether it's hawthorn and not blackrhorn?

The blackthorn that I have hanging on the wall came to America in 1850.
DUDE, you have a bug walking around on the bottom of your glasses. I couldn't stop watching it.

Just use some local hardwood
Iron wood is ever where in the 🇺🇸
Oak or choke cherry makes a good one,I make a lot of these to sale

In Wisconsin blackthorn is really invasive. People are always digging them up or they get out of hand. They have seeds that drop and grow fast.
Now, I'm worried that my walking stick I have (not from you) is fake and not Blackthorn.
Many fakes flooded the market in recent years
That ant lol
I was a carpenter for 40 years.” If it was easy, anyone could do it” was a saying that we used. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN.
My dad is a carpenter and it not an easy professional
Is European blackthorn different to Irish blackthorn?
No idea.
No.
Love your videos, but I have to ask... What kind of slaery is your assistant the ant getting? ;) lol
Great little worker he is.

I have a very old blackthorn shillelagh. It's from the late 1800s I believe. I wouldn't sell it.
If I see a stick I want can’t I just get a dollar amount and then pay for it like that?
All payments are taken through the webs keg and all prices and shipping costs are also there.
i make them in Sussex
I know nothing about Euro’s or money exchange! All I understand is American $$$,,,so how do I know how much $$$$ for a Blackthorn Walking stick?
Just use google euro to dollar to see latest exchange rate . The dollar went up this week against the euro. I’m a irish company so it’s euro we use .
so not a boomarang spell check
If you are painting your sticks no one can tell if it’s blackthorn or thawthorn. Never paint them!!
I do both and both sell well
