Hey mate, the mural in front of Karaiskakis is to commemorate the 21 people that died in 1981 during an Olympiakos-Aek match, because of the incompetnece of the Greek police (a bit like a Greek hillsborough disaster). At 4:11. this is a monument that stands there for 21 fans who died in an accident back in 1981 after a derby.After a huge win fans run to leave the stadium so they could celebrate outside but the doors were still closed and sealed by mistake so people crushed and crumbled in panic against each other.Back then there used to be a bigger stadium but it was totally demolished and rebuilt as the arena you see,back in 2004.

I found this video on UA-cam and I’m frankly excited. It’s always great when I see my team’s stadium being shown by football fans from abroad and as a Greek living in southwest England I feel even prouder. Tonight’s match is a historic game for both sides. It is your first European semi final after 1982 and the first in our history. Let the better or the luckier qualify and I hope we watch some quality football. Enjoy your stay in my country mate and I believe you have some nice food there too. 😂

Things to remember though.....
We'd probably be more confident of it was a 2 nil deficit rather than 4-2. It's still 2 goals. Plus We've shown we can score against them and we know we can defend better.
We've also shown a level we can get to when we beat City. At that level they stand no chance. It's just whether or not we can get to that level given the tiredness.

Love your positivity Luke, and your enthusiasm, but unfortunately i cant see villa keeping a clean sheet, it's already a difficult task to turn this around thanks to those 2 second half goals that came against the run of play last leg and the missed pen but conceding will make it probably just too big an ask away from home in a hostile stadium, yes I agree we've totally ran riot at times this season, but those games were with well rested and fully (almost) available squad, its a shame but we've reached our biggest challenge of the season when were at our weakest . Frustrating because at our strongest we would have beat Olympiacos, hope I'm wrong though and we pull a rabbit out the hat, but that would probably require a bit of good fortune, (and a decent ref) and we all know good fortune (and getting a decent ref) is a rarity for Villa.

Hello buddy. It's a memorial to those who died 08 02 81. Similar to the Hillsborough tragedy. 21 died trying to get out of the stadium but the gates were closed.

I’ll never understand how players can get intimidated by the kind of atmosphere you get at these stadiums ..it would excite me and drive me on to perform in the game..I’d play up to it and encourage them to get even louder..kind of the way you can imagine Emi Martinez to act in such a situation..I’ve been to games in Turkey and Italy etc etc like the Rome derby and I’ve stood there and thought to myself my god I love this I’d love to be a player out there playing in this..I’d love it personally
I totally relate with your comment! One of my dreams as a kid was to play for Olympiacos and score an away goal against Panathinaikos! My celebration would be to go in front of their ultras and show my team’s emblem while they would throw bottles, lighters, coffee cups or whatever else. About 20 years ago Olympiacos was playing against PAOK in Thessaloniki and their fans were throwing similar items in every Olympiacos corner kick. The result was 2-3 for us and our MVP said at the media post-match “I encourage them next season to throw more rocks and we will score more goals!”
Unfortunately modern football players are not of this mentality.

If i remember well, the memorial (which is the bars of an old stadium gate) also stands at the exact same position that it was when the horrible incident happened... This is the new stadium you are seeing now.. the accident happened at the old one, so when the renovated the stadium and built the new one, they kept the gate at the same position Gate 7 was before, because thats what is allegedely the reason all these people died.. because the gates werent open for the crowd to leave the stadium and they suffocated themselves due to more and more crowd pushing from behind without knowing the could not get out.. if anybody knows something more about the position of the memorial please correct me
The one you asked what is written on the ground. Is not murial but memorial for 21 people killed at Gate 7 in 1981 . It was a championship game between Olympiacos vs AEK

Thought it'd be a bigger stadium. We have to cut out the noise and focus on the job in hand. We have goals in us especially away from home.
The reason it looks "naked" is because it was included in the plans for the 2004 Olympics in a rush after other planned stadiums could not go through and it had to be built fast to be ready for the Olympics. It was built in 14 months and was used in the Olympics.
The second reason it looks naked and simplistic is because it is built in an area in which the ground was sand and small rocks and as such not very stable during earthquakes and Greece is on a major earthquake zone. Thats the main reason for its design with a large single tier stand instead of two-tier stands. It could be built larger and more traditionally looking but it would multiply the cost to the extreme and more importantly it would not be ready for the Olympics in time.
It is of interest to know that it is the ONLY modern football ground in Greece built with private money paid by the club which uses it, yet it is NOT owned by the club but by the Greek Olympic commitee and the club pays rent for its use.
The newly built aek stadium which hosts the final was built by the state with taxpayer money as will the planed panathinaikos stadium.
The monument you saw with the names listed is part of the original gate in which 21 fans died in one of Europes worst football tragedies. It still stands untouched in its original position.

Hey mate , welcome to Greece - Piraeus ( not Athens ! ) The memorial you saw was the old style tourniquet gate of Gate 7 (Olympiacos Ultras). it is kept there as a memory to 21 victims who lost their lives on 8/2/81 on a rival derby between Olympiakos and AEK Athens. Olympiacos beat them 6-0 and a lot of people rushed out aprox at 85th min of the game to celebrate but police forgot the tourniquets locked that day so 21 people squeezed to death while other 55 got injured. On the marble tablet below you can see the names and the age of the victims ( children among them too :( ) I wish you from the bottom of my heart to enjoy the atmosphere of the stadium, enjoy the match ( i think you will have a decent view of the pitch except if a protective net is in front of you that will be annoying ) and i hope you go back home with a defeat :P Try to get a souvenir from the Red Store or from a local merchant by the stadium, be aware of scam prices like hot dogs or souvlaki should be aprox 5-6 euros and scarfs about 10euros from that merchants. Also keep an eye for 'retarded' fans, some may even take pictures with you and have fun but there is a minority who may try to hit you or rob you. Waiting for a second video with reactions and opinions about Stadium from inside etc.
Felix Zwayer the ref who played a part in the €2million match fixing scandal in Germany and served a 6 month ban will be the ref for the second leg...villa going to need to pay alot of money if the want to progress to the final.

Wouldn't say the ref was crap, having seen my team be officiated by way worse refs, for example vs wolves in 2020, this guy got us out of europe in the 2nd leg in a tie we were better and should have won, could have been worse. Its a big mission tomorrow and i have faith we can do this where 4-2 down but we have been here before and made comebacks we beat 2 of the best teams in England and Europe already (man city and arsenal got the double ) in the same week we.
