It shouldn't be the homeowners job to clear a PUBLIC sidewalk the City should be out there maintaining instead of lining their officials pockets with tax payer money. Wherever you are that is shitty policy they have forcing the work on someone just because they live next to it.
That’s exactly how it should be handled everywhere. Some of these people truly could have kept up with their responsibilities. I know there are some who physically or financially can’t, but those that can should be held accountable. Overgrown sidewalks really can be dangerous for people trying to navigate them.
Something our housekeeping dept. taught me at work was put a bunch of new trash bags in the bottom of your bin so when you fill one the new one is handy. Great job SB
I've never voiced my opinion with sidewalks as a handicapped individual... it infuriates me to see them full of debris, and grass. That's the only avenue I can use besides the road with my chair...... HOME OWNWRS, please keep them clean and accessible for me and my fellow chair users
I agree! My suggestion: complain to the city. It is really an impediment to everyone! Even people pushing strollers! Here it is the responsibility of the homeowner/property owner to keep the sidewalks clear. Check it out my friend.👍🏻
@Figment I now live on 30 acres.... away from city life. My home is now ADA compliant, my areas - exterior wise are set up for me, and my chair for accessibility ..... I just dread going into the city for any thing....
I agree with you. About 12 years ago I needed to temporarily use a wheelchair. I looked at the world in a whole new way after realizing the things that handicapped people have to endure daily. That taught me a huge lesson and I am a huge advocate for handicapped people. My apartment building did not have a handicap parking space so after I got done with them, they got one. Anywhere I see without handicap parking or improper accessibility, I make my phone calls and things do change. As for sidewalks, I think the city should be more on top of them being maintained, especially for handicapped people. The city should give them a warning and if they don’t clean up their sidewalk, the city should do it and charge the homeowner.

Such a nice job! I stopped walking on some sidewalks years ago. Too embarrassing for me. I’d trip over lifted slabs or pine straw and fall. This makes things safer for the community and helps out this homeowner who had a beautiful yard.
Spencer, nice work and you have been working like crazy. 5:59, that is such a huge change. The sidewalk reappears, the edges are back, the fenceline clean. Wow. Deterioration can certainly creep-up over time. I think that is something like fifteen years and you can see how much dirt settled, grass crept in, etc. A neat, safe place to walk again is a great accomplishment. First Class work, the edges are back, the visual is back. You cleared the gutter and figured-out how to handle all the accumulated leaves.
Lawn creep is inevitable due to the overfill for compaction. The best way to slow it down is to get you grade down and decrease pitch of slope to hardscape about a mowers width wide. You can cut the sod, remove however many inches of dirt, and then put the sod right back then water it daily until the sod bonds with your new substrate level.
WOW - You do excellent work ! ! ! WOW - Just WOW The neighbors must really notice and appreciate the difference that your labor and expertise has produced.
Truly amazing once again Spencer. You know the grass is bad when you have to use the edger ON the sidewalk just to loosen it up. Inlove how the neighbors came out and thanked you. Great job!

Same here. I like to watch an episode with an edible about an hour before I plan on going to bed. Either watch Spencer or video of rebuilding old tools.
Wrong. In most if not all cities and towns the home owner is responsible for keeping the sidewalks directly in front of and around the property. This includes snow removal and over growing lawns. Cities and townships are only responsible for repairs if the cement cracks or erodes
Taj is right. Here I. Wisconsin the homeowner is responsible to keep the sidewalk clear, clean and shoveled and salted in the winter or the city can fine you.
Same in Australia it’s the home owners responsibility but it’s frustrating when the town doesn’t maintain areas adjacent to their own assets like sporting fields, bridges and parks
You truly are a inspiration. Most young people don't understand why a person enjoys hard work. I'm 67 no not in great health but I still work because that's what caring people do.

Even though this is Texas and blowing dust/dirt - this sidewalk didn't grow a 3 inch grass layer (let alone all of the tree leafs) on it overnight. This is years and years of nothing being done ... much like the rest of the other vids showing cleanups and sprucings of former home owners that once took great pride in their lots, lawns, landscaping, driveway, sidewalks, etc.
@@KarolynHerreraBookEditor yes it’s city property but the nature strip is the responsibility of the homeowner to maintain. Plus, homeowners shouldn’t allow their plantings to overrun the city’s property.
@@KarolynHerreraBookEditor ps - you can tell that the homeowner knows this because the nature strip wasn’t overgrown. They just didn’t care / have energy / didn’t think about cleaning up the sidewalk in all those years.
@@KarolynHerreraBookEditor Too many cities going back and forth homeowner - then city maintenance, then back to homeowner but city controls any cutting or pruning of trees and other city council snafu laws. But homeonwer responsible to city if tree fails or hits someone. Total BS.
It's amazing that "the city" (the council) doesn't look after the sidewalks (footpaths). They grind down steps where the concrete has moved to ensure no-one trips and its safe over here in Australia. From the road in to the property boundary is "council property" and is the responsibility of council to maintain. Having said that, most people do mow this area & consider it something they should mow. It does mean you can't plant trees or gardens in that area.
That's what I was thinking, here in Canada this work would be done by the "town workers" and would never get to this stage of being so overgrown. Same goes for the first 6' of any property from the road; its the homeowners responsibility to mow and shovel snow, but they don't own the first 6' of land, this is so they can always build sidewalks etc if they need to. Interesting stuff
In most places in the US, the responsibility (and liability) for the sidewalk lies with the facing property owner. It’s dumb, and means most sidewalks are terribly in maintained.
You should see the condition of the sidewalks and roads where I live. We joke that it’s a season. Pothole season. So many tires lost 😞 so many rims effd
Agreed. Our local municipal government takes responsibility for sidewalk maintenance. Homeowners are only responsible for snow removal in winter (with hefty fines if you don't clear it within the first few hours of a snowfall - which would be impossible with sidewalks such as the one shown here.) Otherwise sidewalk maintenance is paid for through property taxes. I've watched several SB Mowing sidewalk clearing videos, and am always shocked with how unkempt they are allowed to become in the State(s) where SB shoots his videos. That would definitely violate Property Standards bi-laws up here. I have to believe it is a result of an aversion to paying taxes because cities elsewhere in the world are apparently better funded to maintain their public spaces.
@@pow_dunx true. Every city I know of it’s the homeowners responsibility for maintaining the looks. It’s also the homeowners responsibility to call to get it fixed should it be broken up. Most people do not realize they are paying extra taxes for the sidewalks it’s comes under property improvement and many times the city has to post this if they are going to build sidewalks in a residential area because it increases taxes

Outstanding job! It seems like the cities would be financially better off to clean and maintain sidewalks. This kind of overgrowth can damage concrete over time, especially in areas where there is freezing and thawing. Cheaper to maintain than repair and replace.
Love your videos. I just want to say thankyou. You brought back a memory that I had buried away along time ago. And yes here goes another one of those stories. When I was around 10yrs old. It was a hot summer day, and I wanted to go swimming at my Dad's boss's pool. My Dad was edging our side walks. Being a brat , I kept asking. We didn't get to go. I was so mad at my Dad. But now that I look back at that time. Dad kept saying that as soon as I get done , we'll go. Instead of telling me No , I still had that hope , that we would go. On March 10th 2016 , my Dad took his life. I was a Daddys girl. It's been hard to forgive my Dad for that , and you gave me a reason to remember something nice that my Dad did , for not coming straight out and saying No to going swimming. 💔
Nice job Spencer, love the way it looks now after a good cleaning up, and to think of the appeal that is hidden because someone is a bit lazy about doing a little bit extra when mowing the yard
It must be so satisfying to uncover a hidden sidewalk or patio, talk about instant gratification. You are doing the entire community a big favor especially when you make the sidewalks accessible to everyone. Looked really nice, Spencer. Did a great job! Much improvement in overall appearance of the neighborhood, and now all the corners "match", in upkeep. Well done!

I am always surprised by local town regulations that these people do not have to maintain their sidewalks. I feel like in a lot of places you would rack up fines for this or be forced to pay your town to have it cleared. Unmaintained sidewalks can lead to different types of accidents.
I’m exhausted just watching you do all this work ✅ I hope the family keeps up with the “Great” renewal of their sidewalk ✅ I’m sure everyone is jumping for joy over the cleared sidewalk and especially the handicap clearance and no more having to walk in the street 💯💜🌟💜💯
I had the same thought. I bet this sidewalk will look almost as it was. I'm not sure if it is the responsibility of the owner, but rather the city or town to make sure their sidewalks are free of debris for walkers. Especially those that have reduced mobility.
That is so crazy! Where I live in SE Coastal Virginia, we don’t really have this problem because most people have fescue lawns. Unless you have weeds and some creeping crab grass, no one here has St. Augustine or other creepers. So it would be virtually impossible for this to happen. I find it totally fascinating.
I’ve lived in that area, and there are parts of Norfolk,Suffolk and Virginia Beach(as well as Petersburg) where, if it’s neglected long enough, this can happen also.this reminds me of Asbury Park NJ, where I’ve also lived.
@@cathiwim I’ve not seen it but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible. Perhaps I’m in the wrong area. For wild crab grass to get that out of control your yard has to have been neglected for a decade or two.

@@JenJen0582 that’s the point of a service though. Paying someone to do something for you. Like going to restaurant. 🤦♂️
Great work, Spencer!👍🏻💚💚💚
Homeowners can’t get away with that here, they are responsible for the sidewalks and parking strip. If they don’t keep it clear, the job is bid out, they don’t pay, the property is liened.🤷🏻♀️You did that community and homeowner a great service.💚💚
It shouldn't be the homeowners job to clear a PUBLIC sidewalk the City should be out there maintaining instead of lining their officials pockets with tax payer money. Wherever you are that is shitty policy they have forcing the work on someone just because they live next to it.
@@Mr.Sequiro yep, you’re right about that.
That’s exactly how it should be handled everywhere. Some of these people truly could have kept up with their responsibilities. I know there are some who physically or financially can’t, but those that can should be held accountable. Overgrown sidewalks really can be dangerous for people trying to navigate them.
@@Mr.Sequiroactually a really great point I hadn’t thought of.
Something our housekeeping dept. taught me at work was put a bunch of new trash bags in the bottom of your bin so when you fill one the new one is handy. Great job SB
Good tip! Thank you for watching!
I wish more people would take care of them for this exact reason!
@@danajhasalvegas5819 you are living my dream life. I was raised in the city but I felt like I was a country girl at heart. Enjoy your beautiful property!
15 years?... You took 6 hours to do this... How could this home owner, not find a few minutes each week over all that time, to properly take care of this sidewalk? Shameful. Some communities can even fine you for restricting access to public sidewalks... Great Job! Thank You.
100%. That homeowner had enough time to keep his own lawn mostly clean, but used the sidewalk as a straight dumping ground

What a lame empty excuse.
No, THEY CARE about their neighborhood and how their actions impact others.

I'd even go so far that they liked the look of the neighborhood when they moved in, then they lazily trash the place for everyone else.

@@sheiladawg1664 i said nothing about letting the city take care of it. I asked how did u know the homowner doesnt give a fuck about anyone but themselves from watching a 30 min vid.
Such a nice job! I stopped walking on some sidewalks years ago. Too embarrassing for me. I’d trip over lifted slabs or pine straw and fall. This makes things safer for the community and helps out this homeowner who had a beautiful yard.
Thank you for watching!
Thank you so much Robert! I appreciate the comment.
@@marklar7551 best way to maintain it this to clean up yourself. The owners probably didn’t notice the difference.
@@jonroth7342 actually not having it creep is the best way.

I recently found your channels, and I love them. My favorite things to watch are yard cleanups and power washing steps, walkways, patios, and driveways.
Absolute legends doing this work!!
Aww thank you!
I subscribed because your channel is therapy for me. Watching and listening to the sounds calms my anxieties. It's wonderful that you don't play any music. Even your voice when you talk is soothing. Also the fact that your videos have some length to them gives me time to bring myself into a calmed state, thank you so much, you help people with their yards and walkways, you also help so many others virtually.
Same here. I like to watch an episode with an edible about an hour before I plan on going to bed. Either watch Spencer or video of rebuilding old tools.
What an amazing job, you did what the city is supposed to do, to keep the sidewalk clean so people don’t have to walk on the streets. 👏👏👏
You are so right!!!
I wish the city would do it here haha
I wish more people cared about their neighbors and neighborhood. It's refreshing to see others care for one another. Great job.
You are a dedicated man of great integrity! God bless you and your family! 🙂🙏🕊️
You truly are a inspiration. Most young people don't understand why a person enjoys hard work. I'm 67 no not in great health but I still work because that's what caring people do.

Such compacted and tough ground to work with. You are such a hard worker! One sidewalk/yard/driveway at a time and all amazing! 💚
It was super hard!!! One at a time for sure
I was happy to see that not the entire sidewalk had to be dug up. I bet that was a relief for you to see as well! Great work. One home at a time, you are transforming this world and are an inspiration to us all!
Thanks Spencer, your videos have motivated me to clean my own overgrown garden. I have no mobility issues, just a perfect storm of laziness and procrastination so thank you.

Wow, six hours! That would have taken me four days. That is beyond spectacular!
Total BS.
That sidewalk is looking sweet…great job Spencer so satisfying to watch!!

Spencer don't overdo it, you have those joints that have to get you through life! Good job
Outstanding job! It seems like the cities would be financially better off to clean and maintain sidewalks. This kind of overgrowth can damage concrete over time, especially in areas where there is freezing and thawing. Cheaper to maintain than repair and replace.
Absolutely agree! But I doubt they would even consider replacing it
Dude you are so awesome, helping lots of people out. You are everything America stands for.

Not just the walk itself but how many times to ya get smacked in the face by a low hanging branch or overgrown shrub. It is so much more enjoyable and safe to walk after you work your magic.

The city/town/community should be taking care of its sidewalks like this. Great job SB!!
It's a bit irritating to see that the yard is reasonably well maintained yet they let the sidewalk get this bad. Where I live the homeowner is responsible for the upkeep. Thank you for helping the entire neighborhood with your hard work and dedication.
Hopefully now that it is cleaned up, it will be a lot more manageable for the homeowner
I’ve watched a handful of other guys that do free lawn work etc, but by far, you are the best. Your quality of work is so much higher than others and it really shows. Keep up the fantastic work! X
Question: do you ever go back to see if the yards you cleaned up are being maintained after you left?
I had the same thought. I bet this sidewalk will look almost as it was. I'm not sure if it is the responsibility of the owner, but rather the city or town to make sure their sidewalks are free of debris for walkers. Especially those that have reduced mobility.
Love to see folks like you helping your community.

We have a lot of fescue around here! But these older parts of town get the crab grass and bermuda and it's pretty much a weed haha

Now that this wonderful human has done his best to clean the streets, it is up to the owners of the sidewalks AND the community to keep it that way.
If people want to have a mess in their homes that is fine, but at least invest in keeping the sidewalks in a good state for the sake of the community.
